How do you know he will get a bunch of invites to hand out in the first place?
Because he says so?

I still don’t see why people are so surprised.
They used the exact same system before initial release. They even used the exact same wording. Why would it suddenly mean something completely different now?
The fact that people don’t read “All beta weekend events” as “All beta weekend events” but rather as “All tests ever taking place between now and release” isn’t really anyone fault but themselves.

And why should only experienced WvW commanders get invites? Why not experienced WvW players. Just because the guy is new to commanding doesn’t invalidate any following he did prior to becoming a commander.
And maybe they do want some in this test who are very familiar with WvW but not truly veterans of WvW in the test to see how they act.
They likely invited him and X of guild mates to join in on the stress test. He’s being nice and opening up the Beta to those not in his guild beforehand just in case not all slots can be filled by his guild. That’s pretty nice of him, don’t you think?

agreed, why should anyone that paid good money for a prepurchase, to be a part of the game developing, have any advantages ?! vets already know the game….let someone new play!!

You didn’t say but how do you know it’s a newish player to WvW? You know him personally? I guess you researched his WvW status or something before you posted and know how long he has played as a non commander and how long ago he got his tag.
Maybe even if he has another account that he has played in WvW since launch, I guess you know that too. He could have been playing on an old account on one server and wanted to switch servers. Instead of switching his old account he could have bought a cheap account from one of the sales and is now playing on that on his new server. Did you check this possibility out?

ANet needs to place a new job description
Position: entitled player
Job: must be able to read all announcements by ANet and interpret them to suit his own understanding. Must be able to misunderstand clearly written statements with clearly written terms and limits. Making threads about his beliefs is a plus. Must be able to believe and defend the worse interpretation from any reasonable explanations.
Apply for this position: whenever, as we already have numerous unpaid volunteers

That is actually not entirely correct.
Pre-purchase started on April 10th. There were tests after that which didn’t include everyone that have pre-purchased.
It is of course also worth pointing out that they never said any next beta event, but rather every Beta Weekend Events, just like this time.

This stress test was initially announced on May 8th and said numbers would be limited for the first stress test. The earliest you could prepurchase was June 16th. Therefore your prepurchase doesn’t include this stress test for those reasons alone.

“Beta weekend event” and “Stress test” have separate defining features and characteristics as already outline in this post. I think we need to move beyond trying to redefining accepted terminology and start talking about what I think is the actual issue. That issue being that there are beta events that pre-purchasers are not invited to. If the issue is that Anet should not allowed to do do small scale testing with external testers after pre-purchase then make your case. Personally, I don’t have a problem with it. I don’t feel slighted or grifted because I think they should have the flexibility to test in this manner if it means having a better finished product. Also, we benefit from the testing being not subject to media NDA since it’s not completely internal. The assumption here is that they won’t get the same results if they invite everyone who pre-ordered. My 2 cents.

JediYoda does have a good point though.
The Borderlands one was announced before the prepurchase and clearly states at that time that the initial ones would be limited in numbers and in who qualifies.

“We’re happy to announce that we’ll soon begin inviting select individuals to help us test the new World vs. World desert Borderlands map coming with the release of Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns™. This initial test will be small in size and duration and will focus on stressing the stability of our systems. We’re planning on expanding the number of participants involved for later tests, and we’ll release more information on how you can participate in those tests sometime in the future. This initial test will feature some of the most active WvW players in Guild Wars 2.”

beyond disappoint in this, I understand giving auto slots to well known GW2 streamers (even though I dislike watching them myself) but this sort of thing just acts as a slap in the face to those of us who supported Gw2 regardless of the kitten-storm around prepurchasing (I went ahead and bought ultimate) because I have loved GW2 since the BWE’s. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned about the expansions quantity of content at this point given how little is being divulged and how small details are seemingly being drawn out. I’ll keep the hope alive but its getting hard :S

What actually makes a player a ‘veteran’ player anyway? How are we measuring this basis of calling someone a ‘veteran’ for comparison, and at what point does someone have ‘the right’ to be called a veteran?
Its usually measured in “back in my days”.

I personally use an “envy meter.” The higher the envy, the more unworthy the other player is and the more veteran status is removed from his account.

I’d argue most streamers doing formal reviews are an inherent conflict of interest. Especially when it comes with special access privileges.
But the streaming masses just oh so enjoy boasting someone else’s opinion as their own. :P

Stress tests are short weekday events. Wait until you see an actual beta weekend event. If they match what we had in vanilla beta, you’ll be all “pfff, who cares that I didn’t do the stress test, this is awesome!” Especially if they do their signature wild and crazy weekend closing event.
I didn’t get to do the rabbit hunt or the hunger games because I had to get up for work the next day, but I heard great things. I did get to do two sessions of the Shatterer over Ashford as they did a special repeat of it in a later event. I have to say that those events make it easy for me not to mope over missing a short session when the really juicy one(s) will be so much better.

Oh my god. Stop the presses. Anet is actually asking the press to play the game, so that they can promote the game. How DARE they do that to us hard-working, long term veteran players, who have sweated and toiled sacrificing everything for this game.
We bought a game. We played the game. We got what we paid for…and least, I got what I paid for. Now Anet is running a stress test, and they’re inviting people who can promote the game most efficiently to it. Oh the horror. How dare they do something to further their business for a stress test.
Honestly, I don’t get people sometimes.

There’s no flaw in my logic. If Anet is going to promote their product, it makes more sense to promote it to a journalist than it does to a veteran player. They don’t need to promote it to you. The do need to get the word out there.
But, getting the word out there is good for veteran players too. Let’s say there are 1 million veterans, and they only need 20,000 people for a stress test. 90% of the veterans couldn’t get in anyway. So what is the big deal really?
They might as well invite press and have that going since most veterans can’t be accommodated by this.

You really don’t get it. You are one person. I am one person. This guy reaches thousands of people.
Now, I like the game and whether I get into beta or not, my word of mouth isn’t likely to change. I’m a fan of the game. I’m going to sell the game.
But this guy, he can reach more people. Are you going to stop liking the game because you personally couldn’t get into a stress test. If so, you’re not much of a fan. If you like the game, really like it, you’ll be talking good about it to people. The press needs a reason to publish something.

So again, are you going to stop posting positive stuff, because you didn’t get into a single stress test. That’s the question. If you’re not going to stop, publicity wise, there’s no reason to invite you. But more to the point…there aren’t enough slots for every veteran anyway. So you have to make what invitations you do send out count.
Logically if almost all vets would get excluded because there aren’t that many spots anyway. And you have no evidence the people being invited aren’t long term vets anyway.
You’re complaining just to complain.

This stress test was announced to happen before prepurchase was available, and at the time they already made it clear they wanted active wvw players to test it.
Neither is this test even a beta weekend event. Had they said “access to all bèta’s”, you’d have a point. But they were very clear (for once) that this was about beta weekend events. Something that has been clearly defined in the past.
It doesn’t mean you have no chance of getting in, just that it’s not guarenteed. And if anet sticks to what they said (for once), being an active wvw players increases those chances.

This topic is amusing, people don’t actually even pay attention to the fact that it is not so much that they won’t give us access than it is that they can’t. Realistically, this test consists of three servers, and since main WvW has no overflows, well space is limited is just a fact.
How they are selecting their invited players (that we know of) can be discussed to no end, however, there are probably reasons that are technical in nature making it necessary to have separate servers and, likely, clients for this test. Stress tests by nature give them best results the more people are involved in them, but the fact is there are only three maps and no overflows (+ EB).

I am well aware that giving access for every prepurchaser to this one event is perhaps not the best idea. I am not talking about that. What i am pointing out is that having a prepurchase whose one of bonuses is a beta access, almost immediately followed by a beta that doesn’t honor that privilege is a very bad PR. No matter how they word it.

How can it be tricky?
It outright says exactly what it means. The fact that you decided to read it as something other than that, isn’t really ArenaNets fault.
Lets make it even more clear, shall we?
Definition of weekend:
a. the end of the week, esp the period from Friday night until the end of Sunday
A weekend consists of a Saturday and the Sunday that comes after it. Sometimes Friday evening is also considered to be part of the weekend. The weekend is the time when most people in Europe, North America, and Australia do not go to work or school.

That may be. But that sounds like a problem from the official retailers.
Going by trailer video it was clear, access to beta weekend events.
Going by the big banner on the home page, acces to beta weekend events.
FAQ page always talks about beta weekend events, it even has a segment where they once again explain what exactly a beta weekend event is.
What are Beta Weekend Events and when will they take place?
Beta Weekend Events are selected weekends when everyone who pre-purchases the game is invited to test Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns. BWEs may include new content or a repeat of content available in previous tests.
The Heart of Thorns Beta Weekend Events will be announced as we get closer to them.
The idea that a lot of people who prepurchased are not well informed does seem true when threads like this pop up.
