In MMO lingo,
Warrior refers to a mostly melee or fully melee character that uses his combat experience and armor to rampage across the battlefield, in some MMORPG the “Warrior” class uses medium armour and fast strickes but this definitation usualy fits better the “Fighter”/Rogue/Barbarian.

And yet the Warrior in Guild Wars 2 is far from a mostly or fully melee character.
A warrior in itself however is very much something that every single class is.

Warrior, Guardian, Thief, Ranger. All more generic and cliche than Dragonhunter. And all of our characters could be a warrior (fighter), guardian (protector) or ranger.
Why specify Warrior as Warrior when every one of our characters are warriors?
No. Warriors are warrior and mesmers are mesmers. Where in the game has “warrior” been used as a blanket statement to call everyone?

Well I was just saying I could see it either way, not getting baited or anything. All things considered, we’re at war with the dragons so why specify a particular profession as Dragonhunter? But anyone who fights battles as their profession, be it through firing arrows or guns or wielding a knife or sword, they are warriors, so why specify a particular profession as Warrior? Or any group of people that fight side by side in an army are Soldiers so why specify particular professions as Soldiers?
I.e. yeah the logic can make sense…when you ignore other logic.
I think the name is nifty. But it’s not amazingly cool. I get that people are likely hung up on the name because the part ‘hunter’ comes with a particular theme that doesn’t really go with the Guardian’s theme. I think that’s okay because the specialization isn’t a guardian…a guardian is a guardian. That said, I’m starting to feel the deviation from Guardian might be a tad much. Nothing wrong with a trap wielding, ranged capable ‘Guardian-eque’ spec, but ‘hunter’ sort of fits the ‘adventure’ professions (Ranger being the stereotypical hunter and Thief being like an ‘assassin’ or ‘bountyhunter’).
Perhaps a more fitting name might be Dragonbane if we were sticking with the dragon theme (although the wings should be dragon wings!!) or one I liked, Arcwing/Archwing.
No. Warriors are warrior and mesmers are mesmers. Where in the game has “warrior” been used as a blanket statement to call everyone?
This is a couple of definitions of warrior:
One who is engaged in or experienced in battle.
One who is engaged aggressively or energetically in an activity, cause, or conflict:
A person engaged or experienced in warfare; soldier.
A person who has shown great vigor, courage, or aggressiveness, as in politics.
A person engaged in, experienced in, or devoted to war
That fits every single profession in the game.

Well my only problem with dragon hunter is… well looking at the specialisation there’s nothing really dragon hunter-y about it. Maybe I’m missing something, but the specialisation details don’t really match what I would consider someone who hunts dragons :/

Dragonhunter is definitely an ugly name (although I’m French, and the name sounds cool in French)
But the worst part is that it doesn’t make ANY sense !
It just seems to be coming out of nowhere.
What’s the actual link between the theme of this character, his abilities, and his name ? Any explanation I can find seems totally far-fetched.
It seems like they wanted to put a “dragonhunter” somewhere, so they randomly gave the name to the guardian spec, because (HOPEFULLY) they already had better names for the others…
And of course it doesn’t fit into the lore… I’m curious to hear what WoodenPotatoes will say about that.
Combine that with the fact that we are ALL dragonhunters to some extent, and then you have the perfectly failed spec name.
And if you feel like it’s not a bad name for this spec , just do the thing in reverse and try to imagine how you would design a Dragonhunter (without being a Guardian spec). You will certainly think about something that has nothing to do with this character, aside from the heavy armor.
It feels like a placeholder name they kept because they think it sounds cool, although it makes no sense.

Maybe it has something to do with its elite ability Dragon’s Maw, but otherwise yeah no I’m not seeing the thematic connection. hopefully in tomorrows livestream they’ll explain, until then I’ll just go on assuming I’m missing something.

I keep hearing the French name sounds cool. What is it in French?
Its like this:
In Sega’s Phantasy Star Series (and online games) everyone is a hunter, one who seeks out and destroys whatever threatens the universe. But not everyone is a Force or a Ranger or a Hunter "hunter"class. They are all hunters, but unique traits and skills makes them different in the Hunters’ Guild of Hunters.
Now taking that into consideration, what if Guild Wars in general, had a blanket term for all of us?
I guess we are just called Heroes?

I feel the same way. As a player that mains and loves guardian above all classes, I woke up excited to hear about the specialization. The changes are cool and exciting, but when I read the name.. All I thought was WTF??
Linguistically its a clumsy mouthful – I`m surprised they chose this name.
I keep hearing the French name sounds cool. What is it in French?
It is Draconnier.
Not everybody will like how it sounds I guess, just a matter of personal taste.
But at least there are two good things about this one :
- It doesn’t have the “Hunter” part. It’s still related to dragons but in a very vague way. Also it is closer to the already existing names that are only made with one word.
- It’s not even a real word ! (Dragonnier is a word, but it refers to dragon tamers or dragon riders) Which means we can consider it as something that is specific to Tyria, a quite unique archetype that you can mold (more or less) into something that makes sense for GW2.

Draconnier.
It is a name I’ve seen and read before in the Fantasy (there was this book in my neighbourhood library which talked about a kid becoming one, taming a huge kitten Dragon and all, I was really hooked when I was a kid).
I prefer it because it is simpler (one word) and is tied to Dragons without being too specific. The Draconnier know the Dragons. Maybe he tames them, maybe he hunts them, maybe he simply study them. That’s up to him, but he knows them all too well.
Edit : well, Ojyh was faster.
But as he said, it isn’t a real word in French (even if it can be used, as I’ve written above). But I’m quite happy that they didn’t translated it by Chasseur de Dragon or Dragonnier (Eragon is a dragonnier, not my Guardian !)
(edited by Valmir.4590)
I mean Dragonbane would be fine and Draconnier actually sounds cool. Why not just call it Draconnier in English as well.
It would be quite hard to pronounce for non-french speakers, I think. The first part is easy, but the double “n” followed by a sound which is closer to some misspelled “yeah” than anything seems not really easy to use.
If they absolutely want to keep a name that is tied to dragons they should try something similar.
In English it would be something like Draconeer.
But it won’t solve the rest of the problem.
Well people wanted a “Dragoon” , even though most had the Final Fantasy Dragoon class in mind.
Nevertheless, still a weird and in my opinion stupid name. It just doesn`t make sense in any way and feels totaly forced.

it shouldn’t even have anything to do with dragons imo…

I agree !
I have talked a lot about the fact that is a stupid name, and it doesn’t fit to the character etc… But generally, my opinion is that NO profession and NO spec should even represent that kind of archetype.
Alas it seems almost impossible to change things this way, so a better option would be to find a cooler name and bring more consistency to this archetype so we can accept it even if we don’t really like it.
quincy?
it’s maybe from an anime but the logic is written everywhere on the spec.
None of the names should be more than one word. The single worded names are somewhat more and more appealing.
Why Dragonhunter? Because ranger was already taken. Zing!
If my theories on how the dragon hunter specialization is going to come about lore wise come to pass I suspect the name will be quite fitting… My friends and I are of the theory that Eir is going to die and that Bhram is going to take up her bow in order to extract vengance on Mordremoth and the other elder dragons. Making him a well, Dragon Hunter.
To quote myself from another of these threads..
I say we wait till we have a little more info on why they’re named what they are before we riot.

I like it! We should just use the French name then and make it like a title related to lore.
As for the people saying it shouldn’t deal with dragons, I’d say wait until we know more about it. They mentioned that the specializations were suppose to have a link to the lore of the Jungle and considering the whole Glint’s egg angle, maybe there’s more to the specialization than we’re seeing.
But in that instance, I think a “Dragon tamer” or “One who studies dragons” might seem better than simply hunting dragons.

What would have been lingualistically better in English the DRAGOON or for German, " Dragoner" which would be the most fitting synonym for “Dragon Knight”, but howev,er everythign of the wrohle crappy design of the dragonhunter, which just looks so silly as it it sounds, because even in proper eEnglish it should be written dragon hunter, but that again would ruin Anets kind of way how the name their profesisons, so they made out of it simply dragonhunter, when in fact Dragoon would have been the far better choice simply, is just so totally ridiculous, because Dragoon is in fact same as accected as fantasy term for a dragon knight, like chronomancer is generally accepted as fantasy profession term for time mages, same as like Necromancer is generally accepted as fantasy profession term for occultic summoners
Yes, everyone in Tyria is a Dragon Hunter, thats what our heroes live and die for everyday in Tyria to hunt the elder dragons and their minions.
We kill everyday tons of drakes, soon even wyverns in HoT, as like also other types of dragons.
Never seen before in a MMO such a clicheeful specialization for a profession, like this, that is so extreme uncreative as it is at the same time totally unfitting and unmatching in regard it ins whole gameplay design based on its name in return >.<
Just totally disappointing. I only hope the next guardian elite specializatino ,whenever we will see it, will be something of much better and fitting quality, similar to the Chronomancer was for the Mesmer, that really felt like a totally fitting integration and improvement of what the Mesmer gameplay provided already without totally alienating the gameplay of the class and adding to it gameplay elements which don’t fit to the theme and game design of the profession at all.
Something like Crusader, Templar or Patron
Why did I just knew it, that they will screw it up after just the mostly perfect Chronomancer >.>
PS: but why do I have the feeling that they just didn’t name it Dragoon, out of soem weird copyright violation fears in regard with Final Fantasy, because of the term being so iconic with that game ??? Just guessing …

Well, the hunter part of the name comes from using a bow + traps, and because it is solo rather than with a pet, that makes it a non-ranger.
The main thing it is hunting is a Dragon and Dragon minions.
Thus, Dragonhunter, was born.

Well, since this Elite Specialization will have access to traps, they will be able to stealth via Runes of the Trapper…
Pay attention people, Dragonhunter =/= dragon hunter(yes, it’s a little bit of sarcasm, but if you want to be picky, it’s all in how you define the wording).
