Pre-Purchase Community Address
You’re right – it did do what HoT did not – royally screw its playerbase in the throathole.
Guild Wars 2 is almost 3 years old. At about this time, games are regularly sold for bargain bin prices or outright given away. The only real issue was the invalidation of recent sales of the core game (made under false information), and they’ve addressed that issue, plus many other sources of the community’s incessant whining, swimmingly with the community address.
Destiny is about a year old – pretty young for an online game – and its expansions are practically fresh out of the oven. And now it’s going to invalidate those very recent purchases – or punish players for having made them in the first place, by bundling them all into an infinitely cheaper deal.
It’s a matter or principle over money for me.
Payed x-pac introduces new professions? yes.
Does the new profession require empty character slot to make? yes.
At that point discussion ends and any decent company would include one additional character slot as x-pac’s basic feature. Simple as that.

We are not buying cars what you said is bullkitten. Games do not degrade the older they are stop being so manipulated.
degrade? don’t you mean depreciate? also, he didn’t use either of those words. maybe you need to work on your reading comprehension skills…as well as your punctuation.

Because its 3 years old it does not mean it has to be cheaper.

Do you have an example from the video game world?
Elder Scrolls:Oblivion for example is almost like 10 years ago and still the same price as the original. The same with Morrowind.
Neverwinter nights 2
Neverwinter night 1 complete the same over 10 years ago.
Should not this games be free by now or about 1 euro then 20 euro?
Cause the official website of the actual company says nothing about the content that I care for, which is:
- How many maps are there actually
- “Challenging new content” – shape, form, presentation, somethingAnd I’m no marketing genius, but the first thing I would mention on that cover is “X new maps to explore!” or “X new dungeons” or “Introducing Raids!” – IF I had a decent number of maps/things to work with.
Of course, I am neither Anet’s marketing department, nor does this mean there will be a lack of content. But for me it certainly implies it.
Look at the back of any MMO box on that website:
- WoW doesn’t show how many maps, dungeons or raids there are.
- Wildstar doesn’t show how many maps, dungeons or raids there are.
- ESO doesn’t show how many maps there are, or even imply that they got instanced content.
Yeah, but those are the base games, not the expansions where you have to show what you are expanding.
WoD didn’t.
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
The only misinforming people here are the usual suspects spouting of marketing hype like it´s gospel.
My information is DIRECTLY from ANet as I´ve eagerly watched the videos of every beta event, which showed different parts of the same map.
Heck, the last one even had the center part impassable, as it was “the heart of the jungle”.Here´s a little life lesson for you fan-atics.
When somebody is selling you something, but won´t show you the whole deal.
Odds are good you´re gona get taken for a ride. But don´t take my word for it, just wait till you´ve seen the finished product.
Oh well.
Too late for some, you´ve already per-ordered. Might you even be in this thread accusing me of lying? Who knows?
Of course all the beta events showed the same map because they only opened one map for the beta event how could you see any other maps. but what this did you forget about the teaser? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOUk2y0K2m8
do you really think thats all the same map? from the huge city panaroma (0:50) to the lush jungle (1:15) to the desert (verdant Brink)? From the big high canopies , some which are roughished and buring (1:50) while others are prestine and green (2:30)
and then lets not forget this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdK69Ni6zQk
tons of Ruines (0:34-0:45), Huge underground caves (1:00-1:06), some kind of temple (1:14)
You really expect all that is cramed in 1 single map, a single map which the beta already uncovered 1/4 of it and there is nothing looking like any of the above references areas?
Just wanted to say that I received the character slots (one + beta) and the items. All good
DPS Benchmarks, Raids, Low-mans etc.
So, does anyone here think that we’ll be fighting Mordremoth in this expansion?
I’d like to know. Especially from the people who did do the pre-purchase.
Most likely and the next living story will probably deal with the aftermath leading up to the next dragon.
Well, you won’t. If the interviews are to be believed, the expansion will merely contain a champion of Mordremoth, but not Mordy himself.

“omg others are getting stuff for free!!!” “I want free stuff too” “CRY CRY CRY” There will no longer be the core game. Only HoT. You are not getting swindled or cheated out of anything get over yourself.
Surely it can not be awfully difficult to understand simple math:
Old players would have been paying 50€ for a deal containing 2 items, but only receive 1 of them on the account that they were just that: Existing players.
New players would be paying 50€for a deal containing 2 items and receive both of them.
One group were paying 50€ and only receiving 1 of the 2 items that were in the bundle, wether you choose to call one free or not is entirely beside the point, what is advertised as part of the deal was not being delivered.
If you haven’t figured it out yet just shout out ‘entitlement’ and I promise I’ll try to explain it better.
simple math = “hey they’re getting something i’m not wah wah wah”
Neverwinter nights 2
Neverwinter night 1 complete the same over 10 years ago.
Should not this games be free by now or about 1 euro then 20 euro?On GOG they’re much cheaper than 20 euro, even less during sales.
18.29 euro is not that much cheaper still this game is way older then GW2 and its not free or at a difference from heaven to earth in price as time went on.
Veterans should pay at most 40 euro but preferably less. We should not pay for the game again.
And as the user above me said we wah wah wah but we will do that until the devs and white knights like him get it.i am pretty sure we have more numbers.

keep at it then. best luck to you too, cause i really really don’t get the impression you’re the majority.
3 maps, a new class, new talents and – YAY!!! – completely free character slot!!!
Well i do realize that speaking to completely kittenized former humans is kinda pointless but there are some that arent beyond salvation yet, no?
I remember they asked 2k rub for PA early access. I have bought it for 90 rub on a Steam sale a few months ago. Steam haves some understanding of value instead of relying on kittenizing and ripping off their clientela.
(edited by Rainbowsand.2438)
It also costs the same as a pair of jeans. I do not want a new pair of jeans. Nor do I want ESO. I want HoT. As does probably everyone who bought it/will buy it.
Your point is… weird.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
Eso has its own problems coming now so just watch that space. People paying subscription will get access to DLC and not be able to play it and new dlc will ahve to be bought. Rumors has it that at $20 for 2 DLCs . This would be what Anet gave us fro free via Living story.
Did you forget the disclaimer that this is currently what we know – aside the map thing – and isn’t a final list?
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
I feel new players are getting the short end of the stick because they have to spend $40 extra dollars to be able to play each of the existing Professions!
This isn’t fair! Not only do they miss out on all the progression Vets enjoy, they have to pay money just to be ‘equal’!
ESO is not worth a copper coin of gw2 universe.
Just saying. (Yes, I played it, I know what I am talking about).
Yes i have completely missed the point that you are high class US citizens for whom 50 bucks isnt a half of monthly salary. I shut up in shame.
it actually makes sense in a cold statistical kind of way -
since the gw franchise started – 10 years ago, that generation of gamers have grown up….some moved on with careers and others are parents…..so my guess would be they are looking for next generation gamers. It would be a logical approach to constantly look for new players rather than older players.
now while this may seem cold, it does seem logical
it would be nice though if they grew into a family type game, where the past generations pass this on to their kids / next generation.
I’d also hate to say it, but it seems that trying to recover some of the older players doesn’t seem to have a positive outlook because a whole ton of them already left….
some for the reasons I stated before, and others because they are trend gamers ….that go for the newest game of the moment.
It would be nice though if anet took a heritage type approach while looking for next gen gamers, it would seem that’s what nintendo has done, ie – mario bros, i’m quite sure many of today’s mario bro players, have parents that played the first mario bros or donkey kong.
the rpg genre in general is a heritage type game ….as the first rpg game was dungeons and dragons everything after has been modeled around that ‘adventure / chance / strategy ’ concept. the rpg genre is very very rich in culture, it’s more than just adventuring and pvp for that matter……it’s a mix of war gaming and role playing – dating back to pencil and paper gaming.
and ironically enough, the pvp aspect of rpg gaming is in fact a very social aspect of the genre, no different than playing card games. PVE is actually a form of solitaire, and pvp is a game of poker, or gin rummy. you don’t socialize playing solitaire even if you filled a room of 50 people playing solitaire at the same time.

3 maps, a new class, new talents and – YAY!!! – completely free character slot!!!
Correction: An unknown number of maps (but at least 2), each with 3 biomes.
Also, you forgot: adventures, masteries, new skins, future living story updates, guild halls and ‘challenging group content’ (whatever that turns out to be).
keep at it then. best luck to you too, cause i really really don’t get the impression you’re the majority.
Oh I do since a huge number of topics here are about complaining about the price and how the veterans where treated unfair and that is in spite of the mods merging them like crazy.
Yes i have completely missed the point that you are high class US citizens for whom 50 bucks isnt a half of monthly salary. I shut up in shame.
I’m sorry we’re to blame for you living in a kittenhole country.
Yes i have completely missed the point that you are high class US citizens for whom 50 bucks isnt a half of monthly salary. I shut up in shame.
Way to make assumptions.
Besides, your problem doesn’t seem to be the price/content ratio, it seems to be the price itself. Which was not what your first post said.
Go team up with the others who think 50$ is too much. You’re not alone in this. For now, that’s how things are, but maybe that changes. But you might want to rethink making passive-aggressive posts about things when you mean something entirely different.
Edit: CobaltSixty isn’t much better, though ôO I hope you do realise how ignorant that sounds.

If these players you pigeonhole are that loyal, why wouldn’t they be pre-purchasing? A truly “loyal” player (a strange concept in a no sub model where they’ve given out as much as we’ve given back) would surely pre-purchase between now and launch and get the slot?
Also, isn’t this discussion already taking place in enough threads? They only get merged eventually, so why not post there where the devs want them to be for easy access?

Its 3 biomes not 3 maps, we have no clue how many maps there are.

unless I missed some post by arenanet actually we dont know that each map has all 3 biomes in it, thats something people came up with as far as I know not Arenanet. Infact from what I have seen this is likely not the case. there are plenty of videos showing the upper canaopy and an abyss under that. Even in the beta people who feel down got teleported up not landed on the ground and then had the ability to go under ground like you’d expect if each map had all 3 biomes.
Seems to me like its not going to be 3 biomes per map but rather seperate maps for seperate biomes.
Here where I live 50$ would buy 2 good Pizzas or 3 cheaper ones, so yeah prices is VERY relative.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)
Even in the beta people who feel down got teleported up not landed on the ground and then had the ability to go under ground like you’d expect if each map had all 3 biomes.
I’m pretty sure that is because the underground biome was not included in the beta.

I’m not sure, it seems to be implied though:
Initial map design coalesced around the concept of “biomes,” or levels of terrain, each with its own flora, fauna, and gameplay opportunities. From the towering heights above the jungle canopy down to the root-riddled depths below the surface, each map in the Heart of Maguuma focuses on vertical as well as horizontal exploration. […] Every biome is loaded with content and incentives to explore the levels above, below, and beyond, providing unprecedented levels of gameplay density.

I’m pretty sure that is because the underground biome was not included in the beta.
its not just the underground biome, I mean naturally there needs to be a ground level before an underground level. Neither the map or what visually could be seen suggests there was anything like that. And lets not forget there was a ton of verticality in that map already. Can you imagine maps being 2x-3x as high? (suberainain level requires its own verticality and ground level isnt generally perfectly flat either though for ground level you probably could get away with limited verticality hence my 2x-3x)
But None of what I just said means you’re wrong. You’re right its in deed possible there was more vertical space that simply wasnt included in the beta. Though personally I dont think thats the case.
The beta only let you play in certain parts of the map. And this makes it sound like most, if not all maps will have the three layers.
Kaerleikur @ Elonaspitze
They just said that all the versions (including the standard version) will include a character slot.
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/pre-purchase-community-address/

Yes it is in my case for 50$ I can buy 7 large pizza of 38 cm and that if it is a good one.
They said veterans will get that slot if they prepurchase, and not everyone on purchase of HoT, after launch included.
They said veterans will get that slot if they prepurchase, and not everyone on purchase of HoT, after launch included.
That’s their problem then.
imo , what backfired on them was making the game lower cost …..sure you can call it a 3 year old game …but the truth is , the engine was constantly updated ….so it’s an uptodate game.
Had they done that, selling the core game for 49.99 and giving the expansion pack for free would have had a better reception.
But since they devalued the core game because of the “Time made it old” illusion, it seems like less of a bargain. If you consider the man hours put into keeping the game updated with new content, the core engine is in fact very up to date. – else we’d still have old problems. just like an old game bought on CD after it gets finalized – then the ‘old’ perception would be correct. But gw2 is an ongoing effort.
when and if they make gw 2.1 – ie 64 bit dx 12 – they should never devalue it again. sale bargains, yes, depreciate no. perception is everything. it’s the difference between a tree and a door :p

What they should not do is trying to nickel & dime us with such underhanded tactics like that character slot story.
Before a-net played by the book – if xpac has new professions, players buying it get matching amount of slots to test drive them. Simple, logical, no one died of poverty over there cause they did it.
Today we get this. If we give them an inch today, they’ll take a mile tommorow (next x-pac), mark my words.
well, i have to agree with that …in an abstract way …..to us …it looks like nickel and diming …to them it’s keeping up with the rising costs of running a business.
rather than ‘myself’ say nickel and diming….I’d rather say transparency to avoid bad perceptions and conspiracy theories……I’d rather hear …“OMG” the local electric company is charging us 30 percent more to keep our servers online, and " i cant find a decent IT guy for less than 80k a year and we need 3 of them!! ahhh " than watch them come up with all sorts of sales strategies trying to cover that extra rise in operating costs.
Let’s just say, their electric company is not going to lower the cost, or have bundle sales,to keep the anet servers online, because their generators are 20 years old lol
(edited by Ricky.4706)
The core game has no value. What they were selling prior to HoT wasn’t just the core game, it was the heroic edition. The heroic edition’s bonus rewards alone had a $20 gem store value.
What they’re doing with the pre-purchase is simple. Would you rather pay $10 for a character slot, or save $10 later? 3rd party retailers will no doubt be selling the game for a lower price around or after launch. It always happens. If you were going to buy a character slot anyways however, that $10 is the most you can expect to save for the next ~6 months. At that point, a special edition will likely be announced to keep the price high (like the heroic edition) or they’ll just drop it to $39.99. About a year after that, the price will drop another $10. Finally, the price will be reset with a new expansion and the cycle repeats.
I have a friend who basically only wants HoT for a Revenant and already has a character slot waiting. I put it simply, since you’re going to play Fallout 4 anyways, and it’s releasing around the same time/just after HoT is, simply play that instead. When you’re done, HoT will be on sale. (for perspective, they’re a very casual player, have never played in the level 80 zones and only want HoT to play a “death knight”)
“The core game has no value. "
totally and completely oblivious to all the man hours put into keeping it up to date.
today, i’ll defend anet – maybe tomorrow i’ll go back to defending vets ;p
I want a peaceful medium, because i enjoy the game and community. so I have something to say for everyone <3
(edited by Ricky.4706)
If a-net needs money (and i can see them desperate for it recently), they can do so by providing new content for sale. And they do – notice how gem shop suddenly went into turbo mode, especially with Black Lion Ticket skins sets.
But if you cut out something that should be common sense basic part of expansion, and expect to charge extra money on it, then we’re in same cesspool as 1st day on disk DLC practices that make nearly every player on this planet go livid and curse the very ground the publisher walks on.
but they have added a ton of content, just because they didn’t flat out sell it, doesn’t mean it wasn’t new content without value. Perception, perception, perception! they devalued themselves. We didn’t devalue them, they gave us content and didn’t charge extra, so we took it free and didn’t see the value. They would have had to not update the engine at all since release, for people to “appreciate” ( increase in value ) the new content and changes they did add.
does a song lose value because it’s 20 years old ? no, some cd’s become collectors items.
but that’s different ? is it really ? or is it just a matter of perception. they haven’t added new instruments or lines to any old beatles songs and they are old. they should be free.

would be a riot if nothing else heh!!

At 1 million $ each.
if they sold limited copies of expansions at 100 dollars each, you can be sure they’d sell out in minutes. only 1000. get them while they last.
test it – make a secret cow level….and sell it 100, only 1,000 copies ^.^
there is a reason legendary weapons are so expensive in the trading post.
