Want sub? Buy gems every month. Mission accomplished.
I’ve spent way more money on this than I had any right to.
(Bug fix?)
I just read a article that there is a theory that ESO going from subscricption to f2p was a smart business decision. On short they got a huge profit going subscription based for a couple of months and when the hype went away instead of keeping the subscription and losing costumers and money they went f2p and got a huge influx of new players and of course profit.
The point is they had the intention of going f2p from the start they just wanted to maximize profit.
Einstein said that if you can’t put it in two sentences, then you probably don’t have a firm enough grasp of the problem yet. Guess i don’t, cause i need three;)
The real problem of gw2 (and HoT along the way) is it’s extremely watered down.
It needs a sub. What does “watered down” mean? Both good and bad things.
If you divide time played by $ spent it’s just…well, no competition. This game rocks.
So cost wise it’s purchase price is greatly watered down over time. But if you recall the infrequent content drops of questionable sizes these past 3 years, once in blue moon balance patches and dumbing down of the game (NPE, trait changes #1 and recent abominations), there’s your negative watering down at it’s finest and the reason ppl discard trust torwards a-net and are not moving an inch till they get more information on what’s inside HoT.
So if anything the real problem is the B2P model. People may get great value for their buck, but i think it’s fair to say at least some of us need much bigger bang and would not mind paying bigger buck if we were to get proper value for it. Rest of ppl are fine with smaller bang like the one we have, but not for this kinda buck.
So i suggested it once and will again – consider optional subscription for players. One that frees them of gemstore trappings. Skins obtainable ingame, via challenges with new content, rather then behind gemshop paywall. Same for those perma logging tools. You got sub up, you got your chance to get them ingame.
P2P games don’t fail because this payment model is bad – it’s the best of all, and both WoW and FF XIV prove it.
They fail becuase you need a good game to make it work. Luckily GW2 (if this stupidity of dumbing down everything stops) can defend that title with considerable ease, as long as content is delivered in sizable chunks and proper frequency.
Sorry nope. They would probably get suede for false advertising, not to mention miss selling. People.got angry over the whole HoT pre purchase. Could you imagine the fire from this? Not to mention the fall out of the bad press. It would probably kill new players cold.
Well can’t argue with that point. Had they not flapped their beaks about not being P2P and that being a selling point…
Now we’re gonna see more stuff in gem store (that could’ve been ingame) to push their sales cause making new content costs and there’s not sub to solve the problem without nickling & diming. Meanwhile it’s arid desert in terms of new zones to explore till HoT drops, fortunatelly that’s right around the corner a.k.a. “when it’s ready”.
I hate cash shops so much.

If they had not flapped their beaks about not being P2P, they would not have as much business as they have now. Out of all the popular MMOs, GW2 was the only one designed from the ground-up to be B2P. A lot of people play this because it’s not P2P. I you want this game to be P2P, then I’m afraid you have set yourself up for disappointment in the grand delusion that P2P guarantees a stream of content.

Siege of Orgrimmar says hello and wants to remind you that even when you have a P2P game, you can have over a year without new content.
I hate cash shops so much.
Here’s the thing about the GW2 cash shop. It’s not pay to win. There are many people who don’t use the cash shops at all. If you feel compelled to buy items in the cash shop, it’s due to your own lack of self-restraint.
Personally, I wouldn’t mind an optional sub with benefits akin to tera/rift (ie benefits that are purely convenience/luxury, not out of the reach of non-sub player), but I don’t think it’s a good idea to go with due to the sheer number of people that player this game BECAUSE it’s not a sub game (optional or not).
I mean I buy enough gems in a month to cover a standard sub fee several times over, so I’d be happy to sub and support the game that way, but many never spend another penny after original purchase.
I’m always amused by the people who have been so thoroughly indoctrinated by the outdated MMO subscription model that they are convinced that it’s necessary and beneficial.
My thoughts exactly.
Convince who you want, but rest assured that my last day of GW2 will be the first day they have a subscription tier. Take that as you will.
P2P gives you frequent content? WoW went without new content for about a year. Then they sold the players the Warlords of Draenor expansion for $60. It’s an expansion where you have a table that you send NPCs out to do adventures while you sit there (except you don’t actually send them out. You push a button and wait for the game to say they came back). The forums there are calling that expansion the Facebook game expansion.
No, giving a company money each month is no guarantee of timely new content.

I thought the cash shop was supposed to subsidize content creation? So far it has, but most of it’s bee temporary. Remember the Marionette? Battle for LA? The tower event in Kessex? Aetherblade attacks?
I think a better solution would be going back to their roots. New permanent content. Dungeons. Fractals. Open world events that are permanent. Evolving quest chains. Redesigns of Temple events that reward successful defenses. There are so many more options.
Sure, we have gotten content over the years but a ton of it has been temporary or is instanced and drops no loot. Where’s the incentive to replay season 2 instances? There isn’t any. It took a ton of man hours to make that content and it offers little to zero incentive to be repeated. It makes mistakes in its designs that GW1 thrived on and their solution with the x-pac is to hide content I want to complete(battling boss Mordrem)behind a mastery gate meaning I have to do content I may not want to do to earn mastery points in order to do the content I want to complete because said content can’t even be attempted without a certain “Mastery Rating”?
No thanks
You’re living in the past mate. That ship has long sailed. It’s been way over a year since the last temporary content has been added to the game, as far as the Living World stuff goes. When Anet announced season 2 they said it would be repeatable and it is. They moved away from that, said they moved away from it, but people still bring it up, like it’s some kind of current game direction.
Let it go.
No. ….notenoughcharacters
When they guy in radical armor stands next to me – i know he earned it.
No “whales” and no “freeloaders” everyone has really equal footing here.
Guess you have never heard of Tequatl the Sunless or the Triple Trouble wurm?
So both these world bosses have a random chance to drop boss specific loot.
Namely the Tequatl skinned weapons and the Wurmslayer armor.
They are certainly NOT equal footing items that one must earn. Ive been doing Teq sense it started and only have 3 of his weapons. As for wurm only have 1 of his armors.
Cam still make ppl rage with ‘only’ 3 teq skins
I see no pay wall there only RNG like the ‘radical armor’ you mentioned
We also cannot forget the Luminous armor. Must be earned in game and if people don’t have the time to farm out silver wastes and 100% the requisite story achievements then there out of luck. I have a gulide that’s kinda mad of this simply because its NOT equal footing as you put it.
So OP do your research before trying to say something so utterly ridiculous that it makes you sound like you would be better off simply playing FF and deleting GW2.
If you don’t like it don’t play it, simple
GW2 would never survive a transition to a sub model. I’d gladly pay a mandatory monthly fee for a quality game, but glacial development, poor communication, mind-boggling design/balance changes, and frankly the worst PvE (no challenge whatsoever) of any game I’ve ever played ensure that I’d never sub to GW2.
If you want to pay a monthly fee just buy $15 of gems every month, no one needs to hold your account for ransom if you don’t.
BTP is the best model, especially with a balanced non p2w system like gw2 has.
If this game ever goes p2p, I’m getting popcorn to watch an MMO game commit suicide.
They said right from the launch of GW1 that it would never be a subscription game.
It’s no good talking about this because it’s never going to happen.
If you feel the need to support the game financially, buy gems.
Answer to the opening post : No.
That subscription crap doesn’t work.
It didn’t work for Aion.
It didn’t work for Tera.
It didn’t work for Star Wars : TOR.
It didn’t work for ESO.
And it’s not working for Wildstar either.
Part of the reason I even started on this game was the “just buy it and you can play it with no subscription” part.
The subscription is an old outdated model that doesn’t work and should not be missed.

Content is only slow because they’re finishing up the expansion. If they weren’t working on it then you’d likely see something to the frequency is season one with the permanence of season two.
When they finish this expansion the content will be still slow because they will start making another expansion for another 2 years. They are always slow, and are only focusing on story in pve.
I play this game because there is no sub and I have a craving for mmo’s. I prefer how they let me pay here and there for things instead of the old “it’s the end of the month, pay up or get out” method.
yay we have another business genius sugesting the dying subscription model that every MMO has been dropping the past few years. Heck even wow added an alternative to subsciption with the time tokens.
OP left this game, he changed his mind and doesnt want to support it anymore. Gg wp xd

Yah. The game wasn’t for him. He just found out the game has gay people playing and he said his goodbyes and left for straighter pastures.
(And he didn’t even give me all his stuff).
I vote the thread be closed also due to lack of interest and lack of OP.
