I have noticed that even though my mesmer uses a focus much of the time I still have only 42 credited kills with a focus. I have targeted enemies and called up the phantasmal warden from a distance so that the only damage done is coming from the focus based phantasm. Still the number doesn’t change.
What am I doing wrong?

The phantasm probably counts as it’s own entity. So it would not count as you landing the final hit.

Aha, that could be it. If so, a different profession using focus would be required as the other skill does no damage. Thank you for your reply.

Guardian is relatively easy to do it with. Go to Idea Incubation Lab. there are 6 Sparkflys that respawn every 20-25 seconds. It’ll take you about 6 hours to do it if you kill them as soon as they spawn.

If you are going for ambient creatures there are plenty of them in Godlost Swamp in Queensdale.

Thank you both. I do tend to do any daily ambient killing in swamps (when the daily has an ambient creatures killed category), it does go fast there so I’ll consider that good advice.

That I still get xp but no credit for the focus weapon master when using only the phantasmal warden leads me to wonder if this is perhaps a bug/oversight?

Mesmer can kill with the focus in three ways:

1. Phantasm (#5)
2. Focus pull off cliff (#4-2)
3. Reflect trait (Insp VIII)

I know that 1. is not credited. None of phantasms kills are credited to your weapon; that’s the reason I have sword full (used from 80+) but not full GS (used from 15+).

Afaik elementalist is a good class to get focus kills.

Guardian is also a good class.

Roight… After you’ve done your Focus Weapon Master go on to do Shield.

Shield takes about 6-7 hours straight of spamming Shield 4 on mobs (5 mobs per 30 seconds).

However, you can use the elementalist shield to speed up the process, iirc.

Killing ambient creatures doesn’t count for daily kills, daily maguuma slayer etc., but funny enough, it does count towards weapon mastery. It’s nifty, too, because any blow is automatically the killing blow, so that would be the easiest way to test whether your focus warden counts or not.

(And ambient slayer, and shell slayer.)

And daily kill variety, although all ambients are counted as one type.

It might just be plain bugged. I run an Engie main and have since launch. He uses a harpoon gun underwater. His only option. I do a LOT of farming underwater, yet my harpoon kills only register something like ‘20’. This is obviously bugged.

Are you looking at harpoon/spear (same thing) or harpoon gun/speargun (also same thing)? The wording in the weapon mastery achievements mislead me before, too. (I main an engi)

I might need to double check on that later Pixelpumpkin. I didn’t notice two categories when I looked last, but I suspect you are correct.

Yeah, in the weapon mastery achievement panel, they’re called “Speargun”, “Trident” and “Harpoon” – I have mistaken “Harpoon” to mean harpoon gun before.

That is definately weird and probably should be fixed…

The spear is called ‘harpoon’ while the harpoon gun is called ‘Speargun’??

Now you are free to kill giants all day long.

Ambients used to count towards any and all daily kills, but then they added Daily Ambient Slayer and got rid of that.

Well I haven’t checked killing every ambient creature type there is when the Daily Kill Variety achievement is on, but at least most of them seem to fall under one type.

Yeah, they should, I’m just asking because crabs count towards “Shell Slayer”, not “Ambient Slayer” for some reason, so they might be treated differently here, too. I will try it out next time I see Daily Kill Variety on the list.
