Hi guise, new to the forum/game here.
So today I tried to level my Mesmer, and it took me almost 2 hours to get to level 4.
Is there something I’m doing wrong here? I did the main quest, but now I can’t complete it because I have to fight something like 6 levels higher than me, and it’s impossible for me to kill.
Any tips or routines on how to level in this game would be nice.
Thanks!

mesmer goes very slow in the start yes. that was my experience as well. i think from lvl 20 it is a good idea to lvl in wvw or eotm. easy xp and fast caps. and mesmer can be deadly in 1vs1.
took down a lvl80 warrior on lvl44, and today als lvl 55 i took down 2 lvl80 rangers :p
can’t wait to see its power at 80 hang on with that mesmer, it will pay off :p

Thanks for the quick reply Fau.
It just feels extremely slow to level, not only as Mesmer, but on my Thief too, they both stuck at a point that I can’t progress through the main story anymore.
I mean this game’s level cap is 80 (I believe), and it takes hours to get level 5? Neverwinter, for example, within the hour I can get to level 10+ and that’s on a 60 cap.
There has to be something I’ve done wrong, or something I’ve missed.

mesmer and thief are both very slow. My ranger felt way faster but once you go to eotm it goes pretty fast imo. In eotm, you go lvl, work on ach for tourney + good loot :p combi-package and in pve is fastest hearts and exploring i think.
and the personal story

Dynamic events, heart “quests,” and the personal story are your main sources of EXP. Wander around, explore everything, and do every event you can. I recommend fully exploring your race’s starter city and maybe Lion’s Arch and the other cities ASAP to get some easy EXP without having to engage in combat. After that, just do every heart, DE, and personal story chapter you’re at the right level for. When you exhaust your race’s starter zone (1-15), try the other races’ starter zones too…it’s easy, and you’ll learn more about the other races’ cultures. But leveling in this game IS slow compared to some others, since most of the sources of experience you’ll find scale to your character’s level. Going from level 3 to 4 is about as easy/difficult as going from 78 to 79.

Speak with scouts, they show the nearby heart events which you can complete and try to keep up with your personal story. It gives a nice amount of XP.
Also check this topic out a few post below yours.

The game also has a very linear leveling progression unlike games where the first 10 levels are very quick and then leveling slows down. Here it’s around one hour of playtime equals 1 level all the way to level 80.

You also ran into the assumption that there is a single quest chain through the personal story. That is NOT the primary way to play the game. It’s more of a filler chain that is entirely optional that you can complete at any time. This game will not lead you around from quest giver to quest giver. Scouts, the telescopes on your map, will tell you what quests are in the immediate area and it’s up to you to visit them.

As the previous posters pointed out the primary way to play is exploration which leads to discovery of events and heart quests. Just about every activity you do while exploring gives you XP from gathering mats (no need to race to them, everyone gets a copy) to rez down NPCs and players. Then there’s visiting points of interest, vistas, completing skill point challanges. Even wandering into an area you hadn’t visited before grants you XP.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

Crafting is probably the fastest way to level.
100% a zone or do the dailies to get XP bonuses and rewards. Then use the XP and crafting boosters that you got as rewards. Buy or make food to get XP boosts.

May have something to do with your build. Thieves are pretty much the fastest levelling classes in the game, what with a 25% movespeed utility, stealth for breaking aggro from pointless fights, insane burst damage from Pistol Whip, and 3 sources of shadowstep you can use on white mobs for faster travel.
