I see a lot of reactions of: “If HoT was $50,- for only the expansion, people wouldn’t complain”.

That’s true!

But here is the big difference: Rather you are a new player or a veteran, you pay $50,- but as a new player you get the core game. As a veteran you already have the core game so u only get the expansion. No substitutes for veteran players. So this is really unfair to the veterans..

Some of the big problems I see here are:

- Not nearly enough information about expansion only features; while I think in general, 50$ for a B2P style MMO expansion seems fair, I’m not at all certain what exactly said 50$ would get me compared to what is being added for free

Well, there really doesn’t seem to be much Anet could about the price; the $50 price tag was set for them weeks before they even announced the Expansion back in January: http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/3adxq0/the_real_reason_for_hots_50_price_tag/

They have a sales revenue goal of $100,000,000 (2 million units at $50 each). One of two things will happen:

1. They will meet or exceed that goal and keep the price at $50 until sales significantly drop off.

2. They will fail to meet that goal and will quickly drop the price in order to increase the number of units sold (in order to mitigate their losses).

They won’t sell 1/4 finished project for 50$ to 1 million ppl, thats a guarantee especially with bad talk about Anet these days,.

$50 for content that will clearly keep many of us entertained for at least a few months, sounds like a bargain to me.

Thats your assumption only. There might be not that much of content. We don’t know the exact list of content.

This is correct, and from what I have seen, read and tested, I am convinced it will be worth the price for me. If you do not, don’t buy it. You say we don’t know the exact list of content, but I disagree. We might not know all the details of all the features yet, but we have been given a lot of info. If the info we have been given is not enough for you yet, then wait before purchasing. But it seems clear, to me at least, that the amount of content HoT will provide will keep most of us entertained for a decent amount of time.

To those that think the expansion should be in line with other previous products. You cannot expect a product on sale now to be priced the same as a similar product from a few years ago. Prices change, resource costs change and things like inflation happen. Maybe in some countries there is no such thing as inflation or increased production costs, but in most big countries all successful businesses have followed the common practice of raising prices to stay in profit and to keep above inflation and increased production costs. And those that don’t often fail after a few years (if they’re lucky enough to last that long), due to their costs being more than their income.

Also, you cannot judge one expansion price to another, based on content quantity alone, because this is largely irrelivant. What is more relevant is the quality of the product. In other words how much entertainment you get out of it and how long it keeps you happy for. You could play a small game that keeps you happy for months, while a big game could get boring after a week. Do you still think the big game should have a higher price?

I am not saying EotN was a poor game in terms of quality. It did have some good quality content in it. But from what I saw in EotN, compared to what I have seen so far in HoT, I think HoT will offer a lot more quality content, and therefore I feel it is worth the higher price tag. But maybe that’s just me.

Simplicity is complex.

Good feedback is key to getting the developers to listen to you.

Morning everyone, so still no dev response to this?

There was a dev response back on page 68 or so. They are well aware of the community concerns and it will be relayed to the team.

What this means is that it’s known that there is discontent among the community, but not that something will or can be done about it. For the sake of the devs, I really hope they announce the challenging content soon. I’m going to buy the expansion when it comes off of pre-purchase and I know what I’m paying for, even if it’s not fully worth it right now, because I have gotten more than my share of enjoyment out of the game so far. I just don’t like the idea of pre-purchasing that the gaming community and developers think is the way of the future. Anet might not be the shining angel in the sky we once thought, but they are certainly better than many other devs out there and I see no reason for I, personally, to not continue to support them, eventually.

I bought the game in January for $10 and I /age’d my account last night. I have over 450 hours clocked, which means I’ve paid a grand total of $0.0222/hour to play this game. Compared to when I played WoW, I paid about $0.1533/hour to play that game. GW2’s cost/hour will continue to decrease for me but WoW’s never did because of the sub fee. I do not believe that WoW gave me almost 7x more content than this game does. I only really played WotLK and Cata, so essentially BC and Vanilla content was worthless to me outside of a way to get my characters to 80 and 85 respectively.

Basically the core game is free if you already own it. Meaning your copy of the game costs 0$ and you’re gonna pay for the core game just like any other new player.

So… my copy of the game and all the money wasted on gems (which are bound to the game) have devalued and now I’m buying a new game. Except that it’s smaller and more expensive, if you take into consideration GW2 content / money vs HOT content / money.

Kitten way to go haha

Good job alienating your player base, Anet. And also, nice business practices doing sales of the core game to later make said costumers buy the game again. You’ve spent all your points in the Shadow Arts, my frands.

Hey A-net here is an idea! Instead of hiding behind your fan-boys and PR youtubers how about you actually come out with an official statement on the matter? Don’t get me wrong everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the fact that A-net are being so dodgy about this topic speaks volumes about how sleazy this is.

sigh I don’t think this was a deliberate kick in the face, this was very obviously something someone thought would be a good idea and then did it without thinking of the consequences, but that doesn’t excuse you from your mistakes, own up to them and figure out a way to fix them instead of just pretending they don’t exist

Look A-net I appreciate all that you have done, and I’m sure the “Free game for new players” sounded great on paper, heck I’m not denying it’s a great deal for new players, BUT are you really so cheap and greedy that you can’t kitten give players who already own GW2 800 gems or a Base Game Code to create an alt account?

You can’t ignore this, and the longer you do the more the wound festers and the more kittened off vets you will have, and as a result the less HoT will sell simple as that, and if you do ignore it, well good luck explaining to your bosses at NC-Soft why most of the existing playerbase didn’t buy HoT

I must say this. They have complete kittens in marketing/finance department. They cant even solve gold inflation .Its like they didnt even watch the feedback from forums when peaople said that they think that optimal price for exp. was 40 bucks.Me as customer ,allways weights game (how much am i getting for the price i am paying) this way and so far they showed very little and its not even worth 40 bucks.Even worse is that there is no option to just buy expansion and vets and peaople who bought game on some sale earlier are now screwed over. That is bad practice and Anet shouldnt stay silent. They should act fast and fix this mess and ofcourse sack those fools who thought this was good idea

Im on the fence about getting the Hot, if i did right now i would get the $100 one since i only paid for the $70 one to start so this is all the money ive spent on games basically for the last 3 years so i thank the GW2 for that.

The but here is there is no release date in sight. Ive read some post buy gw2 people and your gonna slowly bring out new info on all sorts of things which is great but i dont want to pay for a game right now if it isnt coming out till november. I dont know if you guys will have different packages of the game or new set ups. Heck what if my computer blew up and i never fixed it.

I would just like to ask for a around this time release date. You’ve talked about specializations, guild halls, and thats great but if i gonna spend money on the expansion i would at least like to know when the money i spent will allow me to see all these new things.

Yea… that is not how gamers act, at all.

Then the people who want to buy it now will, those who want to buy it but don’t want to pre-purchase it won’t buy it now but will buy it later (I’m in this group), and those who don’t feel it is worth their money will just not buy it.

Pre-purchasing/pre-ordering is a bane on gaming in general. Too many games are sold like this now, despite the only reasonable option being to only wait until all information has been revealed and the only thing remaining is the game itself.

I am a veteran, price doesn’t bother me at all nor the lack of character slot, even though can’t deny that would be a good incentive, however there are 2 things which made decide to wait until release date:

1) Not even a pre-order but pre-purchase of a product that doesn’t even have a release date.

I repudiate such practice of pre-ordering and pre-purchasing games that aren’t even on beta state yet nor have a release date at sight. Past have taught us that if you inject enough money on such projects, they will be delivered incomplete as we can take some as examples like Aliens: Colonial Marines, Assassins Creed: Unit, Dragon Age: Inquisition

2) Not enough information about content has been released so far.

I am very picky with my games, I don’t throw money out of the window, even if it is a franchise I am a fan and have been supporting so far. I’d like to know exactly what am paying for and if that’s what am looking forward for a game. If I dislike or think isn’t enough what an expansion or DLC has to offer, I simply don’t buy it. As it is, I can’t make a decision based on so little that has been out about HoT so far.

Because of those two motives, I will wait to buy HoT. If I deem it worth later on, will buy it, if doesn’t satisfies me, as everything in life, time to move on.

Charging the same price for the entire existing game and the expansion for new and existing players is a HUGE middle finger in the face of all existing players.

they are charging everyone with the same price for expansion and throw in the original game as a bonus. Yes, that is a difference. And what about sinking price since release, sales etc? Now, are those middle fingers too for you as people pay less than you originally?

We’ve already paid you

yes. And you received a product and services. Are they going to take that away now? Don´t think so.

supported you

did you send money (cupcakes, drinks, fruit baskets) to anet or something? Probably not. You payed for using a service.

No game in history has ever asked its existing player base to pay more to continue their game than new players. EVER.

which they are not, they are asking the exact same price.

I mean just look at the decline in the new page likes on GW2’s Facebook. Over what, a day…since this all started. So tell me where are these new players going to come from?
Edit: the grey line is last weeks new page likes, and the blue is this weeks.

Not that surprising and it’s probably representative of all social media than just FB. The steady stream they had a week ago was the current playerbase, which is in large numbers currently ticked off. And it’s justifiably taking a plunge now when players either leave, hold off on future purchases (be it HoT or gems) or berate them here for their actions. Whatever fresh blood/new players they can draw with the offer will not make up for the losses of the current players. And ‘Lose a lot, gain some’ – is not going to keep them in the game for long either.

To clarify: $50 is the price of the expansion. We included the core game as a free bonus to make it easier for new players to get into it.

I think it’s a good move and cannot understand the rage from so many players.

But i also think the value of the expansion, for all we’ve seen up till now, is like 10% of what you offered with the original game. And i also think that not including a free character slot was a very cheap move.

The second pre-orders went up I went in game and clicked to check it out, and it felt like a big “kitten you” to the player base.

I don’t care that the base game is included. I think it’s great for them. And it’s helpful to someone like me who continues to make the case to his gamer friends to come and join him in Tyria. It does create a weird disconnect where it becomes more beneficial to buy HoT under a second account.

I refuse to buy a HoT if it doesn’t include character slot(s), and I find it insulting that you are trying to bundle one in for an additional 25 dollars. This is screwing over the current players, and taking advantage of newer ones who won’t know they are being charged an 150% premium for that character slot.

All 3 offers are stupid and insulting. The youtube video posted right after trying to pass off the ultimate edition as some kind of discount was infuriating. You aren’t discounting gems. You are giving 50$ worth of gems for 50$. The little in-game trinkets are not worth anything. Just like a character slot isn’t actually worth 10$. It’s simply what you choose to charge for it.

I really love this game and hope things change so I can pick it up at release. Why not make it right and just make the 5 slots standard for all purchasers, so that everyone who purchases HoT gets the same 5 slots + the game?

As it stands, the pre-order money went to a steam summer sale.

Anet needs to respond to this and they need to do it soon. And after that, they need to start changing their packages to make up for the issues they caused. Adding in some consolation to existing players for not getting the free game will go a long way.

But most importantly, to make up for the most despicable part of this, they need to make up for lying for 6 months and continuing to sell the the core game under false pretenses. I think the only solution that lets them retain any trust would to offer to every player that has bought GW2 since the PAX South announcement an automatic discount on HoT equal to the price they paid for GW2. If someone bought GW2 in March for $40, they should get HoT for $10, without having to request it, and without losing their existing GW2 account.

For those that bought from a source other than Anet’s site, offer a flat discount. Again, doing so automatically. Of course this will give too high a discount to some and too low to others, but it is certainly better than continuing to rip off everyone.

New players buying HOT will have 5 slots so will not need that extra one. They probably will see everything else as gimmicks and will not plan on using gems (vets know better). Some will buy the $75 one, but most will stick with the $50 one.

Vets buying HOT will make another calculation. The extra slot is needed. Since we use gems (albeit at different rates from each other) the 2 things make up $60 plus whatever value you personally assign to the other things (which could be $0).

So this comes back to ‘who is the $75 version for’. New players who know what a finisher is and what ones are available?

Yeah unfortunately no way at this price without even an extra character slot. Never did I imagine that that would be the case or honestly they would have set the price to this level to begin with, but with it “including” the original game for those who don’t have it, I get that part. But for those who already own the game (you know, those people who are 85% of your target market…) this is a pretty raw deal. =(

Didn’t read the thread,

But IMO the pricing will lead to more people playing the game and will give us more competition in WvW and PvP and more people to connect with and slay dragons in PvE

160gold, last I paid for a character slot is a bit steep, but money comes to you in this game if you play, you have a lot of LVL 80’s and you PvE a lot chances are you know how to make a buck. I PvP and have no idea how to make money but I made at least 600g in a few months

I prepurchased for myself & my husband. I’m not concerned about the price.

However, I had been waiting for another $10 base game sale in order to get a second account for myself and my husband.

As the website is currently worded there is NO WHERE that it says the free core game is only for new players. If it’s a bundle, then I want the full bundle so I can get a cheap copy of the base game to play around with on a second account.

I opened a ticket and told them that their wording reads like I should be getting the base game too.

the website says (emphasis mine): A game serial code for account creation or upgrade for the Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns expansion and the award-winning Guild Wars 2 core game.
If you meant it for new players only then it would have been worded: A single game serial code that includes both Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns and the core game that can be used to create or upgrade an account.

There are no restrictions or limitations placed on being able to get the AND part of that statement. None. Not on my invoice, not on the website (except now in this thread after I bought the xpac), not in the FAQ.

It’s an amazing deal for a new player and I don’t fault them for giving the base game to new players. But their shady wording and the fact that I was wanting a second account anyways has me upset. I can’t even buy a copy of the base game for $10 right now even if I wanted to.

The reply from the GM said “Although this is not listed in the website, please keep in mind that the offer is for only one Serial Code that includes both games.”

NOT Listed in the website…they acknowledge that it is not listed on the website, that their wording is shady & deceptive.

That right there? That’s why I’m upset.

I still bought the expansion and I’m going to have lots of fun in it, but Anet has lost a whole lot of respect from me (and lots of future purchases).

On a point of pedantry here, you say that you disagree that we don’t know the exact list of content and then, in the very next sentence, you contradict yourself, saying that we don’t know all the details of all the features. If we knew the exact list of content then we’d know all the details of all the features.

I’d settle for some big ones. How many zones? How many story steps (how big is the story in HoT compared to the size of Season 2?)? What is this challenging group content? Any new dungeons/fractals and any changes to dungeon mechanics? What are the post release plans like?

The ultimate question, for me, is when will this arrive? It’s been, what, five months since they added any new playable content, they’re looking for pre-purchases and they don’t even have a release date yet. And no, a glib “when it’s ready” won’t cut it.

I won’t be buying it either. I have been playing since GW1 Prophecies. But this…. this is so un-respectful from arenaNet. I actually have to pay extra for a character slot… And i don’t even get the core game for another account while they say “Core game = free bonus”. Where the f. is my bonus?

Just check this out,, this is by far the best example of what Anet is doing.

Best example yet for that issue.

I disagree. A more accurate example would be:
Microsoft: We have a new XBox for $200.
User: Oooh, I’ve never had an XBox! Would I have to buy the original XBox first though?
Microsoft: Not at all. This new XBox is based on the original, so all the features of the original are included in this new version.
User2: I already have an XBox. Do I really have to buy the new one? Can’t I just buy.. parts of it?
Microsoft: Uh…. The new one replaces the original.

… etc…

You see, the problem comes when your first Xbox has stuff on it. Stuff that you cannot transfer to your new Xbox. That’s why people want to buy only parts.
I’m sorry, I’m really trying to make sence out of your comment, but I don’t think I can. In my honest opinion your post is really far from accruate.

$75 is for those who want the extra char slot and dont mind paying the $15 extra for the bonuses that would normally cost something like $20.

Didn’t read the thread,

But IMO the pricing will lead to more people playing the game and will give us more competition in WvW and PvP and more people to connect with and slay dragons in PvE

I agree with this, and this is a positive change. That as well as the fact that new players will make the game live longer, however…..
In the end it’s the players who already have the game that are paying for a portion of new players’ core game.

I have played gw from the start . I have all the games on hard copy which i love. I cant see myself buying hot without hard copy and at least 1 new charater slot. All your other expansions gave 2 slots. I feel you are forcing me to buy gems to build a charater. I have been loyal to the game. I have also had friends and family get the game. i feel those of us whom already have core deserve a little more for $50. What I’m supposed to throw away 3 years of work start a new email account and start over? We wait for these expansions in good faith, for Anet to just ignore their loyal fan base. WE purchase the game. we buy gems, so they can do more and we get screwed, gee maybe their fan base dont mean crap to them. The way they have it set right now is that if we order the game we get counted as new players, gee the vetrans in the game dont matter at all

I think it’s a good move and cannot understand the rage from so many players.

But i also think the value of the expansion, for all we’ve seen up till now, is like 10% of what you offered with the original game. And i also think that not including a free character slot was a very cheap move.

Have you considered the possibility that the original game was extremely under-priced? For the amount of content we got, and the amount of enjoyment I have got out of it, I would say the original GW2 was the bargain of the century myself, and HoT is priced more realistically.

Of course we would not have known how good it was to start with, so they had to put a price on it people would be willing to pay. But now I have played it, I am very happy I only had to pay the small amount they charged for it.

Simplicity is complex.

Good feedback is key to getting the developers to listen to you.

PERSONALLY i will not prepurchase HoT atm nor at release, because i dont see any value in any of the 3 bundle worth the money Anet is asking for.

Standar Pack:
- 50$ its almost the price for a full game nowdays and most of the time an expansion cost between 30$ and 40$.
- The amount of content shown so far ,for me, its not worth the price.
- As a Veteran i have to spend an additional 10$ to buy an extra character slot.At the end ill have to spend like 60$ just to try the main feature of this so called “expansion”.

I could then get the Deluxe edition by adding an other 15$ …

Deluxe Pack

Im mostly a PvP,WvW dedicated player and i dont care that much about the pve part of this game.
- Miniature Revenant Rytlock … miniatures are pointless to me
- Revenant Finisher … i dont care that much about finishers either
- Heart of Thorns Glider Skin … the glider mechanics r allowed only in the new maps and since i personally plan to stay there just the time needed to unlock the new weapon specialization,i dont really care.
- Mordremoth’s Bane Guild Hall Decoration … well yes but meh…
- Additional Character Slot …. thats what im talking about.

At the end the only thing i find usefull in this its the extra character slot, maybe an exclusive armor…

Ultimate Pack

- I find pointless to talk about this bundle cos Its basically a Deluxe boundle + 4000 gems with a minor discount.

At the end to me,looks more like an EARLY ACCESS,rather than a prepurchase/preorder and i cant find anything intresting exept the price…and im not gonna pay an early access for an expansion lol.

If things stay as they r atm even on release im just going to buy Fallout4 and wait till HoT price is around 20/30 $

ps: i found this on youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_uKg5QBEjQ&feature=share ahahahaha Day9 made my day ahahahaha
