In my story (Norn-warrior) i meet ugly, evil dredge. He created a terrible weapon and killed humans, not sparing his own people . All ok, of course for ugly dredge, but his name Vyacheslav! It’s an old russian name. It is not suitable for blind rats, with two teeth in the mouth. I think this is an insult to the russian people.

I believe you missed the whole point of the dredge.

The dredge are a reference to the Soviet era.

This is what I wrote. Developers associated blind rats, ex-slaves and very sneaky with the Russian people. USSR nobody won, and Zhukov was a liberator, not the aggressor.

The ability to laugh at oneself. “You” get a big part, not just some side-joke, no! A really big gig, dangerous – UNBLINDEABLE.
Organized, everywhere, spying on us – even got into the living story! Wasn’t the grawl, or the jotun, no! Once opressed by the evil dwarves you now seek revenge. Not just by, you know, sneaking up one by one in houses. No, you are building the mega-cannon.

What did the french get? Or the spanish? Any good german villains in this game?

Don’t be insulted, it shows they care.

No, they are messing with the mind set of the Soviet Union (and funnily enough, you seem to ignore the fact that far more than Russia was part of said Union)

Because they are like we are.

"Vyacheslav! It’s an old russian name"
This is not "old russian" - this is a common slavian (especially east-slavian) name. It’s means "more glorious" (Old Russian lang)

I enjoy that dredge are portrayed like that, but I can understand how it could be REALLY offensive to someone from Russia.

Most germans I know don’t take offence from the kitten portrayal in games. I guess it’s because they’re level-headed, not whiny and insecure.

One could find many insults in this game if one really wanted to look for them. What one culture finds funny another might find offensive so it is a fine line between humor and offense. I think more than one culture could see themselves in various characters and races in this game so it is unfair to say this points at Russian, Martian or Jovian etc…heck, the dredge are very borg-like as are the skritt with a seemingly common memory. The story is not yet over either for any of the races so it may be interesting to see how everyone evolves in relation to the other races in the storyline. There are so many funny lines from all the characters, I find it hard to take offense whatever I am seeing. I chuckle at the incredible depth of perception ANet has of our and this world in general. If we cannot laugh at ourselves who can we laugh at?

Imo it’s not making fun of Russians. It’s making fun of the Soviet political system, which is a big difference. The references to the moletariate is the big clue here.

Hey, just be thankful you aren’t from a western society who uses ‘Logan’ a lot, possibly the most dull and predictable character in the game.

At least your guy is doing something interesting.

The Dredge may be ugly, but they’re also ridiculously cool and far more fun to explore and antagonize than most MMO enemies. And their Soviet styling is a huge part of the reason for that.

The bottom line is that the Dredge are based on Soviets, not Russians. Also keep in mind that most of them aren’t evil, they’re just being used by their power-hungry leaders (another Soviet reference).

Dredge are very cool in their own way. I would like to see a faction that is cooperative and see what it is like to work with them. Every one of the races in this game have a cool vibe going in one way or another. Skritt on the surface are annoying but they do grow on you after a while. Lot of material here for hopefully other races we will be able to play.
