How to make my first staff? (Mesmer)
At the lower levels I always just buy a white coloured staff from a weapons merchant. All towns have them. Make sure you buy one that is off your level.
My advise for a new player is to buy all possible weapons for your profession (for the one handed weapons that say either hand get two) and use them to unlock your skills for all weapons. This is not only convinient for later to have it out of the way, but it also helps you understand the different weapons and their potential.
Later on you get them from drops and story-line completion. wich are better then the crafted ones. So keep switching them out when you go.
From level 40 upwards it gets interesting to craft your own weapon or to buy them from the tradepost.
One source I’m forgetting is karma-merchants. When you complete a yellow renown heart the guy with the symbol above the head becomes a merchant who also sells weapons and armor for karma. so it is worth checking them too whenever you complete a heart.
Ow and I hate the term Noob and prefer the term Newbe. Newbe is what you are. Someone who is new and has a lot too learn. A noob is someone who has been around long enough to have learned but didn’t and prolly never will learn. Thats a huge difference in my opinion
-edit- Just to add all mesmer weapons
Greatsword
Staff
Scepter (you have one from the start)
Sword (get two)
Focus
pistol
torch
spear
trident (you have one form the start)

Hi and welcome! You can:
- buy weapons from vendors. There is a at least one weapon vendor (identifiable by a tiny icon in the map) in each one of the capital cities. Which race are you? In any case, you started out right next to one of those cities. However:
- you will find many, many weapons when you kill enemies. Some of them will be types that you can’t use on a mesmer (like long bow) and some of them will be too high or too low a level, but believe me, they will drop. As a mesmer, you have quite the range of weapons you can try: Sword, Greatsword, Pistol, Staff, Scepter, Focus (I think) plus underwater weapons such as trident and harpoon; some work both for main hand and off-hand. It’ll take you a while to find them all and try out all the skills.
- you can indeed craft weapons. You would have to go to a crafting center (the cities have them, there are also some spread out across the other maps) and talk to the NPC next to the respective crafting station. To craft magical weapons (staff, scepter, focus) level “Artificer”. Swords: “Weaponsmith”. Pistols: “Huntsman”. You can learn/level 2 crafts at a time.

Wow, thank you for the extremely fast response!! :O
I’ll definitely go check out the shops in town. Is there a certain type of shop owner that sells them?
(Like a blacksmith, or something like that?)
Yes, they’re called Weaponsmith.

Well, you can make a level 5 version of a Mighty Crude Staff pretty easily. The whole craft vs not crafting is really one of passion vs money. It’s expensive, but if you like to play MMOs like I do by picking a few crafts that go with your character and ‘living off the land’, so to speak, as you go, it’s a lot of fun, and you can make your own exotics. But…it’s expensive.
There’s some pretty cheap ones on the Black Lion Trading Company too. Hit ‘O’ and click on the balance and search on ‘Mighty Crude Staff’. There’s a 5 for 78c, a 10 for 2.24 and a 15 for 3.79. If you go the buy route, I’d just get the cheaper blues and skip the greens as you go. You’ll level fast enough, and sometimes you’ll get drops and the possibility to buy them from karma vendors from time to time (though I usually spent karma points on things like accessories and rings and things as I originally leveled up…but mostly because I couldn’t make those, but could make my own armor and weapons).
I’d be happy to just make you one and send it to you too.

They have a sword over their head and marked on the map.

I agree that at a low level it is easier to buy one from a vender or TP if you have a little extra coin and want a blue with a few more stats. They generally are not much more and sometimes even lower than a white depending on the stats.
Often low level mobs can still drop weapons but with my luck I usually get ones I can’t use for my profession.
Crafting mats are harder to come by depending on where you are and by the time you have gotten enough to make a staff you might have already gotten a drop or the coin to buy one from a vendor or TP.
Hope this helps.

This is good advice, especially for a new player. You will be recommended certain weapons to use from other players no doubt, and some are easier/better at certain types of play but trying them all out will help you learn the classes abilities.

I suggest you buy your items off the trading post. You get a much better item.
Press ‘O’ and a menu will open up.
Select the tab that looks like scales.
Click "show filters’
For category select “weapon”
For subcategory select “staff”
For level range select 5 6 (always include a level that’s a multiple of 5 and below your current level, weapons are crafted for each 5 levels, so there’s more inventory"_
Click search and you’ll see a Mighty Crude Staff for about 77 copper. You can buy one immediately for that price, (You pick it up from the black lion trader, which looks like the scales symbol on your map).
Alternatively, you can place a buy order (select place a custom offer) You can place an order for 1 copper more than the highest order and it should be filled in a while. Right now the highest buy order for a staff is 31 copper, so if you place an order for 32 copper you’ll be at the front of the line.
I usually place a buy order for all the weapons I want ahead of time. For example, a level 6 I’ll place an order for my weapons at level 10. That way everything is ready when I get there.
DO NOT just buy one of every weapon and use them until you unlock all the skills.
instead, I recommend sticking with 1 weapon for like 5 levels until you get a feel for it (this is probably 10x longer than just using it long enough to unlock the skills), then switch to a new one. after going through all of them, you’ll have a favorite you’ll go back to, or at least 2 to narrow it down between.
also note: around level 10, I think, you can equip 2 sets of weapons and switch between them with the ~ key.

Heh I can see my previous post being misunderstood. I agree try them all until you learn them not until they are simply maxed.

I actually prefer to unlock all the skills, even underwater, as fast as possible. Then I settle down to figuring out what they do and how they synergize, armed with the recent memory of what it felt like to use each skill during unlocking. Of course at this point I’ve got one of each profession, 4 of them at 80, and a couple of lower alts. So I’m simply plugging in to already achieved game skills.
But once unlocked, I do take my time using each possible combination until I find the one that feels most fun and effective. I was mid 30’s on my Guardian before I settled on scepter/focus for her main set. I probably should revisit swords on my Thief; I just hated the shadow return because I kept ending up too far from my enemy to hit it. Now that I understand the game better and have trained my hotkey muscles further I might do better with a sword!
Anyway, I like having all my options, so I grind out all the skills early and pay attention to what they are doing as I do so.
-Sigh- I have a new necromancer (just HAD to have a sylvari in cultural cloth) and I’m trying so hard not to use the same weapons on her as on my 80 necro but since I settled on the most fun ones already it’s quite difficult to change it up.

I disagree with you, This might be a good plan for rolling an alt class you have never played. But imagine being totally new. I remember it and I was totally newbe and puzzling out how to stay alive and how to keep myself going. That puzzle is part of the learning curve. you need to find the weapon you prefer on your own. the bets way is to be able to try them all as soon as possible. ok it takes an hour to kill wurms in queensdale to unlock them all (or whatever low level area you can find) but then you got it out of the way and you can experiment and switch whenever you want.
I wish I could turn back time and experience this game again as a total newbe. I miss the frustration of trying to find my way and the joy of finding it.

I agree with mercury ranique. It makes little sense to “stick it out” with double swords on your first mesmer, only to find out 10 levels later that ranged fighting is more your thing and suddenly you don’t die all the time.

I found the sword to be very difficult to use as a starting weapon. I did much better with greatsword and staff while leveling. I use sword now at level 80 but I don’t think its a good weapon for a person who is still learning combat in this game.

that’s the point – you wouldn’t know how much you liked ranged until you had such a hard time at melee.
I remember when I first started, I maxed all the weapon skills asap. had them all by level 10 or so. around level 50 I was clueless which weapons I liked, so I had to go back and re-test all of them.
