Just bought game, need help choosing class
Welcome.
I tried Ranger, and I loved it, except pet AI was bad. But I LOVE animals and the wilderness. At release it was the worst class. Sadly it seems a lot of people play this class. And the pet AI is still bad supposedly.
Why do you say “sadly”?
It doesn’t exist a class that no one plays, so just pick the one you think you will enjoy the most. The only one with a pet mechanic is Ranger, so go for it!
okay, thanks its just in other games, when class is most popular or really popular, its a lot harder to compete and find groups. Like in WoW, I liked hunter, but because I’m not that great at a hunter in that game …it was too hard to compete with other hunters that played better (I was pretty bad) and I couldn’t find a group at all. No one wanted to recruit me for raids. I switched to a shaman, still sucked (and was worse), but far easier to find a group and groups wanted me in.
So when I play a class not too popular, its a lot easier to group. I don’t compete with others that are better at games than I am. WoW shaman is a good example like I said, I sucked so bad at it, but far easier to get groups than when I was a hunter.
Maybe I try ranger anyway, but if its really popular, I might not find groups cause I really bad at games. Don’t play call of duty with me lol, I really try and I get 6 kills if I’m really lucky and end up with 40+ deaths on an average game.
In GW2 it’s not like that.
Depending on the type of content you are playing, each profession will have a few optimal builds, which means that each profession is viable and should be welcome in any group.
Even if you decide to use a bad build you will find people willing to play with you.
Also, you don’t really need groups for most of the content.
In the open world you can do everything on your own, and that’s what most people do unless they are playing with friends. In open world PvE people form parties because they have a common goal, not because a certain profession is needed.
In PvP the game finds a suitable group for you, although you can also decide to create your own party.
In WvW you can follow the commander without joining a party, but if I were you I’d join your server community to find out what they are up to. When you decide to try out WvW, ask in the WvW section for advice and ask if there is a community website dedicated to your server.
In any case, I can’t imagine people not wanting you in their party because of your profession. If someone does give you crap about you playing Ranger, know that they are probably greener than you ;-)
Elementalist is boring too popular and not very unique
If having 80+ weapons skills alone is not ‘unique’, i don’t know what is. It ranks as one of the hardest class to play due to the sheer number of skills you have to handle.
Ranger is a pretty decent class to play, though personally it’s somewhat boring. You stand at one spot and shoot arrows while your pet tanks, to a lesser degree when using and axe or sword.
But what exactly is ‘fun’ to you?
For some it’s to shrug off heavy damage, for some it’s seeing big damage numbers, and for others it could be the sense of accomplishment of mastering a hard-to-play class.
Every single class has something different to offer, so try out other classes as well.. =)
where bashing people over the head with a stick deals more damage than a stab to the heart.

I ended up making a Necromancer, and going to go minion master. I do always like Necromancers in games, and while not as cool as minion master in GW1…I think it fits me most. But I just like having pets that are good.

But I just like pets. Ranger pets are awesome cause they are animals. But I went with necromancer cause they get a ton of pet variety and seem like they have a more versatile playstyle. I like bows a lot, but it seems I’d need to use melee as a ranger and that doesn’t really interest me too much. Didn’t know necromancer pets were broken though lol.
Im sorry, the elementalist is too boring?
I’ll have you know its one of the hardest and most challenging classes in this game with each weapon offering 20 skills each to learn and master with a range of combo’s, buffed by traits and other items to create new and exciting ways to play.
If you think the elementalist is boring then I would say level up your character and leave the starting area’s.
PS. I’m messing around, im not having a go or anything but seriously leave the starting zone and you’ll see how good the ele is.
Well, I think I’d like elementalists more if they had elemental pets. If they had those, I’d have a lot more fun. I mean, as a class itself, its definitely the most involved. I just don’t have too much fun with non-pet classes.
But, maybe I should try them too as an alt since I don’t like ranger that much like I thought I would. I have played necromancer, and that is fun. But elementalist as an alt character may work…seems a lot of people recommend them.
Would you recommend staff on an elementalist? Or what is usually the typical weapons? I saw some use dagger/dagger, but dunno how suitable that is for grouping.
You can get elemental pets…..only the are skills and don’t last long lol
Most people use Dagger/dagger I used to use dagger/sceptre but changed to D/D as well.
I would suggest having a Staff, Sceptre, focus and 2 daggers on you so you can switch it up if you get bored. All my characters have all available weapons at hand just incase.

Oh, you are right. They do, except they look to be on cooldown (120s up, 180s down…is that still correct?) more than they are up and I get a feeling they are more useless than ranger pets lol (my ranger pet died super fast, was really lame).
All about the necros. Idk why you say they’re broken. They’re cool and I like that there’s always a second ability adding utility to your pets.
If you like Minion Master, go for it! The build is perfectly fine, except in dungeons. Bosses tend to one shot the minions and they won’t move out of red circles either. But you can easily swap traits and skills for that.
Actually, every class is best in melee. So don’t ignore Ranger just because you’d need to play them melee. And the melee thing is mostly only for dungeons anyway, so again you just keep a sword in your bag for those situations and you’re fine.
Edit: Oh and yes, Elementalist elementals are only out for x seconds (was it 60? 120? I forgot) before they auto-die. On the other hand you get to pick between 4 different types: water, earth, fire and air, which is pretty cool.

There ya go, I fixed it for you. :-p
I’m just joking, couldn’t resist, sorry :-)
Op, now that you have picked a class, just keep playing and having fun, don’t get stressed over it!
