Silverwaste Shovels
While traversing around the Silverwastes, you will see occasional mounds of sand on the ground. That is where a chest is hidden for which you can use a shovel to dig it up.
Upon double clicking a shovel, you are given 2 skills to use; the first is to dig up where you are standing, which will uncover a chest if you are standing above a mound of sand (and you can use this skill as many times as you like until you dig up a chest successfully). The second skill will show you any buried chests that are close to you.
I recommend you use them if you are ever on a chest farm Silverwastes map, as then your shovels will benefit a lot of players rather than just yourself and a couple of others. But that is entirely up to you.
They last until you use them. Once you equip one, you can run all over the place hitting the 2 skill to fire off green arrows to the nearest chest(s); when you get on top of a chest mound and hit 1, the shovel is gone but the chest is open for you and anyone else nearby with a bandit key.
If you don’t have a key, don’t use your shovel. You can buy the keys from the SW vendors for Bandit Crests.
They last until you use them.
Not entirely true. They DO have a time limit on them, but it seems relatively forgiving. I’m guessing probably 10 or so minutes. I’ve had one or two expire on me when I was running with a chest farm and the people at the front of the group kept using their own shovels before I got mine.
If you’re just running around an empty map looking for stuff yourself, though, very little chance you won’t find something before the time limit cuts in.
Though it should be noted that I believe you do lose it if you go down / die while using it, so take care around groups of enemies.
Can using skill No. 2 “destroy” the shovel, like using skill No.1 does?

Yes, but it is very small.
Skill #2 has a small chance of destroying the shovel, but the shovel itself will also despawn from not being used to dig something up for too long. You will get used to spotting the mounds after you have dug a few up, and thus you won’t need to use skill #2 as often.
Skill #1 on the other hand will instantly break the shovel only if it manages to dig up a buried chest.
