Hey was wondering what you guys thought of the ending of HoTs (not the fight)
Feels like its lacking a bit of closure. Like you kill Traherene then “THE END”. At least Zhaitan had like a party and what not.

Please leave out any “omfg GRIND/masteries/omg long boss” comments.

HoT is a continues to show Anet suck at making end boss. the design was ugly… i mean some of the 1990s final fantasy game have better “mid boss” than anet’s “final boss”…. lol!

the mechanic this time is interesting but however it too buggy to enjoy it. I have a portal spawn in the middle of the air and I fell trying to reach it. but that not the point, the point is it LOOK STUPID. how is anet going to attract customer with ugly bosses when most player decide if they will buy a game based on LOOKS?

storywise. it is ok. still ok.

Boss was mechanically fun but the boss’s appearance and the environment was pathetically bland. He looks like a generic mordrem, not an Elder Dragon. Why couldn’t we have something like the Mouth of Mordremoth or mr. Vine Dragon from the cinematic? Even saving the Shadow of the Dragon and using some generic creature in its place for S2 would have been better.

The ending was super abrupt as well. Mordy is dead, end. No closure, it just stops.

Hello everyone,

What do you all think aboud the ending in the story? I was hoping for these things:

An epic fight against mordremoth.
An ending cutscene where everyone is cheering but also honoring Eir at her grave in Hoelbrak.
Seeing the egg hatching.

I’m happy i bought HoT, but at the same time i feel sad about the story ending. It had to be more epic in my opinion, not just fighting mordremoth mind :/

It was nice that they actually bothered to make killing Mordy more than just poking him with swords and fairies, even if it ended up just being poking him inside of the Dream. It always felt underwhelming how easy and simple it was to kill Zhaitan. I was expecting some sort of big deus ex towards the end, like oh hey the Forgotten had an ancient magical spell to bind the Elder Dragons, etc. Like what we got in Mass Effect with the Reapers. Killing an existential threat on the apocalyptic scale of an Elder Dragon with just martial ability is a tad bit underwhelming. Hopefully they expand on this “all dragons have a weakness” plot further, and each expansion’s plot can be driven by finding this weakness.

Additionally, can we get some further explanation for the repercussions of each Dragons death will have? We have Tequatl getting a power up a few years ago, and now we have a massive magical energy explosion from Mordremoth. Obviously killing Elder Dragons does something related to magic. Does this mean all the other Elder Dragons will be stronger now? What about environmental impacts? And so on.

We face the humongous Mouth of Mordremoth(who for Mordremoth serves the same purpose as the Mouth of Zhaitan does for Zhaitan) in the final meta event at Dragon’s Stand and that was an epic Raid Boss fight.

The Mouth of Mordremoth was a Dragon Champion large enough to serve as Mordremoth’s top Champion and serve as Mordremoth’s own avatar in the physical world while he himself lurks in the Dream serving as the mind of the Mouth of Mordremoth which can regenerate as long as Mordremoth lives in the Dream.

Well having finally got through it I can say a few things [SPOILERS]:

I was surprised to find it was the end of the story – I thought the pacing of the initial part of the story up till Rata Novus was much better. After this I thought it rushed ahead way too fast and all of a sudden it’s like “oh, ok so this is it?”
The fight with Mordremoth itself was very tedious. But then I hate pve bullet sponges in general so I’m not the target audience for these “boss” fights…
The glider section bugged out so I had to restart a few times. But once the gliding worked, it was a relatively easy, but extremely tedious fight – ie a test of stamina/endurance and not skill.
- the scenery was as usual stunning. I’m constantly in awe of the environments the Anet team is able to create. Amazing.
Overall I thought it was a good concept of entering the Dream, and well done despite me not enjoying bullet sponge boss fights.
Sad to see Trahearne die – it seems his voice actor did the best job right here at the end. I actually like his character. Looking forward to the next LS to see what happens in the future.
Edit: for the record I soloed the end hence why I might have found it tedious. I imagine it might be faster in a group.

I’ll have to do the Dragon’s Stand full event to get a more epic feel, then. Not that the Mordy fight was a bad fight, it was just too fast. (I say this but must admit that it also felt much easier to me because I joined a pug and we had the best Ele ever who soloed Mordy down from 3/4 health while the rest of us stood helplessly on the balcony watching).

The “too fast,” though, means too early in the story. This is the big bad. It was supposed to be harder than Zhaitan and that took a very long time of gathering resources and information; that was far more satisfying except for the simple fight at the very end. So now we get a fairly epic fight (albeit in a small confined space with a relatively small toad boss instead of a jungle-sized dragon) but we didn’t have to do very much story to get to it at all.

I’d have liked a much longer story buildup, culminating in a select team finding its way through a rift of Mind and fighting through ever changing landscapes against foes both solid and amorphous whilst the rebuilt Pact forces pounded away outside to help distract the foe. We in the small team would see occasional vast ripples and light bursts or something to indicate a strong blow from outside, and use those moments to do extra anti-Mordy mechanics.

At least, that’s one idea I have on tweaking this particular idea on how to slay Mordremoth. I had been hoping for a massive army assault across all the terrain, ending in devastating the ecosystem of the jungle so we could feel super guilty but it was the only way to weaken Mordremoth enough to take him out. Maybe using the poison injectors developed from Tower of Nightmares. (Come to think of it, nothing’s happened to Kaz yet from getting thorn-poked, what’s with that?). We could Agent Orange the jungle. Then maybe go deliver the KO in the Mind.

Also, I bet a lot of “I want to kill Trahearne” people are very happy now.

Of course I believe there are plans for ongoing stories in LS so maybe it will turn out we didn’t actually slay Mordremoth. Despite the whole “I can feel him gone from my mind” speech.

All of this isn’t to say this was bad. The pacing is all I really take issue with; the writing and voice acting and mechanics and art were all very nice, and the fights used what we’ve been learning (at least, updrafts were key at the end).

The final fight against Mordremoth was great and the cinematic was pretty nice (raising new questions again ). But after that I was a bit disappointed: I just came to the outpost were I started the mission. Braham, Marjory, Canach, Caith and Rytlock just stood there the same way as before and just had some different text. Taimi, Logan, Zojja, Rox and Kas where not there and I have no idea where they could be (ok except for Taimi). So I thought that maybe something happened with the egg and went to check on it. But nothing had changed there either.
So I have to conclude for myself: Great and exciting Story. A little short but that was ok. Stupid NPC-AI (during the missions) and an unsatisfying ending after an awesome Bossfight.

It’s clearly not the end of the story. There’s still lingering things most likely to be filled out in the next season(s).

The egg being one obviously, and possibly the stoylines from the raids.

I also chuckled at how many times the characters and player character mentioned how easy Zhaitan was compared to this dragon as if Anet is admitting their poor handling of it and trying to make it canon.

I did like the story, but it does weaken the threat of the dragons if all it takes is a Vulcan mind meld and sacrificing a couple of notable heroes. :P

It was very evidently rushed, which is a shame. Up until those last two or three chapters, the story was excellent – great pacing, events and reward. Then as soon as we discover that the Elder Dragons have a weakness, 3 chapters later and boom it’s over.

While the final chapter itself is better in gameplay mechanic to the Zhaitan fight (but not as epic in scale), I personally felt a little depressed once it ended – was that really it for Mordremoth?

I’m still doubting it even now, but hey, the rest of the expansion is incredible.

Like earlier posts, I liked the story up until the later parts; felt rushed. I liked the level design for many of the maps and story elements like ambushing. Felt like I was not gonna make it sometimes.
Blighted caithe portion was a fun one since you needed to think and not go in there blind. Just a note, there is an area that you can kitten that fight to 1/3 of enemy health by using a pet (clones in my case) with new non damage mechanic (since boss only targets you). However, not suggested cause if you do kill this way, the fight gets out of hand and boss recover 1/3 health. Just saying for those bosses you might want to add a way to kill pets if boss loses line of sight. Using a iBerserker + running around to not die was also a way this new mechanic fell short (Not practical tho).

For story, I was half expecting for us to get pushed back and have to run away from the heart with our tails between our legs. I was expecting no more trahearne at this point as well since it would give us a very good reason to gather up the scattered pact to do a strategic assault (I was expecting trahearne to become a lieutenant and injuring our crew as well, only to later cry as we had to put him down).

I think the story will indeed continue into the living world and the raids tho. Here’s a thought that has been getting to me too: If Mordremoth could have planted himself in Trahearne, could he have also implanted on other major sylvari as a partition? In the vision part, we see many multiplications of Zojja and Logan too, could a parasite also be implanted into them? Could another copy of Faolain emerge to take up the helm of the elder dragon? I’m also thinking starcraft and the zerg here with the overmind/kerrigan where another entity can control or produce more as the copy ability was highlighted.

honestly my friend and I ain’t that hardcore, but we figure out how to get to the last boss by “gaming it”, this is what happens when you design a flawed system based on grinding. player who are “lucky” and grind on the right map will end up completing everything faster and with less work.

then more player will follow on those “path to completion” and the map will feel even more empty. i wish the kept the heart system which would have cause players to spread themselves out rather then to camp forever at the place they can get the most exp.

I agree that the grind fest is and will break the flow of the game, make it stressful for player who feel like they are slowing down their friends as they level slower. especially since there is like so many “gate” in between story that completing them becomes a prayer that the next story isn’t gated. it just silly.

Overall it was pretty kitten good if you ask me. Only problems I had was how short the story felt (For an expansion) and how easy It was to beat Mordremoth.

We discovered his weakness way too quickly and easily if you ask me.

The final battle was awesome as was the music but I was kind of hoping to see Mordremoth as this gargantuan dragon like the ones in the concept art.

I’m glad they let me cut him though.

Looking forward to living world season 3. Hopefully it won’t be sub-par.

Manimarco Devil.1790

The ending is supposed to be kind of two fold. Just like most of the other parts of the story are “supposed” to be coupled with the dynamic event of each zone. For example, when you enter Tarir you not only just meet the Exalted but technically helped them power up Tarir and defended it from the octovine. Similarly after finding Rata Novus, the pact has that whole chak event to do something to leyline? (didn’t really do that one).

In Mordremoth’s case the attack is from the mind while the pact is attacking him from the outside. The outside attack is the entire Dragon’s Stand meta event. While the event does require large numbers and coordination, the ending battle is pretty awesome. (they should really bump the loot rewards though as I’m not sure its really worth doing outside leveling for masteries.)

So even if you do not really like the “mind” battle, the pact assault more than makes up for it in my opinion.

Your experience of story pacing summed up mine perfectly – excellent up to Rata Novus then it felt like I skipped ahead somehow to the bottom of the map of Dragon Stand.

That coupled with the lack of ‘epicness’ of the final boss made it overall feel somewhat wanting. I get it that his body is the whole jungle but some resemblance to what the trailer suggested would’ve been nice.

Overall the design of the zones are amazing. I particularly loved the design of Mordremoth’s spiral ‘backbone’ leading to his heart and ultimately to his mind. Well done to the team you really have set the bar high.

the spine part was great, if you know anything about biology, that is the part that instantly hits you about what mordremoth really is:

it’s not just a spiral, it’s a double helix joined by thorns.

it’s DNA.

THAT is the Heart of Thorns, and it’s even in the logo of the expansion: a dragon in a spiral.

that shape perfectly sums up mordremoth, it isn’t just a dragon, it is the underlying pattern of all mordrem, their mental DNA.

the second I saw that helix, everything clicked. if mordremoth is DNA, then all plant based biology in the jungle is mordremoth’s body.

and echoing everyone else: the ending was VERY abrupt.

you stab trahearne, get a cutscene of glint’s egg absorbing the released ley energy, and… that’s it. no epilogue, nothing, even visiting the egg after doesn’t show any changes.

I mean, we got an afterparty for killing zhaitan, we don’t even get a memorial service for Eir, Scruffy, and Trahearne, as well as all of the others we lost?

we just get dumped out onto a rock and we WP away with no fanfare or even acknowledgement. I hope the first episode of LS3 is soon and it gives us a decent epilogue.

The ending was rushed. I dare say even worse than Zhaitan.
The story missions until the end were awesome. The pacing was great. And suddenly it ended. I was expecting at least 15 more chapters between chapter 14-15 and chapter 16. Such a huge hole that could have been filled with awesome things.

The ending fight had nice mechanics somewhat but still felt a bit meh to me. I was actually expecting a lot more dialogue from Mordremoth. Seeing how he is an intelligent dragon and all. He could only say stuff like “OBEY ME, I AM THIS WORLD” and such. Even at the end when we are about to cut down Trahearne, he appears again and does it again “OBEY ME, I CAN’T BE DEFEATED” and…. dead

He could have provided a far better dialogue than that imo.

Was one of those “Is that it?” moments. I mean, what happened? Every story we’ve had so far has had a conclusion, yet nothing here. Very unfulfilling.

Stabby-stabbing Trahearne was worth its weight in gold, though. ANet knew he was considered a glory, story hogging salad, and gave him a dignified end. Bye bye, salad hogger.

The boss fight was very buggy and I completed it in a party. I died from a flying piece of debris on the airborne phase, though, and had to spend the rest of the fight (as the party leader) shouting random things while watching the others fight. Then the portals to stun Mordy didn’t work, so the group wiped. We go back in and the fight hadn’t entirely reset (yay us), but the dialogue starts again from the beginning. Very odd.

well get on a comfy pair of slippers and a warm mug of cocoa from your impaled buddy, because this is going to be a pretty complex story.

basically, she is THE single biggest driving force in the lore across all of GW2 and a good chunk of GW1.

a long time ago, a group of snake-people called The Forgotten figured out a way to grant dragon champions free will, and tried it on a champion of kralkatorrik called Glaust (basically the original Shatterer). this newly freed dragon named herself Glint and it turned out she could see the future.

she created a book called The Flameseeker Prophecies (yes, the same one people have glued onto a shield) which told of the downfall of another ancient race, The Mursaat. naturally the Mursaat were not too happy that they were going to get extincted by demons and used the Prophecies to cheat by making sure the events that were foretold didn’t happen (namely by killing the ones the Prophecies called “Chosen” and using their souls to keep the door to hell closed). that ended up failing because they didn’t expect one specific chosen to have plot armor on account of being the GW1 player character.

she also put in a series of countermeasures to ensure that when the dragons woke back up, the world would have a fighting chance: the first were The Exalted, humans who sacrificed themselves to do what you see in HoT, the second was the egg.

sadly, she ended up dying because logan wanted to get in jennah’s pants rather than stopping kralkatorrik murdering crystal dragon jesus, though considering she was able to see the future, she probably knew it was going to happen anyway, the master of peace was in on her plan and was trying to take the egg to Tarir, but season 2 of the living story happened and caithe got the egg instead.

as for why it was so important to get the sausage and Egg mcguffin to Tarir… we don’t know, it’s implied by the ending that the egg either contained the blast of ley energy safely (unlike what happened with zhaitan, where tequatl and the remaining risen got a power boost, and potentially made the other EDs stronger), or it has become the “new” elder dragon by absorbing mordremoth’s energy (in which case, the point of the Exalted is to be the worlds best babysitters and raise the new elder dragon to be not evil)

she’s also living in Rytlock’s head now, and fuelling some of his revenant powers (specifically herald skills)

Feels like its lacking a bit of closure.

Agree, it felt abrupt.

A warrior, a guardian, and an elementalist walk into an open field…
The Warrior turns to the guardian and says, “Did you hear something?”
Guardian replies, “No, but how’d the elementalist die?”

This, so much this. I hope this isn’t the end and they will add story during Raids release.

But if it is… Why would you even bother to call Mordremoth a dragon? It’s a cool idea to make enemy that basically IS the jungle, but please just don’t say it’s a dragon… cos it simply is not.

I would dig that if there was another encounter with Mord in form of the jungle dragon, to see this magnificent yet dangerous creature.

If we are to disregard how horrible the fight was, then this is my opinion.
I was expecting to see a giant elder dragon, and instead we get a midget mordrem on steroids… this actually made me cry.
(I’ve read that mordremoth is supposively not really physical in form, but rather just all of the jungle… but still though m8 come on :/ )
Everything about mordremoth has been insanely great up until somewhere around rata novus. that’s when it suddenly started to feel rushed as hell. once you finish the extremely bugged rox quest it just fails to impress, since the last chapters wet by too quick, and didn’t seem to have anything exciting (contrary to previous chapters of the expansion)
I think Anet realised halfway development that they were running out of time or something, the ending was so freaking sudden it was basically “oh, you killed mordremoth kthnxbai”. I expected some kind of celebration or closure at the very least.
As for the open ending, I’ll leave you with this thought: Maybe, juuuuuuust maybe, we could actually convince Anet to listen to our feedback (though we really need to be constructive about it then) and with any luck, they choose to bring a final battle against mordremoth somehow related to the egg. or they could simply update the final mission into a dungeon or something, and add an additional battle in which you fight him in his REAL form which is a giant dragon that will make everyone hyped to finally see mordremoth in his true and giant glory!

I don’t see it as an ending so much as a tie-in to whatever happens next.

I’m assuming (or perhaps hoping), given the pathetic and inconclusive state of mordremoths “death”, that he’s not actually dead. We still have the raid coming too.

Mordremoth was the opposite of Zhaitan. The fight itself was satisfying, but from a narrative point of view the lead up and defeat of mordremoth (or his avatar, as it is) was pretty underwhelming.
Zhaitan on the other hand had a great build up (the campaign in orr, starving and cornering him) and was really epic, but had an incredible lack luster fight.

The story was very rushed. I loved the attention to detail, and the ideas behind everything, it was just never really explored. At all.

The Zhaitan storyline was really rudamentary and rushed as well, but not to this extent. There I actually felt like exploring orr, and advancing my way trough his champion, weakening him and slowly getting to the conclusion. Not so much here. As other pointed out, story pacing was great up until the weakness part. After that it just drops the ball.

They should have made some of the meta events into singleplayer instances, so that we have an actual buildup – so that we feel like we are slowly making our way to Mordremorth, and regrouping the pact.
All of the meta events are so amazingly great, with a LOT of story stuff in them. The dialouge heavy nature is easy to miss in zergs.
Also, too bad the servers constantly crash, and you can’t do them when you want – usually end up in a bad overflow, or having to wait ages.

The great ideas and production value can’t save it from being way, wayyyy too rushed. We are never given an oportunity to actually sink our teeth into the lore.

I seriously hope they overhaul parts of this story, because it seems to me like verything needed to make it great is already there – just never fully used. And here’s to hoping LS3 is amazing as well.

TL;DR, the pacing drops the ball after the weakness mission, and the story rushes way too fast forward. It would benefit from some meta events being remade to be story instances too.

The endfight was really cool and an epilogue will come with the living story for sure (like the dragon bash festival).

But what I disliked was that we run 14 missions through the jungle to find our friends and to kill mordremoth. Story 15 we found our friends. Story 16 we killed mordremoth. Ubntil the last beat against him, I thought, that he will push us back. We must recover our forces with the help of the hylek, the asura lab and the exalted. But it finished suddenly
The end fight against mordremoths mouth was much cooler, cause it shows us the hard fight and all the forces we’ve collected for the final blow.

But all in all, this story is soooooo much better than the first story against zhaitan. Thank you

To anyone displeased that you do not actually fight a big dragon…

Play the dragons stand meta event, it is exactly that. I have a feeling the story ending would have been taken a lot better if players were forced to do that before the last mission.

The pacing was fine up until Rata Novus, after that, it felt rushed. In my opinion, more missions between Rata Novus and the Dragon’s Stand would have helped to better improve the pacing.

As for the ending, it did feel abrupt, but hey, at least Trehearne is dead—and by our hand too. As for Eir, it’s terrible that Eir died, but I guess it was foreshadowed from a mile away in the living story season 2.

All-in-all, I think the story’s ending, where we face off against Mordremoth was nice. Mind you, I wasn’t a fan of the flying bits, but I can live with it. Now if only we could get something like that for Zhaitan. Oh well, too bad there’s no time travel or major retconning on that one.

It was rushed because Mordremoth focused on bringing the leaders of our armies directly to him when he could have sent them to the Reed Bog and be safe.

Rata Novus only revealed that each Elder Dragon’s weakness was unique which gave us the logic we needed to target Mordremoth’s mind.

Mordremoth underestimated both the Heart and Mind of the Pact and died for it.

The final part was rushed because Mordremoth didn’t pay any attention to the fact that we just discovered he had a unique weakness(he can access Canach’s head even if he can’t control him and thus could see and hear what he did) and just straight up brought Zojia, Logan and Trehearne to Mordremoth’s very lair bringing about his demise when we went to rescue them.

Mordremoth didn’t take us seriously at all. He even mocked us right when we were about to give the final blow thinking we would be unwilling to kill Trehearne. Mordremoth underestimated our Minds more than he underestimated our Hearts.

The ending left me foremostly confused, feeling gutted and sad, it was so abrupt I had to do a double take, and I went through all of my story chapters to see if I missed something or if there was some secret unlockable that would provide a summary of what had just happened.

I had a vision of Braham (I would even take any other character from the party!) lost in thought somewhere in Hoelbrak if it was Braham or somewhere in the jungle, as our character walks up to him and asks if he is ok. Braham could say a single word or a sentence to either conclude or forebode.

It would be nice to hear something about the other characters too. Have made their peace what still troubles them? You don’t have to reveal spoilers but could offer hints of possible outcomes. I for one wanted to have a talk with Caithe for taking my dragon egg and have some story progression options! It saddens me we didn’t even get a glimpse of the others, not to mention the characters that we saved.

Anet you made me feel and fall in love with your characters so it would be nice to have something to either mourn or celebrate or feel anxious about, if it’s not over.

I was honestly surprised. I mean for the most part it felt like a leasurely stroll through dragon’s stand to get to Logan and zoja. I enjoyed fighting eir and cannach, and honestly while I want that big a fan of mordy’s mind form, I did like that he was a more involved boss fight than most others I came across, also liked the fact that when you beat his illusions, they came over to your side. And as far as trahearne dieing, I didn’t really like trahearne at all to begin with, but I did tear up a bit at having to kill him. I am very interested in seeing which dragon we go after next. I’m hoping we see eventually a true clash between two of the elders dragon’s like primordus vs jormag and we’re caught in the middle.

Overall, 6/10 for me. Liked the character development, liked the boss, but towards the end it felt just a little bit rushed.
