Soraya Mayhew – Thief
Melissa Koris – Engie – SF for Life!
Sidenote: I’ve seen it now on multiple threads, and I’m not really sure if people are trolling or just dense, but Rox is female. It isn’t a “bromance”.
During the “A Moment’s Peace” (I think that’s what it was called) instance in LA Rox tells Braham that “We have to talk about it sooner or later!” Braham makes an excuse about cleaning his gear and stalks off.
So, what is “it”? A lot of people are assuming it’s a romantic entanglement, but it could be anything. His apparently troubled relationship (there’s that kitten word again) with his mother. His hairstyle. Ham. Who knows?
We’re just trying to breathe some life into our characters. If it resonates with people, then we’re happy. If not, then it means we try something different.
This makes me a little sad to see, but please bobby correct me if I am misinterpreting it.
Modern media struggles with being heavily hetero centric due to the very nature of the issue. There are less homosexuals than heterosexuals and when you are trying to sell a product, you appeal to the larger audience as default.
But this doesn’t necessarily make a good story and it certainly doesn’t lend itself to a creative environment that can create meaningful and realistic characters and situations.
In my experience as a person, moments like the moment of peace aren’t that unusual. Rarely when two humans interact do they preform oscar winning dialogue. Usually it is awkward, it’s two humans clumsily trying to connect.
And the idea that you might not have included this interaction between Kasmere and Marjory because it didn’t resonate with majority just doesn’t sit right with the writer in me.
Too often is creativity stifled because it won’t appeal to the right demographic, so I truly hope that isn’t what you meant.
I think what it means is “If we get an immediate and overwhelmingly negative response, we’ll push the button which summons the kill laser”.
I think what it means is “If we get an immediate and overwhelmingly negative response, we’ll push the button which summons the kill laser”.
Indeed, indeed. Then again majority of players are in the game and enjoying it so a tiny percentage of people who post on forum, and even less who want to shun such things because they don’t like it shouldn’t really paint a picture as to how the majority of GW2 community feels about those things.
From what I see from the in game conversations, other articles, blog posts, vids (even WP expressed his delight as in “freaking finally!”) it’s safe to say that the majority is feeling very positive about this. For whatever reasons.

I’m pretty sure that the “it” they are talking about is the fight they are having about her joining the Stone Warband and leaving everyone (himself included) behind. That is what their fight prior to that sentence was about anyways.

Well positive or ambivalent. “Lesbians? Who cares, when are they going to fix sPvP?!”
they belong in Logans harem, they pretend they are lesbians so queen does not suspect the truth.

Only in a technical sense. The thing is that a lot of what I see in Rox-Braham relationship is typically associated with a “bromance”. There is the desire to be with each other doing dangerous stuff, knowing that each will have the others back.
If it were to guys acting like Rox and Braham would you have trouble calling it a bromance? That is the point people are trying to get across.

I’ve had bromances with females before. It’s really not that out of the ordinary; any two-person friendship that gets deep enough without sparking a romance tends to veer into that territory, regardless of the sexes involved.
Only had time to read two pages so far, but I was really confused in that scene on the beach, because I was convinced they were already married.
I base this on something (I apparently only believed) I heard Marjory say once. I’m not sure when or where I think I heard it.
“Rox: So…you’re a mated pair?
Kasmeer Meade: (laugh)
Marjory Delaqua: (chuckle) We’re currently in negotiations.”
If that’s the way portrayal of that relationship will continue I think it would be as shallow as I feared. Truth be told delivery is not so bad but still strikes me as a bit juvenile. Heh if during this year retrospect they point out pair of lesbians as their achievement I’ll be equally disappointed.
I would say that was a rather logical reaction from Kasmeer and Marjory.
I was under the impression that a mated pair was more or less a married couple. Which would make the reaction logical if they are talking about marriage.
Or simply the absurdity of the question completely out of the blue.

Would you have rather they went into a waxy poetic dialogue of how they love each other very much, they couldn’t live without the other, it was love at first sight, that the other is their soul mate, etc., etc,?
They response was much more realistic, and I’m glad they didn’t shovel fluff at us. They’re in a relationship, and they care for one another very much, but they haven’t agreed to go that extra step to become a “mated pair” yet.

Everyone knows its would really be Jennah’s harem. Logan would just be lucky to be involved at all.

I think Rox was simply echoing the response on the forums. That’s my take on it. The writers injecting a bit of community feedback into the dialogues.
In fact, a lot of the Dead End Bar scene seemed to use feedback from the forums. Like the way Marjory tells you how she couldn’t stress enough just how important the player is. I enjoyed that.
No matter what you think of Jory and Kasmeer’s relationship, expect it to be short.
The New Destiny’s Edge has exactly one human too many.

The Destiny’s Edge had 2 asuras and we all know what happened, right?
So Braham and Rox are re-enacting Rytlock and Logan’s bromance, complete with one character endlessly trying to run off in the name of external duty?
Yeah. I can see that.
No matter what you think of Jory and Kasmeer’s relationship, expect it to be short.

Well, they don’t have a sylvari yet. I don’t count Canach, he’s too much of a loose cannon.
But I agree it will likely be short-lived. I have a growing suspicion that Kasmeer is about to head down a very dark path indeed.

I’d be willing to agree to that. Should we give it a chance to do it right?
and who said that DE2 must have the same number of members as DE1? and who said the they will become DE2? maybe they will all be killed…
It’s ANets way of telling us they are increasing team sizes to 6! So that there is room for a new race later.
6 player team? Can be interesting.
Also 6 divided by 2 equals 3 => Half Life 3 confirmed
About Jory and Kas it looks that they are here to stay in that form. Just won’t enjoy that piece of LP content as much as I used to. Hopefully there will be something different to entertain me.
It’s ANets way of telling us they are increasing team sizes to 6! So that there is room for a new race later.
Why would a new race merit an increase in party sizes?
The party size number being 5 isn’t because there are 5 races, it’s because they looked at the 8 professions and figured out how many players were needed to fill all of the niche roles whilst allowing a little bit of leniency.
Every single dungeon in game is designed around 5 players – increasing it to 6 would actually cause a lot of problems.
- Of course that’s off topic.
I really like their relationship. People who say it’s fan service or being forced need to loosen up a bit and just enjoy the game. If you don’t like it, ignore it. LS is optional. You haven’t seen blatant fan service till you watched your average anime. And there is nothing wrong with adding those things in game, and enjoying them.
Keep Kas and Jory Anet They + other characters are too awesome to be discarded so easily, and frankly only characters I care about since Tybalt.
Also, how can you honestly hate on this? This is too cute.

Assuming they want to put a racial group together. They might want a class based group.
In which case,
Kasmeer – Mesmer
Marjory – Necromancer
Taimi – Engineer
Rox – Ranger
Braham – Guardian
Which leaves the thief, elementalist, warrior spots open.
Scarlet unfortunately is out because she is also an engineer I believe so she’ll have to die.
There is also one other common element to all the current characters that is not class or race based. See if you can pick it out.
They all have parental drama? ‘Cept the markedly well adjusted Marjory – one more reason she’s the deader.
They’ve consistently tried to play down profession as your defining aspect. There isn’t a grand guildhall dedicated to each profession the way there is a city for each race. And the game’s fixed party size also speaks heavily to a "team of Five’ structure.
Maybe they will be an 8-member ‘Justice League’, but my money is still on a ‘party’-sized band with the same kinds of restrictions players are accustomed to.
I doubt they’ll kill either one. That would be counter-intuitive to their poorly disguised agenda. It’s so palpably obvious they went out of their way to include such to promote their tiresome “everyone’s included, we’re so progressive” tagline, rather than allowing legitimate progression of the story (not borne of forcing ideology).
It detracts from the game in that time was directed to it, it is insincere and artificial, and is at best fan-service for certain demographics, and at worst, propaganda.
We can conclude that since the promotion of such relationships is so common within the game, there must be a purpose. It doesn’t reflect the demographics of reality, so it can’t be to appeal to the player. The sheer number suggests that their inclusion didn’t just “spring to mind” in story development, but that the writers intentionally went out of their way to incorporate it. Furthermore, its presence doesn’t achieve and isn’t able to convey anything not present within a hetero relationship; though I feel as if where they are encountered, there’s no need to mention either type of relationship. As such, the only logical conclusion is that it’s to force an unsolicited opinion regarding real-life through bombarding the player with the inclusion of this artificial writing.
At least Professor (Al) Gorr trying to reduce magic “emissions” didn’t feel forced, and instead made more cared for, subtle references to the issue. It complemented GW2 lore and was more of a joke, rather than being a proselytising aside.
Please, if you’re going to be cynical, go the distance:
What could be more coldly calculated than to introduce a top tier character that openly has a homosexual orientation, yet because of grief and loyalty to their deceased partner has never and will never actually perform the act?
You get the best of both worlds: the “inclusion” of that edgy out-of-the-closet character while still being able to placate your heterosexual (and even full-blown homophobic) audience by saying with complete sincerity, “yeah, but it never happened. Anywhere. In the entire game.” Because while it sounds racey, a couple of Sylvari “being entwined” is about as sexual as rubbing a couple honey bees together. They are both non-reproductive drones despite the Sylvari’s superficial resemblance to human genders.

My god I’m downright terrified to think what would happen if Anet put a male homosexual relationship there. Actually there is, in Sylvari storyline, and nobody seemed to kitten about that one, even though the 1 guy implied “he loves me” or something. Terrifying agenda!
The amount of hate, bashing, wrong statistics being made up, and downright over analyzing, and blowing these 2 freaking NPC-s out of proportion is truly mind-boggling.
It’s not like Anet didn’t write a whole essay a few pages back trying to educate you about this matter. Everyone I know in game is totally cool with this, and we wouldn’t have this pointless thread about agendas and “political correctness” if it were a hetero couple.
Seems only the forum people, aka the miniscule amount of player-base are the ones who whine the loudest and those opinions should NOT be taken as a collective voice of community who wishes one of them dies, or worse, that such things shouldn’t be in game because of reasons my mind cannot understand.
It’s so freaking sad Anet has to read all this kitten.
We can conclude that since the promotion of such relationships is so common within the game, there must be a purpose. It doesn’t reflect the demographics of reality, so it can’t be to appeal to the player.
Okay.
In real life, usual estimates say that about 10% of the population is gay (supposedly about 20% say they’re “not straight,” but let’s be generous and keep it at the minimum number), and I think it’s safe to assume that that percentage would be the same in Tyria. However, the sylvari as a species are not capable of reproduction and view gender as irrelevant when it comes to love, therefore it would make sense if roughly 50% of sylvari pairings were gay.
So let’s make a list of every couple ever mentioned in GW2, as long as we are sure of their genders, and see if those numbers match up. Married or divorced, alive or dead, requited or unrequited (crushes and flirting count too)…all of them are here. At least, all I could find in my research.
The ones marked 1 on the list had their romances mentioned in one or more full cutscenes, the ones marked 2 were mentioned elsewhere in the living or personal story, the ones marked 3 were mentioned in events and hearts, and the ones marked 4 were mentioned in flavor text, NPC chatter out in the world, optional NPC conversations, or out-of-game writings (short stories, etc.).
Sylvari same-sex pairings:
1. Caithe and Faolain
Dagdar and Eladus
3. Cymbel and Nia (Nia says they’re friends, but it seems like they have stronger feelings than that)
4. Roardina and one of the festival-goers

Gairwen and Evart
4. Variella and Hanar

Wjerd and Fibharr
Exiffa and her partner
Non-sylvari hetero pairings:
1. Jennah and Logan

Snarl and Galina
2. Eir and Borje
Braham and Ottilia
Ottilia and Ebbe

Pier and Esmet
Levvi and Blingg
Harlow and Dotta
Kalle and Aldis
Eda and her husband
Myr and her husband
Kimber and her husband
Webb and his wife
Gareth and his wife
Traveling noble and her husband

4. Eir and Krennak (his dialogue suggests they had something)
Yngvi and Brynhildr
Aggren and Marcela
Gwen and Keiran
Althea and Rurik
Via and Feros
Knut and Gaerta
Bandito and Seraphette
Lord and Lady Marduke
Nellie and Caden
Dugh and Amaybel
Jorge and Bethsha
Diah and Jeb
Russ and Cicely
Welkin and Alicia
Gunther and Ine
Cobiah and Isaye
Tessa and Logan
Citizen in Rurikton and Tessa
Weyandt and at least 4 of the 12-ish people he married, if not all of them
Eliza and her husband
Arlo and his wife
Kol and his “woman”
Lyasa and her husband
Watchful Moon and his wife
Vollym and his wife
Dessa and her boyfriend
Brother-in-law of the citizen in District Promenade and his wife

Everyone’s parents
That makes 31% of sylvari relationships and 6% of non-sylvari relationships. So.

That doesn’t make any sense. Sylvari are quite capable of having sex (and the feelings both physical and emotional that come along with it), they just can’t produce children. I don’t know the context of your post but I seriously hope it was a joke >.>
I think you left out Mad king Thorn and something like 5 wives .
It doesn’t reflect the demographics of reality, so it can’t be to appeal to the player.
I found this statement hilarious. You’re trying to apply real world demographics and statistics to a fictional fantasy realm, and then you are complaining when they don’t match.
I think you left out Mad king Thorn and something like 5 wives .
Nah, I got him. But I decided to use his real name, Oswald, for…reasons I guess.

Well played – I did a search for “Thorn” and didn’t get any hits .

8 wives plus one.
But there’s 5 wives that we know of.

He certainly does. Hopefully next Halloween we’ll learn more about the other Mad Queen’s… and then I’ll have to give Oswald a stern talking to, followed by him sleeping on the couch.

That was probably when he started thinking about getting a new wife. When he got send to the Cold Dark Couch of Every Increasing Despair and Loneliness.

Fronis is female, and so was her mate (before she was killed by flame legion.)

Good to know. I used the wiki for this and they didn’t have a picture of her.
Okay, I’ve added Mad King Thorn’s remaining 6 wives and also 3 more same-sex relationships I found out about through Google. That still leaves us at 6% of non-sylvari relationships, still nowhere near a disproportionate amount, none of which you have to hear about in game. If it offends you to your very soul, you can always run away when Marjory and Kasmeer talk about dating and it won’t affect the plot at all. It’s harder to run away from a cutscene, which I why I labeled those relationships “1.”
Meanwhile, the people who enjoy feeling like they’re finally no longer being treated as completely nonexistent in their entertainment media will continue doing that.

You know, this just points out that tyria is actually more homophobic than the real world (where across almost all animal species around 15% are openly bisexual to homosexual), which is really weird since no gods or laws seem to exist about that… except maybe in the eternal alchemy because of kinda obvious reproductive limits, would turn it taboo. Ofc without counting sylvari since … well plants.
Sidenote: I’ve seen it now on multiple threads, and I’m not really sure if people are trolling or just dense, but Rox is female. It isn’t a “bromance”.
And when I say, “I love you, Rox,”,
It’s not what it implies.

Still sadly less homophobic than 99% of other fictional worlds.
But I think it’s just a matter of time. ANet seems pretty well on the side of inclusivity, which is one of the things that makes me love GW2 so much.

How is Tyria homophobic? NOT ONCE do you see ANY homosexual characters being bashed/put down. And there are a fair number of NPCs open about it. (At least one Asura in Rata Sum mentions her mate/partner getting ideas into “Her cute little bald head” I’m fairly sure there might be at least one or a few more in Rata Sum themselves. At least one Norn NPC mentions waiting for her Girlfriend when asked out.)
I’m just not seeing any evidence of Tyria being hostile toward gays.

Homophobia and representation are two totally different subjects.

Exactly. If it was homophobic, you wouldn’t see Rox OPENLY asking in a public bar if Kasmeer and Marjory are a “mated pair”. Or the Asura in Rata Sum mentioning to a stranger about her mate. Or a number of other npc cases.
There is nothing to support Tyria being homophobic. Hell, Kasmeer outright put her name on Marjory’s door.
Do you know what I think about this whole ordeal? I see BOTH TYPE OF RELATIONSHIP as a cheap way of telling a story, and it gets in the way of what actually is happening with the main plot. It doesn’t help that these same-sex relationship in these stories are usually the “in your face” kind of way and that their fans are the loudest when spoken against it.
