We get XP no matter what we do in-game. How is gaining XP a grind? To me, anyway, any progress on a Mastery line is just bonus.
Though, I guess if someone did not want to leave the Heart of Maguuma to visit Pact Tyria, or vice versa, and be awarded XP in that area, it would be an issue. Still, it sounds like there will be new reasons to visit Pact Tyria (at least, for some – new Map Rewards, etc.).
Maybe, it’s just me, though. /shrug
I was under the impression that just leveling unlocking everything in a one mastery would take about the equivalent time as leveling a new character from 1-80.
In my mind, this would make sense. I have 8 level 80s, one of each class, and I would expect unlocking and completing all masteries in the expansion would take an equivalent amount of time leveling.
I’ve been hoarding all my Birthday and Celebration boosters for grinding out the experience portion of the masteries. I’m sure guides for obtaining all the mastery points will be on Dulfy soon after release.

Ok. Name it Mastery XP. Whatever you want to call it, we acquire it the same way; by playing whatever part of the game we choose.
That article is a bit out-of-date. Though, we no longer get rewarded in the same way for accruing XP, we still do accrue it, and use it to ‘fill up’ our Mastery bars in the same way (though not at the same rate, always), we did our former XP bars.
Edit: typo

I doubt it will be the same as the current EXP.
Right now you can progress and reach the ceiling fast and doing a HUGE amount of things (I hardly doubt an expansion can delivery what the core game did), and all of these give you the ability to face any challenge into the game being basically top tier (excluding fractals where you need expensive sets to be at the top).
To my understanding HoT, instead, make you grind mastery one by one, it’s not like you explore and your masteries will improve depending of what you’re doing roaming around, there will be tracks and you can choose to fill only one at a time.
Also it seems content will be gated behind these overincreasing levels points you will need, essentially it’s almost like they were expanding a fractals-like system to the whole new pve content, which in my opinion is an awful idea.
Even now everytime I propose to new guildies to join me in fractals most of them won’t come, because they don’t wanna spend “so much” gold and time to play with me in high level content. But I have no problem bringing with me anyone to do ANY dungeon.
I believe that’s the difference between the original system and what they are trying to implement with HoT.
Restrictions over restrictions to make some players (probably those who spend more money to play and the ones that almost live within the game and keep company “for free” to the first ones), feel like special snowflakes.

Will it be grind hell for those who have multiple characters?
My impression was masteries are account-level. And if they aren’t there will be complaining until they are. Sort of like dyes.
And it took what, 2 years to get dye account bound?
I’m hoping we start off account bound, though I know plenty who want it character bound so it “gives them something to do”
I don’t fancy doing it 9 times though, unless the timeline is significantly shorter than I’m expecting.
There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon
Auto-loot should be standard and not tied to a mastery.
Just be happy they are giving it to us. For me this is one of the best things coming in HoT and I’m quite happy to grind some xp to get it unlocked.
It doesn’t matter to me anyways as I auto loot as it is.
But them putting a core feature of a game behind this is pretty ludicrous.

No if they implement something poorly they should get that feedback.
Miranda Zero – Ele / Twitch Zero – Mes / Chargrin Soulboom – Engi
Aliera Zero – Guardian / Reaver Zero – Necro
I really like the sounds of the masteries and I’m looking forward to seeing how it effects my progression through the zones and such. However, like others, if the auto-loot thing is what I think it is (an auto pick up, so no need to press a button), then I really think this needs to be added as an already unlocked option for everyone, regardless of whether you have HoT or not. A QoL feature should never be blocked behind a paywall or progression mechanic. That just sounds obsurd to me.
It’s like unlocking the ability to rebind your keys or unlocking the ability to turn with your mouse instead of using the keyboard. Its not content, its not an activity, its just a way to control your character’s ability to pick up rewards. It should not be a mastery unlock IMO.
My only hope for this particular mastery unlock is that there is more to it than a simple auto pick up upgrade. If that is all it is, then that would be a bit disappointing. It’s not enough to upset me or stop me playing the game of course, because that would be just as obsurd. But I would find it a bit daft to have to unlock such a thing.
Q: Why is advanced logistics not available by default to all players?
A: To combat botting, we put it in a mastery line
I don’t really know what else to say other than there’s a severe lack of creativity over at ANet.

I see it in the opposite way. By putting the automatic loot in a mastery line, I find that far more creative than suddenly dropping it into a game.
Oh my… 3 new legendaries are being added with the expansion. It really feels like this expansion is being super rushed. Most days I’m reminded that the $50 price tag isn’t justified.
Be glad you didn’t go for the most expensive as I did for my gifted account/expansion.
I am sad that a birthday gift is now more than confusing – not equally applied and the “new” content is hard as heck to find/follow.
