Sea of Sorrows
I loved all the books as well it makes the entire environment so real as we know the backstory behind everything. Sea of Sorrows was really powerful particularly because it spanned so many years and we saw the development and founding of Lion’s Arch as we see it now. It’s really breathtaking to feel a part of it and “experience” the many years of its making and then recognize the places in game
Ive only just started reading Sea of Sorrows. And so far I feel its a lot better written and more enjoyable than the previous books. They were good but they felt a bit out of touch with the lore.
I’m partway through it and excited to read it. Glad to hear it’s been enjoyed! I loved the other two books and I’ve found the writing to be much weaker in this one so far, but I’m reading it for the lore mostly so that’s ok.
I’m sorry you’re kidding right?
The first two were written very very poorly I found myself cringing at the language they used and the really weak attempts at incorporating character description and development. Ree is a far superior writer.

Well I think Ghosts is the better book, Edge of Destiny is by far the worst of the 3.
Ree’s prose may be better than in Ghosts but in almost every other way Ghosts is better. The characterisation in SoS is quite poor with Macha the only character to achieve some depth. Cobiah is pretty much a Mary Sue, we’re told he has flaws but we don’t really see them. The characters in Ghosts were more flawed and believable.
I also disliked the time jumps across critical points in Cobiah’s story. Isaye leaving for years just does not make sense cause it was glossed over for example.

No, I’m not kidding. I agree with morrolan that SoS’s characterisation isn’t great. I cringed through the first act, with our hero and his perfect sister and evil mother and their predictable story. I’m also concerned by how obvious Isaye is, but I haven’t finished it yet as I said so I’ll reserve finale judgement.
The description of Orr rising was really spectacular though. Good stuff.
Morrolan’s tastes are probably used to typical blah blah writing in which everything is stated explicitly and very boring character development.
I was quite satisfied with the writing save a few parts where I had to gloss over extensive ship descriptions I had no care for. Also some overly dramatic uses of fantasy writing style. Cobiah was annoying as a young man and became wise (for a pirate) by the end.
And nice cameo for Livia although she was pretty passive in the fight.

Well my tastes runs to stuff like Game of Thrones so take that as you will. I actually like books that are done ‘in media res’ but it has to be done well.
