Multiple Portal Drops
Its Flawed .. Farmed silverwaste 6 hours a day since last Tuesday and i have NO PORTAL.
I can’t even remember how many buried chest i opened in Dry top .. maybe 250-300 ? and the only fossilized insect i found .. well i didn’t found it , i earned it in a PVP reward track.
There is something really wrong in this game

Random Number Generator is random. Beta access isn’t about fairness or rewarding players… it’s about getting a random cross section of players with SW/DryTop (and therefore easy access to expansion areas) unlocked.
It’s not about you. It’s never been about you. It’s about finding bugs in the expansion early, so we won’t have to deal with them at launch.
PS: Personally, I’m torn about whether I’d really want to play a small part of the expansion early. Sure, I’m as impatient as the next gamer, but do I want to get teased on a little bit of a new area that will probably be filled with bugs? And if the content is good, it’s just going to make me more impatient for the full launch.

What does it matter if I got 1 portal or 5? I’m still in the beta either way. It’s not as if me getting into the beta I stole one of your chances to get in. It’s simply a % drop chance regardless. At most you can complain I got 1 gold extra due to a drop item which is completely ignorant of the huge number of champ bags that will grant me far more than that ever would.
People are simply frustrated. The system isn’t broken or unjust or unfair. Blaming the system or the implementation of the system is the way people are choosing to express their frustration that they haven’t gotten in. It’s no different than people expressing frustration when they didn’t get in due to a random selection of people.

Its not all fair because it seems that theres a higher percentage chance that it drops for some people and not others, there might not be or it could just be “luck”, or it could be down to a MF mistake? But its been shown by some people trying for days/ and hours each day to get one and not getting one, and others getting some after a few minutes or getting several portals shows that its not totally fair, and cant all just be down to luck or bad luck.
got my portal when i was doing events in drytop
the queen skritt droped it
and i was not even farming for portal.
just wanted to finish the ambrite collection

It’s entirely an assumption that you think player X has a greater chance to get the item than player Y. I know someone who has 500% magic find and I got 5 and they still have zero. I also had a group with someone who got one on their 3rd event after just reinstalling the game for first time in 2 years in a group with someone who has been farming for days and she’s gotten none.
The only thing proven by all these stories is that it’s entirely random and everyone has the same random chance at it.
sigh
if someone looted 10000 beta portals that’s just one beta access and doesn’t hurt your chances at all.
ppl pls think.
Is this true? When the update came out and said they drop for a week “or more” I wondered if it meant that only so many can drop before they are pulled out of the loot table. Though that seems like poor hindsight on anet. It could be that it stops when the number of accounts get flagged. Or maybe it just means they hadn’t decided how long to let it drop. Point is, have they specified? I may have missed it.

Of course it’s not fair. Randomness is never fair, because it’s randomness. The only fair way to do it would have been to give one portal to every account in the game, but it was not possible for a CLOSED beta.
Randomness is supposed to be fair. However, there is reason to suspect that things might not be truly random.
I love how we have the same threads about the MF or anything random in this game. It’s RANDOM! There’s no scheme, no favored accounts, just RNG. Now you tell me: if you were to chose a small number of active players to get access to a beta, how would you proceed? You could give a way to get it for sure, but then you would have to get it at said hour to prevent too many players from getting it. A RNG drop is a way to be sure that the beta testers are active players, that’s all. You’re not entitled to a beta access. You were unlucky, shake it off.
Randomness is supposed to be fair. However, there is reason to suspect that things might not be truly random.
Yeah? What reason? You didn’t get one? That’s not a compelling argument.
When it comes to RNG. The six gods hate me. I have been running the Silverwastes everyday for hours to no avail. Seen people who have been there a lot less time. They got one. The RNG sucks. But nothing I can do about it. Just keep plugging away and hoping for the best.
Randomness is supposed to be fair. However, there is reason to suspect that things might not be truly random.
Yeah? What reason? You didn’t get one? That’s not a compelling argument.
I’m just making a point. I haven’t even attempted to get the portal stone. It has no interest to me other than the extra rewards beta players might get. Frankly, I find your accusations against me insulting. I suggest you get your facts right before your start attacking someone or just stop being so hostile in general.

You are not answering the question : what reason makes you suspect randomness is not really random in the game?
See all the threads on it. I’ve stated my opinion on the topic.
See all the threads on it. I’ve stated my opinion on the topic.
All the thread simply show that players like think they are ENTITLED to getting a portal drop. The ones who got are certainly not going to make a thread about it, only the losers who think they deserve it are making threads.

Case dismissed. You spoke through your hat when you pretended there was a reason to suspect randomness is not truly random in this game.
There is none in fact and you don’t want to admit it.
Random Number Generator is random. ..
..is the common answer. Frankly, it’s as incriminating as pleading the 5th but still, it doesn’t prove you did it but it makes others feel even stronger that you might have.
Basically, what I’m saying is it’s not very helpful, is of no comfort, and only makes people worry about the underlying code of the game more.
I farmed SW for the beta portal from the first moment on for 7 days.
Every day for many hours. And didn’t get the portal.
shrugs
Moving on.
That’s unfortunate. Hopefully, there will be more opportunities for those who still want to do the beta and haven’t had the chance. This could be just one of many opportunities before release. Hopefully, we don’t miss out on any more rewards because we didn’t participate in these betas.
PPS:
It’s not about you. It’s never been about you.
Yeah! It’s SO not about you that they had to give that one guy over there 5 of the expansion tester thingies that you didn’t get so that they’re SURE it’s not about you and SURE it’s about that one special dude with 5 portals knows that he’s OBLIGATED to enter that beta and not you!
Frankly, I don’t see the logic. Wouldn’t it be better to, at the very least, flag an account if they already have a portal if for no other reason than to make it look like your loot tables aren’t completely out of your control? Again, not about you, just about them not looking like they lack control over something people have been sorely suspicious about.
Well, that got long quick. Also completely off point. Yes, it sucks some people don’t have portals. That isn’t the point. The point is that people shouldn’t be able to get more than one. Yes, loot tables are the same for everyone. No, one person having a billion doesn’t reduce the number that everyone else gets. But it’s a negative impact on the majority of players who haven’t gotten portals. Like people have stated, no one who got a portal is going to complain. So why give everyone else a reason to feel discriminated against?
Wouldn’t it be better to, at the very least, flag an account if they already have a portal
Meaning they must add code, test it to make sure it does not affect other drops for those accounts. That’s a lot of work for only a beta test allocation. Much easier to add something to a drop table that is proven to work since 2 and a half year.
if for no other reason than to make it look like your loot tables aren’t completely out of your control?
They are working perfectly well. What would make me doubt about their loot table would be if no one dropped portals more than once on an account.
Around here we have a lottery. You have something like 1 chance on 14.000.000 to win the jackpot. The same guy won it twice. Quite frankly, someone dropping 5 portals is not even surprising me…
I think people mistake ‘random’ with ‘fair and even’. A random system is not fair and even. Crazy streaks happen under a random system. Everyone has the same base chance (disregarding MF), but that doesn’t mean you’ll be rewarded for the effort you’ve put in, since every roll on the table is unique and unaffected by the rolls that came before it, or time put in.
If anything, I feel people are upset because random is too random, meaning potentially unrewarding.
^a random system simple ensures everybody is treated equally. Yes the outcome is not always fair but that is the nature of randomness.
See all the threads on it. I’ve stated my opinion on the topic.

Of course it is my opinion, any statement not based on objective or provable statement is an opinion.
Thank you captain obvious.

A truly random system would be fair. That’s why it is usually preferred.

Well, loot code should already have modular code for stuff like this. The coder should have control of minute aspects of everything it does especially since it’s not decision influenced and all done via algorithm. Not discounting the amount of work involved, but compared to introducing new loot, coding what area it drops, how often it drops and whether it’s account limited should be about as easy as altering a number in a math problem, which can be tested, derived, solvable and followable backwards, forwards and through the middle by just looking at it.
Besides, the code already exists. There are items that you can only have one of in your inventory.
That all being said, I’m not trying to instill doubt in Anet or their game but I find it laughable that people can blindly believe things not presented to them squarely like a bunch of sheep. Just like I’d only believe that the RNG is borked once someone provides enough evidence to prove it outside of just me relying on their word, I can’t just accept that it’s IS working as they intended until they show me some statistics and documentation of what the game is actually doing.
Until then, I can only believe what I perceive.
I mean, if Anet told us all from the beginning that loot was distributed by GENIE and said nothing else, I’d want to see what they’re talking about and not just believe what they tell me.
Does anyone happen to know when the event is ending btw? I’ve been farming for 5 days with no luck.

Now, that would be unfair – if people who get into these betas get free, extra stuff on thier accounts, that people who missed out don’t get. But I don’t think that’s happening is it?

I’m a little confused by the above statement. The premise is this:
Starting tomorrow, April 28, heroes adventuring in the Maguuma Wastes have a chance to find a mysterious portal to the heart of the Maguuma Jungle. Looting one of these special trophy items grants you access to the next Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns™ PvE closed beta event!
For a limited time only, rare portals will drop from enemies in Dry Top and the Silverwastes. Portals can’t be traded between players, so bring your friends along to hunt for their very own! Don’t worry if your portal gets misplaced in a sandstorm or devoured by a passing ravager; beta access will be flagged upon looting the item, and it’s not required to claim participation.
Going by the above official statement, the drops are supposed to be random (by chance). If you have statistically significant data that proves otherwise, could you please present it? Otherwise your beliefs are just that, beliefs.
(edited by Pretty Pixie.8603)
A truly random system would be fair. That’s why it is usually preferred.
Then GW2 loot system is fair, since it is truly random.
In a truly random system for something hard to obtain, many will get nothing, some will get once and a few will get more than once. Which is exactly what we see so far.
If you have proofs it is not truly random, please post them here.

The opposite could always be claimed. But my beliefs aren’t in question because I’m not making any sort of claim one way or otherwise.
Yup, another portal complaining thread. That being said though, I’m not complaining about the RNG per se, more that the same person can get more than one portal. I’ve seen some people with three or more portals, while the number of complaints from everyone else just goes up and up. I have zero idea as to if there are a limited number of portals, but everyone having an equal chance even if they already have a portal just seems silly. Anyone else have thoughts on this (that isn’t “RNG is lame, I didn’t get mine yet”)?
Oh, and before someone says “It’s RNG, live with it”, I think doing this via RNG is a good thing. Just part of the execution seems flawed.
It’s not flawed, it’s just random luck.
Doesn’t matter how many portals someone gets, they still counts as one.
Randomness is supposed to be fair. However, there is reason to suspect that things might not be truly random.

So you have no interest in beta testing but you would have liked to have done it for any free goods. That’s the type of player they don’t want as beta testers, unfortunately there’s quite a few like that.
What’s this reason to suspect it’s unfair? I’ve seen no evidence of it and you are not providing any.
All players are using the same system, so even if there was a fault within the program, it would effect us all. So nobody is getting any special treatment.
I saw someone that linked 6 portals 2 days ago. lol

Which means they got 1 gold 50 silver if they decided to sell them to an NPC.
Portals don’t actually matter, they’re just a means to flag an account, which is why it doesn’t matter even if you lose them as the account has already been flagged.

What type of player is that exactly?
Is it wrong that I want a chance at getting a reward that interests me? I tried to apply to the first beta several times, but the system never registered me. I didn’t even have a chance. After reading about the beta experience and what it would take to get into the next beta, I decided that I would rather wait until the game was released and play it then. I never complained that I wasn’t able to participate. However, I later learned that players in the beta were rewarded with something that I did want. This was unfair and cruel.
Why does my interest in receiving the heroic chest make me open to verbal abuse and harassment?
The amount of bullying on this forum is ridiculous.

I know, I was just pointing out the mere curiosity of the chances of that happening.
How do you know that it is truly random?
The results so far appears to be consistent with what the drops should be for an item with a low drop rate.

People can only go by what you write.
All the MMOs I’ve played the companies have rewarded the beta tester in one way or another, I don’t see why you would think Anet would be any different.
So I just don’t see why you would begrudge them the chest. I didn’t get one either, but then I wasn’t a beta tester so I don’t expect to get one.
If you went for a job interview and you didn’t get the job would you still expect a salary from them, of course you wouldn’t.
As for what I was talking about in regard to beta testers, there are some that just want to check out the game (or expansion) so they can decide if to buy it or not. Others so that when its released they can get ahead quicker. Some (although probably a small minority) look for weaknesses within the program so they can exploit them. And of course you get some that just beta test to see what rewards they get. That’s not to say they can’t be a good beta tester as well as, well except the exploiters.
I think the way Anet have done it this time is actually not a bad way, the regions chosen were level 80s because they want beta testers that at least understand the game.
Also if someone wanted to be a beta tester they had to put some effort into it (majority would have had to anyway).
I don’t see any bullying on this forum, it seems like most forums but then I don’t read everything on this forum, although it does seem better than some.
People can only go by what you write.
What did I write that made you feel it was ok to publicly label me? If you’re looking for bullying, you needn’t look far.

Why does the fact that the RNG is random incriminate Anet? The truth is that you don’t want a uniformly random system (which will occasionally yield low-probability craziness like one guy getting 5 drops), you want a system that favors you by giving you what you want. Fairness isn’t people getting rewarded by the RNG when they think it’s appropriate, it’s having a uniform loot table that applies to every player.
Nobody has given any compelling reason (“low-probability outliers exist” is not compelling) to believe that the system systematically favors any individuals or groups.
It’s just QQ that they didn’t get what they want.

I would like to add my 5 cents worth here, and yes, it is frustrating not getting a portal, but the real issue here is the campers at base that do nothing (maybe go for supper/coffee/tea) who knows, while a handful of people grind to get the map ready. Once this happens as if my magic, the non moving players suddenly come alive and active and they ready for the chain, that’s my frustration, and in all fairness, if Anet are offering us a chance at a glimpse of Maguuma, then the drops should be higher for people doing the event from start to finish, that would be “polished” RNG. Don’t kill me, just my opinion.
