As long as they keep the updates flowing and don’t sacrifice forward movement for permanence.

OPEN world CONTENT is going to take a HUGE hit. Expect LESS things like the MARIONETTE encounter, and more like the personal storyline-like instanced content that NO ONE even REMEMBERS.

Not to mention how, IRONICALLY, they’re killing the concept of a LIVING world. If the changes to the OPEN world won’t disappear, what’s the POINT in having a STORYLINE? Imagine how it would be if players defeated SCARLET but her ARMIES never stopped INVADING a given map? Or if she NEVER stopped appearing in the MARIONETTE content even after we had DEFEATED her?

ArenaNet DOESN’T know how to AVOID extremes. Having the ENTIRE season 1 based around TEMPORARY content was Bad. Having the ENTIRE season 2 based around PERMANENT content is BAD, too.

Guys, guys, this dude is using caps in some words!! He must know about this!! We must agree with him!!!

PD: I still don’t kwow what’s that Marionette thing that people talks about? Do you eat it?

Mationette was a big kitten open world fight that required 5 teams to coordinate, and to understand the individual boss fight mechanics. It was fun kitten! I would have absolutely loved to see that stay as a world boss, but sadly, it didn’t.

Youtube a few videos of it.

Marionette continued for 2 weeks after EOTM was released. The day EOTM was released was the last day marionette was done successfully on a regular basis (it had a 2 hour spawn rate). Before it was released it was done regularly on Aurora Glade from 13:00 to late in the evening.
What I am getting at is that if it was permanent it probably would be done like teq and the wurm before megaserver, after megaserver it would be fine.

I’m correcting you. You didn’t already pay for upcoming content.

To be fair all this LS stuff is developed post-launch so you’re not exactly entitled to any of it on account of buying the game. The dungeons, PS and open world at launch is what you’re entitled to. Even if the LS updates happen to contain those things you’re not entitled to them.

Best think of LS as DLC (just to be clear-I loathe DLC and thought it would do more harm than good for nearly 10 years now, but I digress) that you can play for free if you happen to log in during the launch week but you have to pay for later if you missed the launch period.

It’s an….interesting tactic. Log now or pay later…sneaky way of making people more inclined to at least log in-and once you’re logged in you might play a few mins. It’s not as good as an expansion (no leading by the nose you see)…but since they’re hell bent on this LS then this is an OK compromise I think.

I’m correcting you. By purchasing this companies product, like many others have, I have invested in the FUTURE DEVELOPMENT of said product. I already gave them my money, so until they give me something that I have not invested in, why should I give them more?

Unless you bought shares, no, your initial purchase only payed for what was already there.

Even if one didn’t pay for future content it doesn’t take away your right to be outraged at the over monetization of this game. There is really little other than the same old tired universal arguments that can prove that one bad profitable decision after another hasn’t ruined this game.

If I want to go back and play parts of the living story that I wasn’t around to see, I have to give you more money or farm in game and convert my hard work into gems for next to no content in return?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t I already purchase your game? At what point does it become ok to charge your customers more for something they’ve already purchased? Why even gate the content like this? Does this mean I’ll have to pay for micro-updates of the living story in the near future?

World of warcraft is releasing and expansion, do I have to pay for it? Correct me if im wrong but didnt already purchase the game.

This is your comment. Just because it comes in small bits instead of all at once doesnt make it any less an expansion. Just log in 5 seconds. Even if you dont have time to play how much trouble is pressing a red 2 on your desktop and shut it down again

While I would love it if every release would be so interesting I would be willing to do it endlessly that just won’t happen. Doesn’t matter that I really enjoy this game there have been releases that I just did not play because they did not appeal to me. If someone joins in a year there is going to be tons of write-ups about which releases are better than others, which are must haves and which you can completely skip over and not pay a dime. The total cost would not be 200 x all releases it would be 200 x the most popular releases for the most part.

lol, @ reading =/= playing content.

Yes, “lol”, ‘cause every GW2 player who didn’t play GW1 should not read about the lore and story of the first game if it is of interest to them – no they should pay for it and go play it.

LOL, indeed.

My comment isn’t directed at those invested in the lore. Some people play for achievements, for the cosmetic gear involved or (god-forbid) to actually SEE the stuff play out rather than just read up what happened. They won’t be satisfied with simply reading plot.

It’s like saying anyone interested in cinematography, editing, or acting will be completely satisfied simply reading the synopsis of a movie or TV show if they aren’t able to get their hands on it.

Your assumption is that just reading the lore will fulfil all types of players.

It was successful, it just went from being successful for about 12 hours per day to being successful once per day. With the schedule introduced now it would make no difference but back then it made a very big difference.

Yeah, when I said it was successful through the last day, I meant consistently. Even on overflows. Maybe not every single time, but certainly more than once or twice a day. Well over half the time, I’d say.

And no you will not have to pay for the micro-updates. You get the open world content regardless if you unlocked the episode or not. You can also join a friend who has unlocked it. You just will not get any of the rewards or progress in your story from it.

You bought the game but are you still paying to use their servers which host the game? Gw2 does not charge a monthly fee to keep servers/development up and running so they need other ways to get the cash flow required and there is no gun pointed to your head, you are free to play and never spend an extra dime if you so desire. Other MMOs once you stop paying your initial purchase of the box game is useless.

That thing you “already purchased” was the base game. Anet are continuing to add new things on top of it, and it’s their right to charge for new things.

Think of it this way. If you bought the first season of Breaking Bad on dvd, should you be entitled to the second season, or the third for free? Lets say you bought a ticket to see the first Iron Man movie. Do you get to see the second and third movie for free? Say you went to a concert. Do you get to attend every other concert for free until the end of time?

Do people not get that you only have to login every two weeks to get this content for free, forever? It’s awesome! Any other company would charge for it, period. Also, I don’t think the open world content will take a hit. People are presupposing that they will not add world events with this new content. Of course they will. It’s one of the staples of the game.

Or you know… take 5 seconds to log in during the time the ls is active and unlock it permanently…

What if I’m a deployed soldier and logging in is not an option. I’ll have to come back and pay for everything I missed?

Then you should have money to spend since your earnings are tax free plus you should be getting combat/hazard pay, no? My brother is deployed and he and his squadron do very well from the pay. They have no cost of living obviously, make a bunch of money and don’t pay taxes on it. He just bought a motorcycle with the money he made over there, which would be like 10000 Living Story updates…

200 gems = ~$2.50.

Most people don’t realize the money they waste. I bet you spend more than $2.50/week on coffee or soda (or heaven forbid bottled water….), things that bring you joy for approximately 2min.

Skip one meal eating out at a restaurant and that will cover an entire season of LS. No joke.

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

No. Nobody wants all temporary content, and it’s bad for the game. This news is awesome.

Speak for yourself, sir. While I agree that this news is overall good, I’ve always loved the temporary model. I was initially really unhappy about this. I’m warming to the idea now, though. As long as they keep the updates flowing and don’t sacrifice forward movement for permanence.

I too have to agree with this, as much as I am glad that they are trying to do something to appease certain groups ( I mean Life does come over any game in importance any time, with that being said there are many valid reason why a person might not be able to log in). Anyways I feel that this is a bad idea and is ruining what the game was really advertised to be, and that is a living world. Temporay content is what is needed to make that real. What happens in real life when you miss out on something? Thats just it, nothing happens, you are crap out of luck, ife is not permanent it is temp. Best to just learn how to build the best bridge you can and get over it so you can move on. Its a life lesson I see some on here greatly needing to learn. Hey, if you dont like it, you can always down grade to the last generation of games, cause frankly this is the future and is exactly what it should be.

Not completely. Per their twitch stream, there will be permanent events and such added to the world that will remain. Which, everyone will have access to. Yes there will be some things that go away after the two weeks (they cited things like the signs from the initial karka release), but these should be minor. Future large scale events like marionette and battle for LA type things would remain in the game.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

Right, but they also said in that stream that there would also be things in the open world that come and go, so as to make sense for the particular story being told (such as LA being rebuilt).

I suppose that it is inevitable, given the duality of gaming communities, that people will complain that we are getting exactly what we have been asking for over the last 2 years.

>Get temp content from Anet.
>Complain ad nauseum and beg for perm content.
>Complain that Anet doesn’t listen.
>Throw temper tantrums.
>Anet announces plans to do perm content.
>Complain that the temp content is being set aside.
>Complain about perm content.
>Complain that Anet doesn’t listen.
>Throw more temper tantrums.

I see a pattern here. I see the community throwing fits and crying that Anet never listens, and then I see Anet delivering exactly the things we ask for. Followed by more community outcry that Anet never listens and that they are driving the game into the ground.

Well, to be fair, I’m sure not all the things they put in can necessarily stay and be in context. So I can understand them having to take some things out. One of the things they cited were like the warning signs that were on the beaches and such in Southsun, that went away afterwards. Those were relatively minor. I’m sure there will be some larger things to, but they did say we would see events like marionette and they would remain. Which, yes, was a huge thing people asked for.

I don’t mind some of it going away, and as I’ve been saying (for over a year now) they just need to find a decent balance between what stays and what doesn’t. It got better as season 1 went on, but it wasn’t perfect. This might be closer, but we’ll see.

Yes, there’s a pattern there. People complain about everything. Even when Anet does listen and people can’t really argue that they didn’t ask for whatever it is we got, they simply ignore it and continue to complain that Anet doesn’t listen.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.
