Silverwastes Leechers
I agree that afkers are one problem this game has that it needs a solution to at some point, if it’s going to go from being a good game to a great one. (my opinion only).
I love the ones who participate in the boss fight and then go stand on a ledge where they aren’t attacked. The whole event is about to fail due to the loss of siege carriers and they do nothing.

Maybe if you afk in an event a timer can trigger and you’re kicked in less time than if you afk in Lion’s arch.
I think any area or map that is that finicky about how many people and where they’re at should be a personal or group instance. It’s an open world area as far as this game has, one person standing still in MMORPG should not set the world off balance. In the short term, I seem to be specifically targeted by quite a few things in that zone that fall from the sky or launched from some bad guy, I’m not sure if it’s coded this way already, but those smart bombs should target and drop on players wherever they were at once that bomb was launched rather than a patch work drop somewhere in the event area. So, even if someone is standing on the edge of the event tucked away someplace, they’ll still need to step aside or dodge. Or, just have some assassin looters prowl around event spots to attack players who aren’t registering any action as long as the event is active.

My problem is that in pretty much every corner of this game you find people leeching / farming / afking. It’s gotten crazy. People at world boss chains don’t do pre-events. SW has people afking on the cliffs. WvW has people farming OS and kill trading. PvP has win-trading.
I’m pretty much done I think.

The consolation prize is that in most cases it doesn’t effect you at all. They are being stupid and wasting their time in a game they aren’t even actually playing, and if it was a single player game they would be using cheat codes or mods to the point it plays itself.
This instance is one of the worst because it negatively effects everyone else.
I just wish there was some kind of participation timer even. So if you don’t continue to participate you don’t get credit.
I can show up at the end of an event and tag one mob, and there is a risk I won’t get credit. Tag the same mob at the start of an event and do nothing else, it’s practically a guaranteed gold.
There needs to be a much wider disparity between the rewards for bronze, silver and gold, and a wider difference in participation for getting those.
I don’t see ANY reason why the dancing reward chest should even be given if you didn’t get gold, since in it’s current state gold is so kitten easy to get. It’s actually kind of HARD to get bronze intentionally.

I wish they’d implement a reward to those doing the pre-events. If you’ve done “x” number of pre-events, once the final boss is killed, you get at least one extra rare and more of a chance at exotics, plus maybe 20% more karma, gold and experience.

No loot on those mobs mean people aren’t going to bother. Not surprising at all.

Yep, this is a major issue. They solved the problem of failing events to farm mobs but created a different problem, namely afk farming.
A solution to this would be to keep count of each kill a player does (or participates in) during an event and give him a reward at the end of the event based on the number of kills, but only if the event succeeds. Yes, there would be a lot of people running aroung tagging stuff, but I think this would be better than the current system since those players might actually actively participate and would have an active interest in succeeding with the event as soon as possible.
Why do you want to punish ppl instead of making a reward system actually rewarding for participation? Leechers are an effect of a problem. Bad reward distribution design is the cause. Running around and spreading bans or forcing disconnections isnt a solution to anything.
It’s open world, not pvp. When I’m playing open world content I’m getting random event pop ups with rewards and I cant even remember I was doing any event.
So yeah, can’t wait for new threads like this after map reward feature is introduced.

Nobody is crying for bans. We’re talking about ways to get people to do the events, or ways to discourage people from afking AT the event.
Also, another day and I’ve done Silverwastes a few times. On every single map, people are afking or abandoning their lane to move to another lane and hit the boss with the mortar. I’m not exactly sure how to even get feedback from Anet on this issue or if they even care at this point.
It’s very discouraging and if this is what we can expect from HoT, it is a VERY bad sign of things to come.
I never noticed that and I usually do this event 2-3 a day. The event only failed once. Maybe EU servers are super leet or I am just super lucky :-)
‘would of been’ —> wrong
I can’t say for EU, but I can say I did this event several times a day a few weeks ago, and it got to a point where I couldn’t do it and NOT see people afking/ignoring lanes to tag bosses with the mortars. I don’t even go there anymore. Great zone, but the leeching—and especially the mortar stuff—irks me enough that I don’t bother.
I had one person in map chat say that it wasn’t a big deal, mortars or leeching, because the event rarely failed anyway. It’s true that it rarely failed. But I’ve never lost a toe to stubbing it, either, and I still avoid doing that.

Same, haven’t noticed any mortar abuse and very few afkers. We only run into problems when too many new or unskilled players end up on the same lane. They look like they are trying but somehow the health bars on monsters just don’t move. The event is super forgiving though so it almost always still succeeds.
Edit: I mean vinewrath succeeds, breach still fails half the time.
