Guys, I have a problem.
Your thoughts on each class lines up with mine pretty well, so I’ll suggest an elementalist. They start off kinda slow because you have so much crap to unlock, but once you hit level 15 or so they really get fun. Pick up Arcane Shield and Armor of Earth as soon as you can so you can double-dagger without imploding, because it’s an absolute blast.
For PvE, flamethrower can work reasonably well. Also, due to fundamental design flaws, turrets are actually quite good in Orr, though this really isn’t a good thing if you look at the problems with that zone in context.
For Pvp, not using grenade kit will limit you a bit. We have, really, the best ranged AoE options available to any class. Also, not using bomb kit will limit your control, and remove a very decent source of pbAoE.
However, you do have options. Elixer gun works wonders for 1v1 due to being able to keep weakness up permanently on a target. This reduces overall damage from warrior, ranger, thief, guardian, and engineer (most builds) by around 25%, which is huge.
You also have persistent condition removal for yourself and allies due to the light field from Super Elixir. Any projectile finisher from you or your allies that goes through the light field (doesn’t have to hit a target) will remove 1 condition. Skills from engineer that trigger projectile finisher include Elixir Gun 1, Rifle 1, and Pistol 1.
Elixir gun also has an excellent mobility skill (acid bomb), a superb cripple which gives AoE swiftness to nearby allies (Elixir F), and a cone poison attack that removes conditions from allies.
For more info on Elixir gun builds, you can look through the build sticky at the top of these forums. That thread has some decent info + instructional videos.
There are also non-kit builds that are easier but (arguably) less effective than multi-kit builds. They do have good damage though. For those, look into Rifle+Toolbelt, or the P/P burning build.
All of the above being said, if you actively dislike 2 of our best kits, maybe this class isn’t for you. I personally run Grenade kit-Elixir gun-Elixir S with rifle at the moment, and I couldn’t be happier about the class.
The only problem with not using explosive kits is lacking aoe skills. Other than that, you can throw out some nice DPS without those kits. I made a rifle build with Power-Precision-Toughness gear and an emphasis on gadget, and I was able to burst down enemies in PvE and WvW very quickly. With the engineer, I find it quite easy to throw together a good build no matter what your criteria may be.
Sorrow’s Furnace
Thanks for replies so far! I have been running Elixir U, Elixir C (I think) and Elixir gun. I also use flamethrower, but to a lesser extent. I really like condition builds, hence my love for necro. I have tried elementalist in the mists but It felt a little to prepackaged for my tastes. I’m basically down to a necro or an engineer. I feel like I would like necro a little bit more closer to end game but I, as with many others, have yet to see what bug fixes will be made to necro and which ones won’t. Because, on paper, they are my Ideal class, Its just do I want to spend 100 hours+ getting to level cap/playing while it still has a ways to go before becoming balanced with other classes. I also really want to level in dungeons and play a support build.
Im considering an elementalist. Any last words to seal the deal?
Play whichever class you find mokittenn. That’s what gw2 is about.
Edit: Seriously, it censors “most” “fun”? WTF?

Last two letters in “most” + first two letters in “fun” with no space maybe? That might explain it.
Being biased in favor of engineer I can say that mine is still tons of fun — though in defense of the necromancer: my guild leader is level 80 and plays one and he just rips through stuff. From what he’s said they really begin to shine later in the game. He’s incredibly tanky and pumps out the dps like a madman. I know you said you didn’t want to hear it, but it truly does come down to what class you feel most comfortable in. I found engineer to be a perfect fit — I never felt like I had to force myself to get used to be mechanic. And that’s true for others with a different profession. Good luck.
TY for advice guys, Back on original engi because, when it boils down to it, no matter what I play the grass will always be greener and I already ahve a level 30 toon so why waste time releveling.
lol, most fun saw ‘s t f u’ i bet and kittened that out.
edit: lauren caught that already.
i’d say if engy’s working for you, run with it. i don’t think any other class is really anything like engy.
