They are likely hoping it will blow over, and they can get away with it by appeasing everyone with some forced, half-hearted apology. That might work when it’s a unpopular changes in free updates. Some will quit playing, but most will eventually (even if begrudgingly) accept the changes and go about their way.

But this is something they are asking money for, and have already been lying about for 6 months in a shady scheme to get more money. People aren’t going to just forget about it and hand over money anyway. You don’t forget about a lie the way an unpopular change fades away.

Frankly they have holdouts over the barrel, because by offering the base game for free to new customers they can just develop future playable content for HoT only.

Expect HoT to be required for LS S3. You won’t be able to buy it separately on the gem store either.

That’s one massive crowbar to ‘motivate’ disgruntled players. HoT is a paywall for veteran players.

Well, I am not going to buy HoT standard edition because it includes the BASE GAME and I do NOT need another account. Why? ArenaNet has made everything account wide, therefore, a second account is pointless to its core. I have plenty of other F2P games to play and all my cash shop in those games are obtained with gold since I’m tight on money and I only spend it on something worthwhile which would be Heart of Thorns WITHOUT the base game.

A simple point people don’t seem to understand is that the core game inclusion isn’t influencing the price in any way… it’s just something they threw in so new players that missed the previous sales aren’t stuck behind a huge paywall. They just got lucky to get the game at a lower price than others(free of charge in this case) the same way people got it for 75% less during the recent sales but nobody raised any pitchforks then even though they should have, according to the logic the complaining follows. The expansion itself costs 50$, you’d be paying that regardless of core game inclusion. Nobody is forcing you to pay extra for something you already have. Think of it as a 100% discount product you don’t have to put in your basket separately.
As for the pricing itself, $40 to $50 is just standard pricing for MMO expansions. And saying there’s not enough content to justify the price isn’t valid because we don’t know how much content there actually is. Which is where the magic of pre-purchasing kicks in… you don’t have to buy it now if you don’t feel you know enough. Pre-purchasing is an optional gesture of faith from the consumers. The game didn’t release yet. Anet isn’t demanding that we pay for the game now and then releasing it in a week or two from now. The game is several months from being ready. In fact, Anet isn’t demanding anything and people are hatemongering for no real reason. The game isn’t going live with just the things that were revealed up until now, and I don’t know why people are acting like it is. There’s still months of reveals ahead of us. Just stop with the pointless, and frankly baseless anger and hatred.

That is what they are telling you and your buying into it. They have people that crunch numbers, that is their job, you can sure as heck bet your butt that they took into account the value of the core game and added it to the price tag. It would be idiotic for them to not do this. It helps them justify the $50 price tag even if they tell you it doesn’t.

Like I have said before, if you buy a meal from McDonalds they may tell you the fries are basically free but in actuality they have taken into consideration the value of each part of that meal, right down to the paper wrap around the straw.

Apparently ignorance IS bliss. Don’t go into the light!

…..now Im craving for some fries >.<

Edit: but going back to Anets continued silence, do they really need to say anything at this point when they have their own army of youtubers running to their rescue? Dance puppets DANCE, muaahahahaha

Those youtubers were already fanboys, and whatever nonsense they’re saying now is just going to rally other fanboys. They’re not going to have any sway over reasonable, intelligent, people that can see this for what it really is.

Anet is going to have to own up to the trainwreck they created, and start taking steps toward fixing it, as well as re-earning the trust of their players.

Can’t say I really blame them though. If I was getting flown to places and given swag just to spew fanboy crap….yea I would be eating wtv kitten Anet puts in my mouth too, I just hope they give me a napkin afterwards

…..hell who am I kidding? I might have to buy that in the gem store I guess :/

So basically Anet and Ncsoft expect me to subsidize a new player’s copy.

$50 + $10 USD = $73.39 CAD on today’s rates.

I paid only $47 for the core game at launch. There’s no way HoT will have as much content to warrant an even higher price tag than the core game.

Throw people a friggin’ bone here, money is not the issue but this leaves a bad taste in the mouth in terms of value.

That’s one massive crowbar to ‘motivate’ disgruntled players. HoT is a paywall for veteran players.

I do expect any new content for some time to be centered around HoT areas, and require that to play. I don’t really have a problem with that, either. It also makes sense from a story standpoint. The current action is all in Maguuma, so that’s where LS3 needs to be.

But none of that really matters to me, and I think a lot of others share this opinion. I’m not buying HoT because of the absolutely deplorable moves they have made this week. Anet is going to have to do a lot to rectify this situation before I even consider opening my wallet for them.

I would hardly consider LS3 a reasonable incentive to purchase HoT, anyway. And certainly not feeling held over a barrel for it. LS2 was a bunch of rushed, buggy filler with a couple good bits of instanced story. It did nothing but prove Anet is not capable of quality content on 2 week cycles, but can make something good if they have a couple months to work on it. I don’t expect much better from LS3, so they can keep it, and I will keep my money until they can prove they deserve it.

The argument that this is a non-subscription game doesn’t hold water in the least. There are plenty of F2P games that sustain themselves and offer full releases of new content at no additional cost. Anet already makes money off of box/digital sales and cleans up with gem sales to boot. Trying to justify what appears to be a rather thin expansion costing $50 by claiming the woes of being B2P is an empty argument.

As it stands this expansion looks utterly anemic. Anet has done a horrible, horrible job with the reveal. Heck EAWare just revealed it’s first teases of what’s coming with the next SWTOR content releases, all of which will be at no additional charge for subscribers, and on top of that they’ve given a completely firm date as to when early and standard access will begin. To see EA handling its future content better than Anet is just sad. There has been backlash like this to some extent elsewhere, but Anet’s further hands-off nature in correcting the issues and addressing the community makes it even worse.

They could announce that the expansion will be fifteen times larger than the original game at this point and I wouldn’t buy it. Anet has gotten worse and worse and worse at dealing with its community. Snarky comments from staff and flippant remarks on Facebook followed by an incident like this don’t inspire confidence. My money is going elsewhere.

It amazes me how most of you feel entitled to judge the value of the expansion in general.

ArenaNet is asking us to judge the value of the expansion when they ask us to pay for it in full, without even knowing a release date.

They expect us to pay basically the same we paid for the full game at release. Does HoT have as much content as the core GW2?

Nope.

And that’s it. There isn’t any way around it. The price simply isn’t fair, and ArenaNet knows it.

Bingo.

To clarify: $50 is the price of the expansion. We included the core game as a free bonus to make it easier for new players to get into it.

I think that this is great for new players! However I think this is inconsiderate to everyone else. Especially if what we expect is true, and that is that HoT, being an expansion, will be smaller content wise than the original game at launch. Meaning that we are paying more for an expansion of lesser content than we would pay for the original of greater content now.

Even if that’s not true, I think it would have been a far better idea to offer a Hot upgrade to existing accounts for say.. $35 bucks for the standard. Then offer the expansion with the core game bundle for $50 or $60 for the standard edition.

I think that sounds pretty fair to all parties involved.

Problem is that:
1- A new player gets the expansion + the full game + many character slots for 50$
2- a veteran player gets the expansion for 50$, without the full game and without the character slots

It’s just completely unfair to make a new account a better deal than upgrading an existing account. It makes no sense at all.

They should have proposed:

Full game 30$
Expansion: 30$ (with 2 new character slots)
Full game + Expansion 50$ (10$ rebate for new players)

Scrap the ultimate and deluxe version, put that stuff on the gem store.

That’s the point: $50 and up pre-order price tag with horrid transparency about what it’s delivering. The value just isn’t there at this point, and it’s further upset players because that base price doesn’t include an additional character slot, meaning there’s no choice but to pay more or to start a new account in order to experience it.

There’s nothing good about the way this has been handled so far.

I don’t know why people seem to think finally getting around to adding a feature that existed in the original game (ie Guild Halls) is such a big thing- they should have been in at the start.

Skill updates, etc should have been happening every month, instead they hold them all back.

Dumbing down the trait trees and restricting build choice and stat selection is being sold as an ‘expansion’.

Grinding for mastery points, 3-4 new maps which we know nothing about, a new race, the inevitable hugely buggy wvw map (first new map since launch) and one new spvp map and the usual spam 1 zerg fest mechanics.

Sounds well worth the money…..

I’ll be playing gw1 for the foreseeable future- you know, the game with guild halls, templates for builds, real teams, hard missions and no face palm one shot cheese mechanics.

I’m sorry but they’re not adding a feature like Guild Halls in the original Guild Wars 1. If it was just an instanced room with some merchants that you can squirmish in, you might be right. But it’s not.

They’re doing something very different here. Giving you an entire zone. Creating a fight for that zone. ALlowing you to build structures in that zone. Allowing you to decorate it and move stuff around in it and rotate it. Allowing you to duel and squirmish. What they’re doing here isn’t a Guild Hall like you have in Guild Wars 1 and probably shouldn’t be mentioned in the same breath.

Nobody does know. That’s kind of the biggest issue. There’s no transparency about what the $50-$100 is buying. Based on what has been shown thus far, I can judge that what we’ve seen is not worth the cost to me. And the lack of a release date is really off-putting.

The OP compared what we know now with what WoW players know in advance about their expansions. As a veteran WoW player, I call shenanigans. It is absolutely incorrect to suggest that we know even a fraction of what WoW players would know only months before the anticipated release date.

They need to release a list of all the content in the expansion. Honestly, I think the new content looks great, but in proportion to the full game 50$ seems a lot. I still didn’t hesitate to pre-order it, there is no way I am skipping this new content.

It’s probably mentioned by now in this 73-page, 3300+ post-thread, but the reason why I’m not prepurchasing until you (Anet) listen up and show your loyal veterans a little love, is:

For 50 USD new players can play the full HoT expansion.
By now, (most) veterans will have used up all their 5 char slots, and for 50 USD they CANNOT play the full HoT expansion with one of its core, new features; the Revenant. Somehow we’re forced to either buy an additional character slot for 10 USD – or be expected to grind out the gold to buy one in the gem store for gold -> gems equivalent of 10 USD. New players aren’t forced to do this.

  • I have NO issues with the price tag of 50 USD for HoT.
  • I believe the content looks great, the developer teams have done an excellent job and I look forward to playing the expansion.
  • I think it is very great that new players get the core game for free with the expansion; it removes barriers for getting into the game.
  • The whole veteran vs. new player issue is a non-issue; people are saying veterans already got their bonus by being able to play the game for 3 years. My retort is that there is NOTHING that puts me as a 3-year veteran in a different spot than a new player, this line of argument holds nothing. If I was privileged somehow and they were barred from joining back, then fine I would understand your line of reasoning, but the reason why they’re a new player now is that they have decided NOT to opt in to GW2 for 3 years. I did, and I have sunk loads of time and money into this game. But all of this, is besides the point, and has nothing to do with this whole prepurchase argument and is definitely not grounds for saying veterans don’t deserve any bonus on these prepurchase packages. But I can live with the fact that there aren’t any.
  • But I cannot sit by and see that some players are getting HoT (and all its features) for 50 USD, while some – which happen to be your loyal players over the past 3 years – are expected to pay 60 USD.

The one and only issue I have with HoT’s preorder purchasing right now is the slow trickle of information.

I support the preordering and support current prices (Mine is a purchase based on trust, as I believe ANet will deliver), but I entirely agree with players saying that more information about what we get with HoT is needed , even if you simply speed up reveals or reveal multiple specialisations simultaneously.

I got 2.5k hours out of the original game. paying $50 for an xpac full for features and content is the least I can do. I preordered as soon as I could.

secondly, im HAPPY for all the new players getting the deal. it doesn’t bother me one bit.

Way to bring a ray of sunshine into our dismal pity party. You’re such an upper.

I’d have been happy with something like this.

GW2: Core Game($xx), Digital Deluxe ($xx)
HoT: Standard($xx), Deluxe($xx), Ultimate ($xx)

Limited time offer, HoT now includes Core Game -OR- Core game now includes HoT.
Upgrade to DD edition through gemstore (still available)

Even if now, we have Ultimate @$100, i’d still buy it. so long as i see that i can still buy Core Game option. And the availability of DD is also an option. Any of the character slots (or not) can be figured out inside the HoT packs.

What are people actually saying when they say, “HoT is not worth $50?” They’re saying that they have not yet seen enough to justify that price. They’re comparing HoT to other products that are priced similarly and making a judgment. This is called comparison shopping.

What are people actually saying when they say, “HoT is worth $50?” It’s either, “I’ve seen enough to justify the price.” or “I trust ANet.”

The discrepancy between those who haven’t and those who have seen enough? That comes down to different individuals valuing different things and/or having different standards. It’s subjective and cannot be resolved by rational (or in some cases irrational) discourse.

If it’s, “I trust ANet” … then that’s also a personal decision. I no longer trust them, not because of this issue, but because they no longer seem to want to provide the things about their game that I value. That’s why I’m waiting. If I will not buy based on trust, then HoT is going to have to undergo the comparison shopping test.

The longer ANet stays quiet, the more this wound festers. E3 week is almost over and with how far this outrage is spreading it wouldnt surprise if within the next week gaming journalist get all over this.

ANet seriously, what are you doing? This isnt the Ascended Scandal or the Megaserver Fiasco, this is an entirely different beast with the capability to make or break the company and its reputation..

Bought the original collector’s edition and got way more than my money’s worth out of it. Bought the Ultimate the second Colin said it was available for purchase (on the stream). Little sad that there wasn’t a physical collector’s edition for HoT, but oh well.

I’d intended to do that since the expansion was announced and I have no regrets.

Most likely there will be. Physical collectors editions are most commonly sold at brick and mortar stores, you don’t particularly like stocking items for products that consumers will only be able to play after a as yet unknown amount of time.
That is to say, once a release date is announced they can start putting together physical editions and start sending them to stores.

You’re right. There’s not enough information for most people to make a fair judgement on the expansion. And that information is going to come over the weeks and months ahead.

I’m not sure why people think there is some requirement for a company to offer enough information for everyone when first offering it for sale, that’s my point. Obviously some people feel they do have enough information and those people now have the ability to put down their money. I don’t think that’s a bad thing.

Nor do I think it’s a bad thing to wait and see if the game will be worth preordering or purchasing later down the road.

This expansion is not and will never be worth 50$. Maybe make another one and those 2 together would be worth 50$.

-New region (The Heart of Maguuma)
-Mastery System
-Profession: Revenant
-Elite specializations (rework)
-SPvP (stronghold new mode)
-WWW (Desert Borderlands new map)
-And some useless things…

This is worth 50$? You kidding me? Without new dungeons? New SPvP maps? etc etc…Think i will wait like most of old players for things to change…I will be not buying this…

Big dislike for Anet, I was expecting lower price for amount of content in this expansions. Next time make big expansion with a lot of new content and put price like that…

Btw this thing about Core Game and stuff. If you are buying HoT in game it will only upgrade your account to HoT, you will not get Core Game its only for new players. So paying 50$ for content as small as it is, is even worse thing than paying for Core Game + HoT (Core Game key & HoT key).
