HoT and f2p
It isn’t redundant, as HoT purchasers are also getting the core game with no restrictions, whereas free players still have restrictions on the core game.
Plus, you know, they’re getting HoT.

but whats the point if they already have an account. If they are getting the expac then the expac upgrade goes through the core game has no meaning.
But new players who pre-purchase HoT today will have core access today with no restrictions. Otherwise why would a new player pre-purchase HoT at all until Oct 23rd?

You just got that explained to you.
guild wars just lost a long time customer for making this game free to play and placing restrictions on accounts, i have played this for 3 years your vets are getting the shaft in this free to play game

I am a veteran, I don’t feel I am getting “the shaft”.
If you are leaving because Anet introduced a severely restricted free-to-play GW2 account for players to test the game and buy the full edition if they like it, then I hope you find an MMO that suits you and isn’t already free-to-play (might be searching a while).

Not really getting shafted since there are a lot of restrictions. Just hope the 2 communities don’t collide in a superiority complex.

There’s already an Elysium (movie) like attitude voiced by some over the last few days that B2P kept the “trash” out and now that anyone is allowed the QoL will plummet. There is no reasoning with that group.
Bright side is if they all quit it can only raise our standing as nicest MMO community.

The amount of elitist posts are overwhelming.

Considering f2p games are known for toxic communities, bots, and hackers; people voicing their concern over this game going f2p is warranted. Ignoring these peoples concern and writing them off because they have different views than you on these new changes only shows your ignorance. You need to remember that an opinion is neither right nor wrong.
Meh I honestly don’t care much in regards to the free to play, I mean they are getting screwged. What I do care about is this BS where since I was a supporter three years ago, I get to pay about $120 bucks for what they get as non-supporters for $50. I mean my issue is simple. The longer we support GW2 the more we have to pay to have what others have for less. I mean it will only get worse the longer this goes. The HoT purchasers will have to pay another $50 when they come out with Eyes of Stone, which will bring them to $100 for their patronage, and those of us that bought the core, then HoT, will end up having spent about $170 when we buy EoS. Which of course is a bs title. My point is very simple. This makes me sad. Long time support costs you more than jumping on at the end.

Happened with LoTRO, which used to have one of the best gaming communities. Many of their changes were done due to new management and money troubles.
Nothing changed. Nothing got better. And as a result both Guild Wars and then Guild Wars 2 certainly benefited from the mass exodus.
Where is LoTRO now? Oh right. Consolidating/merging servers and buggering up those so much they’ve had to postpone them.

The lack of interest for LotRO wasn’t solely the move to free-to-play. There were content decisions that drove several away, such as the announcement that they were no longer producing dungeon/raid instance content and focusing on solo play, as well as the statement that there were not going to be any more expansions.

Except that f2p users don’t get to use map chat and can’t move stuff to other accounts. These are legitimate concerns to be sure, but nobody has shown that the restrictions place by ANet on free accounts won’t deal with them.
Also, the complaints tend to centre around the argument that “I paid for this game, and the fact that people can get a cut down version of this game for free makes me feel angry!”
I don’t care that they get a cut down version for free. I care that rather than being treated as a valued customer for supporting the game at the start, I pay another $50 on top of my original purchase to get the same thing that someone now gets for $50. In other words, as a valued customer that has supported this game for 3 years, and used the cash shop, I get to pay about $120 for what they get for about $50. And when the next expansion comes out I will have to pay $50 for that, and the HoT purchasers will have to pay another 50, and the new expansion people will get it all for $50. So I will end up paying about $170, HoT buyers will pay about $100, and the next expansion purchasers will pay $50.
In other words, I am valued because instead of getting what I bought for a fair price, I get to pay more to keep getting what new players will get for less.
old things get cheaper. deal with it.

A product is more valuable when it is new, so you got that value.
There are also 2 seasons of Living Story.
You also got to see the evolution of Lion’s Arch.
You also got an extra 3 years of playing this game.
I am sorry if this is not worth $50 to you, but it was to me.
First off it wasn’t $50. Secondly, yes there is the living story, which can be bought for chump change. And yes its more valuable when its new. GW2 is not new, and that is fine, HoT is new, and costs less than GW2 did. You cannot use HoT without GW2, which is F2P now with restrictions. I don’t care about that, I think its probably a bad idea, but no big deal. What I care about is that to get what I have they pay significantly less, and over time, I will always pay a massive amount more for the same thing. My time spent playing the game is mine, its not got anything to do with the value of the game. My work and efforts on my characters is not something that can be compared to them not having spent that time. I was not rewarded for that by Anet, I was rewarded for that by myself.
I have played games for decades, I have no issue with paying for an expansion. I do have an issue with paying for something that someone then pays less for while I pay more. If they want to do it this way I could care less. There should be an upgrade fee for existing players, not a fee to get the same item for double the price. If they want to do it the way they are I still wouldn’t care. But the new players should have the same F2P restrictions that those that don’t buy HoT get. Heck they could charge them $20 to upgrade to the full version and I wouldn’t care. My issue is in no way that it is free. its that I am paying more than twice what they pay for the very same game.
bullkitten. what you payed for was the guild wars as it was 3 years ago. living story, new areas, fractals, new world bosses and other stuff you got for free.
f2p players get way more than you got for the full price of the game. are you upset because somebody that bought the game in the beginning of 2015 got much much more than you got back in 2012? get real bro
Still seems like a sign of desperation. Instead of making a game/xpac worthy of attracting new players or appeasing vets to either come back and buy the xpac or refer others to join. they instead open the floodgates hoping some will stick. Games go/allow F2P when they are failing or plateauing, not when they are about to release their 1st expansion.
What I see this as is Anet is obviously making an expansion that’s not worth the $50 they are charging for it, so in order to keep people willing to buy it they have made the core game free.
And in all honesty, they have decided that their existing customers are not worth consideration and respect. I have played many games with expansions. This is the first time I have ever heard of someone being so short sighted as to alienate their existing players by giving the core game for free. GW2 is older, so it should be cheaper. Never argued with that, but this is like my buying a bow and arrow, when the arrows had to be made later. And paying for the bow, then the arrows, and you just bought the arrows and they gave you the bow for free.

Grouping and raids as you mentioned were some of the last nails in the coffin, but free to play came hand in hand with the in game store. Everything began rotting out from under the players after that. And to top that off they had to revamp the character traits from pick what you want to talent trees? Any of this sound familiar?
Guild wars two let its dungeon team go. Not everybody playing is going to want to raid.
Many were/are still hoping for new dungeons/five-man content. Not watered-down versions of the same old fractals we’ve had for the last couple of years. This has the same feeling as LoTRO, where the last holdouts keep calling for Moria instances, Great Barrows, School, Library, and the Mirkwood instances etc. the way they are today.
If what ANET is now trying to positively spin is a shift driven by a financial gun set to their heads by their Korean overlords, then I wouldn’t go getting my hopes up just yet that things are bound to get better here rather than worse.
I want to keep having fun here but all I’ll say is savour what we have -the way it is right now. It has the feeling once again of ‘make or break’ time.

the community is already and again divided, from elitist to casuals, from Anet defenders to angry mobs, from supporters and non supporters, in the end is another stupid discussion, Anet does not care about forum fights, is a company, one that wanna make money, and somehow forget about his “manifesto”, some may say F2P is a proff of a failed MMO, maybe yes maybe not, october 23th is gonna be the day when we see if the 45/75/100 bucks “expansion” is really worth it, if not well were gonna see some rage them but to think that Anet actually cares? well that’s another discussion, in the end the only true thing is that the community is already and yet again broken an toxic, they dont let freebees to post here not to protect us, is to protect them from all of us…

Firstly, season 1.
Secondly, if the cost of Season 2 is so small, why not add that to the cost and be up front about it?
Okay, I paid $120 for my GW2 with HoT and they will pay $75 for their HoT if they want the LS. I still paid way more for the same product.

No. Not the same product. As I pointed out before there were a number of temporary additions that they will never get to play in its original form. Remember, Living story season 1 contained things like the tower of nightmares, Marionette fight, Scarlet attacks etc. on top of this are www seasons and some of the old seasonal events that didn’t get repeated.
So, again I point out, they get less.

I take it everything you’ve ever bought was on release? Car, DVDs, Mobile Phone, Other video games etc.? Many things go down in value after release, I mean fine, if you want to buy Titanfall for £40 go for it, but you know you can get it for about £5 now?
I don’t see this argument, after all the core game has been on 10$ sale a bunch of times already. Anyone that bought the game at one of those would have similarly gotten it cheaper.
I think this is a good move. They get a working "demo" mode for players to try out without spending cash, while everyone that is going to play will want to or feel pressured by other players to get the expansion so they can play together in the new content etc. The only issue is if the limitations to the new accounts are enough or not.
And I bought one of those big packs on release with the huge Rytlock statue in it, and for the life of me can’t figure out why I did that :p If I wanted the game "cheap", then I wouldn’t have picked up the collectors edition, and I would have waited until the game got cheaper (or free).
