Hi

Returning to the game after being away for 18 months after a friend starting playing but he choose a different server to all my old characters were on. Is there any free way to start a new char on his server or move mine?

Couldn’t find an existing up to date post on this.

If he deletes all his characters he can change servers for free.

The only “free” way to move home server is to delete all of your current characters and re-start the client. Upon logging in, you will be given the option of selecting a new “home server” (although be warned, currently the server population listings have been changed and a few servers are currently “full” and can’t be joined).

Otherwise, it could be considered free to use gems to transfer characters, that is, if you convert gold that you collected in game into gems and use those gems to transfer. Of course, that would take a great deal of time to collect the gold, but you wouldn’t have to spend any real world money.

Although, with the megaserver system in place, you should be free to play with your friend in every form of content except WvW, which is the only game mode that changes depending on what server you are on.

Are you in the same region (NA, EU, or China) as your friend? Do you mainly/only want to play WvW together?

If you answered yes to the first question and no to the second then neither of you needs to change servers. All servers in a region share PvE and PvP maps, so you just need to form a party, go to the same location and if necessary right click on their picture in the party menu and pick ‘join in map’ to play together.

WvW is still separated by server however so if you want to do that you do need to be on the same server.

However, before anyone starts deleting characters or buying gems to transfer please check whether the server you want to move to is full. They recently changed it so server populations are based entirely on the number of people actively playing WvW. Which means, in the long run, it will allow people to be more evenly spread between servers but it also means populations don’t change quickly and aren’t based on the number of people currently online so refreshing the list, logging out and back in, waiting until off-peak times and other tricks that work in other games to get you into a full server won’t work here. If it’s full it’s full all the time and you need to find another server.
