I don’t want to kill the brainstorming….. but, there are no new weapon types being added in Heart of Thorns. Though, specializations will allow professions to use existing weapon types which they currently cannot use.

Awwwww Why no love for the paragon and the dervish!!! T.T been wanting to have scythes and spears forever now! Since the game was announced while i was playing Gw1 as a E/P

The pvp community reminds me of what Obi-kittenenobi describes Mos Eisley as from star wars.

I think it’s worth clearing up the “Spears as land weapons” discussion for a few reasons. “No new weapon types” wouldn’t technically eliminate land spears on a class. Also, in the trailer at the end of S2, a Sylvari impales someone on a spear, on land. It’s gonna stink for players hoping to get land spears and they wouldn’t be wrong to get excited for them after seeing the reasons I left above. If you don’t comment, I will figure land spears will be a thing that you guys want to surprise us with. If you do comment, I will figure it’s to dispel the land spear myth, which would be a good thing. No one wants to get hyped about something that isn’t making its way into the game.

Please stop reading as you want to read and put it into the context of what’s said:

-NO NEW WEAPONS/TYPES IN THE EXPANSION!

This means that an of the water weapons will remain water weapons as that is their type. There are no animations for those weapons to be used on land for any of the game’s races, so it’s logical to know that the developers aren’t redesigning the weapon’s mechanics, animations and skills to make them land; because that’s basically making a whole new weapon.

And an impaling spike is not the same as a spear. It’s a spike or stake. A spear is a more nimble weapon compared that is not meant to support a body’s weight in suspension for display. Just the same these large stakes were not used as weapons, but as both torture devices and means of displaying acts against enemies to instill fear onto the people. The same kind of methods are used in smaller scale on castle keeps with just spiking the heads of traitors (see Ned Stark of Game of Thrones). But still not the weapon of combat or execution.

This is a true statement about anet and their radio silence. I am becoming more and more excited to see who will be right about HOT; the naysayers or the optimists.

on topic though… I was checking out weapon and armor sets for a reverent and I am more and more saddened by the thought of using staves as melee and not spears. Almost none of the staves look cool as a melee weapon and all of the spears look sweet (eexcept the legendary spear for some reason… it kinda looks more like a spear gun or something). Preview the arah dungeon spear. You can’t tell me all your melee staff dreams dont come true. Then equip the legend and feel your dreams snap in half. Not unlike how that glassy green ball would snap from the staff after you whacked someone with it.

The melee polearm you saw the Revenant use is actually a melee-attack Staff.

Now you’ve got a forum specialist title, could you please be more careful about stating unconfirmed speculation (unless you can provide a reference) as fact? Because otherwise people might think you’re in a position of authority to know this to be a fact.

Personally, it looks more like a hammer to me, including using hammer animations and having roughly the length of a hammer on a charr. It just has a more realistically sized head than those currently ingame.

To those who think Scarlet hate means she’s succeeded as a villain:
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.

It is good you came into the post, and something the team at Anet may want to consider doing more often on the forums. Reining in expectations about the areas you aren’t focusing on will keep the excitement level higher for those areas you are focusing on with HOT – and will give players the feeling that you are listening to them.

Just dont come back once Black Desert fail like Wildstar, Archeage, ESO etc. While graphic and features looks interesing i fear its going to be another failure – considering the fact alone that theres open world pvp gang, losing exp by getting killed in pvp, soft lv cap means you can continue to lv up (50 cap) to gain advantage in pvp etc and huge grind. Nty

Mm lol it’s already p2w and ruined lol. Being an old C9 player and fan of Vindictus, they are making the same mistakes and reducing pvp potential. C9>Vind.>BDO and C9 was their first mmo, I’m waiting for other games imo .

You kinda need to consider the effort it would take to create new weapons, lets go over a few things.

First; The Skills:
Including a new weapon means the developers have to create a whole heap of new skills, and traits, among other things. They also need to consider the potential balance issues, what professions get them, and what would they actually bring to the class that they don’t have already? it;s all difficult work

Second; The Models.
Creating a new weapon means that every single set of skins would need more work, think about the sheer amount of weapon sets in the game, that’s a lot, and I mean A LOT! They would have to work their butts off making a new addition to each and every weapon set.

Third; Crafting.
Not only does it mean that there would need to be revisions to weapon sets, but there would also need to be a heap of new recipes in order to craft these weapons, as well as the items needed to assemble a potential Legendary. Revising all the weapon crafting tables is gonna take time too.

Fourth; Animating.
When you have a new weapon, guess what? you need new animations. Sure, some could be recycled from other weapons, it;s not uncommon, but not all of them, and animation isn’t easy, neither are particle affects and alignment. All time consuming.

Fifth; Integration.
Even if they managed to do all of the above, they would have to mess with the drop and loot systems, create statistics and it would take quite some time for the trading post to balance out what’s what. What’s the value of items? how rare are they? players wont know! it’s all unknowable.

I hope these five points help educate you why you can’t just expect things to happen overnight, because Arenanet simply don’t have the capacity to work on these kinda things just yet. They haven’t ruled out the possibility, but you really can’t expect that during all the time working on living story, and the expansion, and the constant updates that they would actually have the TIME to do something this difficult?

By all means, leave, go to whatever game you want, if you wanna leave this one because you can’t get what you want then there’s the door, please, see yourself out.

I can’t stop laughing at this, it failed and is p2w,it already started acting like C9 and Vindictus,great at start then a down hill race it was better in CBT2 OBT killed it but nah some are like:“Pretty graphics, pretty classes give me give me”.

Check forums,reviews and rank in Korea. Many would say GW2 offers a bigger challenge lol only hope is if NA/EU gets different server version then Korea. If not C9 all over again.

I think 2-handed axes would be a nice bit of eye candy. I’m sure anet can think of a few ways to make it a useful weapon as well.

For the people that say they can’t see the staff as a melee weapon because it’s a magical weapon, Ii think you should keep more of an open mind for weapons.

Polearms, javelins and spears would be the ‘easier’ ones to add since theres many harpoon skins that already look like that.

I would go with that for the next expansion in another 2 years. Heh.

It was mentioned some time ago by Anet that they would almost certainly let other professions use some of the already avaliable weapons, rather than create new ones, tho they should create new ones at some point. So that’s it, if they keep faithfull to that thought, they are giving the first step..give them some time until they really start thinking about new weaps.

I wouldn’t expect a new weapon type for a while. If anything, and I wouldn’t mind this, they may eventually allow some water types to be used on land (namely spears and maybe tridents???)

The reason being is there are already a vast amount of untapped options for each class. A new weapon wouldn’t just be a new set of skills for a few classes, which would already be a lot, but they’d have to create new skins 1-80, different rarities and uniqueness and for the various special skins. It’s just an unreasonable task, though it would be fun to toy with, its a lot of resources better used in other ways I think.

That said, I’d love for Spears and Tridents to make it to land.

Know this is a little bit late and I’m sorry for the bump but I didn’t see an earlier one so figured I’d comment here lol. (Again sorry I’m a little new to the forums side of GW2 dun yell at meh X3)
I’ve noticed a lot of people going with more traditional weapons such as great axe or crossbow or reforming the spear to be an aboveground weapon. While I’d love to see these as well I haven’t really seen much else variety wise other than this as far as suggestions. And while yes I know these will probably never be brought into the game I still think it would be a cool feature lol. X3
1.) Whip- In the sylvari storyline there is a brief chance to grab a whip and lay out some damage as part of the story and honestly, it was fun to play with lol. I know it could be hard to think of a lot of skins and animations for this but I think it could be a cool add in, maybe as an off hand if not full, and would love to see something like this.
2.) Chains- Yes I know this sounds broad but there’s a reason for this, there’s so many opportunities with chain weapons! Theres everything from the classing spiked ball and chain to the sickle and chain or even a bolas. I could easily see it being a medium ranged weapon or close ranged, whether it be a Mesmer manipulating it to snake out and strike its foe or a warrior swinging it in an arc knocking back all foes in range I think this could be another fun addition.
3.) My last idea, the classic yet tragically underused Tiger Claws. For obvious reasons these could be a close ranged weapon and I could easily see these strapped onto a thief. Maybe for spellcaster classes you could develop some kind of long range ability, similar in the way necromancers shoot out claw animations with some of their skills. One of the harder weapons to make significant in game yet felt like I’d mention it regardless.

I’m just getting a little annoyed at fantasy styled games not having proper spear options, when spears are historically one of the most commonly used weapons across all eras and regions. In games though? They almost don’t exist (unless we’re talking dynasty warriors or something, as there’s like 8 characters that have pole-arms spears or other things that resemble them) just gets on my nerves.

IF they were to include new weapons with HoT (Wich they will NOT) I would prefer something that is not similar to things that are already present in the game. I mean, something REALLY different.

I like spears and polearms in general, but I don’t see them as a great addition. They are just another standard melee weapon.

I would rather like to see a chain weapon, like the Meteor Hammer and the Kusarigama; or a true throwing weapon like the Boomerang or the Kpinga.

Anyway… its not going to happen.

Just make sure to hand off all your stuff to other players so it doesn’t go to waste.

Are you not locked to a single weapon set in Black Desert? I could never get into any of those Korean type games. I felt as though there were no real choices to be had in weapons… kinda some choices with skins… but not really.

Back to OP. I know a lot of people want 2 handed axes for whatever reason, which is fine with me but a lot of people question what role a weapon like that would fill that either a hammer or great sword doesn’t already fill. I also hear people complain that there are too many great sword users in the game. What if moving forward whenever a profession get a new specialization which would be a fit for a great sword or hammer they gave them a great axe instead? Win/Win? Also you don’t have to go back and make up a bunch of axe skins for previous weapon sets. you could be choosy and just make new skins for craft able or racial sets.

ps. I could care less about axe skins or monk gloves or bow staffs or cross bows or bear bows. I just think maybe there is some sense in adding new weapons. Plus I’m a child of divorce and try please everyone and stop any and all fight

I don’t want to kill the brainstorming….. but, there are no new weapon types being added in Heart of Thorns. Though, specializations will allow professions to use existing weapon types which they currently cannot use.

While I understand that creating new weapon types takes time away from more important things and its goes against the NPE, I’d like to raise some concern.

A lot of people saw the revenant meleeing a mob with a staff. While staves have been used in real life for centuries as a melee weapon, the staff design in GW2 (which was tailored to spellcasters) make them very clunky and weird as melee weapons. Seriously, that attack rytlock was performing in the HoT announcement trailer would have looked ridiculous with an ascended staff, or even a wintersday staff. Spears, though they are underwater wepons seem much more tailored to melee attacks.

What could be done is to create a new category of weapons (say “pikes”) and copy paste most of the spear models in this category. Spears remain UW weapons while pikes are terrestrial weapons. It’s not like half of the tridents are copies of staves anyways, so I do not see a problem here.

I totally agree with you on this.
i guess they wanted melee Scythe niche on Revenants to mimic the Dervish class, but didnt want to use that exact staff scythe skins we currently have, in the trailer. Smh.

Wanna brainstorm about weapons that are not in GW1 ? Here are a few trails you can start investigating :

  • Pole weapons : i.e melee weapons with a longer reach → Main problem : balancing this vs 600 range distance weapons and classic melee weapons. Ideas are welcomed
  • Other 2handed weapons : greataxes are a good candidate. Now ask yourslef, what niche could the greataxe fill that is not already covered by an existing weapon right now. Sword (or axe for the warrior) is the usual cookie cutter direct damage melee weapon. Greatsword is the usual damage+mobility melee weapon and warhammer fill the CC niche. → Rangers could get greataxes as a melee+mobility condition damage weapon if you can balance it vs the shortbow. Thoughts ?
  • double weapons (see this if you don’t know what they are ) → Again, tell what can they do other weapons can’t ?

In the end, it’s not about designing new wepons, it’s about finding new uses for them in the first place.

About my gripe with staves as melee weapons :

I’ll just remind the devs that you don’t even need to change the attack animations by using pikes instead of staves, since a staff (in real life) is just a pike without the metallic head. What you can do with a pike you can do it with a staff.

In GW2, staves are designed as sticks with a somewhat large head at the top. Spears are sticks with a pointy metallic head at the top. Switching from one to an other should be possible.

To be honest I can understand some people want Greataxes and spears and everything and I have no problem with that I just feel like it really doesn’t provide any real change or variety based on what we already have. That’s why I supported the whole new weapon bases above such as tiger claws (which I admit are similar to daggers in a way), whips, and chain weapons. It wouldn’t be hard to find new skills for these, they’ve already made some whip skills in the sylvari storyline and with a little imagination one could easily come up with a cool group of skills for any of these.

People keep saying this, while comparing weapons to real life.

In the game, weapons function totally uniquely. They give characters skills for 1-5. A Mesmer for example doesn’t use the same skills with a Greatsword that a Guardian/Necro uses.

They are different.

New weapons, just like other weapons will have their own skills, that make their playstyles unique.

Ask yourself, what will make the Revenant’s Melee staff skills unique and to what niche, as you described?

See now what that’s not important? Weapons change he way we play because they provide skills we use. Not how we swing the weapon…
