I notice almost everyone here says the living world is too temporary.. Shouldn’t this ring a bell for Anet and change it to 4 weeks or another period instead of only 2 ?

Still wonder why they keep holding on to their 2 weeks, it will only result into more bad content that is rushed way too hard, and will be full with bugs, which will annoy the devs and the players. Heck, at this rate, I’m thinking about never bothering with the living story in the future, or just quit gw2..

This LS was really fast to complete. I play 1-2 hrs daily, and in 3-4 days I already had it, since even the dailies gives you achievements towards it. So, 2 weeks to 1 month shouldn’t be a problem, even with casual players.

Besides, guys, the LS prizes aren’t sooooo life-changing. If you fail to get a mini or a bag with coins, what’s the problem? The game is still there, and you can keep enjoying it.

imho, the problem here is that you don’t enjoy the game per sé, but rush through it trying to get every achievement. Stop running, and start enjoying this beautiful game. Enter the LS and read the story, and if you complete it or don’t, is secondary.

Once said that, it sounds like a good idea to keep the best parts of the game as fractals or something like that. You can’t keep ALL the temporary content (or our game client will grow and grow and grow…) but it should be nice to keep some dungs and events in a time-warping-zone or something like that. C’mon, guys, we have the technology and the magic: why not?

I cannot play everything, but too sum it up, I see 4 problems and have a pretty obvious suggestion for each.
<snip>

  1. Confusing. There are small mails and some actions like special foes and signs on the map. You have to read into the matter in your blogs and especially for new players new in the world are these too much to understand.
<snip>

I didn’t know there WAS a story with any of the updates until I started reading this forum and running into posts on peoples’ theories about Scarlet’s identity. My first thought: Scarlet? Who’s Scarlet?

I missed everything in Flame and Frost, Southsun, the Aetherblade stuff… all of it… because I couldn’t figure out where to go or who to talk to in order to get going on the story. I did stumble into Brahm’s story instance, which was great until I got to the end and couldn’t finish it because I couldn’t take the final boss by myself. (Which was really frustrating, but since I had no idea what the instance was about, really, or how it connected to the signposts and stuff, I wasn’t motivated enough to try to come back and finish it.)

Too late I stumbled on the story instance where the council is attacked, but that was on the last day or two of that LS so I didn’t have time to follow the story any further. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I would swear there were no instructions to help me know I had to pass by that cordoned-off area in Lion’s Arch and stop to watch if I got lucky and they had the event “up”. I’m almost certain there were times I went there and tried to interact with the starred person and they told me to come back some other time.

If the story is truly being told outside the game, that’s pretty close to a deal-breaker for me. I am that rarest of all creatures — a female gamer over the age of 40 :-) I don’t have much time to game let alone to go off and read forums all the time to keep up with the story my game is supposed to be telling. And I’m never going to be able to really integrate with social media the way my kids do.

But if there are more pointers inside the game than a cryptic email and gold-starred NPCs that rarely tell me anything directly useful, please let me know what they are so I can be looking for them.

Look, I’ll make a little list:

1) Daily pve or pvp
2) Monthly pve or pvp
3) I want to help the guild with guild missions
4) Living story every 2 weeks
5) Would be nice if I could do a daily cof run for equipping new characters and to get a little bit of gold
6) Leveling a new character
7) Play some wvw
8) Do fractals

Oh wait, why am I even writing these things down? That list isn’t even complete, but at the same time it’s already more than I can handle.. I’m what, lv 7 or something on fractals.. I barely wvw, I skip pvp a lot, I don’t bother with stories or lore anymore, I don’t bother with main story of characters or map completion, oh wait, I even stopped leveling characters, I just crafted my second one to 80 which is lame. These days I don’t even do a daily cof run anymore and I’m thinking about not really bothering with the living story either.. And for those people that want or have a legendary, well, I’d love that too, they look awesome, but I will never ever get one, it’s impossible for me and I don’t mind.

Does my situation sound familiar to someone?
I’m pretty sure there are a lot of people out there who can’t handle the living story in 2 weeks time only. So if it would be there a little bit longer, that would be nice. If not, so be it, doesn’t really matter much, it’s just a game after all.

False: When things change, I will be happy.
True: When I am happy, things will change.

You presume 1-2 hours daily is the standard? Let me give you a slight hint. It’s not. It’s not rare for people to have been on a holiday in this month, entirely missing out on 2 content cycles. Let me rephrase that. It’s the default for people to go on holiday in the summer, entirely or partly missing out on 2 updates cycles.

Not that I mind my holiday nor the frequent content, but it does leaves a sour taste about GW2. I really like GW2, it’s the only videogame I play. Missing content is like missing the quarter finals in a major league or an episode of lost, except you can rewatch them at your leisure if you’d like. Just to put this in perspective. I don’t see videogames as any different from other hobbies.

If I can’t play Guild Wars 2 at work, I won’t work in Guild Wars 2 either.
Delayed content is eventually good. Rushed content is eternally bad. ~ Shigeru Miyamoto

I think we definitely need some permanency here. I know A-net said they want to increase the amount of permanent content, but right now I’m not feeling it. If I could add a suggestion for them, if they are going to continue 2 week content, like other posters said, add more cohesion and a sense of the world changing. If this is the replacement for a full length campaign, than piece meal me a campaign, expand the map every couple of weeks, with personal story/missions that are directly related to an eventual full campaign and a climactic boss like Abbadon. To add an example we’ll use the GW1 Winds of Change updates. While these had quite a bit of time between releases due to the small development team, the releases had a solid story arch that was cohesive, included difficult missions (Norm, and Hard mode), rewards (weapons, heroes etc…), and some permanent content to the game on top of what was already there.
Move GW2’s time frame forward, I still feel like Zhaitan is a threat with risen around. Give the players an option like in Winds of Change, move forward through time or backward to previous time periods. In this example it would be Orr, I want to see Orr “healing” and rebuilding, the debilitated corruption leaving replaced by new content fresh building, factions setting up on the island, maybe Trahearne leading an effort to rebuild with players helping make decisions in the building of a new city of Orr. Separate servers for “old” Orr and “rebuilding” Orr.

Personally, I just stopped trying to do living world. Which is rather sad, but it is the best choice. I like how living world tries add more to the game, tell stories, and keep things changing. But it just moves far too quick and has too much. Back when it started, I kept up with most of it, although I never got all the audio logs and I was busy and missed the final dungeon (which was really disappoint). Then I did manage to get most of the released after that. The main one I missed were ones like Dragon Bash where you had to eat all the candy, launch all the fireworks, and fight all the holograms. Since the announcement of releases every two weeks though, I pretty much stopped trying.

I think the main problem is that a lot of the content from living story is geared towards active players. Most of it seems to be stuff you can easily do if you play daily or every other day. For example, if you are out exploring the owrld already, stuff like holograms from dragon bashes or the drop boxes from the sanctum are easy to get. But if you don’t have the time to run around for hours a week and tend to just log on occasionally do something like a dungeon, those achievements are such an hassle. I have to go out of my way to run around the world just to try and find those silly little things for the achievement.
Maybe part of the reason is that they aren’t present in all forms of content and are mainly limited to the open world. It may be that way to encourage people to go out into the open world, but that is the wrong way to do it. When the election story was up, the events in queensdale was swarmed and I could barely get to many in time. The story achievements didn’t help make the area more playable by making people want to go there, it just had masses grinding the events making it harder for people actually there outside of the event.

Overall, I do like a lot about the living story. I like how you get the rewards from the meta achievements. I just don’t like how many of those achievements along the way require out of the way tasks and grinding of silly things. I don’t mind if it wants me to launch a few fireworks or eat a some candy, but the amounts required for that stuff seem way higher than they need to be. I don’t think anyone, even the people who play daily, really want to spend their time doing that. More of the achievements should be about trying things once and watching the story unfold than the silly grinding.
I do like how stories are posted on the website to give more depth into things. Although I also feel like a lot of the stories feel a bit worn after a while. Like I don’t mind we went back to southsun cove, but it just felt the same as the first time. Very little seemed to be added or changed. There were some nice new events and the story wasn’t bad. But the landscape was the same. No vistas were added. No new creatures or anything. The aetherblades are starting to feel the same way. I am tired of them being behind everything evil of late and wish they could take a week off to let some new threat, even an old one like the inquest, do something for a change.

Also, I don’t see why so much of the story is temporary. If players did it later does it really take away from it that much? I mean I did the dungeons out of order yet I still enjoyed the story of them. Hopefully more permanent content, like dungeons, are added with the stories in the future.

In conclusion, I wouldn’t really say living stories are bad as is. I feel they move to quickly and don’t focus enough on the story aspect of it. I don’t mind if there are some silly, grindy achievements, but I wish they were scaled back far more. The first living story is probably my favorite because it was mostly going around and watching cutscenes as it unfolded. I wish we had more things like that than things that make us put off things we want to do to go spend an hour working on an achievement.
I really do hope the living stories become more slowly paced. Because currently I am not around enough to get the monthly achievement and having living story on rapid fire isn’t making me want to try any more. I just see it as something I won’t get to finish so it makes me want to avoid it and do other things, outside of guild wars 2, that I can see through more easily.

I am upset because I have many hobby’s I like to do. I like to play lots of different games. However the Living Story makes me feel like I cant take a break from GW to play something else for a bit unless I want to miss events, items, story(not much story atm.)

My suggestion is longer than 2ish weeks per event.

I can empathize with having a busy life and not always being able to fit my gaming schedule in between work, home life, and social commitments. Your comments are not lost on us.

We’re exploring some ideas for the future, including a system that would allow certain bits of Living World content to be accessed independent of the release. Plans and designs have not been solidified yet, so I want to temper your expectations. But if you have any opinions on the matter feel free to let us know. We’re already looking at ways to leave some LW content behind to evolve Tyria and improve the game. This would be one element of it, should we decide to build such a feature.

1st off, i have plenty of time so im not gonna complain about the timeframe that is needed for the living story content (called “LC” from here on).
That being said:

How about making a VM on the servercluster that creates a kind of overflow with specific content and make a pull-down option so the players can choose to connect to these overflows. (sort of like the guesting system)
When the LC is finished these overflows let the users play this specific LC by choosing it when they want.
All tough i have no idea is this is technically possible it may be a good solution.

Many may say well just don’t play the Living World content but with the benefits of playing being so significant (Mining node in home instance) I have to try and get it done before being able to do anything else.

that extra crystal node is just about the least significant thing in the entire game.

this is just a matter of learning to ignore your completionist tendencies to focus on game play you enjoy rather than on maximizing your reward/time ratio.

What are you talking about..insignificant? Without the crystals and the corresponding recipe sheets you cant make any of the Celestial armor or weapons. How is that not significant.

Plus to the OP point this permanent node was acquired in temporary content which doesn’t sit well with me either.

I also hate deadlines. I play games to get away from that type of crap in real life..to relax and enjoy the experience. This is getting ruined by having these pointless deadlines on temporary content that would make more sense to be temporary through a characters personal story progression not temporary based on a date. One thing I just cant understand is why the hell Anet would put so much effort into making content that goes away? Adding more content is great but taking it away defeats the purpose unless they are trying to panic there player base into always playing just in case. Eventually people will get burnt out and just remember a long term bad feeling associated with GW2. I dont think that makes sense.

That would be a GREAT addition Bobby. I understand holiday events and stuff are there only for when they take place, makes sense. I do hope that storydriven things will become somehow repeatable in the future. Something I would suggest regardless is a ‘log’ or journal like that of your personal story but about the Living Story. Explaining what happened in each chapter so new players or those coming back know what’s been going on.

On a personal note: I would like to see the achievements related to the dungeons come back (especially since AR and MF are coming back as Fractals). At the time AR was a bit buggy and due to the limited time and challenge (which I welcome) it was difficult to do the Mai Trinn fight without getting hit by the cannons or the Asura fight without getting hit by the lasers. Both of these are actual achievements (more of these) and I welcome this challenge. I hope achievements like these can be brought back in the Fractals to give other players a whack at it too. Items and all that shouldn’t be brought back to have some sense of value, but I don’t see why achievements can’t be.

Thanks for this bit of info Bobby.

Which means it has nothing to offer. The living world that requires the players to check the forum outside the game and obliges the players to finish repetitive grinding tasks within a short period of time is really an epic suck. The ridiculous 5-year-old little games with low quality cartoon items further made me sick.

These things are totally contrary to the reasons for which I “invested my time” in this game: the flexibility from soloing to grouping anytime anywhere and the dynamic personal story development. I can’t find the current updated contents relaxing or challenging.

I really cannot understand how a good development team got so distracted into these side stories which do not contribute to personal character development or to the main world.

Now I am into the Elder Scrolls V Skyrim, The Witchers 3 Wild Hunt, and Thief Uprising, I think they will be much more entertaining. Honestly, many good stories may occur in Tyria. There can be a master thief story line, there can be a witch’s story line, there can be an ancient magician’s story line that can stay in Tyria for always or recur every week but I just don’t get the concept of these living worlds and childish little games.

I didn’t play for probably more than 6 months. Well I like my tree man in Tyria. If there are good stories written for him, I am sure he will be back to Tyria.

Living Story is the most horrible thing that has ever happened to this game or any MMO in general. Temporary content destroys any enjoyment I have in games. The truth is I have no time and OCD when it comes to these things. I need to get any new items/recipes/abilities/content that will be gone in two weeks because I simply can’t leave it knowing it will be lost forever. Living story makes it so that I am not able to ever play the game for fun, this is especially true of the most recent Living Story updates. They are TOO GRIND HEAVY, when I bought Guild Wars I was under the impression that I could play a game casually and enjoy the world without being forced to endure periods of boring grinding or frustrating temporary content. Living Story has robbed Guild Wars of everything that made it special. It is no longer a fun game. Guild Wars 2 has become a chore especially since Living Story began to be released every two weeks. In addition to the boredom the pressure to finish it within the time limit when I have no time due to a busy life Living Story is absolutely ruining the economy something that is especially frustrating to me because I am studying Economics and because the Economy is so important to the health of an MMO. I hate playing the game right now and will probably quit soon if Living Story continues the way it is going. The very least A-net can do is make living story release every 4-6 weeks and make it less grindy although in truth they should scrap the idea completely and focus on making good content not trashy filler.
Thanks and I really hope a dev can read this

Really, monthly updates were ok, gave causal players like me time to enjoy the content. New Bi-weekly schedule don’t. Last update i actually played was Flame&Frost: Retribution, since then i’ve been missing everything. And there are achievements, items and titles that probably will never be available again… living story fast paced event rate makes me sad.

I’ve lost interest in GW2 more and more since the onset of the lightning round (updates every other week). I think it is because I felt the F&F was an interesting concept (events unfolding over time in one region of the world) and it’s major flaw was that it was too few additions per patch. Now we have fast updates, but it’s no longer a living story it’s just a new circus in town every two weeks with merely tenuous connections. I dont like it that way.

My ideal living story format would be similar to F&F:
- a longer campaign with 3-4 chapters that bring changes every 2-4 weeks (similar to now, F&F was too little/slow for the first months)
- organically meshes with the existing world. It should actually lead to significant permanent change (missed opportunity: explorable remnants of molten facilities, cragstead part of the open world with skill challenge and vista)
- a nice story arc (done well in F&F), content for solo and group play (done well in F&F except for the conclusion to the story being locked away from solo players).

Things that I didnt like over the summer:
focus on instanced mini-games throughout several releases, new open world area that is removed again after the event, excessive “click this 250 times, kill 250 world spawn pirates” tasks masquerading as content, 1-room “dungeons” (Canach story parts were tiny/bad), over-use of high tech solutions (holograms etc), probably some other things I forget, and finally I really dislike Scarlet and that she’s supposed to the link pulling it all together. That’s opinion of course but I dont seem to be alone on that last part.

Things I did like over the summer:
Southsun open world changes, Aetherblade retreat (too hard for temp content though, should’ve left a permanent version and it would share “best dungeon” with MF), revisiting Southsun and picking those story characters up again (hope we see Noll again), the outdoor design of the airship dockside cliffside (hated that it was temporary and not accessible by walking there though), detective story parts of Sky Pirates, NPCs remembering my character and deeds (though it was botched at some points, and its unfortunately per account not per character).

the world is too temporary for me. the LS content didn’t come anywhere close to what was said before the game was launched about how the open world would be the central focus of the updates or how they’d be permanent and span the whole world not just centralized places or fractals.

There were multiple reasons for me to stop playing and the LS content being as it is was one of them. I’m now watching to see if they fix all of the current problems that caused me to leave to see if/when it’s safe to come back.

These threads don’t get the attention in the larger game world that it needs.

Real life or disability – the two things that this game has not addressed – yes there are many who can play this game 24/7 if they wish, but those of us in the other two aforementioned camps bought the game too – and we would like the devs to know we are waiting…

especially when people have to actually do stuff in real life xD

I kinda raged when I missed out on a whole living world event since it bugged which means I was never able to complete it because they never fixed it before the next one came out.

I really thought labyrinthine cliffs was cool and i really want to go back there and do achievements and stuff I didn’t have time to do when it was around, for example like completing all Belcher’s Bluff achievements.

I’ve missed out on quite a bit of story and don’t know what the hell is going on in Living World now lol.

if u dont put any reward ppl dont join the event, if u put a good reward ppl farm event, so like this one everyone left all the game for farming, just do something that u can take reward once per week, so everyone can choose 1 hr per week to enjoy the lw content and they will do cause have a good reward, and the other time we have, we can do all that we want… atm gw2 it become like other mmo, too many farm

its not that there are too many farms, its that there is only one good one at a time, and ANet likes to punish everyone for farming the content because w have to do it while we have the chance to before it gets nerfed. instead of anet going back to a regular concept of grind with a much more relaxed DR grind system, they insist on psuedo-portraying a “casual” gaming environment.

this forces players to, yet again, farm while the farming is good and available before it gets nerfed the kitten to hell.

all the evidence is in front of them, its too bad that Gem Store is the bottom line now -a-days

I agree that the LS is moving along too fast, and with too much grinding in each of them for a casual player to get all the achievements. And I also feel that the story is often rushed, and lack polish and character developments.

So:

-Slow down the LS releases. Tell the story at a much slower pace but tell a better story. This isn’t a race.
-Reduce the grinding needed for achievements and rewards. For example doing those “Scarlet Invasions” just once (which takes an hour) should be enough to get all the achievements and rewards for it. Extra grinding is only for extra rewards.
-Spend more time on story polish and character developments. This isn’t a race. Slow things down and make them better.

You living story gaves peoploe no time to enjoy yhe world of the game. All achievements are so time consuming and the grind you introduced to the GW2 is really stupid.

For your info ANet many people already left due to frustration with Living Story Race and next time show us statistics how many people stopped playing istead of how many bought the game.

People chose GW2 because Its not as grindy as other MMOs. But the living world is taking all the time i have for playing the game. I like leveling alts, doing bosses and dungeons, but I cant. And its not because I am a completionist… I like to experience the living world and be part of it.

Please, make temporary updates once a month and use the other middle of the month update for permanent content like dungeons rework, bug fixes, etc.

I haven’t read most of these post, and I think most of the subjects for it has been covered, but I’d like to voice my opinion as well. I do enjoy the Living World Content, having something new to do is always enjoyable, much better than the “other” game which every year we have the same old repeatable content for the particular month/time frame. However the negative side is that if you missed TLW content for that particular time, you can’t do them ever (at this time anyways). While I understand that none of these content would give me a leg up in terms of gameplay, part of me is annoyed at not being able to complete these event as well.

My job sometimes require me to be away from a gameable computer months at a time, and even when that is not the case I have other things to deal with. Having TLW/events rolling out every month does put a bit of pressure for me to do them and not relax and enjoy the basic parts of the game (just WvW, SPvP, run some dungeons). Because of the limited time I feel as if I am “forced” to prioritize TWL content over the other aspect, and sometimes doing those events I feel rushed rather than entertained. I do know that this is mostly my peronality that cause this, I could easily jump between the WvW/SPvP/PvE anytime and enjoy the aspect of the game as I wish, but I’d like to see everything the dev’s have to offer, plus I might regret not doing the contents later simply because I can do the basic things “any other time”.

Fractals of the Mists provide answer only for part of the problem – dungeons (like the Aether hiding spot back in Sky Pirates of Tyria – at least I think it was during that LW). But no matter their gameplay qualities, dungeons are interchangeable. Go there, kill mobs, avoid traps, get a grand chest and a pat on the back. Don’t get me wrong, that in and of itself can be great and awesome. But if you miss it, there’s gonna be another following the same recipe.

Same goes for the achievements – they hand in nice rewards, but if you miss them, nothing terrible happens. If you don’t have the time in two weeks to gather 200 bear butts and bring them to an NPC, there will be some other quest in the future to give you the very same 10 Achievement points you’d get otherwise.

The actual problem with Living World being temporary is the story – especially since the story is evolving, continues from previous instances. And that’s the part that gets missed the most, at least by myself. I came back to the game after about four hours of being unable to play it, only to find a world changed (which is awesome) without virtually no chance of catching up to it (which is terrible). My first encounter with GW after that time was like: Ooo, nice, looks like the great collapse is a go. Wait, who’s Aetherblades. Who’s Molten Alliance? Why are they trying to kill me?! Who’s this charr? Why does she behave like she has a backstory? I’m supposed to vote? Who’s Ellen Kiel? Why should I root for her? Why is there a void seat on the council all of a sudden?

The game itself does drop vague idea of what happened beforehand, usually counting to a very nice “Yeah, since event XY, we live like that”, not counting on players that have lived under the proverbial rock and have no kitten idea.

Thus far, the only way to catch up to the world is hours of reading the wikipedia. Which is not how I imagine playing a game. That’s something I doubt any fractal dungeons will fix.

I love the living story content. Its very fun and entertaining to me. How ever having burned my self out on gw2 I took a 3 month leave. I missed a bunch of content. I’m saddened by that, because I missed out on a bunch of lore and skins. I like the idea of having dungeons introduced by lw but they should be permanent leave them as mini dungeons or something. As trying to get gear can rather expensive since it was temporary.

I don’t mean the classic ragequit, but when I play a game (particularly an MMO, because they do have content added and do not remain stagnate like other video game genres) I expect to play it for a while, perhaps take a break, but have a memorable journey lasting a considerable amount of time.

With school, I disappear when a term starts (and when going through Summer term, too…) and by that time the expansion alternative, “Living World”, has disappeared and all the heroism too.

If I do not see any expansion— a FULL expansion with dungeons, maps, races, professions, weapons, enemies, storylines, heroes, NPCs, bosses, etc.— I probably will quit. I don’t want to invest time into a game that simply remains in the same place.

And although Living World progresses Tyria’s story 5 steps forward, removing it later or disabling the majority of the released content sometime afterwards, takes it 5 steps backwards.

I recognize that holiday events are exactly like this: temporary. But they’re meant to be and expected to be. I don’t want to celebrate Christmas all year or the Dragon Festival for 10 months.

But these are my thoughts. Expansions, with the magnitude I described, develop and enhance the game because they are permanent and I can return or abandon them at any point I wish. Which follows Anet’s “no subscription fee” policy: stopping or continuing as you desire.

Living World, thus far with Flame/Frost, SAB, Aetherized Pirates, Queen’s Jubilee feels childish, temporary and leaves the entire game feeling stagnate and unmoving. My shortbow’s range might have changed since the original release, or a new skin and boss might be added, but I am still just fighting Dredge, exploring AC, and slaying the same Zhaitan with the same Trahearne.
