Free character slot
If you registered your core Guild Wars 2 game before January 23, 2015 and register a pre-purchase serial code for Heart of Thorns any time before the expansion is released, you’ll receive a free character slot! Once you apply a pre-purchase serial code, you’ll be eligible for the slot regardless of where you bought the core game.

If the serial code you used to register the core game came from a retail vendor (rather than buy.guildwars2.com or in-game) and was applied to your account between January 23, 2015 and June 16, 2015, you’ll also be eligible for a free character slot if you apply a Heart of Thorns pre-purchase serial code before the expansion release.

All accounts that become eligible by July 9 will have their free character slot applied by July 10. Eligible accounts that are upgraded with a pre-purchase serial code after July 10 will receive their slots on a weekly basis after that.

So veteran players get their free slot.

Deluxe and Ultimate get another extra slot (which you should already have if you prepurchased)

I am having a little confusion with the wording of this section.

So my question is I purchased GW2 Digital Deluxe from Gamestop Online is May, 2015; if I where to pre-purchase Heart of Thorns Deluxe or Ultimate, I would receive two free character slots?

I am just curious if anyone could shine some light on this. I believe the answer is true but I may not understand what exactly is being offered.

game came with 8 professions and only 5 character slots, one for each race. Your example also doesn’t match. A better example would be you got your existing car new engines, a new paint job and new aircon, then complain that the mechanic didn’t add in an extra seat so you can fit in an extra person in your car.

Meaning: You won’t even get a code to create a second/farming mats account.
But if you want to play the xpac with a lvl 1 character and 0g to recieve the whole package, I guess it’s still a good deal..?

Not all veteran players get a character slot, at this time it’s only prepurchasers of the Heart of Thorns expansion. Basic gets one slot, Deluxe and Ultimate get 2 slots. Basic, Deluxe and Ultimate also get a beta slot that will only be useable during betas and probably only to make a Revenant.

ANet is based in the U.S. on the West Coast so all times they mention are always Pacific Time and Dates.

As usual, by ArenaNet’s timezone (PDT), I would think.

I believe a veteran player is anyone who got the core game prior to January 23rd of this year. So as beta players, we will both get the additional slot.

I would be more excited about this information if it weren’t for the fact that I STILL can’t prepurchase a hard copy yet. The only supposed retail partner they list for hard copies in the US is Gamestop, but it’s only listed for digital download on their website.

I really hope they fix that soon.

Anet’s original plan when it was announced people who already owned the game would get a free character slot was to make it available at or after the release of HOT.

So this announcement is a vast change and welcomed one if you ask me.

New player pre-purchase = HoT access and 5 character slots (6 with Deluxe and Ultimate)

Vet player pre-purchase = HoT access and 1 additional character slot (2 with Deluxe and Ultimate)

Veteran player is defined as any account that was activated before January 23, 2015. Any account purchased from the web store between January 23, 2015 and June 16, 2015 has been given the chance to request an upgrade to HoT with the orginal purchase price discounted from the current pre-purchase price or a deactivation and refund.

Games purchased from a third party vendor and activated within the January 23, 2015 and June 16, 2015 timeframe are eligible for Veteran Player status as defined above.

I did the pre buy (I have the code of the expansion) and are now a veteran of the game and I have not received anything new slot, no emails to play the beta .. I do not understand anything.

I’m not understanding you. Which people are you referring to that get the core game for free but don’t get the character slot? If you buy the expansion you’ll get at least one character slot. If you buy the Deluxe and Ultimate, you’ll get 2. All 3 (Basic, Deluxe, Ultimate) will also get a beta slot.

I got my extra character slot after I logged in for the second time since the start of the beta weekend event. So if you don’t have it already you could always see if that also works for you

If I buy the expac after its released (and others have reviewed it & found it worth the money), I cannot create a revenant, a mjor piece of the expac, because I am expected to use a character slot I’ve already paid for. ie: I would need to delete one of my chars or pay the extra hidden cost.

You are assuming that the purchases afterwards do not have a char slot. You have no proof of that. They only said the prepurchase would have a free char slot. They said nothing about whether or not there would be paid for char slots or the prices of the expacks.

They could if they wanted, drop the price of the basic expack to $40 and then add a $10 char slot and still be keeping within the agreement of the prepurchase.

I assume you are talking then about people who buy after the expansion is released? If so, you don’t know that. The prepurchase agreement only said It would come with a free char slot. It never said there wouldn’t be a char slot bundled in the post expansion sales that they wouldn’t charge for. All they have to do is charge 1 penny, and they are covered by the agreement that says they will only give away a free slot now.

It’s not unlikely they will discount the expansion after release, say to $40, and bundle in a $10 char slot, to make it $50 (with a paid for char slot included)

Edit: I think I see what you are saying, that if new players buy the expansion now it doesn’t come with the free char slot. That’s possible, it’s hard to tell from the way they phrased it.

Read the post and had to go looking… extra slot was there hiding until I scrolled the character list. (and I don’t plan to add a Rev in it… hope the terrain maps are worth the price of HoT… the character surely is not… yet)
