Norn Warrior
Blackgate
I’m new to this game and would like to know what some of current level 80s did to gear up for WvW or PvE once they hit 80. Also, please mention the length of time that it took you to do it. Any advice or tips would also be appreciated
"Just because Player (A) & Player (B) are both playing Warrior Professions, DOES NOT MEAN they are Both Interested in the same Armor/stats type.
Because everyone will have different Traits selected, Everyone will have their own stats they need and are missing."
Since you are new the game, I highly recommend you check out this (Guide) on GW2’s combat system 101 which will also explain how Armor/Traits selection work:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/GW2-Combat-system-101-Guide/first
This game’s combat system is extremely different than your Traditional MMORPG.
That guide will exlain how the Combat Mechanics are, then explain what Armor/Traits you need as well as selecting weapons
I wrote it for new players and I’m happy to say it also has a short video attached to it to show you how all 8 professions look in combat.
Well I basically only enjoy WvW. Therefore, I only started to PvE while gold farming in Orr to get better weapons and such. So when I hit level 80 after 120 hours of play time, I was able to buy 4/6 pieces of a full exotic karma armor set. I then started gold farming for good runes, sigils, and weapons. I haven’t finished yet, but I am close to making my character exactly how I planned him.
I mostly WvW but went and leveled jewler and tailoring to customize my stats better. This way I can avoid dungeons all together.
thanks for your responses so far.
@ Aether: the gold farming in Orr is because the end game gear is mainly brought from TP is that correct?
I leveled armorsmithing and weaponsmithing and used the mats I collected clearing high level zones (I did have to buy some but not much) to craft my gear. It was far far cheaper for me than buying off the tp. I had another char with jewelcrafting so I could make my trinkets while I worked on ascended gear.
thanks for your responses so far.

Not really. Dungeons, Orr Temple Armor, crafting or just buying them on the TP are where people get end game armor.
For my thief I ran a dungeon to get my armor. For my guardian I just bought some temple armor first but have some dungeon armor as well.

Like I said, I bought my endgame gear through Karma at a temple at Orr. I farm for gold to buy runes and jewels which would fully complete my character.
I wound up farming and selling on the ah then purchased exotic armor and weapons. Also wound up making a crafter to help with making what I couldnt find or didnt want to purchase.
@OP
First, I highly recommend reading this guide: http://dulfy.net/2012/10/03/gw2-endgame-gearing-guide/
This will explain how and where to get what you want.
As for me, my first 80 (ranger) had saved 15g while leveling, so I bought a full set of exotics and 2 exotic weapons off the TP. I took my time, around 230hrs plating to hit 80.
My second 80 (guardian) took much less time, around 80hrs, and had 4 crafts at 400 by this time, so crafted everything I needed.
I am horridly impatient.
Thief: struggled with Yellow/Green gear till I worked out how the type system worked. I had about 10G so spent £ on gems to buy Exotics. Of the wrong type, really but they do fine.
Warrior: had all Rare lvl 70-80, spent £ on gems to buy Exotic Knight’s Draconic with Runes Of Undead.
Ranger: same. Spent £ on gems to get Exotic Knights Draconic.
Elementalist: now I have learnt to farm dragons, I should be able to afford good armour with in game money.
The guides on which armour improve which stats are fantastic, I read them over and over when making a build. Generally though, I slam toughness onto everything I can, I hate being downed.
I crafted all my exotics armor and trinkets. I buy exotic weapon off TP and dungeon vendors.
For PvE, I saved all karma during leveling and just upgraded my gear in the TP every ten levels (five for mesmer). Including the collected daily karma, I had about 240000 karma when I dinged 80, which I spent on Orr exotics. Maybe because I hadn’t started crafting yet, I dinged 80 with more than 15 gold too, which I spent on exotic weapons and buffs. Now I’m working on getting my chars (three 80’s) some tier 3 cultural weapons, which takes me about ten days of casual play (one to two hour per day) to collect the karma, including dailies, per weapon.

Took two months to level to 80. Went slowly and got equipment by area. Mainly from karma merchants and when I hit 60 started buying rares to equip. Finally bought exotic armor with karma and used my gold for weapons, sigils and runes. Then crafted my accessories as time went along.
Best bet is start in all the low level 1-15 areas first then move up a tier so you don’t die needlessly when an enemy you just killed respawns behind you. Craft as you go along if you can as for every 5 or 10 levels that equipment is the strongest you can get for your level.
