I know im prolly hunting a ghost, but after I tried searching the gw1 wiki for the term vigil i was shocked that one of my favourite landmarks showed up:

If you compare the armor of the statue the gloves and specially the boots have even some simularity’s with the vigil armor in gw2 (though the helmet is totallydifferent and the rest is too less to recognise).

Is anyone of you prepared to give their own insights bout the simularity’s between the term. Do we know why Almorra named it the Vigil??

The durmand priory name originates really clearly with Durmand. The OoW means they hide in whispers and are spies. But where does the name Vigil come from (beside from english meaning the eve of war, and the awakeness)??

Arise, ye farmers of all nations
Arise, opressed of Tyria!

I think the awakeness is the entire point. They are vigilant and watchful when others “sleep”.

Well english isn’t my native language, but I always thought Vigil means something like night watch. So guards that stay up to protect something while others go to sleep. Metaphorically that would mean that they stay alert so that others can sleep peacefully.

You don’t win friends with salad! Sorry I just got caught up in the rhythm.

Because they are vigilant? No need to read too much into it.

vigĀ·il
[vij-uhl] Show IPA
noun
1.
wakefulness maintained for any reason during the normal hours for sleeping.
2.
a watch or a period of watchful attention maintained at night or at other times: The nurse kept her vigil at the bedside of the dying man.
3.
a period of wakefulness from inability to sleep.
4.
Ecclesiastical .
a.
a devotional watching, or keeping awake, during the customary hours of sleep.
b.
Sometimes, vigils. a nocturnal devotional exercise or service, especially on the eve before a church festival.
c.
the eve, or day and night, before a church festival, especially an eve that is a fast.

This is why both are named such.

The statue was likely called such because it is the only statue in the Crystal Desert still standing – thus it’s a statue standing all alone while the others are fallen (it’s “awake” while others are “asleep” metaphorically).

The Vigil is called such because they’re always ready to act.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
