Still quite a bit upset. here is a few reasons why:
1. Anyone who just recently bought a deluxe edition or higher now has a less of a value for their money. Expecting plenty of others to agree with this. Can’t you guys just admit ya gone and goofed the different packages?Actually those who buy a Deluxe Edition or higher will have TWO additional characters slots added to their account instead of just one now.
Please read my post.
2 isn’t really a great thing. Especially when only 1 class is coming out.Oh, cut the carping. Be glad ANet did something, instead of whining about how it wasn’t exactly what you wanted. Some people will find fault in anything, I swear.
Are you kidding me? I just paid 100$ and one of the defining features was “Additional character slot”. Now I get another, redundant one? For what? That hidden second profession they haven’t revealed yet? As i said in my original post, I’m super glad they did this, I am. But I think it could be done BETTER with a benefit to everyone, not just to the 50$ pack which I outline in my original post so go read that then come use poor quotes and QQ on me more.
Not at all, BolkovonHarnfeldt. A-Net had good intentions, but horribly mishandled the rollout. they quickly fixed their mistake, and they should be recognized for that. Whether you spend the money is up to you, but I now feel that the price they’re asking is fair. I just paid it.
How do you know they had good intentions
It’s good for you that you think the price is fair, I don’t.
I don’t think the current deal is fair, because it transfers all the risk of the rollout from the company (who has to recuperate their investments they made beforehand) to the customer (who not only buys something unseen but also hands out free credit in the process.

Contact customer service. I’m sure they’ll be glad to downgrade your edition to basic and refund the difference. Somehow, I’m betting you won’t though.
You still don’t address the scammy 45E you decided for this dlc, and you still are silent or extremely vague about the amount/content in there. Stop try to scam us and at least put the dlc on open beta for those that have already buyed it. Why are you so ashamed about your work ?
Daddy still wont buy you the game? Aww.
The struggle is real.
Many thanks to Gaile and the team! Some just don’t know how to appreciate something at all.
How can you poke fun at him with such a name and a bratty comment, lmao. Props for your daddy for buying it for you though!
I planned on buying the Ultimate version from the night the were released. I just have to wait for payday.
That ANet is now including a second slot is a nice bonus, but in no way has influenced my choice on buying the Ultimate version.
From the beginning I have always planned on the Ultimate.
I covet the “shinies” it comes with. I already have plans for the 4000 gems, for the node packs so they will deliver use over time versus a “flashbang” feeling. I have an extra slot ope currently, this will give me a total of 3 open slots. I can chose to fill the other 2 or not as I see fit (one will be a Rev!)
I feel the content show thus far is enough, for me, to warrant a purchase. The extras are for me. Period. I am happy to pre-purchase and support ANet and at the same time take advantage of the great “fluff” items that make me feel happy inside.
Thank you ANet for the options given.
Thank you ANet for the expansion given.
Happy day!
Same, just waiting for payday. Yeah I am also all about those shinies and fashion wars 2.

It’s your money, and I won’t try to convince you to trust A-Net or expect a good value for it. 10 years of the GW franchise delivering good value is enough for me. I’m in, but I won’t criticize you for waiting or not buying it at all.
You know if you don’t buy the ultimate and instead buy two copies of hot you will have 6 new character slots AND two accounts for daily log in rewards. 2 months of that and you’ll have your 4k worth of gems in gold. The rest after 2 months is all profit.
A lot of the vets seem happy with this change, and I’m glad they are happy now too. That said I’m still not going to pre-purchase. I just can’t afford to drop that on the game any time soon, and I already had a open character slot waiting for something like this, so that new bonus doesn’t really speak to me.
I still don’t think the expansion has enough to warrant that price. I hope there is a lot more to it than what we’ve seen.
It’s nice that they are including a character though.
Keep in mind that you are not just paying for your access to HoT content, but also all the “free” content following HoT’s release. Because without HoT installed you cannot enjoy that content.

I don’t need to do that, my main character is already a glorified Charr-pimp with bling hanging off every extremity. I only care about my main account and I have plenty of character slots.

Thanks Anet, this restored most or all of my faith in you as developers, and your dedication to old fans and new alike. Hopefully marketing mess ups like this won’t happen again, but considering the last paragraph in that blog post they probably won’t. Good job overall.
Well, looks like Anet finally found the fire extinguishers. Guess this didn’t/wouldn’t die out on its own, eh?
There were a few items that I’d like to point out: In order to get a free character slot, one has to pre-purchase Heart of Thorns. No pre-purchase, no free character slot. In contrast, I suppose that I could buy GW1 campaigns and when added to Prophesies, would still get two character slots for Factions and Nightfall, right? Nine years later.
Also, what will happen for future expansions? “In the future, if we release further Guild Wars 2 expansions, we plan to offer all of the prior expansions, the core game, and the latest expansion for one single purchase price.”
So, basically, this situation very well may happen again. Only next time Anet can say that they already told their players what will happen. For your sake, Anet, I really hope you make your fans happy with HoT, especially the amount of content. Otherwise, your fans are going to have a very valid reason to complain and/or abstain.
(edited by Revyn.8961)
Thank you anet for responding to the community’s concerns and even more sorry for all the vitrol and drama you guys have had to face over it. You guys keep up the amazing, awesome work!! Not that I wasn’t already planning on it but I will be sure to preorder soon!

I didn’t think you wanted to criticize me, I just wanted to state my position.
Though I really wish people would stop pre-ordering and buying season-passes and the like. Companies don’t make these offers out of the kindness of their heart but to more or less exploit the enthusiasm of their customers. Oh well, it’s a losing battle it seems.
And if that reads like criticism, it probably is
Gaile, so what happens to the people that pre ordered the more expensive additions because they wanted ONE character slot for the expansion?
Nothing, because there are no such people. Noone orders an edition worth $25 more just to get something they can easily buy for $10.
Have to agree with you. You could have just as easily bought the $50 copy and paid $10 extra for the slot if that’s really all you wanted it for. But you obviously wanted the shinies too. And you got all that.
Also, what will happen for future expansions? “In the future, if we release further Guild Wars 2 expansions, we plan to offer all of the prior expansions, the core game, and the latest expansion for one single purchase price.”
The way I understood that last part, combined with the rest of the post and the overall context of this entire “affair”, they will give character slots/something of similar of value in gems to old players prepurchasing any future expansion, and the usual 5 slots + all existing content to new ones.
I will gladly pre-purchase now that Anet have sufficiently apologised and included the character slot in good faith.
I didn’t think you wanted to criticize me, I just wanted to state my position.

I also mostly stopped pre purchasing anything. But as he said…10 wonderful years without any major flaws is enaugh for me to trust them.
Just like I trusted them when spending 150$ on the first game without even knowing a release date.
All we wanted was a GvG.
A lot of the vets seem happy with this change, and I’m glad they are happy now too. That said I’m still not going to pre-purchase. Maybe offering 800 gems would have been better. I’m in the same boat.
I too think it’s great they acknowledge poor decisions, but still think this was a rather odd ball approach to resolution. Seems very “Oh crap, we messed up… gotta think of something to fix this… oh yeah, give em a free character slot. They will all need that anyway…” … or not.
Please clarify: By the new wording, it’s buy pre order and get a slot, if you wait until after release day, no new slot? Nowhere to put that new class?
Is that correct? Going from bad to worse if that is correct- even less incentive to purchase after release, and given the high price and lack of solid content I won’t be pre ordering at the moment, I’ll be waiting for the sale.
If your waiting for a sale then you can afford the 800 gems/ 10$ it cost for an extra slot mate.
I knew you guys would make it right. I am thankful for the character slot but I am still going to hold out on buying early until I see more stuff . I am going to buy it tho so dont worry Love you guys made me cry
I don’t think Anet should be praised for this. They could have proactively offered this, but no, only when suffering backlash do they make changes. They refused to listen to the people months ago about including a character slot. They are only now including one as damage control.
Come on man put the pitchfork down already; even I changed my tune.
sadly.
I all heard was. You bought core game $60.00 USD on release.
Now you spent $100USD
which is can be the equivalent break down of Core game ($60 USD) + 4000 gems ( $50 USD) in Black lion TP, = $110 USD.
hence,
110 – 10 = 100 thus the 10 dollars you saved is all the extra stuff they tacked on to it and the expansion.
However, You already own the Core game — therefore you gave $ 50 USD away for the expansion, bought yourself 4000 gems from the black lion for another $50 and got a bunch of tacked on junk with it for free.
new players are still better off – they will get everything you just got and save the initial $60.00 you gave for free.
___________________ INSTEAD_______________________________
You should have just bought the expansion itself, and bought 4000 gems following that.
[You could have saved $20.00 or more assuming Heart of Thorns can be sold separate]

I agree, Bolkovon. Folks should probably hear what ol’ Total Biscuit said on the question: ‘Should you preorder videogames?’
As a rule I prefer not to pre-purchase. I buy products after they are released and have been reviewed. The language in this implies that these newly added rewards are only for pre-purchasing. Is that correct? Thank you for a reply and for addressing a couple of the issues, at least for those that will pre-purchase, but I’m still a little in the dark here, too much so to give up $50 quite yet.
No release date + Unclear deal of the pre-purchase + Unclear amount of new playable content + Don’t care much for guild halls and limited gliding = Not sold quite yet.
So, now that it’s obvious this isn’t going to go away any time soon, and it’s not conveniently confined to just the official forums, if we’ll go ahead and give them our money in advance even though we don’t still know exactly what we’re getting (if, that is, there’s more to it than we’ve been shown) or when we’re going to get it, they’ll be so kind as to give us the free character slot they should have given us in the first place.
Um.
Nope.
What’s in HoT that we haven’t got? Is it for real, or something it’s not? It’s almost the same we paid for the game when it was new. When is it due?
If anet won’t say, I won’t pay. I’ll tell you what’s true, neither should you.
you just got played.
Thank you, Gaile. I am pleased Anet is listening to its customers and responding to our concerns.
I have now pre-purchased HoT and I can be excited again about all the great updates, betas, and new content headed our way.
ANGRY VET WINS !!!!!!!!!!!!!
THEY BORE ME!!!!!.
Thanks for the update Gail! This is a very nice addition.
I’ll probably wait until the last possible minute just so I have a better idea of what exactly I’m buying and possible player feed back.

As I see it, the only thing you’ll be missing out on is the new PvE map(s), the new profession, and the elite specializations. From my understanding, the guild stuff doesn’t even matter, as long as the guild leader bought the expansion. (The guild hall stuff to me seems the most interesting out of the non PvP or WvW stuff)
I don’t really need a new character, really as I already have 8, one each prof, including an empty 9th slot. And I don’t really need the elite specs… maybe one or 2 of my chars I might want to use them, but no biggie. PvE… don’t really care much about that; haven’t really even been to much of the new PvE content since Karkas flooded the islands.
That’s kinda my take it. And, for me, if I end up really wanting the expansion… as someone who has been there since the beginning, I don’t really have any incentive to buy early anyway. So why…
Veteran here, and I’m going to throw my hat in the “shafted” bin. $50 is entirely too much for an add-on expansion. No MMO charges a full game price (or near to, some full games are still $50, others $60) for an expansion. The character slot is worthless. It’s $0 value. It’s 800 gems, but it’s so easy to earn that with in-game gold that it provides $0 practical dollar value, so the gesture is hollow. Give me a $10-15 discount on the pre-purchase, and you got me. Give me a character slot and it’s still a slap in the face, I have more gold in-game than I know what to do with without just flat-out buying a legendary, and I’d much rather save the $10-15 in actual money than the 800 gems which cost me $0 (or fewer gems if I wait for the char slot sale).
It’s a shame that people fall for the character slot so easily – traditionally MMOs that launches a new class add on character slots to accommodate it as part of the purchase, not a pre-order incentive. That’s just silly.
Ah well. I know ANet isn’t supported by subscription revenue but BL store revenue so I get that this is a move that’s probably needed to get some good cash flow going, but at the price of a full launch game, there’s approximately 0% chance that there’s going to be enough content to justify it. That’s why expansions are always priced lower. At least be honest about it and not try to placate people with a free character slot that would be free to anyone anyway. Anything that can be earned in-game has a $0 value, even if it can be bought for $ faster.
I’ll probably wait until the last possible minute just so I have a better idea of what exactly I’m buying and possible player feed back.
I’ll be doing the same, but I’m glad that they responded positively to the player feedback.

No pitchfork here. I just don’t think Anet should be put on a pedestal for fixing something that should never have been a problem in the first place.
I really do appreciate that they are willing to make changes based on customer feedback, I just don’t like the extent the playerbase has to take it to actually make it happen.
People were warning/begging/asking Anet months and months ago about adding a character slot to the expansion. If they really wanted to listen they probably should have done it then. Not when they see bad press and go into damage control. At this point they’re only doing it because it’s in their best interest.
I was going to buy the expansion either way. I’m too excited for some of the stuff to not buy it.
(edited by Fernling.1729)
Glad to see you guys address our criticism! Sadly I can’t say I’m still on board with a pre-purchase because I still don’t know if their will be enough content to justify the price, but if you reveal more details about map size/map amount I’d seriously consider pre-ordering!
Seeing that the Anet team responded to the upcry of their playerbase is really nice to see and with or without the additional charackter slot , 50$ for yet more years of joy we’ve already had with the game is well worth it . Nevertheless everyone likes to be acknoledged so ty~ for the nice bonus u granted us
Edit/PS: there truely are more expensive hobbies that will not fullfill your evening as gw2 does ! atleast for 50$

What’s the calculation method you used to get 4k worth of gems in 2 months?
I already have a second account. 2 more would be entirely unneeded.
You cannot buy the Rytlock mini. You cannot buy the glider skin. You cannot buy the Guild Hall fluff.
I am buying the $100 pack for these items, as well as the discount on gems. $50 + $100 is more than $100 and I wouldn’t get the extra things that I would like to go with my game that Make Me Happy please do not tell me how to spend the money I have saved up since January when they announced the expansion.
I am on a budget and have budgeted accordingly to acquire what I’d like.
Oh, and I bought the game over 2 years ago. That amount of money being “given” away as a point is invalid.
Stuff! Stuffy stuff stuff stuff!!
The game has been out since almost 3 years. You can’t price it with 60$ anymore.
It has been on sale for 10$ in the last few months. 10$ are equivalent to 800gems which gives you a character slot.
So as a veteran you get HoT+character slot while new players get HoT+base game.
Both have the same value.
All we wanted was a GvG.
Some of us aren’t “falling for it” we are compromising, also waiting for more info. However I support those of you that are still unhappy, keep fighting the good fight.
Thanks for listening to us Anet! I know us players can moan quite a bit, but know that it’s only because we care about keeping GW2 amazing. I think by providing vets with a bit of compensation with the character slot is really good and a nice touch on your part. I’ve been really impressed recently with the responses you guys have given, and answering questions on the forums. Future looks good!
sadly.

What if he wanted all that tacked-on junk? Also, the core game hasn’t been $60 since launch. It’s currently $39.99. Besides that, Anet themselves stated that they tacked on the core game FOR FREE, implying that the price of the standard expansion would have been $50 regardless of whether or not the core game was included.
-BnooMaGoo.5690
I have to say I am very impressed with GW2 !
You have listened to your community feed back and taken steps to solve this divisive issue
Having spent over 9000 hours in GW1 and over 2000 hours in GW2
This is our alter life
Thank You for Great Games!

yeah i know. its a shame they just couldnt give us the expac. would make more since on my end. im happy now. i dont need it free. all i wanted was not to pay the extra or the alternative. kill my alt. yes she dies in the name of the revenant and the 4 gods he brings. well 3 that we know of.
Even after that blog post I still don’t feel too hot(pun intended) about the expansion pack. Form what we’ve seen and hear so far from anet it doesn’t seem like much content yet it has a 50.00 base price, unless this expansion is up to caliber with expansions like WoW and FF14 then it’s not even worth it tbh. We need Anet to reveal more about the content coming to HoT so I can finally set my mind at ease(or disappointment).

who wants to farm for something that takes time. its a game NOT A GRIND. right anet? to all those collection achievements i have not yet spent time in. maybe now i can grind… oops i mean work on those . haha
The interesting case is the +$50 version which gave $50 in gems and a slot worth $10.
If the bonus deals still say ‘+ a slot’ I’m going to guess that you get 1 for preorder and another for the bonus $$$.
Praise the sun ya’ll WOO!!
How about praise A-Net instead?
I had already bought the ultimate pack but I appreciate the consideration of the community. I think including a character slot with the basic package was the right thing to do. Everything else… That’s really amazing and so much more than what is fair.
Thank you A-Net.
