The paths leading to being a revenant
The thing to becoming a literal “revenant” (as opposed to being a person who has studied how to use the Mists like it seems to imply) is that you need to leave Tyria before you can return. Being defeated does not necessarily work in all cases, as it’s not death.
As I see it, we have two options:
1.) We physically leave the physical world and enter the Mists through a portal or tear of some kind, and return
2.) You might be able to argue that your character suffered a near-death experience in which case their spirit may have departed for the Mists, and while there were imparted with the skills to become a revenant, but a timely rescue and a long recovery eventually ended up to their return to life.
In the latter case though, it would be almost impossible to pull off without some kind of rescue. People who are left on the battlefield to die either get up and go home or just perish due to blood loss. They would need to be rescued from certain death for #2 to work.
Also, if the first point is correct (meaning a revenant is someone who has gone into the Mists and returned), doesn’t that make every Norn shaman a revenant because they are fully capable of opening portals to the Mists for themselves and others, and successfully return in most cases.
Just entering the Mists is obviously not enough to make someone a revenant. Our characters have traveled into the mists all the time through the use of asura gates into WvW and Heart of the Mists, not to mention the Fractals of he mists. Something else must have happened to Rytlock.
