The biggest argument for the gating seems to be “its progression but once you unlock it its worht it.”

But after playing for a few hours, it seems most points are gated by mastery grinds. So once i grind my masteries to get my elite spec whats left?

Judging by what i see ill be done the hot maps and my masteries will have a serious dent in them. So i “progress” the entire new content to what? unlock my spec to farm whatever the new SW is and raid? Ok so im not raiding. So what, i grind for weeks finish the hot content to…..world boss train as a scrapper?

im not trying to be rude here but from what i see most of the content will be done by the time i even fully unlock the new spec, so what am i going to do once i have it?

if it is just playing base classes for all of hot and then world boss/silver wasting on new spec after its all consumed can someone please be honest so i can move on?

What, were you expecting it to be handed to you at the beginning? And if it was, wouldn’t you then proceed to not do anything in the new maps and complain there’s nothing to do?

No you’d do everything with this shiny new thing you’ve got.

Or play through most of it, earn the elite and then seeing as you’ve done the content have nothing.

look please dont attack me. i wanted to play the hot class scrapper while enjoying hot content. hot is out. im still playing base engineer. after looking at the gating of hero points, it doesnt seem like there will be much hot content left to do AS scrapper.

im not looking for a fight, but if its just doing all hot stuff as base classes to only be left with chest farms and fractal grinds as scrapper, just be honest so i can move on.

im sorry if im “entitled” to want to do hot content with hot content once hot is released.

sorry im pretty new to GW2 mostly started coz of the reaper and scrapper.

im used to other MMOs that release new classes and you can play ALL the content with them, not do ALL the content and THEN play them.

apologies if i was wrong.

It’s just another layer of progression. Think of it as raising the level cap. It’s like saying “oh why dont they just make us 90 so i can do all the level 90 content”.

thanks but from what i read masteries and fractals were the max content.
but i cant do fractals as scrapper until i unlock it, and i cant do that till i put a HUGE dent in masteries…

see where my dilema is? my basic question is pretty much answered. the majority of the content is done as base specs “progressing” to elite at which point its just back to 3 weeks ago with a hammer instead of a gun.

im sorry for sounded so bummed out about the whole thing im sure others will nejoy the expansion but i was really hoping to kick kitten smack stuff around with a hammer and robots . not do that AFTER doing everything else the expac offered.

thanks guys, enjoy

In with you on this one. I’m such an altoholic that that the elite specs are putting me off. Ive been playing for around 2 hours now and I’ve on o my druid and celestial avatar so far. I honestly don’t h think it’s my own self of entitlement when I say I wan to explore the new map as a druid. Is that too much to ask.

I’m with you, too. It makes no sense to gate the full specialization unlock behind new content grinds or even old content grinds. Effectively, for some time, the expansion will merely be a new zone for me.
And, yes, you can certainly accuse me of having the wrong expectations — guilty as charged — but I’m sure many of us who don’t comb through these forums regularly are in the same boat. I’m not going to make a huge issue out of it, but I don’t think it’s crazy to have expected an expansion to give me immediate access to some really fun new toys.

It’s very annoying to not be able to do any of the content with elite specizalations. Like you said we need to get all the masterys, then the HP, then unlock elite specizalation when everything else is done already. Unless you want to spend a very very long time in wvw. I’m very against how they set this up for sure

Think of it not so much as a specialization to play, as something to get for finishing the rest of the content so you can stick it on a shelf.

It’s like a trophy.

I take it he wants to play the PvE content as his specialisation not play it all then be rewarded with one once it’s done. I don’t understand why people feel it’s unreasonable to want to play the content with the class rather than get it once the content is done.

It’s a time gate.

Wow… It’s clearly in the post what he wants, but I’m nice and simplify it for you.

He wants to play the HoT Elite specs while doing the new HoT content before there’s “nothing” left to do but raiding or jumping on the Open World PvE boss train. Like doing the new hearts or whatever IN his elite specialisation.

Why not do a few rounds of EotM with some WvW XP boosters? Dull as hell of course but will allow you play the new content as a Scrapper.

I’m with the OP on this. This is kind of crazy just how much we have to do in order to use our elite specs. I didn’t expect it to just be handed to us but i also didn’t expect it to be such a grind that by the time i get the thing, that i’ll be so burnt out from the grind that i wont even want to play anymore.

And yes, i get that you can use “half” of the elite spec if you farmed out the hero points before launch, which i did. However, this just doesn’t sit right with me. I would have been perfectly happy with some kind of happy medium. Leave the 400 HP req for the elite spec and even leave the semi maze-like feel to the maps so that its tougher to find the hp points. However, lets not lock so many of them behind mastery points or make them so tough that its almost impossible to do by yourself.

Come on A-net, lets get a happy medium to this, not something thats going to take a month to do if you have any sort of life outside of games. >.>

So to answer the OP, that’s a fair point.
But having a sense of progress toward the final form of the spec is also important. It also permits to slowly get used to all the aspects of the spec and their interaction to the core mechanisms.
I agree this progression shouldn’t carry on all the way to the end of the last map of the expac.

As for my personal experience so far, I started with the full 215 accumulated hero points. It permitted me to unlock almost half the specialization. I’ve “discovered” like 60% of the first map (I haven’t actually explored all the level in the regions, just erased the smokes on the map) and activated a handful of hero point areas.
I only have my three grand masters and three skills (I think) to unlock to fully enjoy my specialization, which I think will be done before I complete the first map.

I will still have at least 2 other maps to discover after mastering the spec.

So I think it’s a pretty decent compromise they pulled out.
(then again I had accumulated the maximum amount of hero point available for 80s beforehand)

I’ve been playing much of the day and am even more of the same opinion as Pezz than when I initially posted. It doesn’t help that the first map has multiple mastery gates to getting to the hero points. I hadn’t played my necro in a long time and had only 69 HP stored up. There are 11 HP spots on the first map, which adds up to 110 HP. Even after I grind up all the first zones mastery, I won’t even be halfway to unlocking the spec. Indeed, I will have completed most of the new content before being able to go full Reaper.
As it should be, the new content is more challenging — which is a positive — but it makes using less than half a specialization even less appealing. I’m up for suggestions regarding accelerating my HP acquisition.
None of this is to say that I disrespect anyone who likes the new system, just that it’s not really working for me.

After actually playing HoT I agree with you OP (had the opposite opinion pre release.)

I’d like to experience the new content on the class/spec I choose to play please.

And my goodness…I have 10 characters….getting each one their elite…no way.

Honestly what did you expect this expansion to be? It sounds like you were waiting for a new game to come out.

sorry im pretty new to GW2 mostly started coz of the reaper and scrapper.

im used to other MMOs that release new classes and you can play ALL the content with them, not do ALL the content and THEN play them.

apologies if i was wrong.

I’m sorry, but you can play the new specs….
When they release the next expansion. You need to spend this expansion unlocking it.

Im failing to see the problem here, maybe it’s just me, but i dont understand what is the difference between this specialization and any other specialization.

When you start a new character, or you start the game fresh none of your specializations are fully available to you, you will always have to play the game to be able to fully unlock all the specializations.

The New Specializations aren’t any different, you need to play the game to gradually unlock the elite specialization, does it take more time to unlock than a normal specialization? maybe that’s why it’s called elite, does it take more time to unlock than all the other specializations when you first start the game? Probably not.

With this said, to be able to unlock the elite specialization you only need 60 points, which isn’t that much, so you can still experience the new specialization by mixing the olds ones with the new ones.

Err have you played HoT? No one wants to use a kitten 60pt whatever intro spec. Especially in this difficult HoT content. You’d be 2/3rds of a character.

Try playing daredevil without the entire line unlocked then come back to me and tell me you can use these right off the bat. No, no you can’t unless you want to purposefully kitten yourself. And the most frustrating thing is that if DD was fully unlocked stepping into the jungle, I would probably be having the time of my life atm. But no, I gotta slog through the entire thing while climbing up grind walls every step of the way just to get to the fun part. That’s not cool.

I would have prefered if they just increased lvl cap instead, this is like jumping through mandatory grind hoops in a -> b -> c nature; there is no way to deviate, it has to be played how ANET wants you to. Play your way my fanny.

Yes I’m playing HoT and enjoying the new specializations, No one wants to start a game at level 1 either, maybe we should all start at level 80..

When you start a game at level one you are facing level one opponents. Starting an elite spec means being effectively sub level 80 while facing post level 80 content.

That was not even the point, the point was before you can reach level 80 you need time to reach it, the elite specialization is no different that is why it is called elite, there is nothing preventing you from using your old build to unlock 2 or 3 masteries to be able to reach the new hero points, and then start building the elite specialization.

It’s the same logic as anything else, before you can start bulding new gear you use the older gear.

So you say people should just run around with 2 and a half trait lines when most bosses will just one or two shot you? When the map was designed for lvl 80 in a decent gear? Hot is not where you’re supposed to level so please don’t compare it to starting as a lvl one when everything you’ll face there will be weak lvl ones, too. Didn’t see any mobs with just half of their skills in Hot, yet.

you’re all missing the point. In the base game once you get to 80 you could unlock everything and you still had content left to finish. In HoT once you get your elite spec, there is little to do other than raid and repeat the same stuff.

They simply messed it up, the elite spec should be available when you mastered the rest, i totally agree on that. Elites specs should be unlockable like any other trait lines and they are.
Now elite spec should cost the same 6-hp like the rest and since they are a major part and selling point of the expansion yes they should be available from the very second HoT releases.

Right now they are forcing us into the new content to earn the right to enjoy what we actually paid for, this is not progression, they actually lock a major part of the content we paid for behind a sad excuse to force people into HoT.
Hell if all i wanted were the elite specs into the core content well i m screwed.

They never said the elites specs were linked to the HoT cntent, yes you get them when you buy the expansion but it should be independent to HoT maps.

Elite specs should be available from the time you hit level 80 or cost exactly the same amount as any other trait lines before it to make it fair once the core lines are unlocked.

Totally agree. I expected masteries to be a long term progression thing. Same with legendary crafting, etc. Elite specs I expected to require an unlock, but one that could be achieved relatively quickly so I could actually play the new content with a fully functional new spec.

Some of us play GW2 because we don’t like the WoW-clone game design with rising level caps and similar crap, but there is not much difference between mastery grindwalls and raising the level cap.

This game just lost much of its appeal for me.

I don’t think you read what i said.. actually i said quite the opposite, i said that you can use your current build to enjoy the new content.

Using the same logic i can only enjoy the new content if i have a decent gear and level my character to 80, so before i can enjoy HoT i will have to put some time and effort.

The new Elite Specialization is no different from anything else, before you can fully enjoy it you will need to put some time and effort.

Will it make any sense to you if someone that just bought GW2 HOT for the first time makes a post demanding his character to be lvl 80 with a set of ascended gear in is inventory so we can start enjoying HoT right way? To me it doesn’t make any sense.

No. Some of us have been playing the same kitten build for 3 kittening years. We are not enjoying it anymore. We are quite tired of it. We are not enjoying it.

Thing is we are demanding what was promised, not to be flat level 80+ ascended gear with a legendary ready and a medal.

Were demanding the elite spec promised with a descent way to unlock it similiar to what we already know, 60HP like any other lines to unlock it would have been fair.

Right now they locked the elite spec behind and insane hp requirements and are not following what they promised about it.
