I really like the idea of earning rewards through playing in the new area, but I don’t like the idea that people are farming until their eyes bleed because they are unlucky with the drop rates for fossilized insects.

I propose that, going forward, ANet uses the model of BL tickets for such rewards:

  • Slightly lower the drop rate of the “ticket” (in this case: fossilized insects)
  • Introduce a new item, analogous to ticket scraps, perhaps fossilized insect fragments.
  • Allow people to turn in e.g. 10 fragments for a full fossil.

Those who are lucky will still be lucky. But those who have bad luck will at least be able to progress towards getting one. (It’s mathematically easy enough to allow the final drop rates to be about the same.)

Got one yesterday and I don’t even want it. They really need to stop making these things account bound!
All I can do is just toss it

If they must have RNG in some form, this would be a good way to at least lessen it for those people with bad luck. Of course, I’d prefer no RNG at all, but… this would help at least.

Or they could slightly adjust the drop rate chance upwards with each box that a player opens.

Or maybe they plan to give players one of these for map completion or something, because map completion usually gives fair rewards.

That wouldn’t address the problem I’ve outlined. If the current drop rate is 1:30, there’s about a 3% chance that you can open 100 chests without finding a fossil. If they change that to 1:25, then it’s about a 2% chance you could still miss out.

Using those numbers, you’d still expect to see from 4 people in a max-sized guild farming 100 chests without luck, instead of 6 in the 1:30 scenario. That seems to me like too many disappointed people.

With a single RNG opportunity, there is always a significant chance that someone will over-farm without reaching their goal and I think the system ought to be set up so that there is almost no chance that people can be that unlucky.

The only other option is to increase the rate until it’s so high that the fossils are common for most people, and that decreases people’s delight in finding them. At a certain point, if the reward is “too easy” to acquire, people don’t appreciate it as much and even resent any of the effort involved.

In short, I’d like the setup modified so that anyone who farms “long enough” is nearly guaranteed (99.9999%) to get at least one shiny.

The one I did get, definitely RNG. I was harvesting a cactus and was able to hit it 4 times and thank goodness it was during a dust storm because I also had some keys so I ran and found a locked box and opened it right away and got the unidentified fossil and some goggles. I doubt that will happen again but it was nice lady luck was kind. Now I got to save up for the recipe (had spent most of my geodes on keys) and hope the server gets to level 4 at some point… but that’s a whole nother story…

Got two in a row last night, after a long spell of nothing. Thats RNG for you. (Or maybe ANet uses a bus timetable).

But at the time of day I usually play T5 is unheard of. T4 isn’t common either. So they are just taking up a bag slot for now. And I’m not sure I want two of these weapons anyway.

I’ll say it again, binding is bad. Make them tradable.

I’d definitely support them being tradable. I don’t really like the Ambrite skins, so there’s absolutely nothing I can do with the Fossils I’ve found. >.> At the very least, make it so that Gentt trades us Geodes/Ambrite for the Fossils, although I still think making the Fossils tradable would make people happy on both sides.

That’s what I said

Still, my preferred option would be one guaranteed fossil as a story reward (meta reward) and we might still get that, who knows.

I think the easiest option would be to just make them tradable to other players, although personally I haven’t had too much trouble getting them and will be able to make all 16 of the weapons for the skins, I know other players who have had to open 100+ chests just for 1 fossil.

Why make sense, when it’s so much more fun to make nonsense?

Yeesh, you’re going to make all 16 and you’re feeling like its “not to much trouble”?

I want maybe 5 of them and I’m already trying to figure out which ones I can do without because I can’t get any of the fossils to save my life.

Exactly what I wanted to suggest, but with even less RNG.

  • Give out guaranteed 1-3 fossil shards per opened chest.
  • Make a complete fossil tradeable for 100 shards.
  • Lower complete fossil drop rates.
  • Even if you fail to get a complete fossil due to RNG, you have a guaranteed fossil after about 50 chests.
  • Frustration removed!
20 level 80s and counting.
