Has anyone else noticed the Canthan influences they are slowly creeping in to the game? For example, Marjory Delaqua is of Canthan descent, and Mai Trin, although a reference to alcohol, is a typically Canthan name. If we consider the recent rumors of an upcoming expansion as well it all seems as though we could be heading in that direction. What does everyone else think? Noticed any other recent references?

On a side note, Is Kasmeer from Elona? Her skin tone, posture and outfit (The gold one) seem very reminiscent of Nightfall.

Well, Dragon Bash obviously has similarities, but I don’t think it has the purpose of introducing a Canthan expansion. Having said that, I would prefer a Canthan expansion with new content and new worlds over the current living content method. So, I hope you are correct Very correct

We have a lot of distance between us and Cantha. The entire big blue sea that the Krait and Kraka have been retreating from bubbles, for one thing. That’s a far more likely expansion route, which is good since it would involve updates to the underwater combat system. While leaps and bounds above other games we could use more options, less bugs, and mob placement that doesn’t remind one of old school Orr.

With that said, I think they are realizing that the fan reaction is the exact opposite of any internal decision making predicted. Fans love the Canthan culture. We disliked the choice of Factions voice acting (B Movie Oriental Dub), we disliked the STEEP learning curve, and most of us have a deep hatred of Togo…. but we loved everything else about the place.

I do hope we see Cantha eventually. I would also loved to see the Great Collapse repaired into a proper Canthan district for Divinity Reach. I honestly hope that the rumors I heard on a recent podcast about Dougal Keane and a yeti having an adventure pans out.

If there is anything I know about Arena Net, they learn from their mistakes. We want more Cantha in our Guild Wars, so they’ll give it to us eventually.

Maybe in GW1, but that’s not how it works here. Hello AAA Blockbuster, goodbye playerbase.

I do miss Cantha in GW1, but based on how quickly they’re trying to pump out temporary content, I don’t see any kind of expansion coming out in the foreseeable future. Even so, it’ll probably be filled with cutsy quaggan pirates and more badly dialogued banter. And airships. Don’t forget the airships.

I’d love to see a new expansion, even though I’ve barely seen the whole world as it exists in the game currently (then again I only have 397 hours since launch, can’t even compare to some people).

Cantha was pretty amazing in GW1, so I’d love to see it again.

I think ANet have said they have multiple teams working and the largest is actually the team doing permanent world expansion with the second largest being the living content. I could be mistaken though.

The airship came from the southwest.
Cantha is located to the southwest.

Also, if rapiers were unseen in Tyria, they must come from somewhere else…

I’m afraid I agree with the earlier poster, GW2 is a much bigger undertaking then GW1, in a much different environment as far as online gaming goes, and more importantly, as far exploiting online gaming for profit goes. Big changes in direction are highly unlikely, as is putting out content that apparently alienates your publisher and/or part of your playerbase (however reasonable or unreasonable that may be, it was reason enough to nuke a quarter of DR).

I’ll just say dont get your hopes up.

I would love to see a Cantha expansion, I always liked the crowded and winding streets of Kaineng and very much loved it’s flair. Also, I would love to see Jade Quarry return.

The Jade Sea has started to become a liquid again since the defeat of Shiro.

There are references creeping back in, also in the new Sea of Sorrows book for example.
But I think that’s more just that they’ve finally been given the all clear to work on Canthan and Elonan content. It doesn’t necessarily mean it is anywhere near release, just that it will eventually happen.

A LOT of the NPC’s surrounding this event have Canthan roots though, so it does look real suspicious. As you’ve said Mai Trin and Marjory Delaqua, but also one of the Pirate Captains in Lions Arch with Magnus is of Canthan descent and has some rather shifty sounding dialogue.

Wow, so much want for a Canthan expansion to the game. While i would like to eventually return to Cantha; First i want to return to other areas that we have yet to get in game. IE: Ring of Fire, Southern Shiverpeaks, more Maguuma, and Crystal Desert.

I agree. I’d rather explore the area immediately around the main game world than go off to a faraway continent first.

Ring of fire would be good to see, Crystal desert sounds like it’ll be a rainforest.. seen enough of that.

Cantha was great, I’d buy a business class ticket to that place in a second.

YES. There is still a pile of unexplored territory and real opportunity in the existing but unexploited areas already hidden under the “M” key. I’ve been waiting to get back to the Ring of Fire and the Crystal Desert – truth be told, I’d rather see that all panned out before I look into heading off to somewhere new. That said, I do look forward to a trip to Cantha… one day. Just not any time soon.

I heard the Crystal Desert was a savannah now. I wish we had an actual desert environment, I’m not sure Orr counts.

EDIT: I know what you mean about the Rainforests. Some more environment variety would really spice up the game world.

Yeah I would definitely love to see a desert, getting there when doing the trials of ascension in GW1 was among my favourite part of the story, definitely loved how that area felt back then.

I’m not familiar wiht the lore, but is the Crystal Desert supposed to a rainforest instead of a, ya know, desert?

Maybe rainforest was a bit of an overstatement but yeah it’s no longer a desert in the lore, I remember something about a river being diverted and it changed the landscape, have to google it or maybe a lore master can chip in.

It’s why I want to see Cantha, it was so radically different to the original GW, the environments , the feel and everything about it felt really nice.

That’s because when you do go the route of an expansion or new continent it’s normally best to be as different feeling as possible to reinforce that the new area is infact it’s own environment and culture. Otherwise there’d be no point to bother adding new areas if it’s all the same.

I think this new content is also Cantha Oriented. Just speculting, but what if this flying city is made by the Tengu as an attempt to fly back home, and they finally open up the zone that is directly west of Lion’s Arch, where the Canthan descended Tengu are living?

To be honest it looks more Elonan. The Bazaar of the Four winds makes me think about the Kodash Bazaar (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/The_Kodash_Bazaar). It even looks a little similar to the new content.

The tengu consider Tyria their home. They saw the ‘Great Tsunami’ that came with Zhaitan’s rise as a signal to return to their ancestral homelands – Tyria.

However, this bazaar does sound particularly tengu. Mostly due to the ‘Four Winds’. The tengu have four major Houses named North, South, East and West after the winds themselves. It’s entirely possible that the bazaar is related to the tengu, whose primary interaction with the world outside the Dominion of Winds centres around trade.

Psst…there is a big thread on Cantha that has gained dev responses, in case you guys are interested. It’s linked in my signature.

I think an expansion, especially a Canthan expansion, could be a long time in coming but is definitely not out of the question, especially if we ask for it enough.

Devs have recently confirmed that Cantha is not cut from the game, although they have also said it may be a long while before we get to go there.

That does suggest to me more Canthan elements trickling in via living story!! Hooray!

A Dev has spoken:Cantha is definitely not cut from the game

Three points:
1/ I love Cantha, especially the Jade Sea. Though factions was a pure PVP expansion and rather weak on PVE, the environment was beautiful.

2/ While I have a lot of nostalgia, I’m equally interested in new areas: Isles of Janthir, Dominion of Winds.

3/ If nothing substantial can be added, adding areas doesn’t make sense. Crystal Desert and Fire Islands for example has been played out. There’s no direct reason to go back. Maguuma Jungle however has a ton of unexplored lore.

If I can’t play Guild Wars 2 at work, I won’t work in Guild Wars 2 either.
