Listen, if a greatsword and hammer are going to be vehicles for lasers and other ranged nonsense, we might as well rocket ourselves into the moon with mainhand shield for Mesmer’s specialization.

Goofy reasons why this should be a thing:

Mesmer currently has two 2H and two MH 1H. Conversely, its closest cousin Necromancer has one 1H and three MH 1H. Well, that’s convenient. (I’m forcefully ignoring the number of Offhands available because I’m not here to promote honest speculation.)

It effectively solves the problem with the skill number disparity between those getting 2Hers vs 1Hers. (I petition that Shield MH3 gives us the gap-filler necessary to maintain permanent swiftness with focus, on a side note.)

It fits the sub-theme of Mesmer doing unconventional stuff so well that it might as well exist just on that principle alone.

We can go the full distance of wonk by having some sort of weird class mechanic that takes all your spare armor that you’re getting from your shields and turning it into something not spare-armor, like ferocity. Yeah, ferocity.

Off hand-only weapons are cheaper than main hands – they’re not likely to suddenly get swapped to the main slot.

Since shields are almost useless, i have to ask why would you use a shield for both hands? what kind of autoattack could you do with a shield? Throwing it Captain America style? That’d just look stupid in gw2.

You could always shield bash your enemy to death.

I dare to say that an offhand allow more versatility in gameplay than a MH.

A main hand will always be range or mele. An Offhand allow the player to chose a mainhand that may be range or mele and still keep the possibility to use it efficiently. So with a mainhand you’re stuck in a gameplay, while with an offhand you can adapt easily to any kind of situation.

Shield as a main hand would be… Unreasonable.

Two shields would look awesome, though. Maybe you could have a rolling attack, like a karka.

Considering I like the game’s aesthetics, and I think having two shields would look ridiculously stupid, I would vote for a no on this. Seriously? Two shields? That’d be as silly as seeing a main hand Focus or Torch, or a offhand Scepter. I think they’ve nailed it as far as to what should be possible to go in both hands and what should be reserved for a particular one. While I want more than two skills on my Mesmer specialization, making it possible to dual wield Shields is far from the solution I’d be after. I’m used to ArenaNet not caring much for my beloved Mesmer profession anyways. Not surprised one bit we get 2 skills while others gets 5.

What about axes, swords, daggers, maces? They both MH and OH for many classes.

yes, but shield is only offhand, so it costs 210 token instead of 300 (mace, axe, …)

Anyway i would love double shield! throwing like captain america would be awesome.

I am all about dual wielding shields. I am all about dual wielding Warhorns as well. The #3 Warhorn skill for dual wielding would be amazing. In my mind it’s amazing.

Creating tornadoes from #3 mainhand horn! Wot!

Eles have the best shield in the game. Has 5 skills two I believe.

I’d gleefully run dual shields on guardian all the time if it was a thing. The autoattack can be a light shield bash combo. Third attack blocks/reflects incoming damage while executing or something. :P

Make two-shield-style work like the yoyos from Flyff.. haha.

Ele has a “2-H-Shield” as a summon, so smacking people around with a shield doesn’t seem that far off…although i doubt it.

I kinda see where the op is meaning. I always thought it strange a mes had a gs but he doesnt really swing it around like a gs so in theory he could hold up anything to channel the attack through.

Engineers already throw it Captain America style (minus ricochet) though… and it’s not stupid looking at all.

Shield MH will be a ranged weapon that fires bolts of energy at it’s foes, and they chain on impact, chaining on up to 3 foes. Also provides reliable protection as well as a long duration reflect that grants retaliation and swoftness on the 3 skill. The 2 skill summons a shining purple vortex at your enemy, chilling enemies and pulsing with damage. When it ends it summons an illusionary demolisher (illusionary demolished attacks with the same shield AA you have and does heavy AoE damage).
The OH summons 3 clones directionally i front of you. The other skill is a skill that turns all clones into shield phantasm, also granting 1 second of distortion.

current CA style is already in play with engi: Throw Shield

and he used a gun in that one raid on Red Skulls outpost, somewhere over there, now if males got spandex then we’d probably see more Cap clones runnin around
