Duo Tank/DPS help me choose.
This game’s combat system doesn’t have Tanks/Support/Healers/DPS/Tanks roles of any kind. By choosing a role, you are gimping yourself and your potentials of combat.
I highly recommend you both to check out this Video to learn how the Combat System and mechanics function within GW2:
Next, I recomend you to watch this Video to get an idea of how each Profession plays in Combat. You may also use this as a (Guide) to choosing which Combat styles you might be into trying out when selecting a Profession to meet your needs:
Also when you are done watching those videos above, I recommend you to read this Written (Guide) below to get a better details on how Combat works as well as choosing Armor/Traits/Weapons:

Also please do Comment on my written (Guide) to keep it bumped up for more new players to check out!
Good luck and have fun in GW2! =)
Hey DreamyAbaddon,
Thanks for the links they are very informative but is also something that I already knew =]
I do realize that this game doesn’t have the classical roles, but it is also true that there are certain builds that focus more on one aspect than the other.
So my question is what 2 classes with the build types we want would work well together?
Guardian would definitely fit the Tank/Support type playstyle you’re wife is going for. They’re meant to be frontline, in your face type fighters that have a lot of options for giving boons. Just gotta be careful you aren’t just plain taking hits, but I’m sure you both know that by now.
With that said, if I were to make a new character knowing I was going to run around with a Guardian, I’d probably pick an Elementalist or a Mesmer. Simply because the way I play would involve using combo fields to support both of us rather than concentrating on high damage numbers. But if you prefer damage, then Thief or Elementalist would probably be a bit more satisfying for you (early on at least).
But as most will tell you, pretty much all the professions can fit a specific role if you have the skill and build yourself correctly.
Hope you two have fun, whatever you end up choosing!
Gemini Man (Mesmer) / Knight Man (Guardian)
See, That’s the problem… If you read the written guide you would know the answer regarding that!
I DONT recommend copy & paste someone elses build online since it’s really bad anyways. To many people judge a profession based on online builds and that’s an issue when it comes to learning your profession and playing the way you want. Since really, you are only playing the way other players want instead which is wrong.
Follow these Steps:
1. First, choose weapons that works for your playstyle on the profession you like.
2. Next, Choose Traits to build your characters playstyle. Do NOT choose Traits for stat-bonuses…
3. Choose Armor/upgrades for Stats you need to balance out your playstyle so you can do well in both damage/survivability.
4. Test run it at (Heart of the Mists) and kill Svanir to see if that’s what you want. If so, you can work on getting that build and style of playing by lvling up during PvE, if not, keep experimenting to see what you like since (Heart of the Mists) is Free.
Watch my 2nd Video on “Combat Demos”. That’s “Svanir” I’m fighting located in
(Heart of the Mists). You can test out your builds on him and see how effective they are and how well you can fight. It helps to know what your style is during the test runs.
Thank you AzureDragon for the advice, in the end we decided (and you confirmed it) that Guardian/Ele would be a good combo.
Thank you DreamyAbaddon because you gave me a neat workflow on how to build and test my future character.
Have fun on GW2!

SO basically if I like playing healers in normal MMOs, GW2 isn’t for me?
Certainly seems that way if my experience doing the zone boss in Harathi HInterlands last night is anything to go by, my Elementalist running around in Water Attunement got kitten to bronze rewards because she spent her time healing/reviving/debuffing rather than selfishly pew-pewing and letting others die; for which she’s have gold gold without a doubt.

A bit off topic, but I’ll go ahead and reply…
It doesn’t exactly mean that the game isn’t for you. It just means that you need to take a slightly different approach to combat. While you may be able to spec yourself into a focus on Water Attunement, it doesn’t mean you don’t have access to any of the other 3 elements.
I do understand where you’re coming from though. When I first started leveling my Mesmer I focused mostly on the staff and conditions since it helped keep me and fellow players alive. But unfortunately against bigger bosses I would be stuck with bronze or silver medals, despite being there and fighting hard from the start. Once I got a bit more comfortable with the game though I started swapping between staff and sword/pistol on the fly and have been getting Golds ever since!
Short version: Don’t neglect any of the tools at your disposal, even if your traits focus on something in particular!
-On topic-
Enjoy the Guard/Ele combo MisterG! Look me up if you happen to be on Sorrow’s Furnace and would like a 3rd wheel Mesmer! XD

You cannot be a pure healer in GW2. Even if you traited all the way into healing, it would not be enough to save an idiot player who tries to facetank a dangerous enemy and doesn’t move/dodge/block/make any attempt to avoid damage themself.
GW2 is very heavy on personal responsibility in combat. All players are responsible for avoiding/reducing damage- that’s why every class has a heal skill and the ability to move/dodge while fighting. Instead of a DPS/Tank/Healer trinity, GW2 is built around damage/control/support, which is a broader form of the traditional trinity; i.e. tanking is a type of control, and healing is a type of support. Instead of focusing aggro on one person, you make it harder for an enemy to damage anyone- instead of healing damage, you make it so others don’t take damage, or the amount they take is lessened enough for them to heal it themselves.
What other types of control and support are there?
-An elementalist can control the enemy by using skills such as Frozen Ground and Unsteady Ground to slow down an enemy chasing another player, thus preventing damage- if an enemy is chasing someone, they can’t attack. With blinding skills like Blinding Flash, you can make the enemy’s next attack completely miss. You can also use Gust to a) knock the enemy away from a wounded player and b) interrupt a dangerous attack, which also helps keep that person alive. I have used the dagger’s AoE knockout many times in WvW to knock away enemies trying to finish a downed ally. While they tried to recover, I rezzed that person all the way back up. It’s not healing, but it saves lives regardless.
-On the topic of support- support can come in offensive and defensive variants. I support offensively by stacking might boons on my party, allowing them to do more damage. I also put down fire fields they can use in their combos. Defensively, I can apply the protection boon on others, which reduces the damage they take by a third- a sizable amount in dungeons, where an enemy can rip away over half your health in a blink. I also strip conditions from my allies and, with aurasharing, can apply my auras (which reduce damage and disable enemies who attack) to everyone. I also can block projectile attacks with Swirling Winds, giving anyone in the area six seconds of breathing room for attack or recovery. Other classes can support in other ways- a guardian can grant Aegis, which blocks the next attack, and shield allies, for example.
As Dreamy wrote in his guide, and as my example shows, damage, control, and support are not roles. Each class can contribute in each factor, though some classes are more bent towards a certain field. For example, a guardian is primarily support and secondarily damage and control. A thief is primarily damage and less so (though still capable of) support and control. As such, in order to be most effective, it is best to utilize all three aspects when you play. Believe me when I say that keeping an enemy from hitting someone will do a lot more good than trying to heal the damage.
Finally, do not equate downed with dead. Downed is not meant to guarantee death, especially in group situations, nor is it something that is rare. If a player goes down, anyone can try to rez or rally them, though at high risk to themselves- overall, it is better to not go down in the first place, which will be the case with good players, who will avoid damage instead of depending on another person to take care of them. It is not selfish if another player dies because they stand still and think they’re pure DPS- it’s part of the learning process for them.
Hard to get used to, but you’ll find that juggling support/damage/control is helluva lot of fun once you get the hang of it. I also recommend that if you like supporting other players, you try a guardian. If you stay as an elementalist, I will warn you as a fellow ele that staying in water attunement and focusing on healing alone will kitten you- it is far more effective, as I said, to use controls and damage-mitigating support to prevent the enemy from hurting other players in the first place.
