I hate HOT but want to enjoy it
i hate that too but i usually slightly build my cha to handle such situation if i explore alone. Also i will plan my route in order to avoid aggo the raptors.
When i think i am gonna hit multi groups i will rather clear one group then proceed. In the jungle, we have to be careful and it is not as casual as core maps.
Raptors first surprise killed my mesmer too. Then I learned. It was only once.
Had some trouble with Revenant at start too (still learning the class). Now I laugh in the face of the raptors, can take down whole group in 3 hits and they’re not touching me.
And those sniper ninja frogs, yeah, those guys. Just had to learn their attack patterns and not ignore them. They’re pleasure to kill now.
Want to hear the harsh truth? The vanilla game made us too lazy and bad. You can’t just brainlessly aa every mob anymore to win. You actually have to press some other buttons and time some stuff now. Ever played any other mmo? Not all of them have the nice big red aoe indicators that GW2 has. Yeah, even in the jungle, HoT is not hard. It’s not braindead easy anymore (what part of original open world game was hard?) but it sure ain’t hard.
From another perspective, HoT is hard, until you learn how to handle different mobs/situations. Then it becomes a doable-but-healthy challenge.
Just speaking about raptors in particular, they were surprising at first, but they have low HP individually, which makes them very susceptible to AoE damage. If I’m not careful, they might down me, but I can usually res once or even twice in the same fight by killing individual raptors. It helps to keep moving, too, since their attack pattern works best when you’re surrounded.
The number of group-required hero points can be frustrating, since you can’t tell they require a group until you’re there in person. I recommend trying to find a hero point train, where a commander will lead a group of people through all the hero points in a map. You might not be able to get to all of them, depending on which masteries you have, but you’ll have enough people to do the events. If no one is advertising one in map chat, try using the LFG tool, and if no one is advertising one there, just start your own group with a message like “Trying to do hero points, would appreciate any help!”
HoT is tough for open-world PvE, but you can definitely improve over time with it. Good luck!
Thanks everyone for the replies.
So in summary:
1) git gud – can no longer mindlessly dash around spamming the attack keys. Gotta learn attack patterns and so on.
2) git help – many things u cannot do solo – get a hp train or ask for help or lfg.
Thanks ill try – i really want to have fun with hot!

Almost. Stop running a zerker build, core mentality ‘kill before getting killed’ does not always work in HoT. Have some skills to protect you, have some skills to cleanse conditions and get an armor with atleast toughness or mix a little. I think I am running soldier/berserker stats on my engineer and I rarely die and I can solo all non-group content. But if you are good you can run full zerker, with my thief I use full zerker, I die alot more than with my Engie but I still manage to advance both in story and on the maps.
So summary in my opinion.
- adopt to the new maps, this is not core GW2.
- get good.
- find groups of other players to help you with group content.

I love playing GW2 core. Its a masterpiece in many ways.
In HOT my typical experience is:
1) need mastery and hero points
2) find some on map i dont have yet
3) get killed on way to new spot
(Or killled when i get there)I feel like a big chicken as i dash and run away from mobs
Only to get swarmed and eaten by a bunch of baby raptors. What am i doing wrong? Does anybody find this fun?
Any advice would be appreciated as id like to enjoy hot.
Thanks

The problem I’m hearing is your gear is not up to par, and you’re running into a swarm of mobs. If so both need to be addressed. Rule #1, don’t rush your way to your objective. That’s a fool-proof plan to get yourself killed. Instead work yourself through the area. HOT wasn’t designed for that type of play. You have to be cautious and have situational awareness otherwise you’ll be destroyed. The Maguuma Jungle is a much harder area than Tyria proper.

Wait until you get up to the canopy bosses in Verdant Brink. So much fun! Really challenging boss fights. My absolute favorite is the Wyvern Patriarch on the Canopy over Pale Reaver Rally. It’s really challenging for several reasons:
- Compared to size of the Precarious Perch the Wyvern is huge
- the Wyvern has a wing buffet ability that can knock you off
- Minions will blanket the entire perch in fire forcing you to jump off and glide to alcoves and crevices to take out the minions
IMHO the best boss fight.

I love the multidimensional aspect of the maps in HoT. It allows my ranger to really shine, finding a good nook where I can still lay the heat down on the boss and avoid a lot of fire at the same time.
Also, it helps to bring a friend or at least someone with the same mindset as you. Besides, exploring together is often more fun than exploring alone
When I first got in the HoT maps I tried to power my way through in order to finish my specialization as quick as possible. The problem with that left me confused as to where people were in a map and contently dying by trying to race to uncover the map or capture a hero point.
My turning point into loving this whole thing was, this is going to sound dumb, finally realizing each map has many continuous story events rather than core’s semi random events. I changed my focus from run-n-gun pokemon trainer trying to catch them all into staying in a general area of a map and do map’s story/events. The next thing I knew I was having a great time and I had the most needed masteries.
If your simply in need of mastery points then find a hp train or use lfg and see if you can’t get some peeps to help you out with one hp. Chances are unless the map working on the end of the maps meta event somebody probably needs the hp as well.
HoT is great fun for me. You only need to learn how to kill/avoid mobs, because they are not so easy as Core one. After that it is all about surprising foes and killing them oustide the view of their mates.
that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”

The heart of thorns map is what I consider real max level maps in that it’s challenging. However, in no way it’s unfair. First thing you need to do is respect the monsters in your path. Understand their strengths and weaknesses. Raptors are frail and can be cleaved down. They also leap at you a sec after entering aggro range and pause for a long period afterwards. Dodge the initial attack if your opening strike does kill them and punish their windup time. Look before you leap, many dangers can be avoided by taking in your surroundings. Many of the monsters have a set pattern. You may die a few times figuring it out, but they’re not random and chaotic. When you successfully get it down it’ll be rewarding and feel great. If you get frustrated, know that I belive in you.
You can run berserker builds fine, the caveat is that you need to be snappy on active defence, and know how many ways you have to avoid damage before the gig is up. Pocket raptors are especially annoying in this regard as their behaviour is… Flakey? I’d say more or less broken, but we can go with flakey: Often they will ignore you, sometimes they will “follow” you and deal damage despite being nowhere close to you physically. It’s best to aoe them fast to deal with their constant damage before it gets out of hand. I would recommend a ranged weapon and slotting active defense skills that will throw you away from whatever is attacking you. Some mobs have skills that can immediately down you, so you may find that fighting veterans and elites is best accomplished by stun lock, or using dash type skills to put distance between them. Of course, that way you tend to run into raptors…

I must say that i enjoy exploring HoT map but i also hate them the most. I love them for the intensity of mob and their strength, any mistake i made can cost me a life. There are also many players around need help. That made traveling un these maps got a lot of things to do, take care of yourself and otherplayers.
What makes i hate these map is the HP, i love to steal HP like the core maps that it takes some skill to do so otherwise you have to face the champion alone. I hate the HoT HP you need to bring friends to do it.
You are not forced to do anything in GW2 you dont like , so why do it?
I thought it was going to be too hard too. So I didn’t buy the expac and I certainly wasn’t going to pre-purchase it.
I’ve been in it about oh, two months now and I’m really enjoying it. I heard there was a patch that made things easier but I’m too much of a n00b to notice. What I can say is, it’s all a learning curve. As has been said, you can’t just stand and tank like
you used to – builds, gaining MP’s and HP’s… experiment until you find a thing that works..
As for the raptors, yes I got surprised once. Now my pet takes the brunt of ’em while I hail billions of arrows down on them from a distance. Works for me.

You are not forced to do anything in GW2 you dont like , so why do it?
Because the rest of the game doesn’t have the same rewards that Hot does, i’d gladly ignore hot if Core Tyria gave me the same rewards.
What rewards do you feel you are missing out on?
pve, raid, pvp, fractal, dungeon, world clearing, legendary questing.. Zapped!
I found the easiest way to get those points in HoT was to do the meta events. Find an active map in LFG—>Open World —>choose map, then jump in on the events. You will get lots of XP and loot and will get you a good bit of mastery points (you get MPs from completing parts of the meta, not just from MPs that are on the map!), plus it will likely bring you close to a MP you need and all of the mobs will be dead so you can investigate how to get them (or heck even ask people around you at that point) without having to run away from enemies.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
What rewards do you feel you are missing out on?
Everything hot has that Core tyria does not, Auric weapons, Bladed armor, loot crates that are all over the map, flax the list goes on.
And what would you do with flax?
It has no use to you.
There are not loot crates all over the map. VB has night time events that have airship crates that contain next to nothing useful for you. Some green gear, some account bound stuff you can’t do anything with.
You can craft Auric weapons
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Auric_weapons
You’d need a high crafting profession and tons of mats you probably don’t have.
You can get them from PvP which I don’t think you do.
You can get free ones from doing the story but they are PVTC stats which may not be any use to your build. However all you have to do is the story, not grind Hot.
The list doesn’t really go on. There are new mats. That aren’t worth much. Orr has much better value mats in seaweed, truffle. Orr has much more accessible nodes for ori and ancient wood. Orr has great, farmable events for karma for temple armour that might let you enjoy HoT better.
pve, raid, pvp, fractal, dungeon, world clearing, legendary questing.. Zapped!
I wanted to like HoT as well. But after dealing with all the crap there, I only ever go back if there’s something I want from there. Otherwise, I stay in the core maps, where the fun actually is.
HoT’s mobs, like the core game’s mobs each have one “main mechanic” that you have to learn.
Unlike the core game’s mobs, however, the HoT mob’s mechanics can actually kill you.
In Core tyria, Ettins smash for a stun. Fight some Ettins, you learn to dodge the stun. Wolves howl to summon more wolves. Fight some wolves, you learn to interrupt the howl so you don’t have to waste time killing mobs that don’t drop anything.
List goes on, but each mob has usually some basic attacks and one “trick”
However, most of the mechanics of the core mechanics aren’t lethal, and can often be safely ignored, even when playing solo. HoT follows the same design pattern, but each mob’s ‘trick’ is potentially lethal if not countered. Pocket raptors swarm attack all at once for a high spike from the pack. Hammer Mordrem have a big cone. Snipers have a sniper shot, frogs have the fan shot or the slow dagger chain, mushrroms have the explosion/damage pools, etc.
HoT’s mobs are only super lethal until youl earn how to fight them, but unlike core tyria, you don’t have the option of choosing to not learn how to fight them. In Core tyria, not countering mob mechanics just results in a less efficient fight. In HoT not countering mob mechanics can result in your death.
If you want to love HoT but find yourself dying a lot, start by learning your opponents. Every one of them has a simple to learn counter, and the beginning bits of each zone generally let you fight one or twoat a time individually to give you an opportunity to learn their patterns and how best to fight them.
Good luck!

Sometimes I run around there in my underpants and it’s fun. I found finishing the masteries and choosing the right utilities to be the most useful thing.
Is HOT a gear based zone?

Hot’s an 80 zone why would anyone use green gear anyway. Just leveling now you get rares and exotics.
Pay attention to what the mobs are doing and learn what kills you. Once you got a hang of their skills and what you need to deal with it they aren’t so scary anymore.
Some things you just need to dodge/block/whatever.
If you’re having trouble surviving defensive gear like soldier’s makes it easier. Try a more defensive build and switch out weapons/skills, traits and utilties that were useless in the core game can be VERY handy in HoT like knockdowns, stuns, projectile defense and stun breaks.
Don’t feel too bad about failing, HoT is harsh and everyone got smacked around at first. Just take a moment and think about how you died, what you did wrong and what skill/trait you have that can help on your way back and you’ll soon have a build you like.
If you’re a bit lost ask map chat or your class forum for advice.

Feels like a weird question. If you are level 80 and have got to HoT you should have rare or higher gear just from your story and doing world bosses. You should have some exotics from login rewards. You should have used your login laurels to buy ascended trinkets. If you got the level 80 boost you have a full set of level 80 exotics to use on a character.
I’d be surprised if anyone downgraded the gear they’d been given at this point to run round in greens. It’s possible to avoid most fights so you could run round HoT naked if you wanted but it’s slightly mad, any splash damage would ruin your progress round the maps.
However that doesn’t mean someone isn’t doing just that and actually enjoying the sneaky stealthing or frantic running or honing their dodging skills.
So never say never, tl;dr there may be someone doing this and loving it.

The patch made various things easier but it didn’t make any changes to the combat. It was more to do with currency acquisition, rewards in general and time commitment.

Actually I am cheap and I do never get the stats I want from drops and so on. I usually get green/blue gear to try if my build works in HoT. If I have decided to continue with that stats I then buy or get the exotic gear I have stored. But playing with blue/green in HoT is possible but it is a little harder.

So you dont like progression? Im sorry but it doesnt sound like rpgs are your cup of tea, I love those aspects of the game. Im only talking about your concern masteries and exploration.
I really like the HoT zones. Some very challenging pve areas, as many have said. You can’t run around on autopilot in HoT like you can in most of normal pve……makes for much more interesting exploring, imo. And there are good drops and rewards to be had in HoT.
And the raptors are nothing, once you get used to them. The very worst thing you can do is run from them, as then they normally kill you, unless you have a good head start and some speed. As others have said, they don’t have many hp, and they’re very vulnerable to aoe of any sort. Turn, face them, and take them down in a matter of a few seconds…..they’re truly that simple, once you get used to how they attack.
They wilt like wimpy flowers under arrow barrage from my Ranger. I don’t even like pulling them singly anymore…..I like to see them all come as a group, then I wipe most of them with barrage, and take out the last couple stragglers with my pet and either my lb or gs, although I can usually just dodge and watch my pet munch on the last couple.
Mmo players with a screw loose vs mmo players with two screws loose. All very important stuff.

Not without the bits that Auric sellers have, so i must farm AB to get the bits.
Nice stereotyping i have every crafting at 400 some at 450..
No i don’t enjoy PvP in any game
I’ve gotten some from story but you only get one per character, the story is incredibly hard as well solo, i’d say as much as the map completions.
Funnily Orr used to be insanely hard but guess what many complained, now its quite playable even for me.

baby raptors most fun!! reminds me of that Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail movie. When they see the little cute white bunny rabbit at the mouth of the cave and bones and blood scattered all around and can’t believe the rabbit did it, then approach and see the rabbit tear one of their friends to shreds and then say "RUUUUN, RUUUUNNN AWAY!
I feel the baby raptors are kinda like that when you stumble across them the first time.

Actually, these maps are big and most events are doable without masteries in like VB, while exploring the map and doing Events and event chains while exploring will give enough EXP to continue to the places you can’t reach. Unless you run around avoid events and enemies you should not have been able to explore the map that you can explore without masteries without getting enough masteries to get to note places. Now the tricky part is to choose what mastery you want to learn. If you wanna max out gliding before anything else then you are doing it very wrong.

imagine the waiters at a restaurant started hiding the chairs, and then told you to
“sit down and enjoy your meal”
i pay for entertainment..not annoyanceActually, these maps are big and most events are doable without masteries in like VB, while exploring the map and doing Events and event chains while exploring will give enough EXP to continue to the places you can’t reach. Unless you run around avoid events and enemies you should not have been able to explore the map that you can explore without masteries without getting enough masteries to get to note places. Now the tricky part is to choose what mastery you want to learn. If you wanna max out gliding before anything else then you are doing it very wrong.
and thats the problem, i really hate events, so i dont do them
like i said, i like progression, but not for any price
BTW , if players really like some content, they will do it, regardless of the reward
much of the later content is purely reward based= its BAD content
proof? try nerfing the rewards, and see how many players will stay
Thanks
GfSo you dont like progression? Im sorry but it doesnt sound like rpgs are your cup of tea, I love those aspects of the game. Im only talking about your concern masteries and exploration.
a normal RPG would give the player the tools , to play the content
earning the rights, to play the content, is simply content stretching
thats a bad thingHow do you not have the tools? He said he doesnt like the masteries and sense of unlocking therefore, that tells they dont like a sense of progression which what is an rpg, you have the lfg tool, just because you cannot solo everything doesnt mean you dont have the tools:)
Im not trying to be rude its just how this sounds to me.
of course i like progression, but in this case, the annoyance is simply too much , to get the progression
much of the map is simply unavailable, unless you have all the relevant masteries
and, you can only GET those masteries, by playing on those maps

You hate events? Is it just me or do you just not make much sense in this thread, events are a huge part of pve, and hot was for mostly pve, do you prefer hearts to level in pve then? And how is it bad design to earn stuff from those maps? Are you not doing the story line in hot or something?
This is why I question if you like rpgs, take for example some of the elder scrolls games, you needed to explore certain areas to find items, there are plenty of rpgs out there where you have static items until you unlock the area and explore it, in fact id say more then half the rpgs out there are like this. Its fine if you dont like rpgs or prefer them a certain way but dont call it bad design just because it isnt your prefrence.

I don’t really understand, events is a big part of the game it is GW2 answer to other MMO’s quests. I never said that you should repeat the event but to follow the events, enjoy the story of them, enjoy the awesome scenery of the jungle and all in all play the game. If you don’t like event and just skip every event and skip every enemy… what is there left to do in the game PvE?
I myself can’t stand grinding or farming so I only do the stuff I find enjoyment in doing so yes, I do not care about rewards that much, I did events for the story before the update where events now give better rewards, if I ever find content I do not like I will rarely do it, like I haven’t played www, fractals or raids in a good while and raid I have only played about 2-3 times.

Some people seems to want to get everything just by walking forward and killing easy things in masse. GW2 actually give low rewards for only killing mobs.
Maybe that is the problem? Old Ragnarok Online mentality about how a MMORPG should work?
that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”

I am spending a bit more time in HoT and making some progress on the masteries but it still feels like the part of guitar practice where you work on your scales and technique rather than playing the stuff you really enjoy.
In the longer term those scales make you a better player but, meh…
Ahh yes, pocket raptors. At first I was “Oh, how cute! ow! OW! AUUGH!”
Now, with my reaper, I like to aggro 2 or 3 groups of them as I cast a well, shout “rise!” and spin them to death while in shroud. It’s lots of fun.
Those Smokescales are no joke though!

I have to say, I was excited about HOT. But, the experience has been dismal. I still haven’t even completed one map. There is at least one map I haven’t even made it to yet. I keep going around in circles. I can’t find one spot I need to get to even in the personal story, so my progress has halted on that. I’m so incredibly lost in HoT maps, and then I just get swarmed and killed. I literally HATE the expansion. I play for maybe 20 minutes then just give up and go map the old maps for the 20th time.
I completely admit I haven’t had a lot of time to play over the last many months, but still, when I do play, it isn’t going to be on the new maps where all I get is frustrated.

No I didnt say that at all but your complaining about rpg elements when clearly this is an mmorpg, im sorry if this sounds rude but its no ones else’s fault you didnt research the game before you bought it based on your prefrences or maybe you did and it just appeared different to you from reviews or whatever you may have watched and read.
I didnt say anything about these being mine either but these prefrences are standards in rpgs that was my point. Also you said it was a bad design when in fact it isnt, it may be a bad design in your opinion but thats because you dont prefer these kind of rpg elements therefor you where not clear and simply stating its bad design.
