Thinking about purchasing it on STEAM. I was wondering if you can role this content solo as an RPG or does it still retain the MMo aspect where you need others to defeat xyz champion.

I believe you can hire mercs to fill out a party if need be. You could always peruse the Guild Wars wiki.

In GW you can hire henchemen to fill up your party and when you get the Nightfall campaign you can find heroes to fill up your party. But even in a party with heroes i find content that just is too hard to complete and i’m not even talking about hard mode.

I would say that you can do most of it solo. But the game world mechanics are different than what we have today with most MMOs ‘free-range’ model. GW1 was ‘gated’, meaning that you had to complete a mission instance to be able to ‘unlock’ the map beyond the mission. Some of those needed active players to complete, not just fodder like the henchmen in Prophecies and Factions, the first two in the series. Nightfall gives you heroes which are more customizeable and you have some control over what they do in combat. But there were still missions you in which you needed real players to coordinate the steps. I loved the first game. Lots of fun. You can see the ghost of some of the mechanics adopted for GW2 in GW1.

There are often people in the major cities of GW1 Asking in chat for help on mission may get you some assistance. I basically only log in to update my hall of monuments and play with my guild message.

With the heroes you get from nightfall and eotn, you can do all of the story content by yourself. The elite areas are doable with heroes but they are not easy.

I’ve completed every mission in GW1 in normal mode with just heroes and henchmen. It’s not as easy as having other players (and setting up a full party of heroes will take time and gold) but it can be done.

There’s some I’ve never managed to finish in hard mode without other people, but you don’t need to complete them in hard mode for anything other than a few titles.

Having said that if your concern is that you’ll have to do it solo because no one plays it any more you don’t need to worry. Play on the American districts (you can switch freely between them any time you’re in a town or outpost) and there will be lots of people about, especially if the mission you’re working on is related to the Zaishen Bounty (daily quests).

Every mission also has a Bonus objective. Only for a very few missions i needed other players to get the Bonus objective. But “solo” with Heroes and Henchmen i have completed every mission in Normal mode. (hmm, except the one where u can not use H/H)
Odly and ironically i did pretty evrything with H/H (Heroes/Henchmen), not with other players thus.

One thing about Heroes, when u get them they r worse then Henchmen.
They need to be properly upgraded; better skills, weapons and weapon and armor upgrades. Then they r (or should be) better then Henchmen.

Timezone difference is a kitten, but if anyone needs some help with GW1, PM me.
Wouldnt mind playing some GW1 again.

A mission where you can’t use heroes and henchmen? If you mean Augury Rock I wouldn’t say that’s relevant here because you can’t take other people either, it’s a solo mission.

It’s easy enough to solo the original GW. They let you recruit npc party members if you don’t want to party with actual players. This gets hard in later game though cause the AI leaves much to be desired and can’t really compare to real human ability to predict and play the game.

But it is soloable, and definitely has a great story. I would highly recommend buying it. If nothing else you’ll be informed and able to get references this game makes to the past.

GW1 was easy with heroes and henchmen, now that you can run a party of 7 heroes and your own self, it’s just silly. Find the right builds/team composition for each task at hand and you will have no problem going through it on your own. And while it is nicer to do it with other people, remember that they can always suck/have bad builds/have no clue how to use them… Heroes, on the other hand, you can control yourself to some extent, even use their skills in their place if it’s really needed.

By the way if you’re just starting out and planning to use heroes a lot it’s a good idea to play through the tutorial parts of Factions (until you’re sent to the Ministers estate for the first mission) on each profession because that will unlock a lot of skills and give you more flexibility in your builds.

Also try to unlock each hero as soon as possible, even if you’ve already got one of their profession, because when you unlock them you also get any skills they start with, which is another quick way to give yourself more options.

I did all normal and hard mode missions in gw1 with just my heroes. I also vanquished and did cartography with them. Granted it’s easier with people but they are not a requirement as long as you have good builds on your heroes.

same, the only content in the entire game that I couldn’t solo with heroes were the ‘elite’ dungeons that have a party size of 12.

Actually you can solo with heroes if you are really good.
The Luxon one you can flag heroes and summon spirits to press the buttons on the floor to open the gate.
In the Kurzick dungeon where you needed a shadowstep/teleport skill was changed so now you can walk up to there.

GW1 you can solo 100% of the game, some dungeons / elite areas can be really hard but soloable for sure.
In my opinion, heroes was a bit better than an average player.
