This is nothing short of an insult to every single one of those who have been loyally playing for so long. They’re giving new players the expansion practically for free in comparison!
And it’s not as if they’re offering a full game’s worth of content, either.

Get off your high horse.

Given the amount of free content they have given us since launch, this is nothing. Certainly far less than what we would have paid in total subscription costs since launch

I don’t care about the constant free content, I am a WvW/pvp player I get ignored for 2 years.

I was expecting maybe $40 at the absolute most (and with a character slot to boot), but $50 with no slot…

That’s just steep enough to push me into considering taking a break from the game and coming back when the price drops or there’s a sale or something.

And I feel bad for anyone who recently bought GW2 in preparation for HoT.

I am also very disappointed about this. I think most people are missing the point that people like me are upset about.

If you’re a new comer to Guild Wars 2, then you would have paid $50 for Guild Wars 2, the Core Game and the Expansion.. While veteran players the source of ANets, renewable income are paying $100.

If you already have the Core Game, then I seriously doubt that you would actually obtain a secondary account. It just does not make sense to have the veteran players purchase the Core Game twice, and only have one account. You’re not being fair to those who have been loyal tot he game. Also, you’re not even giving the people an additional character slot for the new profession, unless that want to cough up another $25 and get the deluxe edition (for spend $10 for 800 gems in game or convert in game currency).

It just feels like the seasoned players are being milked for every penny, while any new comers to the game would have paid HALF of what the seasoned players have had to pay. This just.. does… not… make… sense.

There needs to be an option for the people who already have the core game to be able to purchase the expansion on its own.

…can’t people wait at least a day or to for the E3 hype to settle, so that additional details about the expansion only bundle come out?

It’s not like they’re going to make older players miss beta events by only giving out preorder bundles that have core+HoT. That would take at the very least a week, and next patch might highly likely not have a beta event within that time frame.

Edit 1: That makes THREE WEEKS of waiting. THREE KITTENING weeks to wait for HoT-only preorder bundles to come out for players with the base game already.

I think it’s very sweet of them to offer the base game for free, however I’ve never purchased an expansion that came with a new class and no new character slot. I suppose anet could trying to encourage us all to buy a new character slots with the gold we’ve been farming out in the silverwastes. If it’s not, that’s shame. It’s what I’ll be doing as I have zero interest in the digital items the more expensive editions offer.

All of you people expecting this for $20 are just not thinking, at all. It’s pretty funny.

I agree the standard should have a character slot. I also expected it to cost $50 and you should have expected it too.

Given that Anet has sold GW for what, $5? in the past, I seriously hope that they drop the price to $44.99 and let the people cry about it.

Most of the long time players pay minimum $60 when the game came out. Now Anet wants us to pay $50 for the xpac (which includes the base game). Basically making long time players pay $110 for the SAME content as NEW players who pay just $50.

You seem to be a generous fellow. Instead of looking at it as you’re being shafted, maybe look at it as being easier to get new people into the game. New blood is good, yes?

It’s not being sold to new players. How does this escape all the people who are saying this? The products are in the gem store. There’s a little pop-up thing in-game that directs you to it. The only people this is being sold to are already established players.

There is no way to justify making players that already have to game to re-buy the whole game just for the expansion, this makes no since and I’m not paying 50 dollars, or more, for a game I already have. They either need to make a new option that gives players with the game a reason to buy it (Such as offering more character slots, gems, or something that covers the cost of the core game), or drop the price for players with the core game already. Either way I won’t be pre-purchasing until this issue is fixed.

Its not a shady business deal. You aren’t actually buying the core game. The expansion is $50. New players just get the base game for free because its old content which is great. Its not like WoW where a new player would have to buy the the base game, the old expansions, and the new expansion which really put a strain on getting new people to try the game.

Or, it could be that the expansion itself is $50, but in an attempt to attract new players the core game comes ‘free’ to them if they bought the expansion at the same price as the rest of us.

It’s a common marketing and economic tactic that works wonders, not a single quality MMO hasn’t done something like this before.

Do you believe the expansion is worth $50 though? Not to dismiss the work ANet put into it, but from everything we’ve seen it’s a mini expansion, it doesn’t offer nearly as much that every other quality MMO’s expansion does at this price point. The only thing that could justify this price is if the core game was bundled in with it at a 50%~75% discount or if ANet has been really coy and is actually including an entire continent in HoT to surprise us with.

I hope it’s the latter, because if it’s the former I have to really wonder if we’re going to be saddled with an extra account every time an expansion comes out.

Hell, even GW2’s monthly fee is higher.

And guess what it includes!? A completely new race, 3 new classes, new skills for everyone, class-specific Limit Breaks, completely new areas, flying, airships, dungeons and raids!!

What does HoT give us for $10 bucks more? Elite specs which won’t help the professions that much [Necro will still be dead], one new profession with 0 changes to reflect that it exists, and a couple new areas and the masteries.

Out of 20 guild members only 1 is willing to pay that price. It’s not a scientific sample but it’s probably not too unusual either.
For a couple pve maps and elite specializations the price is absurd. If I had that money to spend I could buy another game, not just DLC.

If a 10-20$ HoT ONLY package doesnt come out soon I have a feeling you wont be selling as many copies as you’d like. Hiking the price up in anticipation of that is just shooting yourself in the foot. Better to go high quality, small portion, reasonable price than medium quality, medium portion high price. The latter is how you lose loyalty, but the former is how you gain it.

In all honesty while $50 (over $60 to us Canadians) is quite a lot for just an expansion (WoW’s most recent expansion was $80 for standard here), I still feel that the amount of hours you get out of it makes it more worth it. Some people brag about having 3000+ hours, for a 20-60$ game purchase that’s pretty good.

The part that really leaves a sour taste in my mouth is the lack of an additional character slot in the base version, I’m now forced to either spend additional money to unlock one or buy the deluxe version or to delete one of my existing characters if I want to use the new revenant which is a key feature of the expansion.

It’s not the wording. it’s the fact that new players are being treated better than existing players. if it was a bundle deal, and I could upgrade my main account and use the core game as an alt, I’d be fine, because I’m paying for both and I’m getting both. however, as it is, being an existing player will cost you that second account – so I’m paying for both and I’m getting one.

“Instead of looking at it as you’re being shafted, maybe look at it as being easier to get new people into the game. New blood is good, yes?”

Think about this for a moment. The HoT preorder options are only available in the gem store at this minute. And there was a little popup flag in-game that redirected me to the Gem Store page for HoT. There is no way that this is for new players. It’s for players who already have the game, and are playing it right now.

$20 is a fair price without chara slot, $30 is fair with a chara slot. but even at $20 it should include an extra chara slot.

I assume you’ll still be able to be part of a guild even if you don’t have HoT.

Why make sense, when it’s so much more fun to make nonsense?

I am willing to pay $19.99 for an account upgrade that has the HoT content and includes a character slot. I am not interested in your products if you’re trying to scam me.

My thoughts exactly. Not buying at that pricepoint especially kitten off no character slot. LOL!

How is it a scam? Have you ever bought an expansion for an MMO before? News flash, they’re all $50+.

I beg to differ.

We also don’t pay a subscription fee.

It’s the only reason GW2 is still around.

You guys realize that $20 is roughly the cost of any living story. IE one or partial sections of one kittenty map and maybe 3 missions right?

All of you people expecting this for $20 are just not thinking, at all. It’s pretty funny.

I agree the standard should have a character slot. I also expected it to cost $50 and you should have expected it too.

Given that Anet has sold GW for what, $5? in the past, I seriously hope that they drop the price to $44.99 and let the people cry about it.

The Living Story stuff is pretty low value so that doesn’t justify it.

You know what was good value? The base game. 50 bucks for a full game. That’s a reasonable level of value.

Given that they’ve put a lot of effort into maintaining the game all this time, I think most of us are willing to pay a bit more than the value of the expansion but there are limits and I think Anet has exceeded them massively, especially considering that the base game requires some gemstore upgrades to really shine.
