I completely agree the penalty box mechanic needs to go or at the very least be changed so that there is a timer on and people can get back in the fight after a certain amount of time or after a phase of the fight completes.
As for Mordremoth being invulnerable after the rift have you tried breaking his bar? It’s been a while since I did the fight but I believe he is only invulnerable until you break his bar. After you break it you can dps him down for a short period. Then you use the rift again, break his bar again and dps, rinse and repeat until dead.
Now if you are trying to solo this it could be rough having enough cc’s to fully break his bar but I have seen it done when I was up in the penalty box and watched a friend do it.
I agree on the penalty box: it’s horrible and needs to be gone, or at least timed. It’s worse than the Thaumanova fractal; at least there you can get rezzed (not many people do it, but at least it’s an option).
Died because an updraft was broken and wouldn’t launch me in the air. Had to afk for 8+ minutes while my friend soloed the rest of the fight. Thanks Anet.

Yes, tied everything…his bar was basically grayed out and not able to be broken…it was just bugged out.
They have your money for HOT, so working on the next expansion is far more important than fixing stuff like this -

Solo, I just wish everything didn’t reset because I got hit by a single stray rock…
The penalty box is dumb, and there’s still plenty of other dumb stuff that happens (those whirlwind barriers will drag you out of the sky if they persist into a gliding phase, the blighted enemies start attacking you again if you can’t activate the rift in time because, say, one of those bullet hell orbs is sitting right ON IT interrupting your channel, etc).
I just tried to solo hearts and minds as a mesmer and I got to the last phase before dying. I don’t have lean techniques yet and didn’t manage to get out of the way of a rock near the end of the last flying phase. It knocked me down and put me in the downed state right beside where Mordremoth started attacking after the flying phase ended.
While this isn’t necessarily broken, I would like it changed so that your allies still come to revive you in this last phase of the fight. There were 2 times earlier in the fight where I went down and they came to revive me right away. But in this last phase where I was right in front of Mordremoth they never came to revive me, and because of his attacks and summons I wasn’t able to heal myself. I don’t like it being inconsistent where your allies will help you get to this final phase but then not help you out in the final phase if you need it.
Other than that though this instance went a lot better than it did before it was fixed in the patch.

I attempted this mission solo as a Ranger at least 7 times so far, and no attempts were successful. First time I fell off and died. Second time, a glitch in the updraft mechanics had be falling off the edge, and the other subsequent times I was just overwhelmed.
This level is mind numbingly frustrating, especially since everything just resets when you die.
Would it be easier to jump in a group and kill Mordremoth that way?
Nope.
It scales up with a group and each boss becomes more impossible to kill.
And if the story starter dies, you have to reset which makes it even more frustrating.
I successfully solo’ed it the other day. Managed to walk into an updraft, it worked and my brain managed to get over the “omg it worked” freeze to press glide and I actually did. Then I got hit by a rock whilst the ground was still electric but it must have been right at the end of this part as it didn’t kill me fully and I managed to get up and heal. My brain still hurts thinking about doing this mission.

Its possible to solo it, its just not designed to be an easy fight. After all you are taking down an elder dragon pretty much singlehandedly. Conditions are your friends. Especially for blighted Eir and blighted Canach load them up with conditions while kiteing around them avoiding their attacks. They will fall over pretty quickly. For mordremoth himself same thing for the first few phases, just keep conditions stacked up on him and avoid his attacks. When he summons Rytlock, Marjory, Caithe (if you didn’t pick her as one of the 2 NPCs to go with you) and the order person just do the same thing to them. Load them up with conditions and focus on evading all the attacks. They will die soon enough. The hardest part I’ve found so far is avoiding the rocks he throws at you while you are in the air, but I just have poor control while gliding

For me this instance is best done solo. I consider myself a pretty terrible player, clicking some skills and being fairly oblivious to mechanics and what exactly is going on in fights, but I have managed to complete this on every single class at least once and a few times on duplicate classes. Only one time have I done it with a buddy. It was on my mesmer and he was playing herald. It didn’t seem any easier than solo and I did it later solo with another (condi) mesmer.
I have not yet gotten all the achievements for it though, since in all the times (12+) doing it I managed to be hit at least once by a flying rock. So no flights of fancy yet. I tried choosing Caithe a couple of times and also wasn’t able to beat the blighted pale tree so I haven’t gotten dream warrior yet either and did all of them picking Canach and Braham. I’m sure there is some mechanic related to the blighted pale tree that I am not doing correctly. I came closest to killing her with a zerk ele, so I am guessing lots of aoe damage to kill her summons may be the key? I have never even tried migraine. Hardly anybody seems to be doing it now and I always seemed to have something else going on or wasn’t online when guildies have done it. I will do it sometime.
Biggest issue for most folks seems to be the updrafts. I have never glitched when just running through them without jumping or hitting the interact key, but others seem to have had issues. Maybe lag or bugs are involved? The other biggest issue is patience. Mordy (and pretty much the enemies he summons as well) hits like a creampuff. If you circle strafe him in melee, he won’t knock you down and will eventually die while you won’t. More damage is obviously better, especially since he hits so soft and defense is not really needed. Reflects can help with the weird missile attack he sometimes does but I haven’t noticed them to be necessary. Just stay moving always. But the most important need for patience is when/if you do die from the rocks or something. Just try it again. Although it seems like forever, the whole fight against him is probably only ten minutes or so. If you die and have to restart, it really isn’t as long as it seems to start over. Aside from lag and possible bugs, I believe practically every player can solo this on any class. It is annoying but doable.

While I appreciate people evaluating the fight and the mechanics, this thread doesn’t need to devolve into “Is it soloable?” debate. That’s not the issue.
The broken mechanics are. Anet, fix this boss fight so that those that solo it and those that don’t can actually enjoy your content.
There are zero reasons why this fight should still be broken. Design it so that things have failsafes. Just do something.

It doesn’t need a nerf. While the fight can be very frustrating its difficulty is perfect as it is right now. Considering that people have soloed migraine with multiple classes there is no reason to call for a nerf to the regular instance

Pretty sure you misread my post to read that I think it should be ANet’s priority to make it fun…I said to make it work. From the number of bug reports its clear that it doesn’t and still has bugs. Critical story breaking bugs. By enjoy, I mean actually finish it…which I can’t due to the critical game breaking bugs encountered.

However the bugs people were reporting initially do seem to have cleared up a bit. Or maybe I was just luckier the last time I did it compared to all the other times I’ve tried it. I no longer see tons of posts claiming this is broken.
Looking through this post there are complaints about the penalty box. That isn’t broken, it’s stupid and horrible but not broken. I see two people saying the updraft didn’t work but one had a friend who managed to complete the mission. Because updrafts work differently in this mission compared to the entire rest of the game (god knows who signed off on that decision) it may be player error not broken updrafts.
So unless I’m mistaken there’s only you with an issue in this thread.

Honestly, updrafts are doable. The main problem here is when you are unlucky enough for the rift to not bring down Mordremoth’s blue hit bar in the last stretch. The rift doesn’t stay there for you to try again. Instead it disappears and Mordremoth stays invulnerable to your attacks, forcing you to kill yourself and start from the top of his fight.
I don’t mind difficult fights and I appreciate that his is so challenging, but to be halted by an action that isn’t doing its job is annoying as all hell. This is especially true because you have to rinse and repeat that for the whole end, and one flub on that is intolerable.

You don’t necessarily have to start over. You can also deplete his break bar manually. I had to do this during my extreme mode achievement. Depending on your class the break bar is soloable (I had the bad luck that everyone else dropped out during the last glider phase).
Cripple, chill, blind and any kind of soft cc are good to prevent his break bar from recovering while you’re waiting for your hard cc to recharge.

I earlier today finished my third solo run through this episode.
For, it’s not too challenging as designed. I like the story. I like the fight mechanics. I like the required mobility. For my money, a nerf is not really needed.
All of that said, it does seem kinda buggy or quirky still. I was able to get airborne at all the right times. Once airborne, though, I found it hard to see the updrafts (perhaps my aging eyes is part of the problem here). Also, a couple of times I ended up prematurely back on the ground and couldn’t get airborne again using the plumes. In these cases, I died, obviously (three times on this last run through…four or five each on my previous runs). Perhaps there’s a setting I can adjust that will make the updrafts easier to see. Not sure what the problem was trying to get airborne again. Just seemed quirky.
My biggest problem was on the Caithe segment, right after the first airborne section. I fought her down, no problem. When Braham tells me that the rift is ready, I go over and start to channel and Caithe interrupts me…again…and again…and again. Fifteen minutes I played with this, trying everything I could think of. You can’t snare or stun her. My pet wouldn’t hold aggro on her. Traps didn’t work…nothing. I finally tried suicide to re-set…and that didn’t work. I through myself over the side and ended up in a downed state on the platform and my handy companions revived me…lucky me. Finally…I pulled out all the stops at once…Hounds of Balthazar, pet special attack, longbow stealth shot, traps….the kitchen sink…everything. And it worked. To no avail…I died in the next airborne segment.
Funny thing is, on the next attempt, I didn’t have any problem at all with Caithe. The channeling on the rift worked perfectly. This is kind of what I’m talking about. The encounter seems inconsistent. Sometimes the updrafts work…sometimes not. Sometimes have a problem with Caithe…sometimes not. I’m not discounting at all the possibility that it may well be my gaming skills.

Saying that a bug it’s “just you” is irrelevant and actually just wrong information designed to belittle and demean people. This bug is repeatable, reported by an entire party of players and posted here so people can post similar experiences. Yeah, I got to this mission a day or two after the patch that fixed most of the other issues and had to restart it because of this (before I learned that you could break his CC bar though it was pretty tough since my fiancee had died and was in the penalty box thing – please get rid of that).
I enjoyed the final mission but man, that bug was annoying and I hope they fix it soon for my other characters.
The mission itself was actually quite fun, fights weren’t too difficult (most difficult part for me and my fiancee since she died on it most of the time during our attempts was the avoid rocks while gliding part) but weren’t too easy. More fun than many of the fights in LS2/HoT honestly.
But that bug really did sour me a little since I ended up doing all that again (I beat him on my 3rd attempt at that final stage. First attempt. I don’t even know how I died lol. second was the bug where I threw myself off because of it and 3rd I beat him by breaking that bar of his after the bug occured, w00t). – I was worried I was going to DC since I have terrible luck in LS instances that are longer than 20 minutes.

Its a very annoying fight and you have to go through it at least twice to fight all 3 ally fights, it should count the ones you fight the first time you beat it
The good news is that they learned from LS2 and you can get the acheivements by doing it with a second character.

this. I had a pretty good time doing some HoT events and going through the story, but Hearts & Minds pretty much killed any desire I might've had to even advance the personal story on any of my other characters after I finished it on my first one. it's tremendously frustrating to go through the combat with little or no issues, only to have some stupid buggy mechanic like the updrafts killing you when they fail to work. and then having to sit in a penalty box for 15 minutes while your dwindling party struggles to finish the mission. Just skip this chapter. It is a useless exercise in frustration. You end up dying because of bugs in the process. Once you are dead, you are stuck on the sidelines waiting for the next hour or so until your friends die. Then you can go back and try it again. This one sucks in the worst way. I hope the creators of this one get tasked to smoke a kitten in hell for this one.
I have no idea what the supposed problem is, in the last month alone i did this fight 4 to 5 times, some of it solo, some of it with friends and even the one time both of my partners died and i had to finish alone it worked without a problem.

Yes, sometimes it works okay. Sometimes however it doesn’t. For one, instares Garm on Migraine is really annoying.

This is a really weird exchange. Games are played for fun – of course they should be enjoyable.
That said, I haven’t “enjoyed” a single end fight of any of the stories. Some people “enjoy” a painful fight, I am not one of them.
I also think it’s silly for the Player Characters to be single-handedly beating enemies that have plagued entire civilizations.
You’re very lucky if it didn’t bug for you. I’ve only done it once with a very helpful guildie. It bugged out, we didn’t have to restart because she knew how to glitch around the bug. From what I hear, that is the experience of over half the players. As a disabled player, the visual effects confused me and set off my migraines. It was hard to tell what was going on and with the pressure of “die here and start all over” hanging over my head, I didn’t have the luxury of spending any time to try to learn the mechanics. When you die on a final boss and then it might be 15-20 minutes before you get back to it IF you get back to it… well there’s a reason most video games give you a save point right before the last encounter.
The Mordremoth fight is poorly implemented and designed compared to Dragon’s Stand which feels much more like the epic battle we should have gotten instead. Why hasn’t it been fixed? It’s a big old cheat to buy HoT and then find out the last chapter is so awful that you won’t enjoy finishing it. Games are supposed to be fun. I don’t enjoy painful RNG based fights either and I have 100+ video games under my belt that I’ve beaten.

’To me HoT represents a paradigm shift in difficulty and dynamic event structure. You can’t just waltz through the zones and be guaranteed success, you need to pay attention or you go splat. That to me, is cracking good fun!
