You’re not being cheated. Players made the choice to use up the five character slots that came with the core game. They then had to purchase additional slots to play the remaining classes. There’s no reason that the expansion was required to come with an additional character slot because of a new class.

This argument is kind of moot now that all veterans who pre-purchase the game get an additional character slot.

You are still being cheated. They are trying to force you to buy a product that doesn’t exist yet, for the price of a full game while you know it will be just an expansion. And you only get the free character slot if you pre-purchase, and otherwise you don’t.

Many people WILL need the extra character slot, so that raises the price from $50 to $60 to anyone that doesn’t pre-purchase.

Ask yourself, is $60 a reasonable price for an expansion? Many of the defenders assume that everyone should pre-purchase! Boy, I bet Anet really loves you all! That is exactly what they want! But what if you do not want to pre-purchase? What if you want to wait till the product is done, and perhaps wait for the reviews, and see if you like what you hear?

Perhaps you are one of those rare people that does not buy games on impulse? Do you get a free character slot? NO! It’s $60 bucks for you!

I’m not being cheated and the product does exist although it’s not complete. It’s no different than any pre-order. Most people would fall under the pre-purchase umbrella anyway as they would have purchased the game ahead of time in order to play it once the servers updated to allow access. How many veteran players pre-ordered GW2? Surely they must have been cheated as the game didn’t exist at that time…

Yes, it does raise the price to those that want to play revenant, don’t have any remaining character slots, and choose not to pre-purchase. Also keep in mind that the pre-purchase ends once the expansion is released so you have until then to purchase the expansion. Players will usually have as much information as possible by then to make an informed decision as to whether the expansion is worth the cost. It’s no different than GW2 or any other game for that matter.

Based on what I have seen so far, I decided it was worth the $50. Many other people felt the same way and pre-purchased the game too. If people want to wait until after release to purchase the expansion then they’ll going to have to spend the extra $10 for the character slot if they don’t have any open ones. The thing is that Anet has announced well in advanced about this so those players have ample time to decide before then.

I don’t buy games on impulse. In fact, I rarely buy them anymore and only stick with certain series of games. Pre-purchasing a game is not the same as buying on impulse. Buying on impulse would be purchasing the expansion without any thought into it. Some players likely did buy on impulse while others knew or decided right after it was announced that they would buy it.

Don’t forget that your $50 buys you not only HoT release content, but all subsequent content (future updates) released for the expansion, as well.

Regardless, there is no stipulation (other than Beta access, refunds and possibly character slots) that anyone must pre-purchase.

Good luck.

Fwiw, I know that if a veteran prepurchases they get the extra slot. I know the wording says “If … prepurchase … slot.” However, it does not say definitively that those who wait until after release will not get a slot. This point, I believe, is left unclear so that they can offer a slot with purchase at/after launch if that looks to be better for their business, while removing one of the barriers to prepurchase right now. Whether they extend the slot offer will likely depend on how many fence-sitters and prospects raise the issue later — and how negatively sales are impacted by that dissatisfaction.

Those initial 8 classes and 5 character slots came with the original game. I already paid for those. The expac comes with a single, new class, which is not possible to play for most existing players without deleting one of their existing characters.

Once again, this is like buying a new car and the salesman not giving you any wheels on the second car because your first car already came with wheels.

This ^ for all the white knights to read and more importantly, comprehend! It can’t be stated any more clearly or logically than this. HoT is a separate purchase from the original GW2 game, which we did already pay for. Those 8 classes and 5 character slots were bought and paid for a long time ago…they have absolutely nothing to do with this current purchase. Stop trying to refer back to a previous purchase, to try to excuse what they are cheating us on, in this current expected purchase. For this price, this should be a functional product right out of the “box”. The car example fits perfectly. The product you buy should be fully functional, no matter who the buyer is. Whether you bought a previous product from them or not, you should still be able to fully utilize this new product without having to buy extra from them. It is exactly like expecting someone to buy a new car and not including enough wheels to drive it…just because they bought a previous car. ANET needs to make a choice, either this is an expansion (lower the price and omit the character slot) or this is a full product (include full product benefits).

The car example fails for reasons that I had already stated. Examples of not getting the keys/tires for the car would apply to the core game and not the expansion. The car and the core game are the same with an expansion being an extension of that.

I could use a dozen other analogies to keep proving you wrong but it still wouldn’t change the core point, which is that, by itself, the whole of the expansion is not playable by itself without spending additional money, deleting an existing character and using a character slot i’ve already paid for, or paying for a non-existent product and doing Anet’s QA for them for free.

IMO this is shady business practise and shows Anet doesn’t think very highly of its customer base. It’s only that gamers tend to be young & naive in a business sense that they don’t realise they’re being blantantly ripped off; in the real world, a company that tried to sell products whose basic functionality required hidden extra costs would be subject to unfair trading claims in this jurisdiction in which i live.

What makes HoT worth $50?

Nothing.

Keep in mind ArenaNet has seeing declining profits, and that they invested a lot in the China release, which was a failure. They’re now releasing an overpriced expansion in order to make up for the money they have lost, but this is clearly a move to help them, not for the benefit of their players.

This.

I’d argue the base game has been a failure for me personally as well – in 3 years i’ve seen close to zero updates in WVW, which is the only part of the game IMO worth playing. All the Living Story content has been absolute crap as far as i’m concerned.

Class updates & changes have been glacially slow and ineffective – case in point, my Ele has had the same core spec for 3 years due to the barest minimum of effort devoted to balancing.

I’ve been willing to tolerate this insofar as I realise many other players find LS content worthwhile but this recent departure of Anet into outright deception and blatantly ripping us off to the tune of $50 for a lightweight expansion where we’re expect to pay another $10 just to play the new class has gone over the top.

Anet has joined the shadiest of shady companies with their recent cheap tactics, price gouging of existing players to fund new players, and seemingly deliberate double-charging for the core game.

Future content updates can’t be HOT-exclusive or they’d be betraying all the owners of the core game. ie: you won’t need the expac for all future content.

Not to mention IMO living story content isn’t worth paying for.

Been thinking it over, but looking at the whole picture, I’m thinking the game is increasingly moving in a direction I do not enjoy. I loathe the NPE, I can’t STAND playing new characters anymore. I really and truly hate the dodge mechanic and other twitch aspects of the game, and am physically unable to do much of it, which increasingly bars me from parts of the content (living story 2 has achievements I simply CANNOT physically manage). I loathe Dry Top and Silverwastes because they’re grindy and boring.

And then I look at the expansion. I’ve seen beta, and what I saw looked like more twitch, more grind. Add to this the whole debacle of a fairly expensive prepurchase without knowing even half of what the expansion will be about. Add to this essentially making people PAY for beta testing (seriously, ONLY in the gaming industry…). Add to this the whole controversy around extra character slots (which in my opinion ought to be something EVERYONE buying the expansion pre OR post launch gets).

Strong feelings of ‘meh’ here.

Yeah, at what point did we start accepting this?

Add to this the whole controversy around extra character slots (which in my opinion ought to be something EVERYONE buying the expansion pre OR post launch gets).

This is my point exactly. EVERYONE should get one free extra character slot, regardless if they register before or after release.

A free character slot that is only handed out if you register BEFORE release, is not truly a free extra character slot.

The character slot is a hidden cost. The price isn’t $50, it’s $60 bucks. There should not be any conditions attached to getting it. You need a free character slot to play the new profession, so if we are paying for the new profession, then we should get a slot to play it. That’s like selling a car and asking an extra $10 bucks for the keys.

B: These forums are meant not just for player to player interaction, but for customers to communicate with Arena Net. We are using the forums EXACTLY for what they are meant. If customers are not satisfied, and are feeling ripped of, THIS is where they should raise their voices, and no where else.

Here’s a thought, instead of trying to start yet another emotion-laden tear-jerker of a thread in a sea of crocodile tears how about you actually go to a little research of your own? Watch videos, watch reviews,

Hold up! Lets stop right there!

What videos? What reviews? Very little has been revealed of HOT so far. Heck, we don’t even have a release date yet.

And yet, we MUST pre-purchase and register before release, or we don’t get a “free” character slot. They encourage us to buy the game without information.

I think the pre-purchase announcement happened so early as a “counter” to the FF14 expansion. Now players that watch both games have to consider them both and choose more wisely. Probably choose the expansion that revealed nearly everything it contains BEFORE requesting money from the players, but maybe Anet thought it would cause some hesitation too.

The pre-purchase will last until close to the release of the game, much like pre-purchases for all games work, I doubt Anet will break the trend here. Although they started asking for our money now you can wait and pay them when they release more info, info that you are most interested in. For example I won’t spend anything on HoT until they reveal what “Challenging Group Content” is plus the rest of the Elite specs (mostly interested in Ele/Thief)

Nobody is forcing you to buy NOW. There is still a looong time until release.

Looks like it is only available for those that have purchased and activated a Standard Edition of HoT.

Which makes a certain sense. People are upset when they are allowed to purchase items/services they can not use (additional Bank Tabs when already at the limit, etc.).

Or…if you think it should be available for you in the Gem Store, and it is not, contact the CS Team for assistance using the ‘Support’ link above/below and ‘Submit a Request’.

Your logic is faulty OP.

Let’s pretend I spent $60 for 500 hours of gameplay and I’d have to pay $50 for say 250 hours of gameplay.

Obviously the first game has more value than the second. But then what if the other games that I could get only give me 100 hours for $50.

The problem is, you can’t judge on absolutely value. You can only judge on comparative value.

And of course, you can judge on what comes out for free that you’d also be getting for that $50. Just as you’re including some stuff that came out after release in your first consideration.

You may not believe you can get is much, so it behooves you to wait. I believe I’ll get a lot of playtime. Whether it’s as much or not is not relevant. I’m happy to get 250 hours playtime out of $50. That would stretch my entertainment dollar quite far.

But you know, it’s all about perspective.

You may want to look up the definition of cheated. Paying a price for something ahead of time is not being cheated. I’ve seen games, music, books, and movies that you can pre-order but have no release dates. You also cannot base what you have seen so far as to whether the expansion will be lightweight as you call it.

Those initial 8 classes and 5 character slots came with the original game. I already paid for those. The expac comes with a single, new class, which is not possible to play for most existing players without deleting one of their existing characters.

Please do not argue about business sense and what happens in the real world because you do not understand it. If Anet is such a shady company, why do you continue to support them by playing the game and having a presence on the forums?

You surely don’t have to tell me what I have to expect…
I’ve no problems at all for buying slots if needed with real money, I prepurchased Ultimate Edition on day one…

Just saying that Anet rewarded last time their beta players with something, they did it also the last time before with a few digital rewards worth basically a chara slot…
So it is absolutely not out of question, that they maybe could be so nice, if Anets feels for being so kind, if they could let keep their beta testers the slots with the beta charas being deleted at the end of all the betas, once HoT gets released.

Participating in a Beta isn’t just only playing a game, if you participate seriously, if you documentate all kinds of bugs that you may find and send them over to Anet.

However, why do I just hear jealousy out of your post, if Anet would gift at the end of all the beta when HoT gets release the beta testers that 1 slot with that people may have participated over multiple smaller to bigger beta tests to help Anet for “free”, cause professional quality/game testers would cost Anet money, whereas players in open betas help for basically free, without costing real money just for the chance to play and experience something of an upcoming game’s content a bit earlier, than everybody else.

Anet would have to do any open betas at all, if they would want and woudl have the money for it, Naet coudl make all of the required tests ect. completely inhouse with professional game and quality testers that costs money each hour…

But there are also some things, that they can’t do ,for that you need masses of players to test somethign out, for stress tests… way too costy to do somethign like that inhouse.
The sole reason, why open betas exist, cause of the things for that you need masses of players that would be way to expensive for a game developer to make inhouse tests with professional quality testers with on lage scale, when you can get the masses that you need for free by using your playerbase.

Isn’t so, as if it never has happened before in the past in game development of MMOs, that beta testers received at the end of the betas the chara slots as a thank you for helping out. We will surely see a few more beta tests before HoT gets released as the add on is still far away from being released, among that surely some more stress tests.

Anet surely won’t become instantly bancrupt, if they give their beta testers that one slot as a thank you gift at the end of the betas when the addon freshly gets released and ANet gets tons of money incomings from the sales then from the people who buy at release day same as liek anet becomes not bancrupt from it when they rewarded playersover the last tests with gemstore stuff (me as beta tester included) and I really appreciate these thigns, cause they show that anet holds value to our testings for them and that they don’t see it as like you that we are “just playing only a game”, despite the last beta tests beign only very short and sadly too short to make any effective efforts at bug finding and…cause that beta felt with it short duration more like only giving those beta testers that got a portal to maguuma some kind of “first impression”, but as i know ANet they still used all of that to get somehow some kind of new metrics and information out of all of this, and be it just how the majority of us reacted on what wewere able to test in those few hours in for many of us the midst of the night lol

Personally I like the idea behind sub classes ~ quoted from Chris Whiteside

How do you propose they sort out the people that really help out in the beta from those that just go in for a sneak peek and never bother testing and reporting and suggesting?

You get in the beta by prepurchasing. You get a slot from prepurchasing. The additional beta slot is mechanically there to separate your beta actions from your live account (though I’ve heard using transmute charges on a beta alt will deplete your live account charge supply, but it’s not supposed to). It’s a necessary part of the beta access process, not a promise of a later freebie.

Also, anything you do in beta is wiped before the game goes live, so there is no need to retain the slot. If you feel this somehow cheats you, you don’t understand how betas work.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to tie a gift to how actively you played the beta and reported things. That would lead to people reporting dumb stuff, like reporting as a bug “leaves not green enough” to fill the bug reporting “quota” in order to qualify for the gift. A beta already assumes that you will actively report any bugs as a means to make the game better for when it comes out. Offering gifts for this can backfire too easily as people will start expecting gifts before they will report.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Unfortunately they barely know to a certain extent of what happened in LS season 1 and the latest version of LS season 2 is the last episode. If you want the full season, you have pay money for it. Couldn’t they just bundle in the LS season 2 at a discounted price with HOT? They’re already paying money for HOT and getting the base game free, why not throw in the LS with it?

Necro Jesus is a thing apparently
The Zerker Bunker meta is the biggest bug in the game

most mmo xpacs give you huge maps, and things to do. anet tries to make you think a free toon slot for a new class is something to behold, when other mmo xpacs give those to you FREE.

and this xpac only opens up 3 areas in maguuma, out of the HUGE tyrian world atlas. this maguuma isnt even maps, it is areas because they are much smaller, like dry top.

and after leaving the broken personal stories to linger rotting like no one cares abt the game for nearly 3yrs, wtf makes you think this game/xpac is worth even $20, let alone $50….?

Never got bored with an MMO faster than GW2. Took 4mos.

Behold, the prophet of HoT, privvied to information the rest of us can only dream of.

Seriously, raging about price and throwing out some completely unverified “facts” as justification only makes you look like a kitten .

No mmo i have heard of has charged its player base a full games price for the fraction of its content and yes this is relevant…

HoT is priced at release at $10 less than GW2 was at release. WotLK was priced at $10 less than its base game was priced at release. It offered 10 levels as opposed to the original 60; 9 zones as opposed to two continents worth of zones in the base game. It offered one new class, but no extra character slots. There were workarounds to try DK, but for some it involved either deleting an alt or trying DK on a different server.

HoT is offering multiple zones (has to be two or more) that have three tiers. We haven’t been shown the rest of HoT yet, and I agree that if the only content is what’s been shown it’s light. However, let’s not pretend that any base-price-minus-$10 expansion has offered as much as its base game.

Finally… should the base price include a slot to make use of the new profession? It would be nice. However, we don’t know whether the existing offer of a free slot will be extended if resistance to HoT’s price continues after release with that rationale as a reason.

Interesting article in relationship with topic

By Kelley Robertson :
http://www.businessknowhow.com/marketing/worth.htm

" How to Sell Value Instead of Cost "

" Most salespeople know that they need to sell their product’s or service’s value to their prospects rather than the price. However, making that transition, especially when your customer asks outright “how much is this going to cost?” is tricky. Here’s how you can answer that question and get your prospects focused on what your product is worth instead of its price".

" How much will this cost? "

“Many sales people shudder when faced with this question. They stutter, stammer, and hem and haw. This is where the rubber hits the road and when the prospect will either give them the green light to move forward with the sale or say, “thanks but no thanks”. Far too often, sales people feel uncomfortable talking about the price of their offering fearing that their prospect will put the brakes on the buying decision if the price of their product or service is perceived as being too high. They unconsciously flinch-mentally or physically-when responding and this hesitation is quickly noticed by the buyer" .

….

“I remember talking to a prospect about coaching services and one of his first questions was, “How much do you charge?” While the price of coaching is relatively consistent from client to client, each person has different motives for utilizing this type of service. I knew that stating my fee too soon would likely cause my prospect to balk so I said, " It would be unfair for me to state a price without knowing more about your particular situation ".

“HoT: price and is it worth it?”

" Prices Are Based on Value, Not Cost "

Obviously: No!!

I believe they said they don’t have a system in place to hand those out yet and more information would be forthcoming. Give it a few weeks.

You should only have the extra slot from purchasing the deluxe or ultimate, the other additional one will be gifted soon™ because they need to get a system in place to award those out to people accurately and efficiently.
