Unidentified fossil rage! Voice your misery!
I’ve gotten 3 of them so far LOL
Got four ambrite weapons now. Just used the keys from the story instance reward + 20 bought ones.
But of course I can understand your anger. As I read the patch notes yesterday, I thought it actually meant that you can get a fossilized insect for those loot bags, and not the other way around. I was a bit confused when I saw that ingame ^^"
I don’t like the skins so I’m praying I don’t get one. They’ll rob me of a drop that I could use/sell.

You still can’t sell them via TP. You can just trade them in for a few bags of rubbish armor/weapons.

I’m not even trying to get unidentified fossils… Just don’t feel like I’m lucky enough to get stuff like that.
You people complain too much.
I’ve opened at least 150+ chests so far, and gotten zero. Am I complaining? No. For two reasons:
1. What’s the rush? The chests have good loot, so I’m going to be farming them anyways. Just because I don’t have a weapon now, doesn’t mean I wont get one later. It’s not a big bother, nor’ do I lose any money trying. (Quite the contrary, chests are quite profitable…)
2. RNG adds a much needed flavour to RPGs like Guild Wars 2, and were long missing since the days of Guild Wars 1. Yes, you reading it right: GW2 needs more RNG. It needs the satisfaction of opening a chest and getting that rare item drop, or at least the excitement of trying for one.
Settle down, Beavis.

There is no rush. its a matter of wanting to know that you will actually be able to get it. I’m fine with working towards something that will take time to get, but its when you don’t even know if you will ever get it that is the problem.

I love it when people convince themselves that purposefully annoying and frustrating game mechanics are a good thing.
I got one, currently resides in my bank because apparently I can not sell it.
I fall right on the fence on this topic. As long as this is permanent content and we can try for as long as we’d like to get the fossils —> skins then I am okay with it being a RNG drop and working hard/getting lucky.
However, if the chests/keys are going to disappear once the season is over or whenever, then I think its a little ridiculous to make something only possible to get through RNG.
But I would warn all that want them to be tradable that if they really are decently hard to come by you are going to have to pay a cost to get them.
My final argument is this, if an item is only available in game and only by RNG then it should be permanent. If it is only or also available on gem store (and probably available again later) then it can be temporary and RNG.
RNG is VERY necessary. If everything is just handed and/or sold to us easily then what is the satisfaction in EVER getting something super rare or nice? :\
^^ I agree. As long as it is something that is not going to disappear then I am willing to wait. I find that the longer I have had to wait, the more excited I am when I finally get it. It just makes the item so much more special to me.

There has been plenty that’s been RNG that’s only been available via the LS. Back item skins and minies from chests like in the Tower of Nightmares. So done be too shocked if they vanish.

My complaint? Accountbound.
I’ve gotten five so far and I’d really rather be able to give them away to people that has bad RNG luck. (Give, not sell.)
I support Tengu as a playable race.

Which is why I’m saying that shouldn’t happen. To be honest though, I don’t 100% care about mini’s.. Skins and stuff are what I am concerned about.

I also agree with this. The only reasoning I see for making a lot of rare things account bound is to prevent them hitting open market and becoming an essential money-maker.

I’ve gotten 5 in fewer than 100 chests. Wish I could give them away but as it is, I’ll probably delete 3 of them.
It took awhile to find 1 last update, but this update I’ve had 3 drop just from the 9 extra keys I got from the LS missions….I assumed the drop rate had been increased, since I was getting nomad recipes at a much higher rate than last LS update.
I’ve gotten one but want more to make a set, but grinding out 450 geodes for ONE recipe just made me quit Dry Top all together. I’d rather go jump off a bridge.

I agree, there needs to be some RNG element. But when everyone else gets a fossil from on avg once every 20 chest and you don’t get it from 95 chest than it starts interfering with your gaming experience. I don’t want to grind 3 hrs a day on Geodes, convert them to keys, open chests for months on end. And if you say that you do I will reply to you with ‘Keep lying to yourself’ you maybe trying to act cool with that ‘meh, i don’t mind attitude’ but you are actually sounding like an…
I like RNG element for precursors, although I do think there needs to be more than 1 way of acquiring them. Crafting has been suggested by many players and I also supports this idea. That doesn’t mean we want crafting precursors to be easier. They can make it so that crafting precursors is equally as difficult and time consuming as current precursor methods. What people are asking for is being rewarded for long term goals and not relying on sheer dumb luck.
I don’t mind being at peace with all that if it was the same for everyone. But it isn’t. They could still keep the RNG loot system and do something to help ease the misfortune of unlucky players. For example, what they could have done is besides the RNG loot system if lets say after 100 chest in a raw you don’t get ‘fossil of rage’ than in your 101 chest your chance of getting ‘Unidentified fossil of RAGE’ doubles until you get 1, and when you do everything resets back to default figures.
But since we all know that Anet never bothers to read player complaint and even if they do they really don’t care enough to do anything about concerns raised by players they can at least introduce a simply exchange method e.g. 1x ‘Unidentified fossil of RAGE’ for 400x Geodes. For players with surplus ‘Unidentified fossil of RAGE’ they introduced exchange method of 3x ‘Sandy Bag of Gear’ for 1x ‘Unidentified fossil of RAGE’. I wonder what made them forget about players that didn’t get any? Stuff like this just baffles me as to what kind of mindsets are running gw2 show.
As it stands current loot system works for most players when it should be working for everyone.
226 chests, no fossil. My wife has opened about 75 chests and has 5. RNG ftl as usual
~Dr. Seuss
RNG is RNG, don’t get so upset about outliers getting x amount of fossils in x amount of chests.
I got a second one immediately after the update. I only wanted one. I feel like it’s a waste to spend it on Sandy Bags, at least not so few, so I’ll save Geodes for another Recipe.
Although, I wonder what could be in Sandy Bag to warrant only so few for a Fossil..
got my 2nd one too, after about 20-30 chests
I’ve gotten a total of about seven so far, and made four of the weapons.

No, you can exchange them for 3 bags of greens and blues. Yeah, awesome option – trade a rare item that other people want for some junk worth a few silver. Now, if only there were a way to get these items to the people who actually want them… You know, like an auction house or market where people can trade directly with other people. Boy, it sure would be great if GW2 had such a trading place…

I’ve opened maybe 20? And got 2 already… Maybe it’s because you care to much?
Opened less than 100 chests but 0 fossils so far. One of the reason I’m not too concerned is that games RNG hates me and I don’t actually think I would even find a fossil I would use.
I just did a Fractal with guildies and I was happy that they found exotics and ascended items galore. I got the one ascended ring and couple or rare weapons.
A net should really look into how their RNG really works, because it seems to favor some players more than others.

I always thought that was just a running joke.
Their RNG probably works in the same general manner as about any other RPG. Be thankful this isn’t Phantasy Star Online, depending on the name you created for your character, you would be assigned a color-coded ID that determined what equipment would drop for you. Want knuckle weapons? Dual swords? Too bad, here’re staves.
I agree that the droprate feels ridiculous at times. Have opened ~100 chests up to now.
But eventually got a fossil on my last pick (gotta save up geodes for pottery clay). I literary felt like dancing

I love it when people convince themselves that purposefully annoying and frustrating game mechanics are a good thing.
Not working in your favor does not make it a bad thing.

1. Thats funny. I think the only ‘good’ loot I’ve gotten out of them is the goggles/scarves (since those can be combined to make a selectable exotic). One or two cloth scraps is useless, I’ve got enough of the kitten ascended mats, and the 2-5ish geodes are useless. And the champ bag can be gotten from just killing a champ. How is any of that ‘good’?
Also the rush is because at some point, Dry Top will be abandoned (once LS goes away from it). I don’t foresee too many maps that’ll get past probably even tier 2.
2. RNG is fine, if the drop rates aren’t this low. At some point, people have enough of running the same content just for the hope of getting one of the low RNG items.
Its pretty much why I’ve taken a break from Teq, all the junk I get from him isn’t really offsetting the amount of time I have to sit there. The Teq hoard is the only thing I want from him, but after at least 4 months of doing him pretty much every day, and not getting even one, its made me really hate Anets RNG and I’ve stopped doing him. (same thing with the jetpack, though I kept at it multiple times a day till they removed the facility dungeon, and still have nothing to show for it.)
Please give us a keyring…

Many people may hate RNG, but I just take it in stride. I haven’t gotten a single Ascended weapon or equipment box and I do a lot of fractals and a lot of boss events where those things drop.
On the other hand I have gotten 6 fossils and have only opened 98 chests.
Do I wish I would have gotten and ascended box of some kind? Yes. Am I going to complain about it? No.
I guess it is OK, to vent your frustrations, and if that makes you feel better that is great. For me it wouldn’t help. I’ll get an ascended box when I get one. To many other things in life to stress and rage over.
Fossilized bugs have a lousy drop rate.
Eventually, persistence will most likely be fruitful.
“Most likely”, as in no guarantee.
Yes, I have a bug and my bow after 80+ tries.
I still won’t spend real money in the TP until ANet stops the luck-based skins.
i opened between 150 and 200 chests and no Unidentified fossil.
Nothing.

Someone could get a bug on try 1, or try 100, or never. It has nothing to do with skill, or personality, or wanting, or how much real money you spend in the TP, or how much you love your pets.
Pure luck is, in an odd way, perfectly balanced and fair. As is an asteroid that obliterates your house.
Nope, life ain’t fair. That catch-phrase is used by people to excuse their laziness and ignore the fact that people can be fair by choice. What we do is not random.
I don’t come on here and voice myself a lot, but playing 703 days of the game now, RNG for me is horrid. I like so much of this game, but not being able to get LUCKY in 2 years, for so many of the cool items ArenaNet has put into drops and chests. For me I would like to know why after all this time, I couldn’t have gotten a few of these items.
Its disappointing and I really can’t see what makes me saying so, So Unrealistic. The fact that so many can get 6-10 drops in a few days ( that’s what’s being said here) and I have to go on those telling the truth about their luck. Yet just as many or more will never see a drop and played just as much, nothing Special or Rare about that at all. Which is RNG, all about getting lucky.
I have to agree, its pretty hard to get one of these fossils, I’ve been tryin for a while, and well over 20 chests and still nothing. It’d be nice if they could have assured there would be a chance of it falling at least ONCE and then rng’d a second drop of it ….
I just hope, tht I get one before people move on and make getting geodes harder..
i have 4, and i didnt even want one…
I don’t think the rates are too low. From personal + info I’ve gathered from people I know, it seems to be somewhere in the 1/15-1/20 range for each. The problem occurs when people have horror stories of not getting one in 80+.
To solve that they should have just made them tradeable on the TP imo. That gives people who don’t really want anymore of them something better to do with them than turn them in for a few green bags, and helps people who are having problems getting one, or don’t want to go through the grind a way of obtaining it… and this would give a-net more $ from people buying them with rl $ → gems → gold.
Seems pretty win-win-win to me. Not sure why they didn’t take this direction.

I got 3 in 5 chests, i don’t want one either.
I wish I could sell you the one I have. I don’t like any of the skins :P
I’ve gotten NONE
I wouldnt mind buyin it off the TP from others if the option was available, but only cause Im havin 0 luck in gettin them, today more chest I opened. so well over the 20 and def. 30 -40 range and nothin still…
I found 3 yesterday After opening 12 chests, couldn’t believe my luck!
I wish I could sell the ones I’m getting. The ambrite weapons don’t really interest me.
And in regards to the “they’re account bound so they’re not a money maker” argument, I can’t really see that. Especially when we have things like the Foxfire, that’s almost the same. Rare drop that is used for limited things, and can be sold. But the fossilized insects are more of an investment than Foxfire, requiring lockpicks and limited access during a sandstorm — so I see even less rationale behind making the insects account bound.
I have gotten 2 fossils today without trying. I am satisfied.
Sadly I have no use for them because I cant be bothered to grind out 350+ geodes for each
260 chests, 2 insects and those came back to back in the same zone. Wife has opened under 100 chests and has 7 now. It’s definitely RNG hating people and I agree it would have been nice if they were sellable on the TP.
Will be hilarious if the final chest for the PS has one in it.
