Q:

Mesmer have access to a variety of move that manipulate something called “Ether.”

  • Ether Bolt
  • Ether Blast
  • Ether Clone
  • Ether Feast
  • Signet of the Ether

Has it ever been explained as to what this is? I assume it’s what Mesmer clones and phantasms are made out of, and that may possibly explain why they can strike physical objects. I always figured that illusions were in some way solid and they appeared however the Mesmer wants them to be, so I could see Ether being some kind of magical.. substance(?) that makes up the clones form, and could explain why Mesmers get MORE life back for having more clones up when using Ether Feast

It’s just a common fantasy term for magical energy basically. In some old beliefs, it’s what was believed the heavens (or Heaven) was made of (more or less).

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Ether is likely one of the many many types of magical energy in Tyria, similar to the arcane energy used by elementalists. It seems to me that it has something to do with the Mists. Weapons like Vision of the Mists have a similar appearance to a mesmer’s ether energy.

Looking at how the term is used in both games, I’d say it’s the kind or form of energy or energy-infused intangible material mesmers use in their magic. I think it’s jumping the gun a bit to say which it is- Tyria, like the ancient European societies who conceived of aether, has not broken down their conception of the universe to the modern dichotomy of matter and energy, and in any event such a dichotomy may not be possible in Tyria.

I concur that it is probably what makes up mesmer illusions and basic weapon attacks, and why those things cause more damage than you’d expect from light.

Ether is the stuff that up untill Einstein was believed to be what filled outer space. The tought was that light needed some form of medium to move through like waves in a pond need water. Projecting that idea onto tyria it would not so much be the magic but the medium that magic needs to be transmitted.

@2nd post

If Ether is magic… what is arcane? I mean, there must be a reason the devs added both names.

Ether seems, in GW2, to be used for clones and energy blasts, and in GW1, to add to one’s energy or drain an opponent’s, oftentimes with a corresponding change in health, which is how the modern elementalist still uses it. Arcane is used in both games as a sort of blank slate magic, in GW2 something an elementalist can add their attunement to without altering the basic nature of the spell, and in GW1 something that mesmers could utilize to temporarily use someone else’s spells.

Ether skills might not even be the use of magic itself but more a manipulation of the medium itself to alter the flow of magic in the area. A bit like spirit weapons are only part magic and part communing with spirits.
