I know it’s hard to concentrate on these details when one is distracted by fleeing refugees, attacking baddies, and people yelling for help everywhere. But I see that Scarlet’s drill has a name…“the Breachmaker”.

Um…what’s she breaching, do you think? She’s digging the bay even deeper, but the fact that she’s throwing everything she’s got at LA as the excavation goes on suggests she’s got something big in mind.

What could it be?

I know it’s an effective way to role play your Order in the world and it might even make sense from a lore point of view, but as a person who chose Vigil on their “main” I really wish they’d stop putting really important lore information in Order specific dialogue. It really sucks to be missing out on this stuff and it makes me feel like I made the wrong choice.

What convenient placement. Thaumanova Mk. II here we go.

So I would assume that the drill bit is somewhat like a battery terminal. Conclusions:

  • The sounds coming from under LA were the ley lines all along. Unless there is also an ED at the intersection (some interpretations of the thumper maps had the EDs at the tips of the ley lines, so if you agree with those maps this scenario is unlikely).
  • If she is indeed after an ED she is probably leveling up her airship by siphoning off magic out of the ley line intersection (or at least, she plans to).
  • I even further doubt that LA is the final target.
  • I wonder what that Skritt who enjoyed rummaging around in the sewers has to say.

-Water level is lowering (noticable mostly around Grand Piazza and Farshore Ward)

This indicates that there must be a massive volume of air under LA; because aren’t the harbors connected directly to the sea? In order for the water level to be lower [locally] the rate of flow into the caverns must be immense – unless Scarlet blocked off the harbor somehow so that she could physically access the caverns. Will the new LA be partially built in these caverns? Is the new map we have been asking for going to be below LA? Are these caverns possible one way to access a specific ED? Primordius seems logical, Mordremoth is very plausible.

It really sucks to be missing out on this stuff and it makes me feel like I made the wrong choice.

I would suspect the other orders have their own NPCs that either explain the same thing, or, further flesh out the information – we just haven’t found them yet.

Anyone else find it poetic that we have come round in a complete circle? The LS started with us freeing refugees, and we are now doing it again.

There is a lot of air under Lion’s Arch actually. We do actually know what is beneath the city.

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Beneath_Lion's_Arch

We also know that (at least 250 years ago) this underground network was heavily breached by destroyer tunnels. Normally I would like to speculate that Primordius is involved but I doubt that’s the case.

Anet have been pretty systemic about avoiding GW’s lore and substituting instead the Living Story alternative storyline. So, perhaps the water is just lowered for appearances.

I doubt they are really going as in depth in this as the community is.

The entrance was to the north, but the story is that the caves themselves were under L.A.- thus the PC’s alarm at seeing an explosives stockpile. I do agree that the canon is questionable, but at least one of them has to be, and of the three the LA one is the most likely.

Is there some way to change orders that I’m not aware of? Many of us didn’t know we would miss out on things like this over a year after we made our choice of Orders.

How did the Priory discover that Lion’s Arch is sitting on top of an intersection of several ley lines? Was there mention of this before in Tyria or did this come out of nowhere? I don’t understand ley lines particularly well, but if Lion’s Arch has so much magic beneath it, wouldn’t someone have noticed something by now? Wouldn’t there be more ambient magic, more powerful magic users from there, the place should generally be more magical? Is it just a coincidence that the drill is digging under old Lion’s Arch?

  • I even further doubt that LA is the final target.

Taimi seems to understand Scarlet better than anyone else (she was right about the thumpers during the Marionette and she seemed to know what was going on better than most in Edge of the Mists) and she says Scarlet has moved on from Lion’s Arch. We did see Scarlet during the beginning of the invasion, but I guess she’s moved elsewhere (like Thaumanova – a place where reality was already torn) for her final target?

Again, Taimi is wrong. We know that Scarlet is on top of the drill, because we get aerial surveillance cutscenes, but not a single one of the characters, including the ones we play, knows that. Nobody has seen Scarlet because she’s staying far out of reach. Taimi’s information relies solely on the accounts of people who were fleeing for their lives as their world literally crashed and burned around them. She makes the assumption that nobody seeing Scarlet means she isn’t there.

She isn’t some omniscient Scarlet expert. She’s a kid with a hero complex, and just because she obsesses over Scarlet doesn’t mean she’s developed some supernatural ability to pinpoint her location.

Scarlet could be digging deep to find Glint’s child.

Seeing as Glint retreated to the Dwarves, then died later on, she could have looked after her child there and created an underground passage of some kind as the Dwarves did live underground.

… Apparently her child’s status is unknown, and seeing as there were mysteries in LA, and Glint (and her child(ren?) are immune to the Elder Dragon’s control, Glint’s child could be underground in Lion’s Arch, something Scarlet would want possibly to gain secrets about the old Destiny’s Edge guild in order to counter act possible actions that could be repeated by the Destiny’s Edge Guildies and exploit their weaknesses to defeat them, one-by-one seeing as they’ve split up.

Either this or they’re searching for the Forgotten in order to access the spell used to free Glint from the Elder Dragon to use it on other creatures, possibly even form a branded army.

Well, that’s my logic after reading clumps of the Lore

With Glint’s Child, she could extract the Immunity to the Elder Dragons powarz?

Idk, that’s what came across to me when I stumbled over it in the Lore today and saw this Thread. The Branded Army could be linked with Kralkatorrik?

As for knowledge, the Child wouldn’t know it, but could be deceived to reward it: since Glint communicated and contacted with the Dwarves, and since the Dwarves didn’t die over time, this could mean that they’d have told Glint’s Child about her Mother’s triumphs and explained Glint’s shared thoughts. I truly think she trying to kill a dragon under LA or at least get it to come to LA. She is giving ppl a reason to run away from LA yes it may kill a few ppl but she is giving them time to get out. If she wanted to just kill every one in LA she could of just did it all at once from air ships and there would be nothing we as player could do about it. I think she getting ready to fight a dragon because it keeps trying to contort her and it threatens the world that she wants to take over.

I am getting a lot of this from the quotes that you see on the new back item i think her views is the type of any means necessary to get something done its not evil why she is doing what she doing but a very twisted good. I think the players are going to get in the way and kill her at the moment of breaching what she looking for and we will see a dragon come out or come to LA and truly destroy it. And its going to be all the players fault i think this will lead into a new arc where the players become more of an outcast. I think this game could become very dark in that way.

My impression from the pieces of information given to us so far is that Scarlet aroused the interest of something immensely powerful when she gazed into the very fabric of the world. She gazed into the Abyss and the Abyss gazed back at her.

This being started to corrupt Scarlet immediately and managed to do so when it comes to her physical form – her namechange and the way she killed Omadd clearly shows it. Her mind is still resisting and it drove her insane. But she is still so much in control that she started her big plan to find and kill whatever it is that is tormenting her.

She found the location where it is resting, and has started to dig down towards it so that her Ethercannon can fire at it and kill it. I am sure that’s her plan, but it will most likely backfire badly. She is most likely doing what the sleeping creature wants her to do – help it rise.

So my prediction is that the Ethercannon will basically power the being up and allow it to rise earlier than it would have without Scarlet’s unintentional “help”.

A Pact member tells you after the defeat of Zhaitan that there is “one down, four to go”, so i bet we will see the Rising of Mordremoth, the Jungle Dragon, the sixth and final Elder Dragon to awake.

I also assume that the Sylvari were meant to be dragon minions, and that Ventari and Ronan saved the seed (or shall i say one out of several) from becoming corrupted. The Dream is the Pale Tree’s way of shielding its children from corruption and Scarlet, by trying to break free from what she saw as control, has involuntarily allowed something less beneficial than the Pale Tree to gain control over her.

So with the next update we will see Scarlet fire her Ethercannon at Mordremoth, it will wake and since Scarlet still resists it will destroy her. I hope Mordremoth swallows her whole. Her alliance will fall apart, with Mordremoth probably taking over some factions like the Nightmare Court members. We, the players, will drive the remains of Scarlet’s troops out of the ruins of LA and see Mordremoth fly away.

As i said, this is my own prediction based on the pieces of information available. I’ll find out if i am correct or wrong.

I repeat again: ‘What does God need with a starship?’ The other dragons woke up just fine on their own, why does Mordremoth need a giant drill?

Do you expect logical explanations in a Fantasy setting where magic exists (and where multiple writers are working on the storyline)?

I do get your Star Trek reference though. If you compare that powerless being from the movie with an Elder Dragon you can see the answer: God doesn’t need a starship.

Mordremoth doesn’t need a drill or the Ethercannon to wake up, it is most likely perfectly capable of rising on its own. It’s Scarlet who needs the drill to reach it and attempt to kill it.

Since the end of Zhaitan hasn’t happened in the Living Story timeline it doesn’t know that a big cannon shot (or will shoot) Zhaitan’s tail off. Mordremoth probably doesn’t know what up-to-date technology can do to it, or it could be that a shot from the Ethercannon is like a morning coffee for it, helping it to get up faster.

In the end it’s a theory that will be proven correct or false. I could live with either, by the way.

Actually, we’ve had confirmation by now that the Living World happens after the Personal Story. But anyway, a sleeping Elder Dragon probably wouldn’t be aware of such a thing.

Well, about the whole “why does god need a starship” issue, other Elder Dragons also had Champions prepare their rise, in some cases we know for sure that they even were actively waking them up (Great Destroyer).

My issue with this idea is more that I just find it weird that Mordremoth would have a Champion which entirely relies on technology and similar things to wake him up. (Something like a Poison Ivy-esque champion would be more fitting. Like a sylvari who constantly gives off a miasma as potent as the Tower of Nightmares one.)

But well, if it’s Mordremoth now, this could be explained by the fact that they would then have completely overthrown their initial plans – in which case Scarlet being all about technology would just be a remnant of what they were originally going for (they had stated once that Elder Dragons won’t be a part of the 1st season. If they do play a role in it now, they definitely changed their plans at some point).

I repeat again: ‘What does God need with a starship?’ The other dragons woke up just fine on their own, why does Mordremoth need a giant drill?

Actually…

  • Primordus needed the Great Destroyer to wake up. With the Great Destroyer’s death, Primordus was kept asleep for three more years. His other destroyers were still around, so it’s likely they – or another woken champion – performed the act the Great Destroyer was needed for.
  • Jormag rose because Drakkar siphoned power from the Sons of Svanir (as they were thinking of doing such to Drakkar), and fed Jormag said siphoned power so that Jormag could rise. Supposedly, the death of Svanir also pushed Jormag back (per a subliminal hint by Glint about the dragon*s* stirring in the past, and were put back to sleep – it was plural, so likely wasn’t referring to just Primordus).

It seems that, without aid, the Elder Dragons will slumber for far longer than they would otherwise – Kralkatorrik woke, seemingly, on his own, and it is implied that Glint’s actions delayed him by 300-ish years (though that may be poetic rounding, as it’s more likely to be roughly 250 years – this being referenced at the same time as the mention above).

Zhaitan and the DSD may have held similar aid. In Sea of Sorrows, the leviathan known as “The Maw” was around in Orr before his rise for some years, and though never outright called undead at that point, it certainly was very resilient – much like its later undead reappearance – to the various assaults on it. It is possible that The Maw – or even something from GW1 (cough Rotscale cough) – was aiding Zhaitan’s rise.

Left alone, one would expect Mordremoth to awake about 50 years from now – as each Elder Dragon have been waking in a gap of 50 years from others. And the first two to wake, had aid while the last to wake was being fought against rising.

So what would a dragon have need for a giant drill? To reach magical currents to be used to aid the dragon in rising – as they need magic to rise in the first place.

I think I’ve solved the mystery:

She’s digging her way to a Deux Ex Machina. She’ll dig up something that we haven’t heard about or seen before, and which comes right the taff out of nowhere.

That wouldn’t be a Deus Ex Machina (although it may be a Deux Ex Machina?). Deus Ex Machina originates in old Greek plays where at the end the gods would decent from above (usually on a pulley or some other form of machina) and would swiftly resolve the story. Now in modern times this usually refers to something or someone magically appearing out of nowhere and resolving the plot (usually their appearance has no ties to the plot or has not been built up to). By definition her digging something up (unknown or not) would be well outside Deus Ex Machina as the plot so far has been building up toward this. You might however say “but if it’s some unknown thing then it must be Deus Ex Machina”, well no by that definition every reveal, twist or turn in every fictional story ever would be a Deus Ex Machina. All mystery would be Deus Ex Machina, all big reveals etc etc.
A literal Deus Ex Machina would be if the gods descended from the sky in the next patch and swiftly swatted the big drill out of the sky. Since the gods have not been hinted at (only player speculation so far), and by all account have no relation in this plot.

Actually, we’ve had confirmation by now that the Living World happens after the Personal Story.

Fair enough, but I think to save ourselves from insanity, we should stick to the most recent confirmation at hand – and it sounded like they finally have a plan in mind as to how to deal with this timelines issue, which adds even more weight to this recent one!
(Here’s to hoping that it will be the last confirmation needed in this matter haha)

I think MadQueen didn’t mean a literal deus ex machina in any case, just poking fun at the fact that most of the stuff so far has been pulled somewhat out of nowhere.

But actually I think it would be hilarious if it would turn out to be an actual deus ex machina as you described, as in the Six descend and blast Scarlet away.

(The sudden existence of leylines also feels kind of deus ex machina-ish, as in it’s something which came out of nowhere to answer and supply convenient plot points)

They ley lines are far from dues ex machinas, given that they were revealed – albeit out of game – months before they were revealed in-game, and even then we know about them a month and a half before they became relevant in the plot. A dues ex machina would be no supposition at all – ley lines just have bad supposition.

Like 99.999999% of the living world plot, tbh.

Mordemoth. It’s too easy, too obvious. Whispers “from the forest”? Villain a Sylvari, vunerable only to Plant Dragon? Reveal of Great Jungle Wurm spawning Husks? Digging into Leylines to mess up even more with magic and awaken another said “guardian”, Mordemoth? Caithe’s secret?
I’d really want to see something else, maybe anything connected with less plant-ish/asur-ish lore, but little hopes for that.

Really I think some things are just poetically said, we shouldnt take everything litterary. So far there isnt really a dragon that fist everything perfect we have seen so far. It could also be Jormag for all we know. He is a dragon with whispers of power etc.

Look beyond the obvious…

Oh I know, I just like being pedantic, it one of my defining characteristics. Like it almost as much as being facetious.
