Arise, opressed of Tyria!
Why is the Vigil named the Vigil??
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
I think the awakeness is the entire point. They are vigilant and watchful when others “sleep”.
Well english isn’t my native language, but I always thought Vigil means something like night watch. So guards that stay up to protect something while others go to sleep. Metaphorically that would mean that they stay alert so that others can sleep peacefully.
That. ^ Better than I put it.
Because they are vigilant? No need to read too much into it.

This is why both are named such.
The statue was likely called such because it is the only statue in the Crystal Desert still standing – thus it’s a statue standing all alone while the others are fallen (it’s “awake” while others are “asleep” metaphorically).
The Vigil is called such because they’re always ready to act.
