No new race? Disappointing.
for class you mean race right? No new race sadly
Would have loved if Kodan was playable. But ohh well what can we do.

the best way for them to introduce a new race or two would be to start a whole new personal story, and it would have to make sense for them to have that story and to be there as well. (say, tengu becomes a playable race if cantha is made available – they would be struggling to reclaim their homeland. makes sense to have a personal story there.)
otherwise they don’t bring much to the table, as stated in several interviews.
It is a little disappointing we didn’t get a new race, but I understand and accept that Anet did not feel this was an option just yet. But who knows, they may add one in the future.
If the revenant is the last profession (which is logical to me) its possible with next expansion(s) in 2057 we’ll get new race.
So you saying new race with max 3 elite skills would be better instead of new proffesion with a lot of new stuff? kitten logic, right?
Maybe for him it’s better. Who are you to judge?
The more I think about it, races other than exposure to lore and culture don’t seem to add anything new as opposed to a new class. Not that I’m saying new races shouldn’t be added, but I just think they are best added to an expansion where it makes sense for them to be on. For instance, if people want Kodan, they’d probably be in an expansion dedicated to Jormag.
to be honest, I understand their opinion… it wouldn’t be worth it to add new race because it would be too much work for too little reward… all the armors, main city, starting zone, personal story… and in the end it wouldn’t add as much gameplay compared to all the effort…
Personally, I think the only time we will get a new race is if we get a new campaign. For example, if we ever get a Cantha campaign. We will then get a new continent, new starting zone and new personal story, and quite possibly a new race or two as well.
Whether/when we get a new campaign is anyones guess, but I do not see us getting new races in expansions.
I feel we’ll see tengu one day, maybe with primordus going active on surface
Seriously? Again? This topic has been beaten to death over and over.

commentary is hilarious! But seriously, I don’t know that new race really makes that huge of a difference. It would be fun to see where arenanet would go with it… would have to get a few more character slots to accommodate this. I do like the new profession and CANT WAIT TO PLAY! I was hoping to be a part of beta testing… but alas that is not to be

Yeah, you should never do something to please your consumers. It’s not like it matters if they’ve been asking for it since release or anything, they should just be happy to get more outfits to spend real money on.

Who on earth asked for a new race at release?! I know some people can be impatience but that takes the cake.
As to never doing something to please the customer, maybe you need to rephrase that to “Never doing something to please me.”, because if they never did anything to please the customer they would not have lasted more than a year tops. They are doing a lot to please their customers and I see plenty of evidence that they are listening to us and adding things many of us requested.
Their priority list may not be the same as yours, but that doesn’t mean they are no giving the customers what they want.
Also, giving the customer exactly what they want is not always beneficial to the game as a whole. The customer is not ALWAYS right, despite popular belief. I am not saying adding a new race would have been bad, but if it a race was added instead of something better, then it would be. They need to prioritize what would be more beneficial for the game and the majority of the players. A profession is a far better choice than a race in my opinion, and if time and resources dictated one or the other I would rather they chose profession.

Hi,
You must be new here.
People have been asking for new races pretty much since release. Why? Because we’ve been introduced to new races throughout the game. Grawl, Skritt, Kodan, Largos, etc. etc.
I mean, yeah, I see where you’re coming from, but don’t bury your head in the sand. People want new races for many different reasons, one of which might just be they LIKE said race and want to play as one. Is that somehow selfish or impatient?
If anything, I’m probably way more patient than a lot of players you’ll meet. When Revenant shows up, I’m not going to make one not because I’m boycotting or bitter, I’d just rather make one using a race I like or feel best suits the type of character I’d want my Revenant to be.
I’ve done the same with Necromancer and stopped progress on my Guardian until something is introduced to want one. I think a Tengu Necromancer would be perfect for me.
OP,
I’m also disappointed but then I also understand the devs likely aren’t taking the possibility off the table. They don’t even need an expansion for it. They could turn a Living Story sized team into a group aimed to build the story for Tengu. The main thing they’d need is making customization options for them (they could use a slight derivative of the Charr model for their armor) and animations.
Would have loved if Kodan was playable. But ohh well what can we do.
Complain on the forums?
Don’t you want to leave some material for another xpac? And besides I’m not sure if any new races would’ve made sense the way the Living World Season 2 played out.
They won’t do new races, because they would have to do new personal stories, which they have said repeatedly they regret even doing in the first place. The amount of content in the personal story (5 races x (3 backgrounds + 3 campaigns + 3 order specific sets)) is far, far more than any player gets to experience.
Even with 9 lvl 80s there are personal story missions I have not even seen.
For some this is great, for me I loved having a different story for every character. For the development it means that 90% of the playerbase has only experienced a teeny, tiny fraction of the content that was developed for the personal story. AND they complain, a lot, about how little content the personal story has.
So I can understand their regret, and a desire not to repeat that again with a whole new race.
I would be happy enough, I think, if they expanded the combat tonics to include more than just TWO options, and do away with the kitten debuff that makes one of those so usesless you never ever see it in game.
Pop a combat tonic, play as a Kodan, or a Largos, or a Tengu. Make them gem shop items even, I wouldn’t care. It would be a lot better than a hundred thousand black wings on the screen. And they wouldn’t have to rebuild every single armor set. Though they would have to make new animations for some, like the Kodan. Largos could probably get away with the human animations, just like AC potion and Clockwork potion.

It’s almost like Tengu was already in the works as a playable race prior to release and people were expecting to get it. Madness, I know.
New race is a waste of effort because work=/=gameplay. You need to do new story , make all armors for them , animations etc just for other looks…

Hmm, it’s like people don’t like their work. It’s one thing to justify why the devs haven’t implemented additional races into the game, but it’s a totally different thing to label said work as “a waste of effort”.
A-net does a spectacular job at making a race feel like a whole different species. Is this somehow a waste? Should they have just tossed Asura, Sylvari and Charr in the trash and stuck with Humans for their game?
I honestly don’t get it.
I meant to say that i would rather want them to make some replayable content in this span of time instead new race.
This is one way to look at it…
A new race would mean a helluva lot of work for nothing more than a new model for you to decorate with no effect on the game.
Sure you get a few racial skills which no one will use and a different personal story, but you’ll be bringing nothing new to the table in the grand scheme of things.
At this point there needs to be a reason for an additional race. Also I’m not sure how they’d handle things like Destiny’s Edge if they decided to add a new race. Unless they write the Living World such that a new playable race would be required I wouldn’t be surprised if they never added one.

Yeah, I’m sure we’ve heard it all before. Thanks for repeating it.
Now, have you tried looking at it from one of the other possible ways of looking at it?

Sounds like an opportunity to get creative to me.

I have nothing against a new playable race for a future xpac, but not this one. The current state of Living World doesn’t warrant a new playable race, so adding one for the sake of adding one doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
Just a thought, but maybe Anet wanted to get profession specializations and the Revenant out before implementing new races and animations for the specializations/Revenant.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we did see new races in future xpacs.

No company that wants to survive doesn’t do so by pleasing the customer. In your specific case you are under the mistaken belief that your opinion represents the majority.
I also want to add that a lot of companies are beginning to realize that trying to make everyone happy is a bad idea and it is better to focus on getting one customers than it is to keep terrible disgruntle consumers such as yourself.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.
A new race would be nice. I was expecting a new race. But I would have preferred a new profession over a new race, and I feel excited that we are getting a new profession instead.

I too was expecting a new race in the xpac since release. A new race is fun and exciting and definitely brings something new to the game. I feel like a new race would’ve completed the feel of the expansion. Although I will still purchase it, it is a bit of a letdown knowing we’ll have to wait another several years before we Might get a new playable race.
Honestly, I would like to see “Expansion Races” sold in the gem store that don’t have access to the personal story, don’t sweat having a low level zone, and don’t bog down in a bunch of lore. Just straight up “here it is. you can play them now” without all the stuff that would make them take months/years to set up. Its already a huge effort just to record the various skill sounds, shouts, and grunts in all the languages the game supports.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

That actually puts into words what I was thinking when I was at PAX South and sitting in the 2nd row. Yeah, it’s an expansion and I’m still hyped about all the new stuff but it just feels like HoT is sort of just a couple steps from feeling like a BIG or FIRST! expansion. Granted, they still haven’t announced everything we’ll get, knowing it won’t have a new race still leaves it shy of that big/first expansion feel we should get.
As far as the comments about not fitting into the story of HoT, you guys do realize the devs create the story. They could make a race fit into the story because it’s their story :-P So long as it’s not a race we’ve never seen or heard about, I’m not understanding how it is impossible to fit.
i prefer largos. we should have playable underwater race to add in. now the underwater legendary weapon is waste
skrit rule!!!!!
tengu are amazing and if they ever add them they will be my exclusive race, i will just have to remove all my characters and start over :P ( jking about the remove all characters part) and largos would be really fun to play
For all you folks telling us all how stupid we are for wanting a new playable race “that brings nothing to the table gameplay-wise”…
That was the stance ArenaNet took in GW1, and it was one of the biggest complaints about the game. Enough so that 1x race in GW1 – lousy stinkin’ humans – was multipled by five into the current playable spread in GW2 despite different playable races “bringing nothing to the table gameplay-wise”.
People want different things. Some folks are content just rolling the same randomized-features human every time the run a new character because they don’t give a snot how they look or what their character is, they just care what the skillbar says. Players who call their characters ‘toons’ and can’t be bothered to pay attention to any of the in-game lore beyond what minimum is required to get their heads around the game mechanics because they’re here to play, not read fruity storybook background fluff.
You guys have gotten yours. It’s our turn.
Some folk have been pining for Tengu since before release, and have been waiting and waiting and waiting for ArenaNet to introduce the Living Story steps required to bring the Tengu into the war. Want to make them a prestige race, unlocked by a level 80 character completing the Living Story steps to create them rather than having them start the same way as the others because ArenaNet regrets their personal story? GREAT! Sounds like a fantastic plan! Make it happen ArenaNet, we’ll get right on unlocking those birdmen! Heck, that makes perfect sense to me – the Tengu send a cadre of their elite warriors to assist against the Elder Dragons after some great disaster befalls the Dominion of Winds and forces the Tengu people to finally set aside their neutrality. Cadres of elite warriors sure as shootin’ don’t start at level 1 in half a set of whites.
Create a Prestige Character Creator system which starts your Tengu at level 80 of its chosen profession, with a set of skill and trait unlocks to put together a build, and in a set of soulbound, unsalvageable exotic armor in a stat set determined by a choice made during character creation, and then that Tengu’s ‘tutorial mission’ is a shortish instance where you see the Tengu and his squad of fellow birdmen emerge from the Dominion of Winds into the wider world to deal with some manner of dragon lieutenant or other before showing up in front of Trahernea and saying “Yo. We’re here. Where do you need things dead?”
Beginning, and end, of Tengu personal story.
How awesome would that be, huh?

Again dis topic? Pls.
I’d take new classes/spec any day.
If this would come in the future i’m more than happy but there are many more things to focus on now instead of basically 0 addition to the gameplay.

I’d take new classes/spec any day.
I would take new classes/spec AND race over that any day.
I don’t recall where anyone specified this was an either or choice.

Oh well surelly it’s not per se, but when you have limited time and resources you make choices and classes/specs over essentially cosmetic/lore is the smartest and more rewarding solution. I say it again, i would be more than happy, but not if we sacrifice gameplay content.
Wat r u, casul?
Sorry, in my opinion a new race brings very little to the table.
Professions and specializations (and to a lesser degree masteries) are where it’s at for me.

It brings customization. In a game that primarily makes money selling cosmetic items, I would think more customization would be welcomed by the players.
Sure, I was disappointed. There is enough other stuff in HoT that I definitely am not writing it off though – we’ll hopefully get a better game, and can figure out the race stuff later.
Though I do still agree it needs to be later. I don’t know if it was Colin’s intention, but he seems to have accidentally brainwashed a legion of people into thinking that races are pointless, when… hey, there’s an awful lot of stuff in the gem store that is purely cosmetic – not even lore – and they still make it, right? Nike and the poster I’m quoting below already identified how you would avoid the PS problem.

Right, and I don’t remember anyone saying we should sacrifice anything.
Also, new races IS ALSO gameplay content. And as far as cash goes, I think Anet could make a lot of money off of a new race. If not from additional character slot purchases, make-over kits would likely be a good selling point along with other cosmetic gemstore purchases.

Who is disappointed that we didn’t get a new race to play? I always thought that when there was going to be an expansion we would have at least gotten 1 new race to play as (Tengu what I was hoping for) because usually that’s what expansions bring is a new race or two. Instead we just get a new… profession. Mind you, for races that’s been around since day 1. Well, that’s fine but still I’m disappointed there is no new race especially after 2 years.
EDIT: I meant race
This is not warcraft where each new expansion there is a new race.

Yes because WoW is the only game that releases new races like that. . .
