give us the revenant character with the character slot with the prepurchase now so we can start getting use to it ….OR gems to buy a character slot. Then you just open areas as it gets done. This will also counter the idea that the package is tiny and increase pre-purchase sales, while appreciating the value of the core engine and eliminating the idea of new players getting 2 softwares as they are now simply getting the latest core version of guildwars.

let the vets explain to new players how things work, and lets get right to bug fixing and balancing skillz!!

this is no longer an expansion, it’s Hot being the First event in Guildwars version 2.5

IMO, what we’ve seen so far does not at all supply enough value for kitten price tag. I’m waiting, however, to see what gets revealed with more beta events closer to launch. It may be that there is considerably more content there than there seems to be at present.

the problem with this, is …history shows that anet goes above and beyond what they first release – so I’m not buying into the argument of this ‘offering’ being small.

I trust anet to give us the expansion and more, their presentation was all wrong imo and it devalued the countless hours that the team will be adding to the game above and beyond this ‘packaging’

but this is something more well known by a vet than a new player ….so I can respect why a new player would see it that way. They don’t even know if they want to stay yet.

Started GW1 a couple years before GW2 launch, and have been here since the first beta. And history tells me something very different than it tells you.

In the past three years I’ve learned not to expect anything more than what I can plainly see.

The Living stories were an expansion all their own. They didn’t charge for it, so you didn’t see it maybe ?

I have many things I can complain about, but anet getting lazy about content isn’t one of them. If anything, at one point I felt overwhelmed with all the new content we got….to a point that I felt relieved after holidays lol

I am personally for the game and character to have more personal meaning / value – i’m a distinguished asuran, i am not generic by any sense of the word, no bookah skillbars for me thank you!

I was just wondering this today, as I have two names I’d like to reserve.
So one now another later, what about the rest of the stuff, mini, gems etc?

There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon

As a bundle with the core game I can definitely see the price point of $50. I just don’t understand why they can’t sell the expansion only and separate from the base game for a cheaper price for us veterans. Adding a character slot does not entice me one bit and I actually feel like it should come with the content anyways from the get go… $30-40 for the expansion would seem reasonable. Maybe $35 like how most DLC for console expansions run nowadays (I know..I know…all PC gamers will probably cry foul from making that comparison but oh well..lol Expansions are expansion no matter what system they come from). All I know is that this new area better be as large as the base game to justify the cost. Because of this price and what we know so far, I will definitely not buy the expansion upon launch until I know how much content I am getting.

It’s the same price for veterans as for new players. Depending of if you’re a veteran or new, you get either a free character slot or the core game (which is needed to play).

For the life of me I can’t understand how the illusion that someone else might be getting a little more than someone could possibly interfere with a person’s enjoyment of the game. Why does it have to turn into an “Us vs Them and I want more than they get” scenario? We’re finally getting a freaking expansion. We’re getting a lot of stuff, including effectively ten new professions (consider the specializations early phases of new professions), guild halls, maps, etc. There’s a lot to be happy about without this incessant need to peek over the fence to see what your neighbors are getting as well, like it really will somehow affect you.

The Living stories were an expansion all their own. They didn’t charge for it, so you didn’t see it maybe ?

The Living Story was a failure.

Neither season was “an expansion all their own”. Season 1 lacked permanence, and both it and Season 2 lacked many of the features that actually make people interested in expansions (many new skills, new professions, a new race would also fit, etc).

If anything, they were like small DLCs. Arguably, Season 2 is overpriced at $20.00, considering how little it offers.

But regardless, they both failed. ArenaNet faced heavy criticism from players after how temporary the content from Season 1 was; and Season 2 was then considerably more subdued, keeping most of it content in short instances (other than the horribly designed, grind-based Silverwastes).

More importantly, both couldn’t prevent GW2’s earnings from falling. Season 1 was followed by a very different business model in season 2, which was followed by a very different business model in season 3 (which became HoT). It’s rather obvious that ArenaNet is experimenting, to see what works, and that they keep changing their approach because so far nothing has really worked.

If HoT is successful, we will see ArenaNet moving away from the Living World model and focusing more on expansions, until they are hit by the same things that hit GW1 and stop working in the game.

We’re getting a lot of stuff, including effectively ten new professions (consider the specializations early phases of new professions)

You’re welcome to laugh, of course, but you’ll need to convince me that each specialization, Chronomancer for example, doesn’t have the potential to turn into a full profession in and of itself that your mesmer can swap into. More weapons, more skills and traits… what more do you need? The only reason they’re not considered a full on profession is numbers. One weapon vs many. Few skills vs. more.

The template is being laid for one character to represent multiple professions. Today’s Ranger could be tomorrow’s Ranger/Druid/Commando depending on which profession you chose to play (provided they’re all fleshed out).

The story pieces of the living story releases have been the equivalent of what you’d expect to see in an expansion. After playing through all of Guild Wars, I’ve seen about the same story content from either of the expansions as I had with both seasons of the Living Story.

The grind with the LS is the same that you saw in GW1 for titles. We actually got a new sPvP mode but it was limited to a single map. There were no new dungeons but we did get fractals plus the temporary dungeons (although those hot converted to fractals).

I know how it works…lol But you’re pretty much saying that the core game (which includes how many character slots and the WHOLE ENTIRE GAME) to a new user is equal to one additional character slot that the veterans are getting. lol Wut. But anyways, I’m not trying to start an “us vs. them” as you’re deeming it. I think its a great bundle for a new user!

All I am saying is why can’t they detach the expansion from the core game and sell it separately for the ones who already own the game and have owned the game if its not going to be nearly as big as the core game? If I am paying near full price of what I paid for the core game, then I expect near equal amounts of content for the price. And maybe we will get it, but I can’t see myself risking that kind of money to find out. And like I said, that whole deal with the extra character slot is something they should include anyways and not as a “pre-order bonus.” Does anyone remember how GW1 expansions worked? It was $50 but we did get a full games worth of content AND character slots…lol

Will the expansion add as much content as the core game? No it won’t.
What will it add? Not sure.
When will it be out? Not sure.

I understand the uncertainties. I won’t buy it till much later when it’s cheap, but if you love this game, I would think this will be worth it. I saw something about mastery of flight or something. That’s kinda cool I guess. There is no objective answer to this question though but if you try to be somewhat objective I guess it’s not looking like a lot of new content, but who knows?

You’re missing the point.

Badly.

Really, really badly.

Who cares what the new people get? Yes, it’s a great bundle for them… great for them! Hopefully it brings in a lot of new people and that strengthens the game!

But you know what… in addition to that extra character slot we also have something they’ll never have… up to three years of GW2 out of the gate. Put a price, if you can, on that alone. Have you had fun? Got your money’s worth? If it’s been worth it to you so far then who gives a flying monkey’s left buttcheek what new people get? We’re getting the expansion plus an extra character slot (or two, depending…).

No expansions are truly as big as the core game. Hell, games like WoW charged a crapload more for their expansions if you think about it… you’d buy an expansion and they’d trickle it in over six months or so, making you pay 15 per month on top of the purchase price. You had to pay well over $100 to even play the full expansion. It was ridiculous.

that’s perception though, one could say with all the new changes already happening in the game, this is already becoming something new before any extra content was released.

What makes this particularly hard, is that it seems that everyone has their own view of what defines new “stuff” worth buying, and completely missing the bigger picture, but on the same hand, I am by no means a white knight, and it does seem like anet is not communicating effectively with the community. My big picture is sort of on faith, but on the same hand they’ve sort of put a damper on many place I’ve enjoyed in the past…
We don’t know what’s coming next, anet doesn’t seem to follow along with what players want and perceive …..and everyone has their own philosophy on what hot is supposed to be. lol

anet can say it’s their game and their decision to go wherever they see best, players can say it’s our money and we want what we want. – maybe a version 2.5 can simply represent a new beginning to end the confusion.

it’s really the same kittens in a different bag, except with an acknowledgement from anet to work more closely with us to work on things we want ?

What makes HoT worth $50?

Nothing.

Keep in mind ArenaNet has seeing declining profits, and that they invested a lot in the China release, which was a failure. They’re now releasing an overpriced expansion in order to make up for the money they have lost, but this is clearly a move to help them, not for the benefit of their players.

This is a good point. I was surprised to hear about the China release go up in flames as quickly as it did. Clearly the expansion is priced $20 too high. Anet feels that by squeezing an extra $20 out of players they can recoup their losses. What they haven’t considered is the resistance players have been showing.

Failure? How exactly is failure defined these days? Of course, I haven’t seen anything recent, however this:

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/07/10/guild-wars-2-sales-more-than-double-thanks-to-chinese-launch

“Guild Wars 2 has over 3.8 million Chinese players according to a census uploaded to Reddit, all accrued in just two months after launch.

This means ArenaNet’s MMO has more than doubled its global playerbase since launching in the new territory. The last update we got on Western sales was back in August 2013, when the figure stood at 3.5 million. This figure is likely to have risen since then but, even if we assume it hasn’t, this means global sales of Guild Wars 2 should now be well past the 7 million mark."

How are you “ripped off” anyway? You know the condition of the deal. You can enter a consensual agreement or refuse to, unless you omitted there is someone blackmailing you to buy HoT just now.

So it is not a rip off unless you pay for it.
In other news, something cannot be a swindle, unless you are the victim of the swindle.

a) yes.
a) no, not unless you are, unless someone is. Without at least an intended victim, there is no case of swindle. Please tell me a case of swindle without the intent of victimizing someone by it. Analogykittenfailing badly here.

The major points are probably Revenant, elite specializations, and the new craftable WvW guild items like charr tanks, etc. That last might be available anyway, hard to say without more information. Also I imagine there might be a new reward track or two in PvP, otherwise I can’t think of anything else.

^LOL.

For a 50$ Expansion a new map or two for Conquest and Stronghold a long with the rest of the content would warrant the price tag. At least for me. I just wish conquest got some love. I’m sick of playing the same maps.

i usually log on for a little bit to fight tequatl – that point seems moot now as it’s ridiculously overpowered….so i have to pass on that

i use to wvw , but since the match balances were never addressed, and right now it’s an op 1 shotter fest ….while my server jumped up to a higher rank/bracket in wvw …we are a small team but we are good …so now we are trashed for the next few fights

the spvp is just not for me…. i’d work on my grandmaster characters but the new ‘features’ and new ‘crafter’ might make that effort moot

i’m at a loss, and don’t even feel confident to choose something else i might enjoy doing because it will be upgraded to some form of parcheesi in some future patch.

it’s not the price of the expansion that’s bugging me, it’s the fact that they always seek to kill what i start having fun doing! I kind of want to log in now to play but feeling this big “Why?!” question from deep in my soul!

Fortunately debating with you guys has proven to be fun and intellectually stimulating.
what’s wrong with this picture ?!

i think anet needs to send us a memo of what they want us to do, cuz seriously, i’m not enjoying this play as you want, then they kill the things we play with.

Between the title of the thread and the opening statement/question, it’s a bit confusing.

Is your query about what you might receive before release, or after release?

Either way, you can read about all the upcoming new maps and game modes for WvW and PvP in the News blogs accessed through the link above.

Good luck.

Yeah this…. I went ahead and answered what you will get from purchasing the expansion.

The WvW map and Stronghold are going to be available regardless of purchase.

most mmo xpacs give you huge maps, and things to do. anet tries to make you think a free toon slot for a new class is something to behold, when other mmo xpacs give those to you FREE.

and this xpac only opens up 3 areas in maguuma, out of the HUGE tyrian world atlas. this maguuma isnt even maps, it is areas because they are much smaller, like dry top.

and after leaving the broken personal stories to linger rotting like no one cares abt the game for nearly 3yrs, wtf makes you think this game/xpac is worth even $20, let alone $50….?

Behold, the prophet of HoT, privvied to information the rest of us can only dream of.

Seriously, raging about price and throwing out some completely unverified “facts” as justification only makes you look like a kitten .

Maybe it should play the game before it spout nonsence. There will be Maps ( unknown how many but more then 1) each map will have 3 layers, underground, ground floor, and top of trees.
The personal story its attacking was fixed not to long ago aswell. ( and they werent broken for 3 years I played it just fine in early 2013)

It’s not like ANet didn’t go an extended period of time before announcing numbers here in the U.S. either. Some 3.8 million sales out of the gate in China isn’t exactly a failure.

The numbers are fake.

In truth, GW2 underperformed.

In fact, GW2’s failure has been reiterated, even.

Soon the server merges began.

Meanwhile, GW2’s profits kep falling, despite the China release.

F-A-I-L-U-R-E.

I wonder if your “ten new professions” (LOOOOOOOOOOL) will be enough to make HoT a success. Otherwise, the future wouldn’t exactly be bright for ArenaNet.

I don’t get why people are complaining about the amount of info we have on HoT. Why does every detail need to be explained before getting it? Whatever happened to discovering things in the game that you didn’t know about?

Why is it being advertised as being a part of the expansion? Stronghold is being listed as a feature for HoT. If it’s being added before the expansion, is it really part of it?

Lol glad to see there are still people who share this sentiment. So many people act like they need every detail before even considering to purchase it but personally the mystery of what’s to come makes me want it all the more. It’s likes one people just don’t have any patience or imagination, glad to see others who still get excited.

Maybe because the Xpac is 50$? I don’t need to see EVERYTHING. Just enough to warrant that price tag. For me, a WvW/PvP player, there’s not a lot. Especially if it’s true that the new WvW world map and PVP mode is to be added BEFORE the expansion. Also…it’s common sense to know everything about a product before you spend your money on it especially when it comes to 50$.

Everybody is different. Everyone values different things. Consumers who don’t critically evaluate value-for-money encourage producers to provide less quantity or quality for an equal or in some cases greater price. Such people are their own worst enemy in this regard.

For the record, I don’t want every detail of HoT, but I would like to know if there are going to be more than two zones (with 3 biomes). I’d like to know that the content does not solely consist of Silverwastes 2.0 and 3.0. I’d like to know that the staying power of the purchase warrants the expenditure. I don’t think that’s an unreasonable reason to wait to spend. If you do, well, refer to the first paragraph, please.
