I highly recommend all New players to read this (Guide) to learn how the
Combat mechanics function and how the Traits/Armor/Weapons system work.

Also take a look at this short video to get an idea of how all 8 classes play in Combat:
This should asnwer all your questions! =) Have fun! Oh and also please Comment on my guide and leave me feedback on your thoughts.

Thieves are great. Good for PvE but with slow start. Fantastic for PvP.
Mesmers are tougher to level in PvE with a long ramp up, but good @ 80. Less of an issue for you if leveling with a friend. They’re tops in PvP. More complex combat style.
Necros are one of the classes that get no love right now. Minions are so-so, but other builds are more viable. Good mobility and condition control.

I feel like leaning back towards theif, really fits to my play style and I’ve played several games with active combat so I know how to avoid “the shiz”
I absolutely hated my thief for the longest time, as I was squishy and couldn’t really figure the class out. After facerolling on my D/D ele for too long, I went back to thief and I’m loving it.
The thief definitely has some decent concepts to it about when to strike, when to back off, when to reset, etc. Mostly people are hating on thieves because of the culling issues (if invisibility only lasts 3 secs, it will take the enemy 4-5 seconds to see you), and the fact that there were several burst builds were ridiculously OP (they have changed this a little, will see how it balances in the long run).
I also really like mesmer. It feels a bit messy in PvE. It has a hard time tagging mobs reliably when farming at orr events or other areas where you need lots of AOE. It is lacking AOE and needs targets for most skills, unlike the ele where you can either use the skills with nothing targeted or place it on the ground. If you try to WvW or sPvP with a mesmer, just remember to act like the clones, don’t go around dodging and strafing. Either stay still or run forward/backward.
Made it to 12 Last night, enjoying the theif so far, finding out what weapon combo I enjoy (really enjoying d/d or s/p for the cleave). That being said was having some issue as I hadnt bought any weapon upgrades (couldnt figure out which vendor, since found a spreadsheet), I ended up buying some on the AH cheap (was a good experience). I have 7k karma so really no excuse tonight to not run around and upgrade my gear. I also am going to plug the new tips and tricks, once I read that and then applied it to my game play, really helped to improve/enhance things. Some of the story quests are abit of a pita though as you dont get help and force you to be same lvl.
Thanks for the help everyone.
