I feel crafting in Guild Wars 2 is nothing but a chore and a massive time sink/grind wall barring actually interesting content (combat in end game).

If you can give me some measure of assurance that I will be able to better loot ascended level gear, I will buy Heart of Thorns.

Crafting in this game is a heck of a lot better than most other MMO’s out there (especially on the time sink part, other MMO’s have you afk for minutes or even hours to craft a lot of stuff at one time).

As for Ascended acquisition, we don’t know yet if ascended items will drop from Raids (we know Legendary will, so perhaps some ascended drop boxes will as well?).

Otherwise, Ascended items earned by drops seems to be staying almost exactly the same with Heart of Thorns, although I reckon you will be able to find more ascended things from the updated fractals with Heart of Thorns.

Raiding will drop legendary armor precursors which you can then craft to make BiS armor with adjustable stats. Beyond that high level fractals have given me a full set of Ascended armor so far (and then some).

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

Ascended items already drop relatively frequently in Fractals, and now that you can convert all ascended weapons and armor through the Mystic Forge for no more than 10g per item, it’s easier than ever to deck yourself out in the ascended gear of your choosing.

Also, Zalladi is probably right. Anything dropping Legendary pre-cursors might also be dropping ascended loot too. We’ll have to wait and see, but it’s not that bad.

You need ascended gear in order to play Fractals at the level where ascended gear reliably drops. Gear most certainly does not drop frequently for players without agony resistance.

My highest fractal level is 6 or so and I have numerous ascended armor, accessory/ring/amulet and weapon pieces on a few of my characters. I have only ever crafted 3 of the pieces I have and they were all weapons (I have only been playing since this January too). You do not need ascended anything for <10 Fractals. You can save up Laurels to purchase rings, amulets, and accessories all with slots from a laurel merchant. You can also max your agony resistance through 4 agony slots if you have really high agony infusions, or with a couple more if you don’t have them.

It’s really not difficult. If you refuse to craft just because you don’t want to craft, that is entirely your choice, but the fact remains that it is stupid easy to level crafting in this game and they only real restriction is the 100g or so you need if you don’t have any materials to max your crafting.

The crafting system isn’t all that bad in this game but it sure is another minigame which only involves spending of gold to get it leveled. Don’t like trading post though? Trading is and should always be a part of every mmo. I despise the fact that there are materials and gear that are nontradeable.

No thin veils here.

I’m excited for most of the raid news. And gear grinders/crafter players should have shinny legendary armor, imo. But that is all ascended armor or legendary armor should be…just shiny, not required for participation in end game content.

I’d like to play in those raids without having to go through the crafting system or the trading post system.

Yep, I’m from Diablo 3, which doesn’t get loot right either btw (loot in D3 is far far too easy to get). I’m not asking for ascended gear to be easy to acquire. Just make it possible to acquire at a reasonable rate from loot drops.

You guys can defend the crafting system all you like. I think it’s great that so many of you enjoy it. And yes, it is better than most MMOs out there. But I find it interesting that none of you have addressed my main concern:

Why shouldn’t ascended level gear (full sets) be obtainable from looting and just playing the game? Sure, there is a very small chance to loot the gear in Fractals, but nobody here would seriously argue that it is a viable alternative to gearing in full ascended.

Those of you who are in a position to loot a lot of ascended gear most definitely crafted your way to that point. Which is the problem…imo.

Would it help you guys if lootable ascended gear was really ugly so that everyone could see all of your hard work over the years as a crafter?

You want something without needed to work for it.
Currently you can get 5 ascended items without having to do fractals at all.
Those 5 items will put you on 25 AR which is fine up to mid 20’s maybe 30’s if the player is more skilled. I’m sure by than you can obtain more pieces to increase your AR.

Methods of obtaining Ascended Equips are fine the way they are.
This is issue of laziness.

Wow amazing another “i don’t like X content but I want the reward” thread…
You people are amazing, seriously you never stop to impress me.

GW2 is a package (as any other game) and YOU CHOOSE not to do part of it and yet you find totaly legit to ask a way to get reward relate dto the content, once again, YOU CHOOSE not to do.
You don’t want to craft, you don’t want to buy, you probably don’t want to raid/fotm/dungeon either I guess. So basically you decide to skip a huge part of the game and yet complain.

Also for the part that “you have to craft to get the content that loot ascend item”… do you even play the game? you can loot ascend on events, chest, guild mission, WvW loot, and event by simply buy it for some ecto and laurels… Wich is enough to do pretty much anything after.
And the “would you be happy if the ascend looks like crap”… well not alot of people use the Ascend skin on their ascend armor dude…

Hopefully this thread will be lock just like the other similar thread. And I’m pretty sure no one will bring any valid argument, 2 to 3 players will just respond to each other in an endless thread… just likeit happened in similar thread about gear, raid, hard content…

I believe they stated that the raids would be balanced around exotic gear in the PAX announcement of it.

Fractals, you’re out of luck on not crafting unless you get lucky with drops while playing Fractals. But that is the content specifically designed to be balanced around ascended gear. But you can do the lower levels with no ascended gear so you aren’t completely shut out of the content.

And in GW2, you don’t gotta do anything you don’t like really. There’s not much if anything that only has one means of obtaining it. There’s also nothing that locks you out of the content all together if you don’t have Ascended or Legendary or even Exotic. Or the latest skin from the gem store or from dungeons or PvP or WvW. Some players may exclude and higher level fractals do require AR, but by the time you get to that level, you’ve earned enough relics and what not to outfit in trinkets and rings. And you can buy infusions.

And is really that horrible to ask if a mechanic in a game you’re thinking to buy would require you to do something you didn’t like as part of deciding if it’s worth it to buy or not?

And if crafting had been required, he may still have viewed HoT as worth it. Or he might not have. But that’s a subjective decision and different things have different weights for people.

You are absolutely correct. Crafting is a huge part of the game. This is the whole point of my thread. It shouldn’t be.

Well, right now fractals is what will net you Ascended gear without crafting. You just need Exotic. As you level in in fractal reward levels you will undoubtedly get Ascended rings. Infuse that ring with a 5AR infusion and now you have access to level 10-20 (for the most part). Next ring you get, another +5. Can’t remember if you can buy accessories with relics since I use commendations, but then focus on getting guild commendations or save up laurels or something to get the other trinkets you need. +5 those. With +25 AR you can do up to FoTM30. At that point start saving relics to get your Ascended backpiece, if you don’t already have one. At 30 you will start seeing Ascended gear drops. Just keep getting those fractals in each day and eventually you will get a set.

Will take awhile, but as you said, you are less concerned about ease and time and simply being able to get Ascended without crafting.

As others have definitely pointed out, it is far faster and easier to do it with crafting.

It’s not bad at all, and honestly the daily timer on the Ascended mats is only an issue if you already have all of the other mats you need and you’re just waiting. And honestly, in a real pinch, if you have friends or a guild, people are willing to donate their daily mat to you. I do it all the time. Just send me the mats, I’ll craft the Damask or whatever, and send it back to you. Piece of cake.

I don’t like crafting in GW2 either and I have been a sole crafter in many of games.

Now I don’t dislike it because of how crafting works. I love discovering my own recipes. When you craft in bulk how it goes by faster and faster per item you’re crafting. It’s a great setup. I love the actual CRAFTING.

But mats are worth more than the items you’re making. Everything you make is nearly useless. It’s simply a grind to make end game gear with nothing of value anywhere in between.

It’s sad to me that the popular or most common mindset is “Well it is what it is. Suffer like the rest of us” rather than say “Hey, lets suggest something that can improve the experience”

I would love level 1 crafting to cap to have more meaning than end game. Something that could increase the reason to enhance the enjoyment. Account bound unique skins. Selling to merchant is a good chunk of change. Etc etc. There are plenty of options that could improve crafting to make it feel more than just end game gear.

Sorry if this wasn’t quite on subject. But I feel if there were rewards for people to do such other than end game gear even if it wasn’t 100% enjoyable they would find the rewards at least worth the ride.

Thanks, this seems like an okay progression. I’ll give fractals a more honest try and see how quickly I can build the gear. I play mostly PvP and have found a few ascended rings as well as an ascended weapon, so I guess I have my head start.

If ascended gear is in fact not required for Raids, then HoT could be in a really good place for me. Still, I do hope looting gets more exciting/better. Nothing beats the feeling of actually finding your stuff.

Definitely a good head start, especially with the weapon.

You can even buy infusions to give more than 5 AR, though they are more expensive. If you feel the progression of obtaining the ascended gear is too slow compared to how fast you climb up the Fractal ladder.

yeah, I hate crafting in every game ever, but with this one I just bit the bullet, sat down with a guide and maxed out the professions I needed. I’ll likely do that with my alts as well, but thankfully i have a great guild to chat with while I do the mundane tasks

This is exactly on subject. I agree with you. My original post was mostly concerned with improving the loot hunting experience, but my overall distaste for crafting is precisely because of what you mention here.

The crafting system (and trading post) are so obviously part of a scheme by Anet to keep players spending gold and real money in the gem/gold currency exchange. It is a system that produces life jackets (read ascended armor) designed to keep the game afloat while they work out how to deliver PvE content.

To be brutally honest, ascended gear stats (being higher than exotics and open for Agony Resistance) were a huge design mistake. When they should have been developing cool looking skins and more challenging dungeons for us to focus on, we were instead funneled into websites like GW2crafts.net and youtube to find mile long recipes and current market exchange rates. There is no real discovery. There is no real challenge.

I suppose what this thread is really asking is what are the developers doing to correct past mistakes in itemization and rewards.

Aye. I would love to have them touch base on crafting and improve it for HoT. We’re getting map rewards which reward us with mats. . . seems the time is now to really take a look at crafting as a whole.

I’d like to see more people enjoying it. Standing at the crafting stations excited because they are about to reach the next level where they will get the unique skins. (Just an example of course).

My biggest wish is that WvW, Events, and crafting get some love in the rewards department for participating. >.<

Crafting Asc. is a three-edged sword.

  1. The process is not fun. I could say a lot more, but I would venture at least that much applies to a lot of people.
  2. Because crafting is the featured means to get armor/weapons, the secondary means are not very favorable even if you throw lots of hours at the portions of the game where they can be gained.
  3. Without crafting, mats used to make Asc. armor/weapons would sell for almost nothing. Remember selling stacks of silk to a merchant at 7c per, because the TP fees meant taking a loss if you tried selling them on the TP? I do.

I feel people nowadays want everything for free and to never actually earn anything.

It’s ok. You don’t have to have ascended gear. I don’t and I live.

Because wanting a way to get something other than the “prescribed” way is wanting something for nothing…

You really should read an entire thread before you make assumptions about what it’s about.

Nobody here wants something for doing nothing. Its the process of the something and only purpose of that something that makes it very very awful.

Then as you read on you would see the OP wouldn’t mind earning the gear in other ways. Those ways taking a decent amount of time as well.

Some people just wanna be rude to be rude. hmph!

That was a general statement in regard to an entirety of forum. That’s why “i feel people”. So who’s failing logic here? I didn’t point at anyone. Just general sentiment about what’s going around these forums for quite some time now.

Also you can want but they are not obliged to deliver that to you. Lots of people want a lot of different things. Often they contradict each other so that’s a no-go. What I said is also true. If he doesn’t like it he doesn’t need to do it. I dislike crafting so I don’t do it. It’s just that simple really. If you want more then work towards it.

There’s literally nothing rude about my post. I don’t get where you get the idea that it is? I gave advice that I myself followed. I dislike crafting so I don’t do it. No sleep lost over it. Earning in other ways… see above. Many people would want to earn it in other ways as well and these ways may contradict each other. They won’t give in to wants of people for the sake of satisfying everybody because it’s impossible.

I would want a piece of ascended gear of my choice for every 7th day logged reward instead of whatever it is right now. Does it mean ANet should do it because I want to pursue it in that way ?

You do have a point. Lots of different players have lots of different tastes. I certainly don’t want anything for “free” or easy though.

I am genuinely surprised at how many people claim to enjoy gaming the economy and grinding gold/mats….

It is true that different interests are indeed in competition, and if the developers were to design a game where people could earn ascended gear directly from playing content then certain existing players who enjoy the long grind or market manipulation will lose…

We can’t have it both ways. At this point, the simple answer for me is not to buy HoT until I can see evidence of the developers philosophy on loot rewards (hence my original post).

If you add all the time you spent writing posts and reading in this thread you probably could have leveled whatever you want crafted by now. You can also buy the time gated end products from TP – the time gate is installed so people can sell and make money from crafting (something that was missing at launch).

If they are anything like me, I hardly ever browse the forums if I could instead be playing the game. The computer I’m not now can’t run GW2, but the forums are a nice way to keep up with the game community even if I can’t play.

Your so-called “general statement” was made in a particular thread with a particular topic. It was absolutely aimed at posters in this thread, or there would have been no need to make the point in this thread.

Whether ANet will cater to a particular desire or not is immaterial to discussion of that desire. That’s out of posters’ hands. Asc. was put into the game at least in part due to expressed desires. Asking for an alternative means to “work” at something harms no one.

Those of you who are in a position to loot a lot of ascended gear most definitely crafted your way to that point. Which is the problem…imo.

This is actually untrue, atleast for me, but i’m sure there are people out there with the same experience as me.

I got to the point where you needed ascended items in fractals, by getting ascended ring drops in early stages (which can be done without AR) , put some AR on those rings or rather infuse them first with the items you get as loot from the same fractals, this gives you enough AR to move higher, you can do guild missins or save laurels to fill up the amulet/accesories. Which again allow you to move up higher in fractals, and which point you can use the tokens to make an ascended backpiece in the mystic forge (would hardly call mf crafting, but still if you don’t even want to bother taking out 10s to put 4 items in mf , you dont ahve to) because at this point you’ve already reached the point where ascended armor/weapons have a chance to drop.

So while i’m sure crafting the armor/weapons is a lot faster, you do not need to. You can get the items you need to level fractals from both fractals itself (backpiece/rings) and laurels/ecto’s/guildmissions (amulet/accesories) at which point you’re high enough AR to be able to get it as a drop in Fractals.
