I want to transfer to Tarnished Coast to play with some friends, but I don’t want to pay 1800 gems i’d be able to pay 1000 gems sometime soon. Do the server populations ever fluctuate or are they pretty static?

They’re pretty static.

I expect neither an exodus from TC nor a sudden huge player increase on other servers anytime soon. I think the only way that could happen would be if ANet merged some of the lower population servers together, unfortunately.

You can guest to Tarnished Coast and play with your friends that way. You just wont be alble to WVW or PVP with them.

The population always fluctuates with servers, they are never static. People come back when new content is added, then leave again when they get bored and wait for new content to be released.

As for the gems to transfer, i highly doubt Anet will change the amount. It has been 1800 gems since they eneded the free server changes a while back. The gem cost has not changed and i dont see it changing in the near future.

Only thing is, and i might be wrong about this. I read somewhere that you can transfer to medium pop servers for free, but changing to high pop servers will cost you 1800 gems. Not sure if that is still in effect.

They seem pretty static at this point. T’oast tends to only fluctuate between “full” and “very high”. It’s a very popular server (and the best one IMO, but I may be a bit biased there). In the meantime, you can always just guest over and still do everything PvE related. The only thing you won’t be able to do is WvsW for T’oast.

No, switching to a medium pop server costs 500 gems, high population 1000 and very high population 1800.

There were short spans when you could move down to less populated servers for free, but only ever for a few days at a time.

By the way, there is one exception: you can transfer for free to any server that isn’t full, if you delete all your characters first.

As for static/dynamic: TC has been very high in population pretty much from the start, and it is unlikely to change.
