This may seem a bit weird to say. But I ask you bear with me and hang on till the end. If you have your own ideas on what you hope the fight to be. please speak up. I feel discussion can only improve the chances of a satisfying experience later on.

My post is specifically on the final mordremoth fight. Ever since the….lets call it the “Zhaitan Incident” ive been not so secretly worried that mordremoth might suffer the same fate.

Ive been trying to think of how the fight could be as intense as a dragon of such magnitude and nature deserves.

This is what I came up with.

The arena is the chamber that mordremoths massive core body sleeps in under the jungle. We breach into the side of the chamber and rush towards the currently prone dragon. A wave of mordrem greet us from the get go. The fight starts in full around the beasts feet. As npc mesmers begin to create portals while making use of the blink spell to climb the creatures legs. The mesmers must be defended along each jump as they hold the portals open for forces to climb to the top they are attacked mostly by mordrem vines which sprout from his body. this phase should last for 3-4 minutes. Forcing players to move from point to point shoring up the defenses. or risk the entire portal chain becoming undone. Resulting in failure.

As the majority of pact forces reach the top of mordremoths body the second phase begins. Charr mining crews breach the top of the chamber. And the drills fall to slam into the mordremoths back. They immediatly begin drilling through the surface of his body.

Mordremoth is enraged. He begins uprooting himself his entire body shaking and swaying. Players have to make sure they arnt knocked off while simultaneously defending the dirll teams along with the pact soldiers in order to breach the shell.

After a couple minutes of this. The outer shell is breached. Players enter modremoths body in different locations in search of the very organs used to store the magic that the elder dragons drain from the world. Upon finding them they attack them only to find them protected by the very engergies they contain. Players must strip the defenses (fill the break bar) in order to damage the organs all while defending themselves from mordremoths assault.

The players are evicted violently in various directions. Each one landing with very low health. They must recover there health and regroup as the next phase begins.

Mordremoth is crippled by the damage done to him. But hes still dangerous. Massive vines erupt around the players that they must avoid as the assault the beasts head and limbs. Forcing him to expell what energy he still has as he strives to crush the pests around him.

Pact soldiers attack from the side. Restricting his movements but there efforts are short lived. As they are destroyed and mordremoth becomes more desperate hi begins to claw at the players locations with his front limbs. And breathes swamps worth of poison and toxin in an attempt to keep the players back. Players continue to assault the massive vines as well as mordremoth himself. Draining him of his residual energy.

I have not really decided how the fight should end. As I can’t think of one that really captures the essence of how massive a beast such a dragon is. Or how powerful. Whether he burns off his energy in an attempt to take the player down. Or if mordremoths death itself lethal in the utmost. Or even something else entirely I have no ideas.

Any ideas form all of you?

I think mordremoth should be done as a dungeon. A new dungeon. I think it would simply work that much better if there are other people there. Perhaps about half an hour to get to mordremoth and then a half an hour boss fight. That would be epic

How does that make sense unless you have a zhaitan like fight??

I do agree with at least part of what was said here. I like the idea of the Portals and the climbing up the side of Mordremoth and fighting on its body. (Admittedly not so much the magic organ bit but that’s partially do to other things. The two things I felt the Zhaitan fight could have used was…well, those of you who’ve played Monster Hunter 3 will get this. During the Jhen Mohran fight, there were parts where it would come along side the ship, and you could jump onto its back and attack it by targeting “weak points”. That would have been an awesome aspect. Another thing which would have improved it, as a lot of people have suggested, is that when he fell we should have gone down after him to “finish the job”, which could have been a fight where he’s thrashing at you with tooth and claw/the occasional Risen while you attack its feat and at times attack its head.

For Mordremoth what I think would be a neat idea is that towards the end you could fight him from the front (as stated above and suggested by Shade) with claw and poison breath etc, but when you win that phase he’s not actually DEAD. Instead you have to travel inside Mordremoth through his maw and seek out his HEART where you have to fight tendrils, peel back layers of bark and such protecting his heart, and ultimately stab/damage it.

I envision an instance in which the party members choose to fight him at his roots, mid section, or atop his back – in keeping with the zones separations of roots, floor and canopy. If Mordremoth takes up all 3 layers of the zone he’ll be epicly large. Players attacking from the roots have mostly tendrils and roots to contend with in confined spaces, trying to cut off his connection to the forest. Players on the forest floor have to manage swarms of mordrem minions. Players in the canopy/on back have to balance gliding and landing on his back to DPS while not getting thrown off, and dodging poison clouds while in the air. All three sections of Mordremoth have to be hacked down within XX seconds of each other or else they all heal up to equal the section with the greatest health remaining.

Live, learn, level up.

I actually like the idea of incorporating the Glider into the back part, making masteries part of the experience (I tried to do the same with the bark encrusted heart.). Also I’ve noticed people keep mentioning poison, but we’re also getting a new Condition in the expansion! What if as you fight him he secrets some kinda sap which causes Slow?

I expect an end-game boss to use pretty much every condition in the book as part of his repertoire. I mentioned poison because it’s something that would be plausible to be in the air. But certainly slows and roots on the ground. Maybe not burning. Plants don’t do burning…

I wouldn’t have my hopes up. When Colin was asked (I think it was by AngryJoe), if we are going to fight and defeat Mordremoth, and will it not be as lacking as Zhaitan fight, he became extremely elusive, and did not answer specifically that question. Of course it would be EXTREMELY disappointing if we didn’t fight Mordy, but I get the hunch that we won’t, and the whole incident will be resolved with some Deus ex Machina tied to the story (if we’re lucky we’ll get a look at his corpse, or sth.)

Acid? Acid burns. Or possibly some sort of fluid which ignites on contact with the air. I will agree though that a bunch of conditions are likely to occur and that Burn is admittedly the least likely (although possible.). We’ll no doubt definitely see Poison, Torment, Slow, Immobilize, Blind, and Bleed. Confusions a little further down the line but possible.

I could see a form of acid. Or pools of more powerful toxins that act in much the same way to a body. My main thing atm is thinking about what is often used by mordrem at this time. Poison,Cripples,Immobs and long lasting area denial fields (the “thorns” mordrem leave behind)

Another thought I’d has was, what if instead of the drilling/organ thing on his back we were instead planting explosives/incendiary devices on his back? (Granted we could be planting these just below the skin/hide as well.).

What if the final boss battle in Heart of Thorns is a fast paced raid-like jumping puzzle dungeon WvW fight?

Actually I think the opposite is true. When Joe asked about the Mordy fight in comparison to Zhaitan Colin responded, in an indirect way yes, with a yea we know we dropped the ball on that one. All he could say about the Z fight was that it “looked cool”. They are aware of the mistake made with the first dragon and are going to improve on it. To be honest I doubt he will mention anything about how the Mordy fight will play though. They were pretty quite about Zhaitan as well. In fact I don’t think we got any real info about Zhaitan until after people started fighting him.
