You can?

The BONUS slot that was added AFTER pre-purchase started seems to be coming with HoT release, but the slot coming with Deluxe and Ultimate version is usable more or less as soon as you register the code (might need to relog).

I got the Ultimate HoT package and I have, already, used my char slot.
In fact, I just leveled up to level 32 last night.
Might be a bug, report it.
But if you are talking about the bonus slot, I have no idea, I have not received that one yet.

Just for the record, are we talking about the normal char slot or the BETA slot?
Because if it’s the normal slot, it might be a bug or a relog is in order, or maybe just wait half an hour or so, sometimes it takes a little time for stuff to show up. If it’s the latter, that’s a beta slot, and since there is no beta right now, you can’t use it. Also, it will go away again after HoT is released.

Eh.. there was never ever anything at all said that buying Guild Wars 2 would give you access to every new piece of content ever.
Expansions in the vast majority of games cost money, despite people having paid money for the original game. That is just how things work in the real world.
They need to get money in order to survive. Their employees are people just like you and me, and they also have families to feed and rents to pay.

After some thought the only way this price would be semi-acceptable is if we got an additional 5 char slots, equivalent to the number gotten with creation of a new account.

The free character slot will be given on July 10th. Any account that upgrades after that date will have to wait for the weekly batch to receive their slot. FAQ

Was there a statement where they explicitly said that if you buy the basic expansion after release, you will not get a char slot? I’d like to see it as I haven’t so far.

They can add whatever bonuses they want after launch, but it wouldn’t be the same deal. As it is right now, the veteran character slot is only available to those who upgrade prior to launch. Under the FAQ they have it listed as an exclusive pre-purchase bonus.

Maybe. With advertisements, the devil is in the details.

https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/94582027-Heart-of-Thorns-Pre-Purchase-FAQ
“If you registered your core Guild Wars 2 game before January 23, 2015 and register a pre-purchase serial code for Heart of Thorns any time before the expansion is released, you’ll receive a free character slot! Once you apply a pre-purchase serial code, you’ll be eligible for the slot regardless of where you bought the core game.”

The key word here is likely “free”. An expansion pack after the release can still have a char slot in it, as long as it’s not free. It might cost as little as one penny and get around the exclusive pre-purchase part, as that’s only for free char slots. Most likely if they offer a slot it will be discounted. Or the expansion can cost $40 (discounted because no beta access offered and because it’s after release) and then $10 added to cover a char slot, for a total of $50.

I’m not saying this will happen. I’m pointing out that advertisements are slippery and don’t always mean what people think they mean.

Actually, as I look at the wording on the PPAddress …

“For all players who registered the core Guild Wars 2® game prior to January 23, 2015 and who upgrade their account by prepurchasing and registering any Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns edition before Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns‘ launch, we will add one additional character slot to your Guild Wars 2 account.”

and the FAQ …

“If you registered your core Guild Wars 2 game before January 23, 2015 and register a pre-purchase serial code for Heart of Thorns any time before the expansion is released, you’ll receive a free character slot! Once you apply a pre-purchase serial code, you’ll be eligible for the slot regardless of where you bought the core game.”

… there is nothing in either phrasing that prevents them from offering the same deal after HoT launch.

The use of the word, “Exclusive,” in the heading for that portion of the FAQ could be referring to exclusively for GW2 veterans and exclusive refunds for those who purchased core via GW2.com (rather than a 3rd party vendor) since HoT announcement.

What’s most likely, imo, is that HoT will launch without the slot, but it will be added if post-launch sales are disappointing and people cite the slot as the reason.

Logged in to GW2 just few moments ago, and noticed that the weekend testing were going on.

Upon examining the character selection, 1 extra character slot is available, not just the beta slot.

Did ANet change their decision about limiting free character slot to more expensive versions of HoT?

They gave anybody who pre-purchased and already owned the game an extra slot on top of the deluxe/ultimate one.

Let’s assume, for the sake of discussion, that they do that. Would everyone really be okay with that???

I mean, the idea that they would drum up pre-purchase sales by intentionally misleading people into believing that they will not receive a character slot unless they pre-purchase is, in my opinion, completely unethical.

I’ll be blunt. This character slot should not be considered “free”. People are paying a pretty hefty price tag for even the most basic version of HoT. My feeling is that if you are paying fifty dollars for just an expansion pack, that should certainly cover the cost of a character slot without needing to feel as though the Gods of Good Fortune have seen it upon themselves to graciously bestow you with an amazing gift that you should have to feel grateful for.

I didn’t want a character slot for “free”. I wanted to pay them fifty dollars— at release— for an expansion pack that included the ability to access the new profession without having to pay them an additional sum of money or delete an existing character.

I can’t help but feel as if ANet has gotten away with making so many people actually feel grateful for being granted bare-minimum functionaly of a fifty dollar product.

I don’t know why I am bothering to post in a 35-page-thread when what I’ve said has likely been mentioned but here goes:

World of Warcraft’s latest expansion Warlods of Draenor is 49.99 for just the expansion, and nothing else. For 69.99 you can get a bunch of fluff. If you are an entirely new player, you need to pay another 19.99 to buy the original ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD game, and then continue to pay 14.99 a month.

What are we complaining about again?

People are never happy. WoW is not a good compare since its a subscription game that is dying off (IMHO). But with the 49.99 expansion for WoW you do get a instant level 90 item for a new character. IMHO that would equate to a new character slot for GW2 (which we are all getting now).

really, no reason to really continue this thread. The price is what it is, we are all now getting the free character slot for the Rev. No reason to be unhappy about that.

Maybe I’m getting too old. Maybe I’m too cynical. Maybe after all these years I’ve gotten inured to Public Relations Speak. I never for a moment thought that the slot was a gift or something for which one should be grateful.

I instead view it as a sign that prepurchase sales were not as high as desired and that the slot was a sore point for people who might otherwise buy. I view it as a tactic to increase sales. Given that view, I expect that if post-launch sales numbers are not as desired, and if the slot is still a sore point, the way is open for them to sweeten the pot again, for the same reason they did this time.

Would people be angry? One or more segments of this community gets angry any time ANet moves, breathes or speaks. As far as this community goes, there is no everyone. Once again, I’ll point to my age and cynicism for this view as well. However, I think in both cases I’ve got a point.

No, we are not “all now getting the free character slot for the Rev”. That’s my whole point. Only the people who pre-purchase are getting the character slot.

I don’t mind pre-purchase incentives for people who want to give money to a company in return for a promise of future product delivery. Things like weapon skins, or a new costume, or even exclusive armor skins…all fine. But a character slot is necessary to gain full use of the product they are already charging fifty dollars for. There is no ethical reason at all for them to expect people to pay even more money to access the new profession or have to delete a character.

It’s an unnecessarily manipulative sales tactic and is most definitely a reason for some of us to be unhappy. I get that you’re happy with being forced to pre-purchase in order to get a character slot for the new profession, and that’s fine. More power to you.

You do not have any information about the standard HoT package. You are just speculating and twisting the facts to your liking. Only HoT pre-purchasers are getting character slot is correct because we do not have any information about anything else.

Look, there are really only two possibilities here:

1. They are withholding a character slot from anyone who does not pre-purchase the basic version of HoT. (which is, in my opinion, an unnecessarily manipulative sales tactic)

OR

2. They are intentionally advertising HoT in a manner that misleads people into thinking they have to pre-purchase HoT to get a character slot with the basic version. (which would be downright dishonest as well as manipulative)

And for the record, I am twisting no “facts” to my liking. My statement of what I find to be an unnecessarily manipulative sales tactic is an opinion, not an objective, provable fact, and I never claimed otherwise.

Most people were upset thinking Anet was making current players rebuy the core game to get HoT. Which they weren’t doing at all. The core game comes free with a prepurchase of HoT.

So now people are upset about what? Anet is doing an incredibly smart and “Everyone wins” move and you want to cry that it’s not fair? Why? We get an influx of new players, which is good in keeping the game alive, and now old players are even getting a free character slot for any of the packs in addition to the extra slot if you get one of the more expensive ones. Being mad about any of that is simply you just acting like a child who thinks of no one else but themselves.

As for those that are upset with the pricing of the expansion it basically comes down to this . . . don’t buy the expansion if you don’t think it’s worth your money. Anyways, they’ve already gone on to say they aren’t going to have gear in the expansion that is better than anything from the core game so having just the core game is perfectly fine unlike other MMOs that require you to get the expansions or be left behind a “You can’t participate with everyone else because they are higher levels and have better gear” wall. The expansion is 100% optional and is just bonus content to your game, something more game companies should do.

As for the character slot issue for Revenant? They already fixed that and you don’t have enough character slots with the core game to play all the classes, so it’s not that big of a deal since you already have to get 3 extra slots to play all the core classes. Not to mention you can get that character slot by just using in-game gold.

I understand Heart of thorns comes with the base game when you buy it off the website, but asking us to buy the game at such a price when we already HAVE the base game, seems to be asking a bit…much.

Is there a way to get a discounted price for those of us who already OWN guild wars 2, or some kind of value added to recognize we’re basically paying for something we already own, even by buying the “Standard” edition?

That’s kinda preventing me from purchasing at this point I don’t feel comfortable paying for what I already own.

to put it simply you are NOT buying the basegame again, the expansion is what costs $50 , just the expansion. To make it easier for new players to get into it, the base game is given as a free addition. It does NOT influence the price of the expansion.

Knowing that, whether its worth it or not is for you to decide. You can always wait for the inevitable price lowering that comes with the expansion being out for some time and buy it then or not.

They keep trying to make it sound like a good deal. The players who already own the core aren’t being penalized for already owning it, from their prospective. The New players are getting a $50+ gift, compliments of Arenanet. It would be horrible for a new player to pay $99 at one time. Instead make the previous owners pay it for the exact same content. oh well.

Prior to HoT pre-purchasing, they were advertising the game at a reduced price of $10 to get people ready for HoT. That $10 would get you the heroic edition, which offers $20 worth of gem store bonuses by itself. The core game that is included with HoT is just the base game without any bonuses. It has no value.

If they were going to reduce the price, they wouldn’t reduce it, they would increase it. They should have simply sold HoT by itself for $49.99 and offered a new player bundle, which includes the core game, for $59.99. This could already be true. All they have to do is make the difference then say that the $59.99 bundle is on sale if you pre-purchase now.

If you factor the veteran character slot and the actual value of gems, the game is $10 off.

In fact, you are getting something that new player won’t get: an extra character slot, which retails for US$10, the same deeply discounted price ANet charged for the entire game a few months ago.

So, in effect, you are getting a discount, just not necessarily in the way you expect. ANet has done it this way to make sure that new players don’t have to pay extra.

With that said yes we are paying for an expansion..and Anet being Anet wants to give new players a break. We played for three years for 50 bucks (some alot more) Im sure we can play another 3 years for 50 bucks if ya want to. Thats pretty cheap for the caliber of game GW2 is actually.
New players are getting the core game for free by purchasing the expansion.
Now if we could only stop them from dumbing down the game for new players, we had to work for the buffs we have.

This is true. Guild Wars 2 Heart of Thorns is worth 50$, because history shows that veteran players had fun 3 years so far for just 50$ when they bought Core game.

Also please note veteran players can play even more for that 50$ they payed 3 years ago, because there is no release date on Heart of Thorns, so in fact that 50$ from 3 years ago may count as 4 years of entertainment (assuming HoT will release next year).

No matter how you see it, HoT deserves 50$, especially for new players getting so much content out of this deal. If you are a veteran player, you should be convinced HoT deserves 50$ just because you had fun 3 years so far for that same amount of money. What’s another 50$ for another 3 years of entertainment (assuming HoT is released on September 1st this year)?

I’m happy to pay fifty dollars for this expansion, since i’ve played the game just a couple months after launch and it has brought ME much happiness. If you’ve been playing this game since launch, and haven’t paid anything else besides the initial fee to buy the game, I don’t see why fifty dollars is that hard. Every three years you pay fifty dollars for an expansion. That’s less then a dollar fifty per month to play.

I bought the game a month ago for 20 USD, the idea of having to pay an additional 50 for something I already got 90% of is absurd and frankly insulting(I don’t even get living story content…)

The slot for pre-ordering is insufficient compensation and the 10 dollar charge is pretty ridiculous in itself considering the cost of harddrive space today(which is next to nothing).

I may buy HOT when its price drops but not until then. The pricing scheme is an obvious slap in the face to the current player base.

I believe you qualify for a refund of your $20.

No, I bought it through Amazon which according to them, makes it “not possible”. Which is also absurd, if they can’t uphold the same level of service for people who have bought through amazon digital download then they shouldn’t be selling through amazon digital download.

The whole thing is trash.

No Monthly Fee
With that said yes we are paying for an expansion..and Anet being Anet wants to give new players a break. We played for three years for 50 bucks (some alot more) Im sure we can play another 3 years for 50 bucks if ya want to. Thats pretty cheap for the caliber of game GW2 is actually.
New players are getting the core game for free by purchasing the expansion.
Now if we could only stop them from dumbing down the game for new players, we had to work for the buffs we have.

im playing 300 days and i payd 39.99 not had access to LS1/SAB and now i have to pay more for base(there are no free things in business) plus expac not a kittening chance, and as the person above me i purchased thru a retailer.

So, the Deluxe and Legendary versions of HoT have a whole bunch of cool bonus stuff, alongside the base game, though they cost significantly more.

My question is, when you pre-purchase one of these bundles, do you receive the additional items (e.g. the bonus character slot & the gems) immediately… or do you have to wait for HoT to launch?

I ask because I’ve run out of gems, and am trying to decide whether to get the legendary version of the game, or whether I should just buy the standard/deluxe one…

I don’t normally buy such large numbers of gems at once, but it sounds like a really good offer… if I have to wait months to get them, though, I might just give it a miss.

Thanks.
